Bisimulations are a key notion to study the expressive power of a modal language. This paper studies the expressivity of Game Description Language (GDL) and its epistemic extension Epistemic GDL (EGDL) through a bisimulation approach. We first define a notion of bisimulation for GDL and prove that it coincides with the indistinguishability of GDL formulas. Based on it, we establish a characterization of the definability of GDL in terms of $k$-bisimulations. Then we design novel notions of bisimulation for EGDL and obtain characterizations of the expressive power of EGDL in terms of them. These characterizations provide a powerful tool to identify the expressive power of game description languages. Finally, we demonstrate with real games that bisimulation can be generalized to capture a wide range of game equivalence.

The Neotethyan subduction and collision with the Asian, Indian, and Australian plates is evidenced by a giant Andean-type arc system and a remarkable Neotethyan igneous belt along the southwestern Eurasian margin. However, the southward extent, and cause, of Neotethyan subduction is poorly understood. Here, a zircon U-Pb dating and whole-rock geochemical study of two groups of Eocene (50−48 Ma) mafic intrusions from Tangse, North Sumatra, helps to unravel the Neotethyan subduction story. Group 1 consists of diabase samples, which have mid-oceanic-ridge− and arc-like geochemical affinities, with low chondrite-normalized La/Yb(cn) (∼0.6) ratios and a high measured εNd(t) value of +8.7. Such geochemical signatures indicate that the magmatic rocks were derived from a refractory depleted mantle source that was metasomatized by slab melts. Group 2 consists of gabbro-diorites, which are enriched in the large-ion lithophile elements and depleted in some high field strength elements. These samples have high La/Yb(cn) (2.9−6.6), low Nb/La(cn) (0.2−0.3), εNd(t) values of +1.1 to +5.0, and εHf(t) values of +8.8 to +15.3. Group 2 samples were produced by the melting of a depleted mantle wedge metasomatized by slab fluids. The magmatism provides evidence for the southern continuation of the Neotethyan igneous belt and tectonic system, whereby slab rollback triggered melting and upwelling in an arc−back-arc geodynamic system from South Tibet to SE Asia.

The geodynamic evolution of the Palaeo-Tethyan Ocean is key to understanding the development of Pangaea. The main continents of SE Asia were welded together in response to the closure of the Palaeo-Tethyan Ocean. However, the precise location of the sutures and timing of the collisions are poorly constrained, especially the southward continuation from Peninsular Malaysia into west Indonesia. This study presents new zircon U–Pb geochronological, petrological, elemental and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–O isotopic data in order to investigate the origin and tectonic setting of the granitoids from the Bangka and Belitung islands, west Indonesia. Although possessing different mineral compositions, the two groups of samples yield similar crystallization ages of c. 230–220 Ma and enriched Nd–Hf isotopic compositions (whole-rock ε Nd ( t ) = −9.6 to −2.4 and zircon ε Hf ( t ) = −12.1 to −0.1), and probably originated from melting of a mixed source of metagreywacke and metapelite with a subordinate meta-igneous component. Both granitic groups formed during post-collisional processes, and when this interpretation is combined with regional investigations on the granitic magmatism, the Bangka–Belitung granitoids may represent the southward continuation of the Main Range granitoids. If correct, the distribution of granitoids with distinct petrogenesis across both islands implies a location for the Palaeo-Tethyan suture zone between Bangka–Belitung and West Kalimantan.

The Lincang-Inthanon tectonic belt is a major tectonic boundary within the southeastern Tibetan Plateau and Indo-China Peninsula, which are typical examples of tectonic extrusion in SE Asia. The Lincang strain zone, Lancang-Gengma fault, and Inthanon metamorphic complex make up this nearly N–S-striking tectonic belt, which separates the Baoshan–Shan Thai and Simao-Indochina terranes. New petrographic, structural, and mica 40Ar/39Ar geochronological studies were conducted to reveal their deformation styles and constrain the timing of their tectonic evolution. W–E-directed compression related to the subduction of the Paleotethyan Ocean with subsequent continental collision and sinistral ductile shearing in the early Oligocene are recorded along the Lincang strain zone. The Lancang-Gengma fault zone switched from sinistral shearing to dextral motion in the late Cenozoic and shows a deformation history similar to that of the parallel Red River fault. The Inthanon metamorphic complex may have experienced crustal shortening in the early Cenozoic, followed by sinistral transtension in the early Miocene. The Lincang-Inthanon tectonic belt shows many lithological, tectonic evolutionary, and metamorphic similarities with the Gaoligong, Chongshan, and Ailaoshan–Red River shear zones. Therefore, the sinistral shearing along the Lincang-Inthanon tectonic belt and the Chongshan shear zone in the north, which may have initiated since the early Oligocene, played an important role in adjusting differential extrusion and rotation of the Baoshan–Shan Thai and Simao-Indochina terranes. Our results delineate the regional tectonic framework and provide insights into the characteristics and geodynamics of intracontinental deformation in the eastern India-Eurasia oblique convergence zone.

