Studies investigating the mechanical stability of lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic that do not require sintering after milling compared with other computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials are lacking.The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the flexural strength of CAD-CAM zirconia, lithium disilicate, and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramics with and without fatigue conditions.Specimens (N=90, n=15) (12×4×3 mm) from the following CAD-CAM materials were prepared and polished: lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD); lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic (N!ce); and zirconium dioxide ceramic (IPS e.max ZirCAD). All specimens were divided into 2 subgroups: immediate testing without aging and simulation of aging by using a mastication simulator for 1 200 000 cycles (5 °C-55 °C). Thereafter, flexural strength testing was performed by using a universal testing machine (1 mm/min) on nonaged and aged specimens. The data were evaluated by using nonparametric 2-way ANOVA and Wilcoxon rank post hoc tests (α=.05).Both the material type and aging significantly affected the results (P.001). The interaction was not significant (P.05). Under nonaged conditions, zirconium dioxide ceramic (1136 ±162 MPa) showed significantly higher mean ±standard deviation flexural strength (P.001) than lithium disilicate (304 ±34 MPa) and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic (202 ±17 MPa). The glass-ceramic groups were also significantly different from each other (P.001). After aging, zirconium dioxide (1087.9 ±185.3 MPa) also presented significantly higher mean ±standard deviation flexural strength (P.001) than lithium disilicate (259 ±62 MPa) and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic (172 ±11 MPa) (P.001). Aging significantly decreased the flexural strength of lithium disilicate (14.6%) (P=.03) and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic (14.5%) (P=.01) but had minimal effect on the zirconium dioxide ceramic (4.3%) (P=.29).Among the tested CAD-CAM materials, the mechanical performance of lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic was comparable with that of lithium disilicate and considerably lower than that of zirconia. Aging decreased the flexural strength of both lithium disilicate and lithium disilicate-strengthened aluminosilicate glass-ceramic.

Constructing lightweight and porous adsorbents which can effectively remove dye contaminants is of great significance in the field of the sewage treatment. In this work, anisotropic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) composite sponges assisted by rectorites are fabricated through directional freeze-drying. The resulted composite sponge exhibits the superior saturated adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of 120.0 mg/g and 96.1% for methylene blue (MB), respectively, which is better than the pure CNF sponge and rectorite powders. This is attributed to the strong electrostatic interaction between CNFs and MB, and good cation exchange property of rectorites inside the three-dimensional (3D) highly porous composite sponge. The MB adsorption process of the composite sponge fits to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model well, which is affected by both boundary layer and intraparticle diffusion, resulting in a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 214.6 mg/g. Moreover, it also possesses a selective adsorption capacity for anionic and cationic dyes, which is expected to realize the separation treatment of different dyes according to actual application requirements.

SUMMARY Objectives To evaluate color changes in milled feldspathic porcelain laminate veneers following hydrofluoric acid etching (HFA), sandblasting (SB), or Er:YAG laser irradiation (LI). Methods and Materials Disc-shaped specimens (thickness=1 mm, diameter=8 mm) were milled from feldspathic porcelain blocks (n=40). Glazed specimens were randomly assigned to four subgroups (n=10 each) according to surface treatment: negative control, HFA, SB, and LI. A layer of translucent, light-cured resin cement (thickness=0.1 mm) was then applied following silanization. The color was characterized by the L*, a*, and b* uniform color space (CIE) using a reflection spectrophotometer. CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) was calculated to determine the color difference between each surface treatment and negative control groups. Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc tests. Results There were no significant differences in CIEL* and CIEb* coordinates between negative control and all surface treatment groups (p≥0.108). The SB group demonstrated significantly lower mean CIEa* (higher greenish hue) compared to other groups (p≤0.003). HFA exhibited significantly higher CIEa* (closer to red) when compared to LI (p=0.039). LI induced the smallest overall color change compared to negative control (ΔE00=1.43 [1.07]). However, the differences in ΔE00 values were not statistically significant (p=0.648). Conclusions The tested surface treatments did not affect the lightness or the yellowness of the 1-mm-thick milled feldspathic porcelain veneers. However, sandblasting resulted in a significant increase in the greenish hue. The Er:YAG laser resulted in the closest ΔE00 (1.43) to the 50:50% perceptibility threshold (ΔE00=1.2).

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using expanded vermiculite and its impact on the production of concrete roof tiles. The control treatment and replacement of 12.5, 25, 37.5, and 50% sand by vermiculite were evaluated. The concrete roof tiles were moulded by the simultaneous pressing and extrusion mechanical process. The control trace was comprised by 21.95% CPV-ARI cement, 65.85% sand, and 12.20% limestone. After production, the concrete roof tiles were cured for 28 days. The physical (roof tiles classification, samples dry weight, water absorption, and porosity), mechanical (splitting tensile strength), and microstructural properties were evaluated. All treatments were assessed before and after accelerated ageing. The thermal properties of the modification in the concrete roof tiles' composition were also analysed. The evaluated amounts of vermiculite significantly affected the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of concrete roof tiles. The use of vermiculite in concrete roof tiles reduced their dry weight and thermal conductivity, not impairing their durability. The use of 31.0% vermiculite in concrete roof tiles was suggested for better thermal insulation optimization (20.29% reduction) and weight reduction (7.92% and 7.94% at 28 days of curing and after accelerated ageing, respectively), along with adequate physical, mechanical, and durability properties.

The molecular surface properties of zwitterionic polymer coatings are central to their ultra-low fouling properties and effectiveness as steric stabilizers in concentrated salt solutions. Here, Surface Force Apparatus measurements quantified the molecular forces between end-grafted poly(sulfobetaine) methacrylate thin films and mica, as a function of the chain grafting density and ionic strength. These results demonstrate that, at the ionic strengths considered, end-grafted poly(sulfobetaine) films can be described by models for polymers in good solvent. Parameters determined from data fits to the Milner-Witten-Cates or Dolan and Edwards models for dense or dilute chains, respectively, varied with ionic strength, in ways that reflect poly(sulfobetaine) swelling and the increased excluded volume strength of chain segments. These force measurements provide new insight into how polymer coverage and salt cooperate to regulate repulsive poly(sulfobetaine) steric barriers. These findings have implications for the design of grafted poly(sulfobetaine) as colloidal stabilizers or nonfouling surface coatings.

