Emissions of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from building materials may result in poor indoor air quality. The emission process can be divided into three stages over time: early, transition, and equilibrium stages. In existing studies, mass transfer models without distinguishing the early and transition stages have been widely used for characterizing the formaldehyde/VOC emissions, with three key parameters involved in these models. Many methods have been proposed for determining these parameters by fitting the corresponding models to experimental data. However, multiple groups of best-fit parameters might coexist if experimental data are obtained at the early stage (to shorten the experimental time). Therefore, we developed a novel mass transfer model to describe the early-stage emissions by assuming the building material as semi-infinite medium. The novel model indicated that the early-stage emission was governed by only two parameters, instead of three parameters, which explained the reason for the multi-solution problem of existing methods. Subsequently, the application condition of the early-stage model was clarified, showing that the early stage was very common in the emissions of formaldehyde/VOCs. Finally, a novel approach for characterizing the emissions of formaldehyde/VOCs from building materials was proposed to eliminate the negative effects of the multi-solution problem.

3. Student close contact behavior and COVID-19 transmission in China's classrooms

- Abstract
Classrooms are high-risk indoor environments, so analysis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission in classrooms is important for determining optimal interventions. Due to the absence of human behavior data, it is challenging to accurately determine virus exposure in classrooms. A wearable device for close contact behavior detection was developed, and we recorded >250,000 data points of close contact behaviors of students from grades 1 to 12. Combined with a survey on students' behaviors, we analyzed virus transmission in classrooms. Close contact rates for students were 37 ± 11% during classes and 48 ± 13% during breaks. Students in lower grades had higher close contact rates and virus transmission potential. The long-range airborne transmission route is dominant, accounting for 90 ± 3.6% and 75 ± 7.7% with and without mask wearing, respectively. During breaks, the short-range airborne route became more important, contributing 48 ± 3.1% in grades 1 to 9 (without wearing masks). Ventilation alone cannot always meet the demands of COVID-19 control; 30 m3/h/person is suggested as the threshold outdoor air ventilation rate in a classroom. This study provides scientific support for COVID-19 prevention and control in classrooms, and our proposed human behavior detection and analysis methods offer a powerful tool to understand virus transmission characteristics and can be employed in various indoor environments.

7. Effect of youthful blood environment and its key factor SCF on renal interstitial fibrosis in elderly mice

Introduction: Youthful blood environment was shown to decelerate the aging process of kidney and to attenuate senile renal fibrosis in a young-old parabiotic animal model; in addition, we identified a stem cell factor (SCF) that is closely linked with the process. This research was to investigate the effect of youthful blood environment on senile renal interstitial fibrosis and the role of SCF. Methods: We bred SCF receptor c-Kit gene loss-of-function Wps/Wps mice and established a combination mice model that was subjected to unilateral ureteral obstructive (UUO) and parabiotic surgeries. Parabiotic mice were divided into isochronic parabiotic (young-young, Y-IP and old-old, O-IP) and heterochronic parabiotic (young-old, HP) groups. UUO surgery was performed in one of the parabiotic pairs in the IP group (Y-IPuuo and O-IPuuo) and in the elderly mice in the HP group (O-HPuuo). In order to study the role of SCF/c-kit on renal interstitial fibrosis, UUO surgery was performed in wildtype (WT) and Wps/Wps mice. Results: Fourteen days after UUO surgery, the kidney interstitial fibrosis area, kidney function, and the expressions of SCF/c-Kit, pNF-κB, and fibrosis-related proteins in the O-HPuuo group were significantly lower than those in the Ouuo and O-IPuuo groups. Compared with wildtype UUO mice, the expressions of pNF-κB and fibrosis-related proteins, and the kidney function were all significantly decreased in Wps/Wps UUO mice. Conclusion: Youthful blood environment downregulated the expressions of SCF/c-Kit in elderly UUO mice, and ameliorated UUO-induced kidney fibrosis and function loss.