The effects of the broth on the contents of skin barrier-related proteins kallikrein-7 (KLK-7), filaggrin (FLG) and aquaporin (AQP3) in the UVB-induced damage and repair of the HaCaT mechanism are also comprehensively discussed. The effect of DF on the activation of MAPK pathway proteins was detected by PCR. The navigation satellites are running at a high altitude of 20000 km from the ground, and the satellite signals arriving at the ground are very weak, such as the C/A code on the L1 band, which is only -160 dBW. In complex urban environments, especially when there is an occlusion, the signal power will be even lower. Low power causes the signal to be easily disturbed, where suppressed interference is the most common method of interference. The purpose of this paper is to experiment with the BPSK and BOC signal system to do the narrowband suppression of interference analysis and set up the actual test environment, based on the commonly used LMS algorithm for the two systems of narrowband interference performance contrast analysis, and throughout the simulation, it can be seen that the two improved algorithms can effectively suppress narrowband interference, thus improving the anti-interference performance of satellite navigation receiver.

The Jurassic magmatism in the southeastern South China Block has been interpreted as extension-related, yet its tectonic drivers remain unclear. Tectonic models vary between two end-members: (1) Palaeopacific subduction-related; and (2) intracontinental extension-related. This study presents new geochronological and geochemical data for the Late Jurassic mafic rocks in the southeastern South China Block that allow us to differentiate between these tectonic models. The Late Jurassic mafic rocks yielded crystallization ages of 162–157 Ma. Our new geochemical data, together with previously published data, can be divided into three groups: group A with variable ε Nd ( t ) (+0.1 to +3.4) and zircon ε Hf ( t ) (−4.1 to +15.9) values has slightly negative Nb–Ta anomalies; group B is characterized by negative Nb–Ta anomalies with varying ε Nd ( t ) (+1.4 to +1.5) and ε Hf ( t ) (–3.0 to +2.6) values; and group C displays significant Nb–Ta anomalies with high ε Nd ( t ) (+4.5 to +6.6) and ε Hf ( t ) (+6.4 to +14.4) values. The geochemical characteristics suggest that groups A and B are mainly the products of asthenosphere–lithosphere interactions and group C was derived from the asthenosphere. Our new data, together with geological observations, suggest that the Late Jurassic magmatism in the southeastern South China Block probably resulted from asthenospheric upwelling in an intracontinental extension setting due to the far-field effects of the subduction of the Palaeopacific Ocean. Cretaceous igneous rocks in SW Borneo are significant for investigating the Paleo-Pacific subduction and regional correlation. This paper presents new zircon ages and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–O isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data for the Cretaceous granitoids in the Schwaner Mountains. These granitoid samples yield formation ages of 92–80 Ma and can be geochemically subdivided into Group 1 biotite granite and granodiorite and Group 2 monzogranite. Group 1 has higher εHf t values of +1.2–+14.5 and lower δ18O values of 5.2–6.6‰ than Group 2 with εHf t and δ18O values of −1.5–+5.9 and 6.1–6.6‰, respectively. Group 1 samples show variable εNd t values of −1.9–+1.7, (206Pb/204Pb)i ratios of 18.63–19.29, (207Pb/204Pb)i ratios of 15.62–15.69, and (208Pb/204Pb)i ratios of 38.67–39.49 and are the products of partial melting of newly underplated mafic rocks with a component of crustal rocks. Group 2 with slightly negative εNd t values of −1.1–−1.5 was originated from partial melting of metasedimentary rocks with a juvenile mafic component. These granitoids were formed in a continental arc setting related to the Paleo-Pacific subduction during the Late Cretaceous and can compare with those contemporaneous I-type granites along the Kuching zone in NW Borneo. Those Late Cretaceous granitoids with A-type affinities from the easternmost Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore to the east of Sundaland might be formed in a back-arc extensional setting after the Paleo-Pacific subduction.