Introduction. Perianal abscess is defined as a local collection of pus in the perianal tissues. It is among the most common anorectal problems encountered by surgeons. Further extension of this infection into the unilateral or bilateral ischiorectal fossa leads to a horseshoe abscess. Morbid obesity is a risk factor for horseshoe perianal abscess with the potential to disrupt the normal healing process. Case Report. A 35-year-old male with morbid obesity presented to the surgery outpatient clinic in a hospital in Subang, West Java, Indonesia, with continuous severe pain and swelling around the anus of approximately 7 days’ duration. Local examination of the anogenital area revealed a horseshoe perianal abscess extending to the ischiorectal fossa, approximately 1 cm from the anal verge and measuring 7.5 cm × 4.5 cm × 10 cm. Physical examination findings included tenderness to palpation; the presence of blood, pus, and necrotic tissue; and fluctuance. Incision and drainage were performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. In lieu of colostomy, the patient chose wound healing by secondary intention. Postoperative open wound care consisted of wet-to-moist gauze dressings during the first 2 postoperative days, followed by hydrocolloid dressing after the pus and blood were adequately drained, and finally, alginate dressing after granulation tissue formed. Aluminum silicate (microporous ceramic) was used as the external (secondary) wound dressing. Time to healing was 8 weeks. Conclusion. Horseshoe abscesses are challenging to manage. Thorough and careful diagnosis, prompt fluid resuscitation to overcome fluid and electrolyte imbalance and to ensure proper antibiotic administration, nutrition intake, and a planned surgical approach as well as individualized postoperative care are necessary to achieve healing.

BACKGROUND Fresh mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) are highly perishable and easily lose quality during storage. The packaging system can retard the deterioration of fresh mushrooms. However, water vapor transmission rates of commodity plastic films are lower than the transpiration rate of mushrooms, resulting in increased moisture condensation in the package and perishability of mushrooms due to microbial growth. A possible solution for controlling the humidity level in the package is to use a hygroscopic material. Acid leaching can improve the chemical and physical properties of expanded vermiculite (EV). The aim of this study was to develop a novel hygroscopic agent from acidified expanded vermiculite (AEV) and calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) that has a high moisture absorption capacity and maintains a powdered form in the packaging system for fresh mushrooms. RESULTS Our findings revealed that leaching EV with hydrochloric acid increased porosity and hydrophilicity. The combination of AEV:CaCl2 at 6:4 (w/w, AEV/CS40) showed the highest moisture adsorption capacity at 1.724 ± 0.03 g water per gram of material. Then, 1.55 g of AEV/CS40 was applied to the mushroom packaging and stored at 4 °C. The results indicated that AEV/CS40 could delay mushroom deterioration in terms of color change, firmness, pH, total soluble solids, and microbial growth. CONCLUSION The study findings indicate that the alternative solid hygroscopic material obtained by combining AEV with CaCl2 has potential for use as a hygroscopic material for preserving the quality of white button mushrooms. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Transforming potential waste materials into high-value-added sustainable materials with advanced properties is one of the key targets of the emerging green circular economy. Natural mica (muscovite) is abundant in the mining industry, which is commonly regarded as a byproduct and gangue mineral flowing to waste rock and mine tailings. Similarly, chitin is the second-most abundant biomass resource on Earth after cellulose, extracted as a byproduct from the exoskeleton of crustaceans, fungal mycelia, and mushroom wastes. In this study, exfoliated mica nanosheets were individualized using a mechanochemical process and incorporated into regenerated chitin matrix through an alkali dissolution system (KOH/urea) to result in a multifunctional, hybrid hydrogel, and film design. The hydrogels displayed a hierarchical and open nanoporous structure comprising an enhanced, load-bearing double-cross-linked polymeric chitin network strengthened by mica nanosheets possessing high stiffness after high-temperature curing, while the hybrid films (HFs) exhibited favorable UV-shielding properties, optical transparency, and dielectric properties. These hybrid designs derived from industrial residues pave the way toward sustainable applications for many future purposes, such as wearable devices and tissue engineering/drug delivery.

Phosphatic clays, one type of phosphorite industry wastes, could induce environmental issues and geological disasters when they are piled in the open air. Previous research demonstrated that phosphatic clays usually exhibit poor performance in heavy metal immobilization mostly due to low phosphate content. Thus, phosphatic clays could not be applied in practical heavy metal remediation without pretreatment. If the adsorption performance of phosphatic clays could be improved, employing phosphatic clays for heavy metal immobilization may act as an eco-friendly, economic way to not only reutilize phosphorite industry wastes but also remedy environmental heavy metal pollution at the same time. In this study, we propose an argon plasma treatment approach to remarkably improve the effectiveness of phosphatic clay performances in heavy metal immobilization. The optimal Pb(II) sorption capacity of 66.7 mg g-1 can be obtained at pH 6 and 25°C by using 15-min argon plasma treated phosphatic clays, which is two times as large as those of the untreated phosphatic clays and almost reaches those of raw apatite minerals. Moreover, the Pb(II) desorption ratios of Pb(II)-adsorbed phosphatic clays are also reduced by 30%-60% at different pH conditions. Therefore, applying argon-plasma technique to transform waste phosphatic clays into efficient heavy-metal sorbents is a promising road to phosphorite waste reclamation and environmental remediation.

Reduced nontronite has been demonstrated to be antibacterial through the production of hydroxyl radical (•OH) from the oxidation of structural Fe(II). Herein, we investigated the antibacterial activity of more common smectite-illite (S-I) clays toward Escherichia coli cells, including montmorillonite SWy-3, illite IMt-2, 50-50 S-I rectorite RAr-1, 30-70 S-I ISCz-1, and nontronite NAu-2. Under an oxic condition, reduced clays (with a prefix r before mineral names) produced reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the antibacterial activity followed the order of rRAr-1 > rSWy-3 ≥ rNAu-2 ≫ rIMt-2 ≥ rISCz-1. The strongest antibacterial activity of rRAr-1 was contributed by a combination of •OH and Fe(IV) generated from structural Fe(II)/adsorbed Fe2+ and soluble Fe2+, respectively. Higher levels of lipid and protein oxidation, intracellular ROS accumulation, and membrane disruption were consistent with this antibacterial mechanism of rRAr-1. The antibacterial activity of other S-I clays depended on layer expandability, which determined the reactivity of structural Fe(II) and the production of •OH, with the expandable smectite being the most antibacterial and nonexpandable illite the least. Our results provide new insights into the antibacterial mechanisms of clay minerals.