The last two decades have witnessed rapid urbanization and economic growth accompanied by severe indoor air pollution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in China. However, indoor VOC pollution across China has not been well characterized and documented. This study is a systematic review of field measurements of eight target VOCs (benzene, toluene, xylenes, acetaldehyde, p-dichlorobenzene, butadiene, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene) in residences, offices, and schools in China from 2000 to 2021. The results show that indoor pollution of benzene, toluene, and xylenes has been more serious in China than in other countries. Spatiotemporal distribution shows lower indoor VOC levels in east and south-east regions and a declining trend from 2000 to 2021. Moving into a dwelling more than 1 year after decoration and improving ventilation could significantly reduce exposure to indoor VOCs. In this paper, a three-dimensional non-isothermal computational model for predicting indoor SVOC distribution is proposed, considering the effects of turbulence diffusion and suspended particles. The realizable k-e model is introduced for turbulent flow simulation in a room. The Euler-Euler method is adopted to deal with the gas-particle two-phase flow coupled problem. Inertia slip velocity and irreversible first-order absorption boundary are employed for more accurate prediction of particle motion. The simulated curve of outlet gas-phase di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) concentration with emission time is verified by available experimental data. The emission process of DEHP in a 15 m2 room in Beijing during 100 days with or without air cleaner is simulated by the developed model considering air leak through window and door gaps. It is found that if the air cleaner keeps on all the time during 100 days the gas-phase DEHP concentration in the room will tend to be uniform, while the emission process is far from equilibrium without an air cleaner even the emission lasts 100 days. Results also suggest that floor heating, decrease of particle concentration, weaken of heat transfer, enhancement of mass transfer, and air infiltration in window gap contribute to decrease DEHP concentration.

19. V-Shaped Toothed Roller Cotton Stalk Puller: Numerical Modeling and Field-Test Validation

The V-shaped toothed roller cotton stalk puller has a low removal ratio and weak pulling effect. Hence, we constructed a simplified mathematical model of the V-shaped tooth roller stalk puller based on elastic collision theory and simple beam theory and conducted a mechanical analysis based on this model to explore the causes of pulling errors and fractures. Specifically, the V-shaped tooth plates of the machine were optimized in an orthogonal experiment with the rotational speed, cogging angle, and ground clearance as the influencing factors, and the removal ratio as the evaluation index. This experiment was designed to enable analysis of the physical characteristics of cotton stalks, and the forces applied during the pulling process. Additionally, a V-shaped toothed roller-type stalk-pulling test bench was constructed. The results revealed that, unlike the cogging angle, the ground clearance significantly affected the removal ratio. Furthermore, the highest removal ratio (i.e., 97%) was achieved when the ground clearance was −20 mm, the rotational speed was 300 rpm, and the cogging angle was 32.5°. An L9 (34) orthogonal field experiment was also conducted with the rotational speed, cogging angle, and ground clearance as the influencing factors to investigate their respective influences on the stalk removal ratio. The results revealed that the ground clearance most significantly influenced the ratio, followed by the rotational speed, and cogging angle. The ground clearance and rotational speed of the V-shaped toothed roller were each found to significantly influence the ratio. Furthermore, a ground clearance of −20 mm, rotational speed of 300 r/min, and cogging angle of 25° yielded an average removal ratio of 98.27%. Through this research, the mechanism of toothed roller stalk pulling is further deepened and the toothed series stalk pulling technology provides theoretical support.

