Abstract

The reduced transition probabilities B ( E 2 ; 0 g.s. + → 2 1 + , 2 2 + ) in Zn 70 and the full B ( E 2 ; 0 g.s. + → 2 + ) strength up to S n = 7.79 MeV in Ni 68 have been determined at the LISE/GANIL facility using the Coulomb-excitation technique at intermediate beam energy on a Pb 208 target. The γ rays emitted in-flight were detected with an array of 46 BaF 2 crystals. The angles of the deflected nuclei were determined in order to disentangle and extract the Coulomb and nuclear contributions to the excitation of the 2 + states. The measured B ( E 2 ; 0 g.s. + → 2 1 + ) of 1432(124) e 2 fm 4 for Zn 70 falls in the lower part of the published values which clustered either around 1600 or above 2000 e 2 fm 4 , while the B ( E 2 ; 0 g.s. + → 2 2 + ) of 53(7) e 2 fm 4 agrees very well with the two published values. The relatively low B ( E 2 ; 0 g.s. + → 2 1 + ) of 301(38) e 2 fm 4 for Ni 68 agrees with previous studies and confirms a local magicity at Z = 28 , N = 40 . Combining the results of the low-energy spectra of Ni 68 and Zn 70 and their shell-model interpretations, it is interesting to notice that four different shapes (spherical, oblate, prolate, and triaxial) are present. Finally, a summed E 2 strength of only about 150 e 2 fm 4 has been found experimentally at high excitation energy, likely due to proton excitations across the Z = 28 gap. The experimental distribution of this high-energy E 2 excitation agrees with shell-model calculations, but its strength is about two times weaker.

Abstract

11 pags., 8 figs., 2 tabs., The β decay of the semimagic Sn isotopes Sn136,137,138 has been studied at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The first experimental information on excited states was obtained for Sb137 while, in the case of Sb136, the established excitation scheme could be extended by ten previously unidentified levels. In the decay of the most-neutron-rich isotope Sn138, two γ rays were observed for the first time. The new experimental results, in combination with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations, provide the first information with respect to the evolution of the 0g7/2 and 1d5/2 proton single-particle states with increasing neutron number beyond N=84., We thank the staff of the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator complex for providing high-intensity beams to the experiment. the beta-decay half-lives of 94 neutron-rich nuclei 144-151Cs; 146-155Ba; 148-156La; 150-158Ce; 153-160Pr; 156-162Nd; 159-163Pm; 160-166Sm; 161-168eu; 165-170Gd, 166-172Tb; 169-173Dy; 172-175Ho, and 2 isomeric states 174mEr and 172mDy were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory providing a new experimental basis to test theoetical models. Strikingl large drops of beta-decay half-lives are observed at neutron-number N=97 for Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm and N=105 for eu, Gd, Tb and Dy.

Abstract

The decay of an isomeric state in the neutron-rich nucleus 129 Cd has been observed via the detection of internal conversion and Compton electrons providing first experimental information on excited states in this nucleus. The isomer was populated in the projectile fission of a 238 U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. From the measured yields of γ -rays and internal conversion electrons, a multipolarity of E 3 was tentatively assigned to the isomeric transition. A half-life of T 1 / 2 = 3.6 ( 2 ) ms was determined for the new state which was assigned a spin of ( 21 / 2 + ) , based on a comparison to shell model calculations performed using state-of-the-art realistic effective interactions.

Abstract

The level structure of the neutron-rich ^{77}Cu nucleus is investigated through β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. Ions of ^{77}Ni are produced by in-flight fission, separated and identified in the BigRIPS fragment separator, and implanted in the WAS3ABi silicon detector array, surrounded by Ge cluster detectors of the EURICA array. A large number of excited states in ^{77}Cu are identified for the first time by correlating γ rays with the β decay of ^{77}Ni, and a level scheme is constructed by utilizing their coincidence relationships. The good agreement between large-scale Monte Carlo shell model calculations and experimental results allows for the evaluation of the single-particle structure near ^{78}Ni and suggests a single-particle nature for both the 5/2_{1}^{-} and 3/2_{1}^{-} states in ^{77}Cu, leading to doubly magic ^{78}Ni.

Abstract

The β-decay half-lives of 94 neutron-rich nuclei ^{144-151}Cs, ^{146-154}Ba, ^{148-156}La, ^{150-158}Ce, ^{153-160}Pr, ^{156-162}Nd, ^{159-163}Pm, ^{160-166}Sm, ^{161-168}Eu, ^{165-170}Gd, ^{166-172}Tb, ^{169-173}Dy, ^{172-175}Ho, and two isomeric states ^{174m}Er, ^{172m}Dy were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, providing a new experimental basis to test theoretical models. Strikingly large drops of β-decay half-lives are observed at neutron-number N=97 for _{58}Ce, _{59}Pr, _{60}Nd, and _{62}Sm, and N=105 for _{63}Eu, _{64}Gd, _{65}Tb, and _{66}Dy. Features in the data mirror the interplay between pairing effects and microscopic structure. r-process network calculations performed for a range of mass models and astrophysical conditions show that the 57 half-lives measured for the first time play an important role in shaping the abundance pattern of rare-earth elements in the solar system.

Abstract

For the first time, the γ decay of excited states has been observed in a nucleus situated in the quadrant south-east of doubly magic Sn132, a region in which experimental information so far is limited to ground-state properties. Six γ rays with energies of 50, 86, 103, 227, 357, and 602 keV were observed following the β-delayed neutron emission from Cd85133, populated in the projectile fission of a U238 beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN within the EURICA project. The new experimental information is compared to the results of a modern realistic shell-model calculation, the first one in this region very far from stability, focusing in particular on the π0g9/2-1 - ν1f7/2 particle-hole multiplet in In83132. In addition, theoretical estimates based on a scaling of the two-body matrix elements for the πh11/2-1 - νg9/2 analog multiplet in Tl127208, one major proton and one major neutron shell above, are presented. © 2016 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Nitrogen containing bases from various crude oils were analysed by combinations of chromatographic (gas and liquid), mass spectrometric (electron impact and chemical ionization mode), and UV spectroscopic methods. Optimized and complementary techniques, together with a selective extraction step, are necessary for the elucidation of the chemical structures of these highly polar and high-boiling substances. The isolated compounds are mainly monoaza-arenes with from 2 to 8 fused aromatic rings. They were found to occur in almost identical distributions in every crude oil which we have analysed.