The combined approach of specific surface area (SSA), porosity, microprobe analysis (EMPA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with EDX and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provided the mica mineral physico-chemical and morphological characterisation. The electrostatic surface properties were assessed through the determination of the Point of Zero Charge (pHPZC) by the drift method and the electrokinetic mica mineral features represented by the Isoelectric Point (pHIEP) which was carried out through zeta potential measurements. Adsorption tests were performed to correlate the surface charge behaviour of the mica mineral and its influence on the adsorption efficiency of two different dyes, namely: Safranin Orange (SO), as a cationic dye and Reactive Black 5 (RB5), as an anionic dye. The higher adsorption capacity SO dye was observed at pH 9 and achieved almost 83% of removal, while RB5 dye adsorption on mica surface had the highest result, about 45% of removal efficiency, on pH of 3. In both cases, the main mechanism identified that drove this results is the electrostatic force of attraction between the adsorbent edge surface charge (pHdependent) and the ionic nature (anionic or cationic) of the pollutant dyes particles. The preliminary adsorption experiments demonstrated that the raw grounded mica mineral has a greater potential associated with its application on cationic dye removal in wastewater. Litter sanitation treatments and feed supplements that stimulate bird growth. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of zeolite (z) and halloysite (h) in feed and rye straw litter on growth performance, meat quality in chickens. 500 males Ross 308 were allocated to 5 groups (10 replicates). Feed for groups 2–5 was supplemented with halloysite and zeolite (25:75). The content of aluminosilicates in the feed was different depending on the feeding phase: 0.5, 1, 1.5, or 2%. The following doses were used in litter: 2, 0.800 kg/m2 h; 3, 0.400 kg/m2 h and 0.400 kg/m2 z; 4, 0.800 kg/m2 z; 5, 0.200 kg/m2 h, and 0.600 kg/m2 z. Growth, and meat quality were analysed. The behavior and mechanism of Li leaching from lithium aluminum silicate glass-ceramics which can be used as a secondary source of Li using aqueous NaOH solution was investigated. The Li leaching efficiency is increased with increasing concentration of NaOH, specific surface area, and reaction temperature. When leached under optimum conditions, 2 mol/L NaOH, 53 μm particle undersize, 1:10 solid/liquid ratio, 250 r/min stirring speed, 100°C reaction temperature, 12 hr, the Li leaching efficiency was approximately 70%. However, when the leaching experiment was performed for 48 hr, the concentration of Li+ ions contained in the leach liquor decreased from 1160 to 236 mg/L. To investigate the origin of this phenomenon, the obtained leach residue was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. These analyses show that zeolite was formed around the lithium aluminum silicate glass-ceramics, which affected the leaching of by adsorbing Li+ ions. In addition, using the shrinking-core model and the Arrhenius equation, the leaching reaction with NaOH was found to depends on the chemical reaction of the two reactants, with a higher than 41.84 kJ/mol of the activation energy.

Background: In this work the cytotoxicity and gastric and gastrointestinal resistance of a high-load synthetic expandable mica, Na-mica-4, is studied for the first time. The hydrophilic character of this clay mineral can be modified by ion exchange reaction between Na+ inorganic cations housed in the interlayer space, and surfactant molecules, resulting in the formation of an organophilic material. This adsorption capability of organic compounds makes them very useful for a wide range of applications, such as their use as drug carriers. Previous studies have shown the high adsorption capacity of organofunctionalized Na-mica-4 of different types of drugs. Objetive: To carry out initial trials aimed at testing the cytotoxicity of a synthetic organofunctional expandable mica and evaluating its resistance to gastric and gastrointestinal digestion. Methods: A highly charged sodium mica (Na-mica-4) was synthesized and organofunctional by cationic exchange with an alkilamine, primary amine of 18 carbon atoms (C18-mica-4). Both were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field transmission electron microscopy, surface-specific analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermal gravimetric analysis. In addition, screening cytotoxicity trials were conducted on the human intestinal cell line Caco-2 with C18-mica-4 (0-125 µg/ml). Results: Only one of the endpoints evaluated (the reduction of tetrazolium MTS salt by dehydrogenase enzymes) showed a significant decrease in cellular viability after 48h at the highest concentration tested. C18-mica-4 shows structural resistance to both, gastric and gastrointestinal, digestion. Conclusion: A successful development of a functionalized mica has been made with a promising potential application as a carrier to the drug.

Lubricant performance can be improved using additives such as organic friction modifiers (OFMs) and is influenced by their conformation and properties in the space confined between the substrate surfaces, rendering the detailed property analysis of confined OFMs and lubricants a matter of high practical significance. Environmental problems associated with chemical catalysts to fulfil an ever-increasing energy demand have led to the search for an alternative environment friendly heterogeneous catalyst. If a catalyst being used in the biodiesel production is not environment friendly, then the environment is being contaminated in another way while trying to avoid pollution caused by burning of fossil fuels. The present study reports the use of nano-magnetic catalyst Fe/SnO supported on feldspar for the transesterification of various non-edible feedstocks oil, including Pongamiapinnata (karanja), Carthamusoxyacantha (wild safflower), Citrulluscolocynthis (bitter apple), Sinapisarvensis (wildmustard) and Ricinuscommunis (castor). The optimized transesterification parameter was oil to methanol ratio (1:5, 1:10, 1:15, 1:20 and 1:25), catalyst amount (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5%), temperature (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C), and reaction times (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min). The biodiesel yield was found to be more than 97% for all the tested feedstocks with a maximum biodiesel yield of 98.1 ± 0.6% obtained for bitter apple seed oil under optimum conditions (oil to methanol ratio of 1:10, catalyst amount of 1% at 50 °C for 120 min). The catalysts used for transesterification were magnetically extracted after completion of the reaction. Different physico-chemical parameters like pour point, density, cloud point, iodine value, acid value, saponification and cetane number were determined and the quality of all the biodiesel samples were found to be in the standard range (ASTM D6751 and EN 1404). Different techniques like XRD, FTIR, SEM and EDX were used to characterize the prepared nano-magnetic (Fe/SnO/Feldspar) catalyst.

Investigation of the structural properties and dynamics of fluid mixture confined in nanochannels has become an essential topic in many fields due to potential applications in nanofluidic devices and biological systems. Here, we study the ethanol-water blend confined between the mica and single or multilayer graphene for different slit pore widths, ethanol content, and temperatures. Our molecular dynamics simulation indicates that water molecules are adsorbed at the mica surface, while ethanol molecules prefer to be adsorbed near the graphene surface. We find that distinct layers of ethanol molecules form as the channel width and ethanol content in the mixture are increased. The diffusion of confined ethanol and water molecules depends on the nanopore widths, concentrations, and temperatures. Interestingly, at nanopore widths of 1.0 and 1.3 nm, the mobility of confined ethanol molecules is greater than that of water molecules for all ethanol concentrations. Engineered systems designed to remove CO2from the atmosphere need better adsorbents. Here, we report on zeolite-based adsorbents for the capture of low-concentration CO2. Synthetic zeolites with the mordenite (MOR)-type framework topology physisorb CO2from low concentrations with fast kinetics, low heat of adsorption, and high capacity. The MOR-type zeolites can have a CO2capacity of up to 1.15 and 1.05 mmol/g for adsorption from 400 ppm CO2at 30 °C, measured by volumetric and gravimetric methods, respectively. A structure–performance study demonstrates that Na+cations in the O33 site located in the side-pocket of the MOR-type framework, that is accessed through a ring of eight tetrahedral atoms (either Si4+or Al3+: eight-membered ring [8MR]), is the primary site for the CO2uptake at low concentrations. The presence of N2and O2shows negligible impact on CO2adsorption in MOR-type zeolites, and the capacity increases to ∼2.0 mmol/g at subambient temperatures. By using a series of zeolites with variable topologies, we found the size of the confining pore space to be important for the adsorption of trace CO2. The results obtained here show that the MOR-type zeolites have a number of desirable features for the capture of CO2at low concentrations.