Concerns on nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) in the environment have mainly arisen from their mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. The objective of this study is to investigate whether nitro-PAH exposures are associated with biomarkers of cardiovascular pathophysiology. In a panel study design, urines and blood samples were collected up to four times with a 2-week interval from 89 healthy adults. We measured 1-naphthylamine, 2-naphthylamine, 9-aminophenanthrene, 2-aminofluorene, and 1-aminopyrene as biomarkers of nitro-PAH exposures. We measured three urinary metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA) including 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) from the cytochrome P450 (CYP) pathway, 8-isoprostane from the nonenzymatic pathway, and 11-dehydro-thromboxane B2 (11-dhTXB2) from the cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway. Urinary malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) were measured to reflect systemic oxidative stress. Plasma concentrations of the soluble P-selectin and von Willebrand factor (vWF) were measured as biomarkers of platelet activation and endothelial dysfunction. We found that increased urinary concentrations of amino-PAHs were significantly associated with increased 20-HETE, 11-dhTXB2, and 8-OHdG and with decreased 8-isoprostane and aMT6s. Increased amino-PAHs were positively associated with P-selectin and vWF, respectively. These results suggest that exposure to nitro-PAHs increases systemic oxidative stress and alters AA metabolism toward CYP and COX pathways, leading to an increased cardiovascular disease risk.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with a higher oxidative potential has been thought to be more detrimental to pulmonary health. We aim to investigate the associations between personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential and pulmonary outcomes in asthmatic children. We measured each of the 43 asthmatic children 4 times for airway mechanics, lung function, airway inflammation, and asthma symptom scores. Coupling measured indoor and outdoor concentrations of PM2.5 mass, constituents, and oxidative potential with individual time-activity data, we calculated 24 h average personal exposures 0-3 days prior to a health outcome measurement. We found that increases in daily personal exposure to PM2.5 oxidative potential were significantly associated with increased small, large, and total airway resistance, increased airway impedance, decreased lung function, and worsened scores of individual asthma symptoms and the total symptom score. Among the PM2.5 constituents, organic matters largely of indoor origin contributed the greatest to PM2.5 oxidative potential. Given that the variability in PM2.5 oxidative potential was a stronger driver than PM2.5 mass for the variability in the respiratory health outcomes, it is suggested to reduce PM2.5 oxidative potential, particularly by reducing the organic matter constituent of indoor PM2.5, as a targeted source control strategy in asthma management.

Introduction: Autophagy plays pivotal role in various tumors, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Microsatellite instability (MSI) and KRAS mutations are also involved in response to the adjuvant therapy of CRC. We aimed to investigate the relationships among autophagy, KRAS mutations, MSI, clinicopathological parameters, and prognosis in CRC patients. Methods and Results: We tested 200 CRC tumors for autophagy-related protein expression (Beclin 1 and LC3), MSI status, and KRAS mutations. Results: Expression of Beclin 1 and LC3 was higher in CRC, with Beclin 1 significantly correlating with the depth of invasion, whereas LC3 was not associated with clinicopathological parameters. Patients expressing the LC3 proteins experienced a shorter overall survival (OS) after surgery with adjuvant therapy, especially in the MSS/L-CRC subgroup and the mutated KRAS subgroup. MSS/L-CRC patients with KRAS mutations positively expressed the LC3 protein and suffered a shorter OS than LC3 non-expressing patients. In CRC patients who received either capecitabine or capecitabine combined with oxaliplatin post-surgery, the positive expression of LC3 correlated with worse OS compared to patients who did not express LC3. Sequencing showed BRCA1/2 as the most variant genes in all patients. Nevertheless, deleterious variations were more frequent in patients with MSI-H CRC. Conclusions: High LC3 protein expression shows a certain prognostic value in CRC patients. LC3, the MSI status, and KRAS mutations must be considered when selecting an adjuvant therapy for CRC. The detection of these indexes is of great significance to identify high-risk patients who would benefit from autophagy-related anticancer drugs or help to explore more effective treatment options for patients who are resistant to conventional chemotherapy or relapse.

