Abstract

We present results of the Relic Axion Dark-Matter Exploratory Setup (RADES), a detector which is part of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), searching for axion dark matter in the 34.67$��$eV mass range. A radio frequency cavity consisting of 5 sub-cavities coupled by inductive irises took physics data inside the CAST dipole magnet for the first time using this filter-like haloscope geometry. An exclusion limit with a 95% credibility level on the axion-photon coupling constant of g$_{a��}\gtrsim 4\times10^{-13} \text{GeV}^{-1}$ over a mass range of 34.6738 $��$eV < $m_a$ < 34.6771 $��$eV is set. This constitutes a significant improvement over the current strongest limit set by CAST at this mass and is at the same time one of the most sensitive direct searches for an axion dark matter candidate above the mass of 25 $��$eV. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of exploring a wider mass range around the value probed by CAST-RADES in this work using similar coherent resonant cavities., 14 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

We investigate the prospects for direct detection of Dark Matter (DM) particles, such as dark photons, incident on the upper atmosphere. A recent work relates the burst-like temperature excursions in the stratosphere at heights of ~38-47 km with incident invisible streaming matter. Surprisingly, dark photons match the reasoning presented in that work provided they constitute part of the local DM density. Dark photons mix with real photons with the same total energy without the need for an external field as would be required for instance for axions. Furthermore, the ionospheric plasma column above the stratosphere can enhance the dark photon to photon conversion due to resonance. The stratosphere is easily accessible via balloon flights. Balloon missions with up to a few tons of payload can be readily assembled to operate for 1-2 months at such atmospheric heights making for realistic short term endeavor of on-site direct DM search following this proposal. The approach need not be limited to streaming dark photons as other DM candidates might be searched simultaneously. Combining different types of measurements in a multi-band detector system and/or relating such investigations with other concurrent atmospheric observations, e.g. from space, may be proven to be the missing new approach in direct DM detection.

Abstract

A new search strategy for the detection of the elusive dark matter (DM) axion is proposed. The idea is based on streaming DM axions, whose flux might get temporally enormously enhanced due to gravitational lensing. This can happen if the Sun or some planet (including the Moon) is found along the direction of a DM stream propagating towards the Earth location. The experimental requirements to the axion haloscope are a wide-band performance combined with a fast axion rest mass scanning mode, which are feasible. Once both conditions have been implemented in a haloscope, the axion search can continue parasitically almost as before. Interestingly, some new DM axion detectors are operating wide-band by default. In order not to miss the actually unpredictable timing of a potential short duration signal, a network of co-ordinated axion antennae is required, preferentially distributed world-wide. Abstract

We report on a direct search for sub-GeV dark photons (A′), which might be produced in the reaction e−Z→e−ZA′ via kinetic mixing with photons by 100 GeV electrons incident on an active target in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. The dark photons would decay invisibly into dark matter particles resulting in events with large missing energy. No evidence for such decays was found with 2.75×109 electrons on target. We set new limits on the γ−A′ mixing strength and exclude the invisible A′ with a mass ≲100 MeV as an explanation of the muon gμ−2 anomaly., Physical Review Letters, 118 (1), ISSN:0031-9007, ISSN:1079-7114

Abstract

The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a new generation axion helioscope aiming at a sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling of g(alpha gamma) >~ few x 10-12 GeV**-1}, i.e. 1 - 1.5 orders of magnitude beyond the one currently achieved by CAST. The project relies on improvements in magnetic field volume together with extensive use of x-ray focusing optics and low background detectors, innovations already successfully tested in CAST. Additional physics cases of IAXO could include the detection of electron-coupled axions invoked to explain the white dwarf cooling, relic axions, and a large variety of more generic axion-like particles (ALPs) and other novel excitations at the low-energy frontier of elementary particle physics. Abstract

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for a -> gamma conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the x-ray refractive mass m_gamma to the axion search mass m_a. After the vacuum phase (2003-2004), which is optimal for m_a less than or similar to 0.02 eV, we used He-4 in 2005-2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02-0.39 eV and He-3 in 2009-2011 to scan from 0.39 to 1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to He-4 in 2012 to investigate a narrow m_a range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39-0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with He-4, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to g_a_gamma < 1.47 x 10^(-10) GeV^(-1) (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings. Since 2013, we have returned to the vacuum and aim for a significant increase in sensitivity.