The adhesive bonding technique together with tooth-colored ceramic material in fabricating veneers is considered one of the greatest achievements in modern prosthodontics. There is a wide range of indications for veneers, but they are most commonly used to establish adequate function and mask tooth discolorations and inappropriate tooth shape, size or position. A large variety of all-ceramic materials with excellent properties is available on the market today. It is challenging to select the material that will provide the best esthetics and function. The present article explains the principles of a modern, individual treatment approach for a young adult patient with multiple diastemata and shade disharmonies in the maxillary anterior teeth. The treatment plan was based on the selection of the appropriate ceramic material and technical procedures to achieve the best esthetic results using veneers. This included analyzing the specific case; defining the treatment goal; determining the precise shade; and selecting the most suitable and appropriate ceramic material, preparation design, fabrication technique, and adhesive concept. It was decided to use the new VITA zirconia-reinforced lithium disilicate press ceramic system and leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic veneering system to fabricate indirect ceramic veneers for all the maxillary anterior teeth. The size, shape, position, and shade of the natural teeth were changed and the diastemata were closed to achieve a more proportional dental relationship. The esthetic and functional goals were achieved and the patient was extremely satisfied with the final outcome.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the thickness of computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restorative materials on the bond strength of light-polymerized resin cement. Ninety specimens were prepared from three different CAD-CAM materials (a leucite-based glass-ceramic [Empress CAD], a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network [Vita Enamic], and a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic [Vita Suprinity]) in different thicknesses (1, 2, and 3 mm). One surface of each specimen was treated by using a single-step self-etching ceramic primer (Monobond Etch & Prime). Light-polymerized resin cement was bonded to treated surfaces by exposure to a light-emitting diode curing unit from the untreated side of the samples. Shear bond strength (SBS) between the ceramic and the resin cement was measured by using a universal testing machine. The leucite-based glass-ceramic had higher SBS values than the other materials at each thickness. For each material, 1 mm-thick specimens had the highest SBS values. The difference between the SBS values of 2 mm- and 3 mm-thick polymer-infiltrated ceramic network was nonsignificant, whereas the SBS values of 2 mm-thick leucite-based glass-ceramic and the zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic were significantly higher than those of the corresponding 3 mm-thick specimens. Turnover of soil organic carbon (SOC) is strongly affected by a balance between mineral protection and microbial degradation. However, the mechanisms controlling the heterogeneous and preferential adsorption of different types of SOC remain elusive. In this work, the heterogeneous adsorption of humic substances (HSs) and microbial carbon (MC) on a clay mineral (nontronite NAu-2) during microbial-mediated Fe redox cycling was determined using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The results revealed that HSs pre-adsorbed on NAu-2 would partially inhibit structural modification of NAu-2 by microbial Fe(III) reduction, thus retarding the subsequent adsorption of MC. In contrast, NAu-2 without precoated HSs adsorbed a significant amount of MC from microbial polysaccharides as a result of Fe(III) reduction. This was attributed to the deposition of a thin Al-rich layer on the clay surface, which provided active sites for MC adsorption. This study provides direct and detailed molecular evidence for the first time to explain the preferential adsorption of MC over HSs on the surface of clay minerals in iron redox processes, which could be critical for the preservation of MC in soil. The results also indicate that ToF-SIMS is a unique tool for understanding complex organic-mineral-microbe interactions.

Drug-loaded halloysites were characterized by XRD, DTA, FTIR, SEM, and HPLC-UV-based assay procedures. Dissolution studies were also performed in dissolution media with pH 1.2, 4.5, and 6.8. Moreover, the optimized samples were evaluated under stress stability conditions for determining prospects for the development of oral dosage forms.Results: As confirmed with the results of XRD and DTA, the drugs were found to be converted into amorphous form after loading with halloysite (HNTs). The drugs were loaded in the range of ∼ 7– 9% for the four drugs, with agitation providing satisfactory and equivalent loading as compared to vacuum plus agitation based reported methods. FTIR results revealed either only weak electrostatic (verapamil HCl and flurbiprofen) or no interaction with the surface structure of the HNTs. The dissolution profiling depicted significantly retarded release of drugs with Fickian diffusion from a polydisperse system as a model that suits well for the development of oral dosage forms. HPLC-UV-based assay indicated that except furosemide (BCS class IV), the other three drugs are quite suitable for development for oral dosage forms.Conclusion: The four drugs investigated undergo phase transformation with HNTs. While agitation is an optimum method for loading drugs with various physicochemical attributes into HNTs; solvent system, loading ratios and pH play an important role in the loading efficiency respective to the drug properties. This article describes the protocol for determining the cause of failure for retrieved failed implant supported fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) in a clinical study of three-unit bridges. The results of loading of flexure bars of different veneer compositions at different stress rates were presented for two veneer materials (leucite reinforced and fluorapatite glass-ceramic veneers) and a Y-TZP core zirconia ceramic used in the clinical study. From these results, the strengths of the fast loading conditions were used to determine the fracture toughness of these materials. Fractal dimension measurements of the flexure bars and selected FDPs of the same materials demonstrated that the values were the same for both the bars and the FDPs. This allowed the use of fracture toughness values from the flexure bars to determine the strengths of the FDPs. The failure analysis of clinically obtained FDP replicates to determine the size of the fracture initiating cracks was then performed. Using the information from the flexure bars and the size of the fracture initiating cracks for the failed FDPs, the strengths of the FDPs were determined. The clinical failures were determined to be most likely the result of repeated crack growth due to initial overload and continuous use after initial cracking.