26. Effect of prenatal and postnatal exposure to home renovation on the risk of common cold in preschool children

Common cold is usually considered to be associated with outdoor climate, but the evidence linking with indoor environmental factors is lacking. The role of indoor renovations during which critical timing window on childhood common cold remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effect of exposure to new furniture and/or redecoration during prenatal and postnatal periods on the occurrence and duration of common cold in preschool children. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 39 782 children aged 3-6 years in seven cities of China. The occurrence and duration of common cold in children, and their lifetime exposures to indoor new furniture and redecoration (including pregnancy, the first year of life, and after one year old) were assessed using a questionnaire administered by the parents. Associations between high frequency (5 colds) and long duration (≥2 weeks per cold) of common cold during past 12 months and exposure to indoor new furniture/redecoration were examined by logistic regression models in terms of odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). We found that the prevalence of high frequency and long duration of common cold in preschool children in China were, respectively, 9.2% and 11.9%. Frequent common cold was significantly associated with exposure to indoor new furniture/redecoration during pregnancy, first year, and after 1 year old, respectively, with the ORs (95% CI) = 1.25 (1.12-1.39), 1.11 (1.00-1.25), and 1.09 (1.01-1.18). Furthermore, childhood long duration per cold was associated with exposure to indoor new furniture/redecoration during pregnancy with OR (95% CI) of 1.14 (1.03-1.25) but not with postnatal exposure. We identified that prenatal exposure to home renovation was more critical than postnatal exposure for an increased risk of high frequency and long duration of common cold. Sensitivity analysis showed that the association between prenatal exposure to indoor renovations and the risk of childhood common cold was consistent and robust, and the associations were modified by some personal and indoor environmental factors. Our findings indicated that prenatal and postnatal exposure to home renovation played an important role in the risk of childhood common cold, supporting the hypothesis of "fetal origin of childhood infection."

Exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) indoors is thought to be associated with several adverse health effects. However, we still lack concentration-response (C-R) relationships between VOC levels in civil buildings and various health outcomes. For this paper, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to summarize related associations and C-R relationships. Four databases were searched to collect all relevant studies published between January 1980 and December 2017. A total of 39 studies were identified in the systematic review, and 32 of these were included in the meta-analysis. We propose, to the best of our knowledge, a novel kind of tunable liquid crystal core refractive index (RI) sensor based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) covered with a nanoring gold film. The finite element method is used to discuss and analyze the sensing performance of the RI sensor. Gold is used as the excitation material for surface plasmon resonance, and a gold nanoring is embedded around the first cladding of the PCF. The liquid analytes penetrate the outermost layer of the cladding, and the central hole is filled with liquid crystal E7. Complete coupling and incomplete coupling are excited as the analyte RI increases, and the resonance strength of complete coupling is stronger than that of incomplete coupling. It can be proved by calculation that at different wavelengths, resonant coupling of fifth-order and sixth-order surface plasmon polaritons is obtained. The RI of liquid analytes ranges from 1.405 to 1.445. The diameters of the liquid crystal cores are 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 µm; their average sensitivities are 10700, 10566, 10167, and 9166 nm/RIU; and the linear fitting constants are 0.98025, 0.97387, 0.96597, and 0.95507, respectively. In short, the RI sensor has the advantages of tunability, wide range, and high sensitivity, and is expected to be applied in various fields.

Most existing models and standards for volatile organic compounds emission assume that contaminants are uniform in the testing devices. In this study, a three-dimensional transient numerical model was proposed to simulate the mass transport process based on a full-scale test chamber with a mixing fan, and the airflow field and contaminants concentration distribution were obtained within the chamber under airtight and ventilated conditions. The model was validated by comparing the numerical results with experimental data. The numerical results show that the contaminant source position and the airflow field characteristics have significant impact on the contaminant mixing, and the fan rotation has an important role in accelerating mixing. In the initial mixing stage, the concentration distribution is obviously uneven; as the mixing progresses, it gradually reaches acceptable uniformity except for some sensitive regions, such as high concentration region at the injection point of the contaminants and low concentration region at the air inlet. To ensure test accuracy, the monitor should avoid above sensitive regions; and some special regions are recommended where contaminant concentration uniformity can be reached sooner. The ventilated chamber results indicate that the mixture of contaminants in the chamber is actually better than the results shown by conventional test method.