Abstract

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has finished its search for solar axions with 3He buffer gas, covering the search range 0.64 eV < m_a < 1.17 eV. This closes the gap to the cosmological hot dark matter limit and actually overlaps with it. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g_aγ < 3.3×10^(−10) GeV^(−1) at 95% C.L., with the exact value depending on the pressure setting. Future direct solar axion searches will focus on increasing the sensitivity to smaller values of g_aγ, for example by the currently discussed next generation helioscope International AXion Observatory.

Abstract

Dark sectors, consisting of new, light, weakly-coupled particles that do not interact with the known strong, weak, or electromagnetic forces, are a particularly compelling possibility for new physics. Nature may contain numerous dark sectors, each with their own beautiful structure, distinct particles, and forces. This review summarizes the physics motivation for dark sectors and the exciting opportunities for experimental exploration. It is the summary of the Intensity Frontier subgroup "New, Light, Weakly-coupled Particles" of the Community Summer Study 2013 (Snowmass). We discuss axions, which solve the strong CP problem and are an excellent dark matter candidate, and their generalization to axion-like particles. We also review dark photons and other dark-sector particles, including sub-GeV dark matter, which are theoretically natural, provide for dark matter candidates or new dark matter interactions, and could resolve outstanding puzzles in particle and astro-particle physics. In many cases, the exploration of dark sectors can proceed with existing facilities and comparatively modest experiments. Abstract

We carried out a model-independent search for light scalar or pseudoscalar particles a's (an example of which is the axion) that couple to two photons by using a photon-regeneration method at high energies allowing a substantial increase in the sensitivity to eV masses. The experimental set-up is based on elements of the CERN West Area Neutrino Facility (WANF) beam Line and the NOMAD neutrino detector. The new particles, if they exist, could be produced through the Primakoff effect in interactions of high energy photons, generated by the 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target, with virtual photons from the WANF horn magnetic field. The particles would penetrate the downstream shielding and would be observed in the NOMAD neutrino detector through their re-conversion into real high energy photons by interacting with the virtual photons from the magnetic field of the NOMAD dipole magnet. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996 run with 1.08 x 10(19) protons on target, 312 candidate events with energy between 5 and 140 GeV were found. This number is in general agreement with the expectation of 272 +/- 18 background events from standard neutrino processes. A 90 % CL upper limit on the a gamma gamma-coupling g(a gamma gamma) < 1.5 x 10(-4) GeV-1 for a masses up to 40 eV is obtained. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The trigger mechanism of the energy release of solar flares is still unknown. This work provides additional evidence on the involvement of exotic particles like axions and/or other WISPs. The axion scenario suggests a dynamical behaviour behind white-light (WL) solar flares, which results to the measured spectral shape, and, the timing between visible-UV light and soft X-rays. Similarly, axions converted some 1000 km inside the photosphere with a rest mass of ~17 meV fit the unexpected soft X-ray emission from the quietest Sun in 2009, i.e., the manifestation of the solar corona problem. Abstract

X-ray flares and other solar brightenings have been discarded as potential axion signatures. An axion X-ray signal must appear exclusively near the disk centre, and its spectrum must peak at ~4.2keV, contrary to observation. We argue here that due to Compton scattering off the (plasma) electrons the outward propagation of X-rays from axions converted near the Sun's surface can explain energy distribution and non direcivity. Simulation points at the photosphere as the birth place of the presumed axion conversion, implying an axion rest mass of ~0.01eV. At present, even optimistic parameter values can not reproduce the measured intensities. The simulated photon spectrum peaks at low energies. Abstract