Bioreduction is an efficient approach to in-situ remediate Cr(VI)-contaminated soil, but further strengthening methods are still urgently needed. Herein, a novel immobilized biocomposite (B-HA-VE-SA) was successfully synthesized by embedding a efficient strain Bacillus sp. CRB-7 with humic acid (HA) combined vermiculite (VE) and sodium alginate (SA). The performance and enhancement mechanism of the immobilized biocomposite on remediating Cr(VI)-contaminated soil were also investigated by analyzing the whole-genome of CRB-7, Cr(VI) detoxification, soil microecological regulation, and subsequent crop growth response. Genomic annotation demonstrated that CRB-7 contains multiple genes contributed to Cr(VI) tolerance, Cr(VI) reduction and other metals resistance. Results showed that embedded CRB-7 biocomposites exhibited more effective reduction of Cr(VI) in soil compared with control and free CRB-7 treatment, especially B-HA-VE-SA achieved the highest Cr(VI) removal efficiency (96.18%) and the residual Cr proportion (49.04%) via multiple mechanisms including carrier effects, nutrient sustained-release, and electron-shuttle effect enhanced the bioremediation process. Furthermore, the synergies of CRB-7 and immobilizers (HA, VE and SA) significantly improved soil microecology (soil enzyme activities, microbial quantity and diversity), and engendered the evolution of microbial community composition and functional pathways. Consequently, pot experiments (Brassica napus L.) verified the plant-growth-promoting (12.00-18.00% and 43.82-69.00% higher in emergence rate and biomass) and Cr-accumulation-reducing effects (19.47-91.09% and 29.11-89.80% lower in root and aerial parts) of free and immobilized CRB-7. Taken together, these findings highlighted the superiority of B-HA-VE-SA in simultaneous remediation, microecological improvement and safe utilization of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil.

A super-low-temperature ozone decomposition is realized without energy consumption on a ternary oxide catalyst mullite YMn

Azomite is a hydrated calcium sodium aluminosilicat rich in rare earth elements. To investigate the dietary effects of Azomite on growth, intestine microbiota and morphology, immunohematological changes and disease resistance, seven diets with Azomite supplementation of 0 (the control), 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 g/kg (A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6), were prepared and fed to largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (7.96 ± 0.19) for 60 days. The results revealed that the weight gain (WG) increased first and then decreased with the increasing dietary Azomite, and the A2 group presented the highest WG and lowest feed conversion ratio among all the groups. The supplementation of 2.0 g/kg Azomite significantly increased the intestine protease activity, the crude protein of whole body and protein retention (P0.05), and high inclusion of Azomite (6.0 g/kg) significantly reduced the lipid retention (P0.05). The amounts of red blood cells in A5, A6 groups, white blood cells in A3, A5, A6 groups and lymphocyte in A2-A6 groups were all significantly higher than those in the control group (P0.05). In addition, serum superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in A5, A6 groups, and serum alkaline phosphatase and lysozyme activities in A2-A4 groups showed significantly higher values than the control group (P0.05). Intestinal microbiota analysis indicated that the Tenericutes abundance was increased, whereas Proteobacteria abundance was decreased in all Azomite supplemented groups. The villus height in A2-A4 groups, and the villus width in A2 group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P0.05). The cumulative mortality was reduced by the addition of 2.0-5.0 g/kg Azomite after challenging with A. hydrophila (P0.05). In conclusion, proper addition of Azomite in diets improved the growth, intestine morphology, immune response and disease resistance in largemouth bass, and the optimal inclusion was estimated to be 2.0-3.0 g/kg diet.

The aim of the study was to compare production results and quality of meat, as well as histological features of the jejunum in broiler chickens administered feed with 1% addition of zeolite or halloysite, with the addition of aluminosilicates to litter (4.50 kg/m2) throughout the rearing. In the experiment, 300 male broilers were used for 6 wk. They were divided into 3 groups, each of 10 repetitions (10 birds each). Group 1 was a control, halloysite was added to feed and litter in group 2, while zeolite was applied instead of halloysite in group 3. After rearing, 10 selected birds from each group were slaughtered. Selected production properties and degree of footpad dermatitis were examined, and histomorphometric examination of the jejunum was performed. The lowest yield and the highest proportion of neck with skin in the carcass were demonstrated in group 2 (P < 0.05). The lowest percentage of skin with subcutaneous fat was found in group 3 (P < 0.05). A decrease in lightness (L∗) and yellowness (b∗) was demonstrated in group 2, while redness (a∗) was the lowest in group 3 (P < 0.05). Group 2 was characterized by the lowest water-holding capacity in breast muscles, and in group 3, in leg muscles (P < 0.05). In group 3, the highest fat content and the lowest water content in the breast muscles (P < 0.05) were found. The leg muscles in groups 2 and 3 were characterized by the highest a∗, and in group 2, by b∗. The control group had the lowest protein and the highest fat content in leg muscles. In the intestine from group 2, a higher height (P < 0.05) and surface area (P < 0.01) of intestinal villi were found, in comparison to group 3. The width of intestinal villi was higher in groups 2 and 1 than in group 3 (P < 0.05), similarly the depth of intestinal crypts. The addition of zeolite could be proposed because of the obtained production results, while the halloysite had a positive effect on the histomorphometric features of the jejunum.

BACKGROUND: Removal of radioactive substances, such as cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr), has become an emerging issue after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. It has been reported that hydroxyapatite (HA) and aluminosilicate composite powders can be used to remove Cs and Sr. However, the film type of these materials for the removal of Cs and Sr has not been reported. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the possibility of using HA, aluminosilicate, and aluminosilicate/HA composites for the removal of Cs and Sr radioactive substances. METHODS: Aluminosilicate films and HA films were fabricated using a sputtering technique with diatomaceous earth and HA targets, respectively. The aluminosilicate film was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A comb-shaped HA/aluminosilicate composite film was prepared to take advantage of the adsorption properties of the HA and the aluminosilicate films. The Cs and Sr adsorption on these films were also evaluated. RESULTS: In the XRD patterns, the film sputtered from a diatomaceous earth target under 5.0 Pa of Ar pressure showed aluminosilicate peaks (Na1.82(Al2Si3O10) and Al2SiO5) after 8 h of vapor-phase hydrothermal treatment. The film showed higher adsorption of Cs than Sr in Cs and Sr solutions, while the HA film adsorbed far more Sr than Cs. A HA/aluminosilicate composite film was successfully fabricated, and the SEM images showed that the width of the HA region was 230–260 μm, and that of the aluminosilicate region was 170–200 μm. The HA/aluminosilicate composite film showed 84.8 ± 11.5% Cs adsorption and 28.3 ± 1.4% Sr adsorption in a mixed solution of Cs and Sr. CONCLUSION: This study shows the feasibility of using HA films, aluminosilicate films, and HA/aluminosilicate composite films for the removal of radioactive substances such as Cs and Sr.