This work demonstrates a mid-infrared emitter based on Ge8Sb2Te11 (GST) and VO2. The results show that GST and VO2 have contrasting optical properties, which enable the emitter to reach a modulation depth of up to 82.5%. Continuous modulation of the resonant peak in the broad spectral range of 6.3–9.2 μm was achieved by modulating the crystallization ratio of the top GST layer. The structure can reach a controllable average emissivity of 11.5%–83.4% within 5–8 μm, 2.0%–19.0% at 8–14 μm, and 6.0%–47.3% at 3–5 μm, which is close to an ideal thermal emitter performance. Moreover, the structure is insensitive to both incident angle and polarization.

Logs are imperative in the management process of networks and services. However, manually identifying and classifying anomalous logs is time-consuming, error-prone, and labor-intensive. Additionally, rule-based approaches cannot tackle the challenges underlying anomalous log identification and classification resulting from new types of logs and partial labels. We propose LogClass, a framework to automatically and robustly identify and classify anomalous logs for network and service based on partial labels . LogClass combines a word representation method, a positive and unlabeled learning (PU learning) model, and a machine learning classifier. Besides, we propose a novel Inverse Location Frequency (ILF) method to weight the words of logs in feature construction properly. We evaluate the performance of LogClass based on 18 million+ real-world switch logs and six public log datasets. It achieves 99.56% and 98% F1 scores in anomalous log identification on switch logs and publicly available supercomputer logs, respectively, and very-close-to-one F1 score in anomalous log classification. Moreover, we have conducted extensive experiments to demonstrate LogClass’ superior performance in addressing partial labels and new types of logs.

This article investigates the design of a 1 kV, 5 kA solid-state circuit breaker by using parallel connection of reverse blocking IGCTs (RB-IGCT). The presented breaker topology is based on the parallel connection of low conduction loss RB-IGCTs which delivers efficiency as high as 99.9%. The focus of this article is on the power loop design and experimental validation of parallel connection of two and three RB-IGCTs with emphasis on current sharing during dynamic events such as short-circuits. A 3-D CAD-based design of power loop busbars was verified by several simulation test cases to represent dynamic current sharing under variations in RB-IGCT package impedances. An optimized busbar design approach and its tradeoffs are also discussed with simulation verification. The experimental results confirm that the parallel topology is able to perform current interruption during overload and short-circuit situations up to 10 kA for two devices in parallel and up to 14 kA for three devices in parallel - with current deviation from the mean as little as 6%.

The aim of the present study was to develop a radiomics nomogram to assess whether thyroid nodules (TNs) < 1 cm are benign or malignant. From March 2021 to March 2022, 156 patients were admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, and from September 2017 to March 2022, 116 patients were retrospectively collected from the Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. These patients were divided into a training group and an external test group. A radiomics nomogram was established using multivariate logistics regression analysis using the radiomics score and clinical data, including the ultrasound feature scoring terms from the thyroid imaging reporting and data system (TI-RADS). The radiomics nomogram incorporated the correlated predictors, and compared with the clinical model (training set AUC: 0.795; test set AUC: 0.783) and radiomics model (training set AUC: 0.774; test set AUC: 0.740), had better discrimination performance and correction effects in both the training set (AUC: 0.866) and the test set (AUC: 0.866). Both the decision curve analysis and clinical impact curve showed that the nomogram had a high clinical application value. The nomogram constructed based on TI-RADS and radiomics features had good results in predicting and distinguishing benign and malignant TNs < 1 cm.

The EW-trending Kuching zone in Borneo is a target region for exploring the southern continuation of Paleo-Pacific subduction from South China, Vietnam to SE Asia. Previous studies mainly focused on mafic igneous rocks, and poor attention has been paid to the contemporaneous granitoids in this zone. This study presented detailed zircon U-Pb geochronology and Lu-Hf isotope and whole-rock geochemistry analyses for late Cretaceous granitoids (granodiorites and granites) in the northern Kuching zone. These granitoids are dated at ~77.5-83.6 Ma with younger ages than the igneous rocks in the southern Kuching zone (~130-144 Ma). The granitoids have variable SiO2 (64.86-77.37 wt.%) and A/CNK (0.7-1.5) and are strongly enriched in LILE and depleted in HFSE with significant Ba, Nb, Sr, and Ti negative anomalies. They have variable (87Sr/86Sr)i (from 0.70656 to 0.71208), εNd(t) (from -4.4 to +0.9), and zircon εHf(t) (from -1.2 to +12.4) with high (206Pb/204Pb)i ratio of 18.78-19.74, suggesting derivation from a hybrid source involving meta-sedimentary and meta-igneous rocks. Combined with previously-published data, two episodes of Cretaceous (~77-98 Ma and ~130-144 Ma) magmatic activities are identified in the Kuching zone, showing a younging age trend from south to north. These episodes of Cretaceous igneous rocks and their spatial distribution in the Kuching zone can be totally comparable to those in South China and Vietnam. Thus, the Kuching zone was likely a part of the Paleo-Pacific subduction system during the Cretaceous, northerly linking to Vietnam and South China.