We have searched for solar axions or other pseudoscalar particles that couple to two photons by using the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) setup. Whereas we previously have reported results from CAST with evacuated magnet bores (Phase I), setting limits on lower mass axions, here we report results from CAST where the magnet bores were filled with \hefour gas (Phase II) of variable pressure. The introduction of gas generated a refractive photon mass $m_\gamma$, thereby achieving the maximum possible conversion rate for those axion masses \ma that match $m_\gamma$. With 160 different pressure settings we have scanned \ma up to about 0.4 eV, taking approximately 2 h of data for each setting. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun, we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of $\gag\lesssim 2.17\times 10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ at 95% CL for $\ma \lesssim 0.4$ eV, the exact result depending on the pressure setting. The excluded parameter range covers realistic axion models with a Peccei-Quinn scale in the neighborhood of $f_{\rm a}\sim10^{7}$ GeV. Currently in the second part of CAST Phase II, we are searching for axions with masses up to about 1.2 eV using \hethree as a buffer gas., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Axions are expected to be produced in the sun via the Primakoff process. They may be detected through the inverse process in the laboratory, under the influence of a strong magnetic field, giving rise to X-rays of energies in the range of a few keV. Such an Axion detector is the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), collecting data since 2003. Results have been published, pushing the axion-photon coupling g$_{a\gamma}$ below the 10$^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ limit at 95% CL, for axion masses less than 0.02 eV. This limit is nearly an order of magnitude lower than previous experimental limits and surpassed for the first time limits set from astrophysical arguments based on the energy-loss concept. Abstract

The CAST experiment is being mounted at CERN. It will make use of a decommissioned LHC test magnet to look for solar axions through its conversion into photons inside the magnetic field. The magnet has a field of 9 Tesla and length of 10 m and is installed in a platform which allows to move it ~8 degrees vertically and ~40 degrees horizontally. Abstract

The C_{60} molecule exhibits a remarkable stability and inertness that leads to its survival in ancient carbonaceous rocks initially subject to the high temperatures requisite for its formation. Elementary particles having very high electronic stopping powers can similarly form C_{60} and higher fullerenes in their wake. Combined, these two features point at the possibility of using the C_{60} presence (or absence) in selected bulk geological samples as a new type of solid-state nuclear track detector, with applications in astro-particle physics., Comment: Final version (few modifications). Abstract

Conventional physics cannot explain bioeffects caused by ELF fields [1]. A (double) resonance interaction of ELF radiation with the highly sub-thermal coherent motion of spiral waves in living matter (LM) is suggested. The (geo)magnetic cyclotron resonance (CR) absorption by the constituent ions can drastically change their non-thermal degrees of freedom in the spiral state, destroying their pattern, which is heuristically assumed to be part of the cell signaling. Combining ELF irradiation with calcium imaging to unravel the suggested mechanism, a new instrument in biomedicine might emerge. These fascinating waves, being part of the bio-machinery, might provide insight in cancer, embryogenesis, etc., as they are affected by ELF radiation in an as yet unknown manner [2-6]., Comment: 10 pages, LaTex file

Abstract

CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) is a helioscope looking for axions coming from the solar core to the Earth. The experiment, located at CERN, is based on the Primakoff effect and uses a magnetic field of 9 Tesla provided by a decommissioned LHC magnet. CAST is able to follow the Sun during sunrise and sunset and therefore three X-ray detectors are mounted on both ends of the magnet waiting for a photon from axion-to-photon conversion due to the Primakoff effect. During its first phase, which concluded in 2004, CAST has been looking for axions with masses up to 0.02 eV. CAST’ s second phase manages to re-establish the coherence needed to scan for axions with masses up to 1.16 eV by using a buffer gas. This technique enables the experiment to look into the theoretical regions for axions. During the years 2005 and 2006, the use of 4He in CAST has already provided coherence in order to look for axions with masses up to 0.4 eV.