Aluminum-containing adjuvants used in vaccine formulations suffer from low cellular immunity, severe aggregation, and accumulation in the brain. Conventional aluminosilicates widely used in the chemical industry focus mainly on acidic sites for catalytic applications, but they are rarely used as adjuvants. Reported here is an innovative "ligand-assisted steric hindrance" strategy to create a high density of six-coordinate VI Al-OH groups with basicity on dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles as new nanoadjuvants. Compared to four-coordinate IV Al-modified counterparts, VI Al-OH-rich aluminosilicate nanoadjuvants enhance cellular delivery of antigens and provoke stronger cellular immunity. Moreover, the aluminum accumulation in the brain is more reduced than that with a commercial adjuvant. These results show that coordination chemistry can be used to control the adjuvanticity, providing new understanding in the development of next-generation vaccine adjuvants.

In this study, we report for the first time a novel type of sorbent that can be used for mercury adsorption from the air-based off-gasses—vermiculite impregnated with alkali polysulfides and thiosulfates. In contrast to other sorbents, vermiculite exhibits superior thermal stability in air and low adsorption capacity for organic vapors. This allows for a more favorable design of the soil remediation unit—direct coupling of thermal desorber with catalytic oxidizer using air as a carrier gas. In the bench-scale test at 180 °C, the sulfur/vermiculite sorbent exhibited significantly higher efficiency for the adsorption of mercury vapor from the off-gasses than the commercial sulfur/activated carbon sorbent at its highest operating temperature (120 °C). The average mercury concentration in the adsorber off-gas decreased from 1.634 mg/m3 for the sulfur/activated carbon to 0.008 mg/m3 achieved with impregnated vermiculite. The total concentration of organic compounds in the soil after thermal desorption was below the detection limit of the employed analytical method.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is one of the most common mycotoxins produced by fungus in contaminated feed. ZEN has multiple toxicities, including reproductive toxicity of domestic animals, particularly pigs. However, studies on the effects of ZEN on ovary/oocytes have been primarily based on in vitro experiments, and there is still no evidence from porcine in vivo models due to multiple limitations. Moreover, no report has investigated the effect of hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS) as a supplement on pig oocyte quality. In the present study, we fed pigs a 1.0 mg/kg ZEN-contaminated diet for 10 days. The results showed that pigs fed ZEN presented reduced oocyte-cumulus cell interactions, an increase in the number of denuded oocytes in ovaries, a decrease in the number of oocytes in each ovary, and an increase in the oocyte death rate. Oocytes from ZEN-exposed pigs exhibited a delayed cell cycle and abnormal cytoskeletal dynamics during meiotic maturation, which could be due to oxidative stress-induced autophagy. Moreover, we also show that supplementing the ZEN-contaminated diet with modified HSCAS effectively protected porcine oocyte quality. Taken together, our study provides in vivo data demonstrating the protective effects of HSCAS against ZEN toxicity in porcine oocytes.

A halloysite aluminosilicate nanotube (HNT) is a known reservoir for the loading and sustained delivery of therapeutics. Here, we formulate injectable chlorhexidine (CHX)-loaded nanotube-modified GelMA hydrogel that is cytocompatible and biodegradable and provides sustained release of CHX for infection ablation while displaying good biocompatibility. The effects of HNTs and CHX on hydrogel degradability and mechanical properties, as well as on the kinetics of CHX release, and on the antimicrobial efficacy against oral pathogens were systematically assessed. Cytocompatibility in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth and inflammatory response in vivo using a subcutaneous rat model were determined. Our hydrogel system, that is, (CHX)-loaded nanotube-modified GelMA showed minimum localized inflammatory responses, supporting its ability for drug delivery applications. Moreover, we showed that the incorporation of CHX-loaded nanotubes reduces the mechanical properties, increases the swelling ratio, and diminishes the degradation rate of the hydrogels. Importantly, the presence of CHX-loaded nanotubes inhibits bacterial growth with minimal cell toxicity. Our findings provide a new strategy to modify GelMA hydrogel with chlorhexidine-loaded nanotubes for clinical use as an injectable drug delivery strategy for dental infection ablation. Natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with a hollow lumen have been widely applied in many fields, such as water purification, drug carriers, cosmetics, antibacterial, and scaffolds for tissue engineering. However, their in vivo toxicity is still largely unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate sub-chronic oral toxicity of HNTs in the small intestine of mice. The results demonstrated that oral HNTs at low dose (5 mg/kg) for 30 days promoted mouse growth with no obvious adverse effect on the small intestine. The promotive effect on mouse growth disappeared after cessation of oral administration of HNTs. Oral HNTs at high dose (50 mg/kg) for 30 days induced aluminum (Al) and silicon (Si) accumulation and oxidative stress in the small intestine, which caused significant increases in the levels of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and inflammatory response and iNOS-mediated damages in the organ. Oral HNTs-induced changes in the small intestine at high dose were not observed after a 30-day recovery period. These findings provided the first evidence that oral HNTs-induced sub-chronic toxicity in the small intestine was reversible. The results suggest that HNTs at low concentration in environments have no adverse effect on mice, while there are health risks to mice under severe contamination by HNTs.

A bonding material can be acceptable in orthodontics when Shear Bond Strength (SBS) is higher than 5.9Mpa. The aim of our study was to compare the bonding of a metal orthodontic bracket "in vitro" under different types of healthy enamel surface preparations and with two bonding products: the composite and the Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement (RMGIC).Premolars preserved in 1% thymol water were bonded on their vestibular and palatal/lingual surfaces with different techniques of bonding and surface preparation: Group 1: Etching+Bonding+Composite, Group 2: Etching+Fuji Ortho LC, Group 3: V-prep+Fuji Ortho LC, Group 4: V-prep+Fuji Ortho LC+Thermocycling. The SBS was measured in Newton on the universal testing machine and the sample was observed under an optical microscope with 10-fold magnification to note the adhesive remnant index score (ARI), before and after thermocycling.120 premolars were used in this study. RMGIC bonding was significantly increased when the surface was prepared at V-prep (P0.001). In these conditions, RMGIC bonding on the buccal surface was similar to that of the composite and superior on the palatal/lingual surface (P=1). After 2 years of aging using a thermocycling machine for simulation, RMGIC bonding significantly decreased (P0.001). The ARI score was significantly lower for the RMGIC group than the composite group (P0.001).RMGIC bonding with V-prep preparation is recommended for palatal/lingual surfaces and for hard-to-dry surfaces. For vestibular surfaces, studies are still needed to recommend bonding with RMGIC instead of composite.