Background In highly polluted urban areas, personal exposure to PM2.5 and O3 occur daily in various microenvironments. Identifying which microenvironments contribute most to exposure can pinpoint effective exposure reduction strategies and mitigate adverse health impacts. Methods This work uses real-time sensors to assess the exposures of children with asthma (N = 39) in Shanghai, quantifying microenvironmental exposure to PM2.5 and O3. An air cleaner was deployed in participants' bedrooms where we hypothesized exposure could be most efficiently reduced. Monitoring occurred for two 48-h periods: one with bedroom filtration (portable air cleaner with HEPA and activated carbon filters) and the other without. Results Children spent 91% of their time indoors with the majority spent in their bedroom (47%). Without filtration, the bedroom and classroom environments were the largest contributors to PM2.5 exposure. With filtration, bedroom PM2.5 exposure was reduced by 75% (45% of total exposure). Although filtration status did not impact O3, the largest contribution of O3 exposure also came from the bedroom. Conclusions Actions taken to reduce bedroom PM2.5 and O3 concentrations can most efficiently reduce total exposure. As real-time pollutant monitors become more accessible, similar analyses can be used to evaluate new interventions and optimize exposure reductions for a variety of populations.

Negative ion air purifiers (NIAPs), as a less costly alternative to the HEPA filtration, have been increasingly deployed in China and potentially elsewhere. While reducing indoor concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5 ), NIAPs generate massive amounts of negative ions that may be of health concern. We performed week-long interventions with NIAPs in the dormitories of 56 healthy college students living in Beijing. In a randomized order, each student underwent a true and a sham NIAP session. Cardiorespiratory outcomes were measured before and after each session. The use of true NIAPs reduced indoor PM2.5 concentrations significantly, while notably increased negative ion levels. Increases in PM2.5 and negative ion (NI) exposure were independently associated with increased urinary concentration of malondialdehyde, a biomarker of systemic oxidative stress, resulting in a null net effect of NIAP on malondialdehyde. Likewise, no significant net effects of NIAPs were observed for other outcomes indicative of lung function, vascular tone, arterial stiffness, and inflammation. Our findings suggest that negative ions, possibly along with their reaction products with the room air constituents, adversely affect health. The downsides do not support the use of NIAPs as a health-based mitigation strategy to reduce PM2.5 exposure, especially in residences with PM2.5 concentrations that are not extremely high.

Portable air cleaners are increasingly used in polluted areas in an attempt to reduce human exposure; however, there has been limited work characterizing their effectiveness at reducing exposure. With this in mind, we recruited forty-three children with asthma from suburban Shanghai and deployed air cleaners (with HEPA and activated carbon filters) in their bedrooms. During both 2-week filtration and non-filtration periods, low-cost PM2.5 and O3 air monitors were used to measure pollutants indoors, outdoors, and for personal exposure. Indoor PM2.5 concentrations were reduced substantially with the use of air cleaners, from 34 ± 17 to 10 ± 8 µg/m3 , with roughly 80% of indoor PM2.5 estimated to come from outdoor sources. Personal exposure to PM2.5 was reduced from 40 ± 17 to 25 ± 14 µg/m3 . The more modest reductions in personal exposure and high contribution of outdoor PM2.5 to indoor concentrations highlight the need to reduce outdoor PM2.5 and/or to clean indoor air in multiple locations. Indoor O3 concentrations were generally low (mean = 8±4 ppb), and no significant difference was seen by filtration status. The concentrations of pollutants and the air cleaner effectiveness were highly variable over time and across homes, highlighting the usefulness of real-time air monitors for understanding individual exposure reduction strategies.

In central heating systems, heat is often transferred from heat source to users by the heat network where several heat exchangers are installed at the heat source, substations, and terminals. In this article, the mathematical optimization model of the cascade heat exchange network with three-stage heat exchangers in a series is established. The aim is to maximize the cold fluid temperature for a given hot fluid temperature and overall heating capacity, the optimal heat exchange area distribution, and the medium fluid flow rates are determined through an inverse problem and variation method. The results show that the heat exchange areas should be distributed equally for each heat exchanger. It also indicates that in order to improve the thermal performance of the whole system, more heat exchange areas should be allocated to the heat exchanger where flow rate difference between two fluids is relatively small.