Abstract

The new axion helioscope at CERN started acquiring data during September of 2002: CAST (Cern Axion Solar Telescope) employs a decommissioned LHC dipole magnet to convert putative solar axions or axion-like particles into detectable photons. The unprecedented dipole magnet intensity and length (9.5 T, 10 m) results in a projected sensitivity that surpasses astrophysical constraints on these particles for the first time, increasing the chance of discovery. The use of X-ray focusing optics and state-of-the-art detector technology has led to an extremely low background for an experiment above ground. A brief status report is given, with emphasis on the tracking and control system and possible future extensions. Abstract

The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment at CERN searches for solar axions with energies in the keV range. It is possible that axions are produced in the core of the sun by the interaction of thermal photons with virtual photons of strong electromagnetic fields. In this experiment, the solar axions can be reconverted to photons in the transversal field of a 9 Tesla superconducting magnet. At both ends of the 10m-long dipole magnet three different X-ray detectors were installed, which are sensitive in the interesting photon energy range. Abstract

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is searching for axions produced by the Primakoff process in the solar core. CAST is using a dipole magnet where axions could be converted back into X-rays. Phase I data analysis resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the axionphoton coupling constant for ma .0.02 eV. In CAST Phase II, the sensitivity is extended to higher axion masses. Results of the analysis of 2005 and 2006 data, covering the range ma .0.4 eV, will be presented. Currently CAST is searching for axions with masses up to 1.2 eV.

Abstract

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) searches for a -> gamma conversion in the 9 T magnetic field of a refurbished LHC test magnet that can be directed toward the Sun. Two parallel magnet bores can be filled with helium of adjustable pressure to match the x-ray refractive mass m(gamma) to the axion search mass m(a). After the vacuum phase (2003-2004), which is optimal for m(a) less than or similar to 0.02 eV, we used He-4 in 2005-2007 to cover the mass range of 0.02-0.39 eV and He-3 in 2009-2011 to scan from 0.39 to 1.17 eV. After improving the detectors and shielding, we returned to He-4 in 2012 to investigate a narrow m(a) range around 0.2 eV ("candidate setting" of our earlier search) and 0.39-0.42 eV, the upper axion mass range reachable with He-4, to "cross the axion line" for the KSVZ model. We have improved the limit on the axion-photon coupling to g(a gamma) < 1.47 x 10(-10) GeV-1 (95% C.L.), depending on the pressure settings. Since 2013, we have returned to the vacuum and aim for a significant increase in sensitivity.

Abstract

This Letter of Intent describes IAXO, the International Axion Observatory, a proposed 4th generation axion helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) originating in the Sun via the Primakoff conversion of the solar plasma photons. In terms of signal to background ratio, IAXO will be about 4-5 orders of magnitude more sensitive than CAST, which means that this instrument will reach sensitivity to axion-photon couplings down to a few $\times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$. IAXO has the potential for the discovery of axions and other ALPs, since it will deeply enter into unexplored parameter space. At the very least it will firmly exclude a large region of this space of high cosmological and astrophysical relevance. In particular it will probe a large fraction of the high mass part (1 meV to 1 eV) of the QCD axion allowed window. Additional physics cases for IAXO include the possibility of detecting solar axions produced by mechanisms mediated by the axion-electron coupling $g_{ae}$ with sensitivity $-$for the first time$-$ to values of $g_{ae}$ not previously excluded by astrophysics. IAXO follows the conceptual layout of an enhanced axion helioscope, with a purpose-built 8-coils toroidal superconducting magnet. All the eight 60-cm diameter magnet bores are equipped with focusing x-ray optics, able to focus the signal photons into $\sim$0.2 cm$^2$ spots that are imaged by ultra-low-background Micromegas x-ray detectors. The magnet is built into a structure with elevation and azimuth drives the will allow for solar tracking for $\sim$12 h each day. All the enabling technologies exists, there is no need for development. All the needed know-how is present in the proponent groups. Potential additional physics cases for IAXO to be developed in the future are the search of axionic dark radiation, relic cold dark matter axions or the realization of microwave light-shining-through wall setups, as well as the search of more specific models of weakly interacting sub-eV particles (WISPs) at the low energy frontier of particle physics. IAXO has the potential to serve as a multi-purpose facility for generic axion and ALP research in the next decade.