Muscovite/phillipsitic zeolite was introduced as a novel inorganic composite of stunning adsorption properties. The composite was investigated in the uptake reactions of Hg(II), As(V), and U(VI) as highly toxic water contaminants considering different adsorption factors. The adsorption properties of muscovite/phillipsitic zeolite are highly dependent on the pH values and the best decontamination percentages can be obtained at pH 4, pH 5, and pH 5 for Hg(II), As(V), and U(VI), respectively. The kinetic studies demonstrated adsorption equilibrium for Hg(II), As(V), and U(VI) after 360 min, 300 min, and 360 min, respectively. The equilibrium modeling suggested monolayer uptake for all the metals and represented mainly by the Langmuir model considering both the values of determination coefficient and chi-squared (χ2). The estimated maximum capacities are 117 mg/g (Hg(II)), 122.5 mg/g (As(V)), and 138.5 mg/g (U(VI)) which are higher values than several studied adsorbents. The Dubinin–Radushkevich adsorption energies of Hg(II) (19.4 kJ/mol), As(V) (25.6 kJ/mol), and U(VI) (26.47 kJ/mol) signify chemical adsorption mechanisms and close to the obtained values for the ion-exchange process. Additionally, the composite is of high reusability properties and was applied effectively for five decontamination cycles.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have recently been the subject of extensive research as a reinforcing filler. HNT is a natural nanoclay, non-toxic and biocompatible, hence, applicable in biomedical fields. This review focuses on the mechanical, thermal, and functional properties of polymer nanocomposites with HNT as a reinforcing agent from an experimental and theoretical perspective. In addition, this review also highlights the recent applications of polymer/HNT nanocomposites in the biomedical fields.

Vermiculite and micaceous minerals are relevant Cs sorbent in soils and sediments. To understand Cs bioavailability in soils resulting from multi-cation exchanges, Cs sorption onto clay minerals have been carried out in batch experiments with solutions containing Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+. A sequence between a vermiculite and various micaceous structures were achieved by conditioning a vermiculite at various amounts of K. Competing cation exchanges were investigated according to the concentration of Cs. The contribution of K on trace Cs desorption is probed by applying different concentrations of K on Cs-doped vermiculite and micaceous structures. Cs sorption isotherms at chemical equilibrium were combined with elemental mass balances in solution and structural analyses. Cs replace easily Mg2+ > Ca2+ and competes scarcely with K. Cs is strongly adsorbed on the various matrix and a K/Cs ratio about a thousand is required to remobilize Cs. Cs is exchangeable as long as the clay interlayer space remains open to Ca2+. However, excess of K, as well as Cs, in solution leads to the collapse of the interlayer spaces that locks the Cs into the structure. Once K and/or Cs collapse the interlayer space, the external sorption sites are then particularly involved in Cs sorption. Subsequently, Cs+ exchanges preferentially with Ca2+ rather than Mg2+. Mg2+ is extruded from the interlayer space by Cs+ and K+ adsorption, excluded from short interlayer space and replaced by Ca2+ as Cs+ desorbs.

The accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in grains and edible parts of crops poses a risk to human health. Because rice is the staple food of more than half of the world population, reducing Cd uptake by rice is critical for food safety. HydroPotash (HYP), an innovative potassium fertilizer produced with a hydrothermal process, has the characteristics of immobilizing heavy metals and potential use for remediating Cd-contaminated soils. Assembly of biomolecules at solid–water interfaces requires molecules to traverse complex orientation-dependent energy landscapes through processes that are poorly understood, largely due to the dearth of in situ single-molecule measurements and statistical analyses of the rotational dynamics that define directional selection. Emerging capabilities in high-speed atomic force microscopy and machine learning have allowed us to directly determine the orientational energy landscape and observe and quantify the rotational dynamics for protein nanorods on the surface of muscovite mica under a variety of conditions. Comparisons with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show that the transition rates between adjacent orientation-specific energetic minima can largely be understood through traditional models of in-plane Brownian rotation across a biased energy landscape, with resulting transition rates that are exponential in the energy barriers between states. However, transitions between more distant angular states are decoupled from barrier height, with jump-size distributions showing a power law decay that is characteristic of a nonclassical Levy-flight random walk, indicating that large jumps are enabled by alternative modes of motion via activated states. The findings provide insights into the dynamics of biomolecules at solid–liquid interfaces that lead to self-assembly, epitaxial matching, and other orientationally anisotropic outcomes and define a general procedure for exploring such dynamics with implications for hybrid biomolecular–inorganic materials design.

Aim of the present prospective study was to clinically evaluate the long-term performance of two different luting-materials for leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic inlays/onlays after 14 years.A total of 83 IPS-Empress-inlays/onlays were placed in 30 patients. Restorations were luted according to two different strategies: 43 restorations were fixed with a self-adhesive resin-cement (RelyXUnicem, RX), 40 restorations were inserted with VariolinkII-low (SV) after pretreatment with an etch-and-rinse multi-step adhesive. Recalls were performed after two weeks (n=83), two years (n= 82), four years (n=74) and 14 years (n=54). Two independent calibrated examiners evaluated all restorations using modified USPHS-criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using pairwise Mann-Whitney-U-test and Friedman-test (p0.05).After 14 years, 54 restorations in 22 patients were evaluated (eight patients equalling 29 inlays not available). Ten restorations had to be replaced (failure rate 12%); four (SV-group) showed bulk fractures and two (RX-group) exhibited marginal fractures at the 14-year recall. Overall, the SV-group revealed significantly better results regarding discoloration of the luting gap (p0.05) compared to the RX-group. No statistically significant differences were computed between SV and RX for the remaining criteria at the respective recalls (p0.05). However, statistically significant deteriorations were detected for both luting procedures over 14 years regarding "colour match", "marginal integrity" and "tooth integrity" (p0.05).The self-adhesive resin-cement RelyXUnicem showed similar clinical performance to a conventional multi-step luting-procedure after 14 years for most of the test parameters with a slightly inferior performance of RelyXUnicem regarding discoloration of the luting gap.The current study presents unique in-vivo long-term data on two adhesion-strategies for indirect ceramic single-tooth restorations. Differences in performance of the two luting methods after being challenged for 14 years in the oral environment are highlighted. However, the overarching survival rate justifies the recommendation of both methods for clinical routine.

Landfilling is one of the most widely used methods to reduce the impact on the environment and human health by ensuring the management of solid wastes. For the process in question to be called landfill, the landfill leachate must be controlled and liner impermeability conditions must be provided. For this reason, compacted clay liners (CCL) and geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) with very low hydraulic conductivity are often used as hydraulic barriers in landfills to prevent the risk of leachate mixing with groundwater. However, as a result of various interactions between leachate–clay liners, changes occur in the hydraulic conductivity of the liners. In this review, the change (increase/decrease) in the hydraulic conductivity of the landfill liners caused by the contaminants in the leachate composition and the mechanisms responsible for this change were examined. In addition, deficiencies in the literature on this subject were identified and directions for future studies were presented.