Opuntia milpa alta polysaccharides (ODP) are bioactive compounds extracted from Opuntia milpa alta and widely used in the treatment of diseases, but the therapeutic mechanism of ODP on inflammatory injury remains unclear. Therefore, this study explores the effects and mechanisms of ODP in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation of human keratinocytes (HaCaT). In this experiment, ODP was extracted via the water extraction and fermentation methods, respectively. LPS was then used to induce inflammatory damage in HaCaT cells, and the stimulated cells were treated with different concentrations of ODP. Cell viability was detected by MTT assay, and the concentrations of COX-2, iNOS, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Changes in inflammatory cytokines and related mRNA expression were observed to assess LPS-induced cell damage. In the experiment, it was found that the LPS stimulation of HaCaT cells can induce cellular inflammatory response, reduce cell viability, increase cell apoptosis and increase the expression of COX-2, iNOS, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α. However, the experimental data shows that ODP can reverse the above results by increasing cell viability, inhibiting cell apoptosis, reducing the expression of the above genes and inactivating antioxidant pathways, which revealed the specific mechanism of ODP repairing LPS-induced inflammatory damage to Hacat cell. In addition, The experimental results showed that fermentation could improve the anti-inflammatory effect of ODP. In conclusion, our experimental results indicate that ODP fermented by lactic acid bacteria can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) affects patients' lives and reduces their quality of life. Lactoferrin (LF) is a member of the transferrin family. We explore the expression level of LF in the peripheral blood of PTB patients and the clinical significance of LF in the diagnosis and course evaluation of PTB. Methods: Plasma LF concentration and neutrophil LF concentration were measured, and their correlation was analyzed, as well as their diagnostic validity and specificity for PTB. Results: Plasma LF concentration of active PTB patients was higher than that of stable PTB patients and patients in the control group. Neutrophil LF concentration of active PTB patients was higher than that of the control group, whereas it was reversed in stable PTB patients. However, there was no significant difference in the levels of neutrophil LF and plasma LF between primary and retreated PTB patients. There was a positive correlation between them, and the LF level was positively correlated with the TB replication load. Neutrophil LF had a higher specificity and sensitivity for diagnosing stable PTB, while plasma LF had higher specificity and sensitivity in the diagnosis of active PTB. Conclusions: Plasma LF has a higher sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of active PTB, and LF might be a biological indicator of PTB.

The southeastern (SE) South China Block was mainly influenced by the Paleo-Tethyan and Paleo-Pacific dynamic domains during the Mesozoic. The initial timing of the tectonic transition between these two domains in the SE South China Block still remains debated. The transition would affect the nature of the lithosphere and material provenance of sediments, and, therefore, igneous and sedimentary rocks in the area could record such dynamic processes. In this study, published geochronological and geochemical data of the Triassic and Jurassic igneous rocks and detrital zircon data of contemporaneous sedimentary rocks in the SE South China Block were compiled, aiming to provide constraints on the tectonic transition via tracing the spatial-temporal variations in the nature of the lithosphere and sedimentary provenance signals. The compiled results suggest that the magmatic intensity and volume decreased significantly from the Late Triassic to Early–Middle Jurassic, with an obvious magmatic quiescence between them, and increased from the Early–Middle Jurassic to Late Jurassic. The εNd(t) and zircon εHf(t) values of mafic rocks, granitoids, and shoshonitic rocks remarkably increased from the Late Triassic to Early–Middle Jurassic, indicative of variations in the lithospheric mantle and continental crust. Such variations suggest that the initial tectonic transition occurred at the earliest Early Jurassic. Based on the southward paleocurrents from Early Jurassic sandstone, E-W–trending extension of Early–Middle Jurassic mafic and shoshonitic rocks, and similar sedimentary provenances of Late Triassic and Early–Middle Jurassic sedimentary rocks, these features imply that the SE South China Block was not immediately influenced by the Paleo-Pacific domain during the Early–Middle Jurassic. However, from the Early–Middle Jurassic to Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, the spatial distribution, geochemical signatures, magmatic intensity, and magmatic volume of igneous rocks and provenance of sedimentary rocks exhibit obvious variations, and the regional fold hinge direction changed from E-W–trending to NE-trending, suggesting significant effects from Paleo-Pacific subduction on the SE South China Block. Thus, the Mesozoic tectonic transition from the Paleo-Tethyan to the Paleo-Pacific dynamic domain in the SE South China Block likely occurred during the Early–Middle Jurassic.