Abstract

The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of a LHC prototype dipole. In the phase II, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet bore apertures in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to larger axion masses. Preliminary results from the analysis of this second phase with He inside the magnet pipes excludes axions down to $g_{aγ}$ < 2.2 · $10^{−10}GeV^{−1}$ at 95% C.L. for 0.02 eV < $m_{\alpha}$ < 0.39 eV. The data analysis has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons and for the first time experimental result has entered the theory motivated axion parameter space. At the beginning of 2008, data started to be taken with He in the magnet pipes in order to extend the sensitivity to axion masses up to 1.2 eV.

Çetin, Serkant Ali (Dogus Author) -- Arık, Metin (Dogus Author) -- Yıldız, Süleyman Cenk (Dogus Author) Although they have not yet been detected, axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) continue to maintain the interest (even increasingly so) of the rare-event searches community as viable candidates for the Dark Matter of the Universe but also as a solution for several other puzzles of astrophysics. Their property of coupling to photons has inspired different experimental methods for their detection, one of which is the helioscope technique. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is the most sensitive helioscope built up to date and has recently published part of the latest data taken with the magnet bores gradually filled with He-3, probing the mass range up to 1.17 eV. The International AXion Observatory (IAXO) is being proposed as a facility where different axion studies can be performed, with the primary goal to study axions coming from the Sun. Designed to maximize sensitivity, it will improve the levels reached by CAST by almost 5 orders of magnitude in signal detection, that is more than one order of magnitude in terms of gay. Here we will summarize the most important aspects of the helioscopes, and focus mainly on IAXO, based on the recent papers [1, 2].

The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a proposed 4th-generation axion helioscope with the primary physics research goal to search for solar axions via their Primakoff conversion into photons of 1 - 10 keV energies in a strong magnetic field. IAXO will achieve a sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling gaγ down to a few ×10-12 GeV-1 for a wide range of axion masses up to ∼ 0.25 eV. This is an improvement over the currently best (3rd generation) axion helioscope, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), of about 5 orders of magnitude in signal strength, corresponding to a factor ∼ 20 in the axion photon coupling. IAXO's sensitivity relies on the construction of a large superconducting 8-coil toroidal magnet of 20 m length optimized for axion research. Each of the eight 60 cm diameter magnet bores is equipped with x-ray optics focusing the signal photons into ∼ 0.2 cm2 spots that are imaged by very low background x-ray detectors. The magnet will be built into a structure with elevation and azimuth drives that will allow solar tracking for 12 hours each day. Abstract

Light scalar fields can drive the accelerated expansion of the universe. Hence, they are obvious dark energy candidates. To make such models compatible with tests of General Relativity in the solar system and "fifth force" searches on Earth, one needs to screen them. One possibility is the so-called "chameleon" mechanism, which renders an effective mass depending on the local matter density. If chameleon particles exist, they can be produced in the sun and detected on Earth exploiting the equivalent of a radiation pressure. Since their effective mass scales with the local matter density, chameleons can be reflected by a dense medium if their effective mass becomes greater than their total energy. Thus, under appropriate conditions, a flux of solar chameleons may be sensed by detecting the total instantaneous momentum transferred to a suitable opto-mechanical force/pressure sensor. We calculate the solar chameleon spectrum and the reach in the chameleon parameter space of an experiment using the preliminary results from a force/pressure sensor, currently under development at INFN Trieste, to be mounted in the focal plane of one of the X-Ray telescopes of the CAST experiment at CERN. Abstract

We calculate the total cross section for the production of photons from the scattering of axions by a strong inhomogeneous magnetic field in the form of a 2D delta-function, a cylindrical step function and a 2D Gaussian distribution, which can be approximately produced by a solenoidal current. The theoretical result is used to estimate the axion-photon conversion probability which could be expected in a reasonable experimental situation. The calculated conversion probabilities for QCD inspired axions are bigger by a factor of 2.67 (for the cylindrical step function case) than those derived by applying the celebrated 1D calculation of the (inverse) coherent Primakoff effect. We also consider scattering at a resonance $E_{axion} \sim m_{axion}$, which corresponds to the scattering from a delta-function and gives the most enhanced results. Finally, we analyze the results of this work in the astrophysical extension to suggest a way in which they may be directed to a solution to some basic solar physics problems and, in particular, the coronal heating problem., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, added analysis of our results in the astrophysical extension