Background Mica drugs, a group of herbo-metallic traditional preparations comprising biotite mica as the major mineral ingredient, are prescribed for skin disorders and respiratory ailments and other chronic conditions in South Asian countries, particularly India and Sri Lanka. Mica-based drugs (Abhrak drugs) are subjected to unique and varied preparation procedures and the bioactivity of the drugs can be affected by drug-processing conditions, the ingredients used and the mica composition. The current study aimed to evaluate and compare, on the basis of their physical and chemical characteristics, the antimicrobial potential of two commercial mica drugs AbBb (Abhrak bhashma) and AbCh (Abhrak Chenhuram) and two mica drugs ABL1 (Abhrak Bhasma Laboratory Prepared 1) and ABL2 (Abhrak Bhasma Laboratory Prepared 2) prepared in the laboratory under different conditions. Methods Antimicrobial activity of all four drugs was assessed at 10 mg/ml concentration against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherischia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and Candida albicans using well diffusion assay, agar dilution assay and Miles and Misra method. Major and trace metal constituents of the drug samples were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry. Mineralogical properties, bacteria-mineral interactions, morphological changes in microbes and the surface characteristics of the drugs were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results The drugs ABL1, ABL2 and AbBh exhibited antimicrobial activity against only Gram-positive organisms (S. aureus and MRSA) when tested with Miles and Misra method (broth method). Mineralogical studies (XRD) revealed that biotite mica was altered into secondary clay minerals and iron oxides in the commercial drug AbCh while the other three drugs had altered mica and iron oxide phases. The essential elements (Na, K, Ca and Mg) required for microbial functions were present in varying extents in all four drugs while they were present in exceedingly high amounts in AbCh having comparatively high cation-exchange capacity, consistent with the observation that AbCh was inactive against all the microbes tested. The three drugs (ABL1, ABL2 and AbBh) showing antimicrobial activity contained comparatively high amounts of Fe, Zn and Cu that are known to display antimicrobial properties at high concentrations. SEM studies revealed that the drug particles adhered and entrapped the bacterial species, presumably modifying the physiochemical characteristics of the bacteria and eventually causing lethality. Conclusion Three of the four mica drugs inhibited the tested Gram-negative bacteria and the antibacterial activity of the mica drugs depends on their constituents and the methods of preparation.

Workers involved in crushing, milling, screening, and bagging of mica scrap are at increased risk to develop pneumoconiosis, a progressive material overloading of the lung that can lead to fibrosis and, in the later stages, to dyspnea. Pneumoconiosis is only seen after 10–20 years of respiratory mica exposure, and it can have a latency period of up to 40 years—today’s cases date back to exposures during the second half of the 20th century. An occupational lifetime exposure level of 3 mg/m3 respirable mica dust has been considered to present no risk of pneumoconiosis since 1951 when the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) established a 20 million particles per cubic foot (mppcf) (3.5 mg/m3 respirable particles) exposure limit. As a result, numbers of unspecified and other pneumoconioses in the United States have steadily declined since the early 1970s. Data from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health documents a 91% decrease between 1972 and 2014 (i.e., the peak of documented cases and the latest reported data) for combined cases of aluminosis, berylliosis, stannosis, siderosis, and fibrosis from production and use of bauxite, graphite fibers, wollastonite, cadmium, Portland cement, emery, kaolin, antimony, and mica. Ample evidence indicates that the 70-year-old occupational lifetime exposure level of 3 mg/m3 respirable mica dust is protective of workers’ health.

In the last few decades, the preparation of solid-supported lipid bilayers by immersing a solid substrate in an aqueous solution where the lipid is dissolved with the aid of a surfactant, followed by dilution of the solution, has been reported. In this study, we attempted to interpret the evolution of supported surfactant/lipid assemblies towards the supported lipid bilayer in terms of a phase equilibrium between the supported assembly phase and its ambient solution system consisting of the dispersed surfactant/lipid assembly phase and the bulk solution phase comprising monomeric surfactant and lipid. We characterized the supported assembly formed on hydrophilized Ge or mica substrates in equilibrium with aqueous solutions containing various concentrations of the nonionic surfactant, n-octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (OG) and the amphoteric phospholipid, 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), using interaction-force-profile measurements by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). We also investigated the ambient solution system using equilibrium dialysis to obtain the partition equilibrium profile of OG between the bulk solution and dispersed assembly phases in the micellar or vesicular states. These studies indicate that the properties of the supported assembly depend on the composition of the dispersed assembly and concentration of monomerically dissolved OG. Further, a type of micellar-bilayer state transition occurs in the supported assembly, roughly synchronized with that in the dispersed assembly.

To compare full and partial coverage crowns made with different CAD/CAM leucite reinforced ceramic blocks on fracture resistance and fractographic analysis. Full coverage and partial coverage crowns with finish line at 2 mm and 4 mm above the gingiva for molars made with IPS Empress CAD and Rosetta BM. After fatigue process, the fracture test and fractographic analysis were conducted. Although the fracture resistance of IPS Empress crowns did not show any statistical differences regardless of the design, both the partial coverage crowns fabricated using Rosetta BM showed significantly higher load at break and peak load than the full coverage crown. The crowns made with IPS Empress showed significantly higher fracture resistance than that made with Rosetta BM, regardless of the restorative design. The fracture resistance and fractographic analysis of CAD/CAM leucite reinforced full and partial coverage crowns were influenced by the restorative design of and material type.

The use of visible-driven photocatalysts has fascinated attention as a capable and sustainable approach for wastewater remediation. In this work, BiOBr/carbon quantum dot (CQDs)/saponite composites (CQDs/Clay@BiOBr) were fabricated via hydrothermally using two different CQDs/Clay precursors (in-situ synthesis (IS) and physical mixing (PM)). The obtained products were characterized, and the photocatalytic performances of the prepared samples were evaluated in the photocatalytic decomposition of emerging ciprofloxacin (CIP) pharmaceutical waste. The highest CIP mineralization performance was achieved when a combination of BiOBr and CQDs/Clay (IS) with the appropriate proportion because the strong adhesion between CQDs and clay generate a great heterojunction in the composite. The stronger interaction of CQDs and better distribution of CQDs on the surface of clay in the CQDs/Clay (IS) enhanced the interaction of BiOBr and CQDs, and avoided the re-agglomeration of excess of CQDs on surface of BiOBr which reduce the active surface to receive the light and react with CIP. The ultrafast degradation rate of the optimized CQDs/Clay@BiOBr composite was better compared to others. The significant improvement in the CIP degradation efficiency of the CQDs/Clay@BiOBr composite was attributed to the excellent separation and transportation of photogenerated electrons and holes, as confirmed by photoluminescence, photocurrent density, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results. Moreover, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of CIP in the CQDs/Clay@BiOBr composite was proposed based on the electronic states of each material in the composite and on a scavenger test. Thus, the proposed CQDs/Clay@BiOBr composite can be employed as a potential visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the decomposition of organic contaminants in wastewater.