To deal with the problem of weak prediction and performance evaluation capabilities of traditional prediction and evaluation methods, a method of health state prediction and performance evaluation of belt conveyor based on Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) is proposed. First, the belt conveyor sensor monitoring data are preprocessed to obtain the feature data set with labels. At the same time, qualitative and quantitative analyses and interval discretization are carried out from belt conveyor fault-causing elements to construct the DBN network. Then, the sample data are applied to the DBN network for training, and the DBN-based prediction and performance evaluation model is established. Finally, taking the real-time monitoring data of a belt conveyor in an underground mine as an example, a DBN-based belt conveyor health prediction and evaluation model is constructed to evaluate and predict the health of the equipment. The results show that the model could identify different operating conditions and failure modes and further improves the prediction accuracy.

The Youjiang Basin is usually regarded as an important foreland basin in the southern part of the South China Block that is related to the convergence of the South China and Indochina blocks during the Permian-Triassic. However, the nature of the basin remains controversial due to questions about the subduction polarity and suture boundary between these two blocks. Permian-Triassic felsic volcanics across the Dian-Qiong and Song Ma suture zones could offer new insights into the convergent processes of the South China and Indochina blocks. This study presents detailed petrological, zircon U-Pb dating, and Hf-O isotope and whole-rock geochemical analyses for the Triassic felsic volcanics of the Youjiang Basin (northeast of the Dian-Qiong). The dacites and rhyolites from the Beisi and Baifeng Formations were dated at ca. 240–245 Ma. All of the felsic volcanics are characterized by high SiO2 (69.40–73.15 wt%), FeOt/MgO, 10000*Ga/Al, and TZr, δ18O (9.7–11.8‰) and negative εNd(t) (from −9.6 to −12.3) and zircon εHf(t) (from −6.2 to −14.5) with A-type granitoid geochemical affinities, suggesting the reworking of crustal rocks in an extensional setting. Permian-Triassic felsic igneous rocks display similar geochemical signatures across the Dian-Qiong suture zone, whereas they show distinctive Sr-Nd and zircon Hf-O isotopes across the Song Ma suture zone. The felsic igneous rocks to the northeast of the Song Ma suture zone have much lower εNd(t) and higher δ18O with negative zircon εHf(t) than those to the southwest, which have positive zircon εHf(t). Combined with other geological and geophysical features, it is inferred that the Song Ma suture zone was probably the suture boundary between the South China and Indochina blocks, and the Youjiang Basin was likely a peripheral foreland basin in response to the southwestward convergence of the South China Block toward the Indochina Block.

Deep neural networks are extremely vulnerable to attacks and threats from adversarial examples. These adversarial examples deliberately crafted by attackers can easily fool classification models by adding imperceptibly tiny perturbations on clean images. This brings a great challenge to image security for deep learning. Therefore, studying and designing attack algorithms for generating adversarial examples is essential for building robust models. Moreover, adversarial examples are transferable in that they can mislead multiple different classifiers across models. This makes black-box attacks feasible for practical applications. However, most attack methods have low success rates and weak transferability against black-box models. This is because they often overfit the model during the production of adversarial examples. To address this issue, we propose a Nadam iterative fast gradient method (NAI-FGM), which combines an improved Nadam optimizer with gradient-based iterative attacks. Specifically, we introduce the look-ahead momentum vector and the adaptive learning rate component based on the Momentum Iterative Fast Gradient Sign Method (MI-FGSM). The look-ahead momentum vector is dedicated to making the loss function converge faster and get rid of the poor local maximum. Additionally, the adaptive learning rate component is used to help the adversarial example to converge to a better extreme point by obtaining adaptive update directions according to the current parameters. Furthermore, we also carry out different input transformations to further enhance the attack performance before using NAI-FGM for attack. Finally, we consider attacking the ensemble model. Extensive experiments show that the NAI-FGM has stronger transferability and black-box attack capability than advanced momentum-based iterative attacks. In particular, when using the adversarial examples produced by way of ensemble attack to test the adversarially trained models, the NAI-FGM improves the success rate by 8% to 11% over the other attack methods. Last but not least, the NAI-DI-TI-SI-FGM combined with the input transformation achieves a success rate of 91.3% on average.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is home to the headwaters of major rivers in Asia, yet their water quality security on a large spatial scale is scarcely studied, especially in regard to emerging organic pollutants. In this study, a systematic field campaign was carried out along Yarlung Tsangpo River, Nu River, Lancang River and Jinsha River, and 13 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were analyzed. The total concentrations of PFAAs in the river waters of the TP were in the range of 0.58-7.46 ng/L, containing a high proportion of perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) with average values of 56.7 %. Elevated PFAA loadings were found for the midstream of Yarlung Tsangpo River in central Tibet. Geodetector results indicated that precipitation, solar radiation and vegetation type were the top three influential factors contributing to the observed spatial heterogeneity. When interactions with human activities were taken into account, the explanatory power was significantly enhanced and rose above 0.70, highlighting the increased risks for TP rivers from the combined effects of natural environments and anthropogenic activities. Risk assessments suggest a low risk is posed to the alpine aquatic ecosystems and human health. The discharge fluxes of PFAAs via riverine export were estimated at 94-425 kg/year, which is one to two orders of magnitude lower than their mass loadings in major rivers worldwide. Our study underlined the need for further attention to the increased risk of water resource quality on the central TP in the context of long-range transport, increased cryosphere melting and local emission.

Glacier-fed lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) have undergone rapid expansions since the late 1990s, concurrent with the changing climate. However, the dominant cause(s) of lake area increases is still debated. To identify the drivers of lake expansion, we studied Aweng Co, a glacier-fed lake in the western TP, where surface area has increased (0.74 km2 year−1) since the late 1970s and most rapidly (0.998 km2 year−1) since the late 1990s. A water balance model was used to clarify the reasons for increased lake water volume, supported by stable isotope hydrology and the δ18O change recorded in recent sediments. Results showed that glacial meltwater probably had the biggest impact on changes in Aweng Co lake level in recent decades, but that precipitation was also an important contributor. Our study shows that δ18O of carbonate (δ18Ocarb) has great potential for indicating source changes of water supply in such lakes, but there is a need to be cautious when interpreting δ18Ocarb due to the influence of multiple hydrological factors, which can change in dominance over time.

Background Southern China is at risk for arborvirus disease transmission, including Zika virus and dengue. Patients often present to clinical care with non-specific acute febrile illnesses (AFI). To better describe the etiology of AFI, we implemented a two-year AFI surveillance project at five sentinel hospitals in Yunnan and Guangdong Provinces. Methods Between June 2017 and August 2019, we enrolled patients between 2 and 65 years of age presenting at one sentinel hospital in Mengla County, Yunnan, and four in Jiangmen City, Guangdong, with symptoms of AFI (acute onset of fever ≥ 37.5°C within the past 7 days) without respiratory symptoms or diarrhea. Demographic, epidemiologic, and clinical information was obtained and entered into a web-based AFI surveillance database. A custom TaqMan Array card (TAC) was used to test patients’ whole blood specimens for 27 different pathogens using real-time polymerase chain reaction assays. Results During the two-year project period, 836 patients were enrolled; 443 patients from Mengla County and 393 patients from Jiangmen City. The median age was 33 years [range: 2–65], and most were hospitalized [641, 77%]. Of 796 patients with valid TAC results, 341 (43%) were positive for at least one of the 10 unique pathogens detected. This included 205 (26%) patients positive for dengue virus, 60 (8%) for Orientia tsutsugamushi, and 42 (5%) for Coxiella burnetii. Ten patients (1%) in Jiangmen City tested positive for malaria, 8 of whom reported recent travel outside of China. TAC results were negative for 455 (57%) patients. None of the patients had a positive TAC detection for Zika virus. Conclusions The project detected variability in the etiology of AFI in Southern China and highlighted the importance of differential diagnosis. Dengue, O. tsutsugamushi, and C. burnetii were the most frequently identified pathogens among enrolled AFI patients. As a non-notifiable disease, the frequent detection of C. burnetii is noteworthy and warrants additional investigation. The project provided a framework for routine surveillance for persons presenting with AFI.