During 2010-2012, we surveyed 40,010 3- to 6-year-old children in seven Chinese cities (Beijing, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Shanghai, Nanjing, Changsha, and Chongqing). Their parents reported information on household renovation, including the timing of renovation and the choice of materials for walls and floors in the child's room, and the incidence of their child's rhinitis. Multivariate and two-level (city-child) logistic regression analyses yielding adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals were performed. Sensitivity analyses stratifying data for location and economic level were also performed. About 48.0% of the children had ever had allergic rhinitis, 41.2% had current allergic rhinitis, and 9.0% had had doctor-diagnosed rhinitis. Exposure to household renovation during early lifetime (birth to 1-year-old) had an AOR of 1.43 (1.04-1.9) for allergic rhinitis. The incidence of allergic rhinitis was significantly different in children exposed to different floor and wall covering materials. Floor or wall covering material composed of organic materials significantly increased the risk of childhood allergic rhinitis compared with tile flooring or lime wall covering. Oil paint had an AOR of 1.66 (1.28-2.14) for diagnosed rhinitis compared with lime wall covering. Adding new furniture the year before pregnancy was associated with an AOR of 1.18 (1.10-1.27) and 1.18 (1.11-1.25) for lifetime and current rhinitis. Solid wood or tiles/ceramic as floor materials, and using wallpaper, oil paint, or emulsion panels as wall materials were risk factors for doctor-diagnosed rhinitis. Sensitivity analyses showed that children living in southern or higher economic level China cities were more likely to have allergic rhinitis with household renovation.

Healthy building is a new trend after green buildings in the world. “WELL” was launched as the first guideline for healthy buildings in 2014 in USA. In 2017, China Healthy Building Assessment Standard was launched. Good indoor air quality is an important part for healthy buildings. The score of indoor air quality accounts for nearly 25 in the total score (100) in Healthy Building Assessment Standard (T/ASC 02-2016). The indoor air quality items in the standards are mainly based upon China Indoor Air Quality Standard (GB/T 18883-2001). However, the target indoor air pollutants in the both standards (T/ASC 02-2016 and GB/T 18883-2001) are not determined based upon the indoor air quality investigations in China. In order to revise the China Indoor Air Quality Standard (GB/T 18883-2001) and improve or develop the relevant indoor air quality control techniques, it’s necessary to know the important and unsolved problems in indoor air quality control in China. From them, the important scientific problems and key technical problems in China can be identified, and the gaps between the control demands and the levels of the related industries in China can be recognized. Then, various control approaches and strategies can be developed effectively. For this purpose, we present a series of important and unsolved problems in indoor air quality control in China: Identify the target indoor air pollutants and the corresponding thresholds based upon China’s indoor air quality situations, develop energy efficient engineering approaches to simultaneously control indoor air climate and quality, and develop the approach of scientific evaluation for indoor air quality control effect. The important scientific and key technical problems behind them are: The method of determining the target indoor air pollutants, the method of determining the thresholds of the target indoor air pollutants, the principle and method to overall control of indoor air climate and quality, the method of scientific evaluation for indoor air quality control effect not only based upon the concentrations of the target indoor air pollutants but also based upon the human health response. We are carrying out a national research project whose title is “study on fundamental problems and key technical approaches in indoor air quality control”. Based upon its research advance, we put forward a framework and understanding of solving the aforementioned problems: (1) Determining the target indoor air pollutants based upon the burden of diseases of indoor air pollutants in China. In the study, the burden of diseases of all target indoor air pollutants is obtained so that the overall burden of diseases of indoor air pollution can be roughly estimated. It’s a quantitative index to show the importance of indoor air quality problems in China. (2) Determining the corresponding thresholds of the indoor air pollutants based upon the control feasibility and the health benefit. The healthy benefit can be evaluated by the reduction of burden of diseases of the target indoor air pollutants which can also be equivalent as the reduction of economic loss. (3) Developing inverse problem and variation method to identify the optimal control systems and operative strategies. It’s an original novel approach for indoor air quality control. (4) Developing some partial space and/or partial time control approaches for indoor air quality. (5) Developing novel evaluation method for control effect by using biomarker-based techniques. (6) Narrowing or even removing the gaps between the indoor air quality control related industries. The indoor air quality control standards in those industries shouldn’t conflict each other. (7) Applying various newly-developed sensors and big data techniques to understand the links between the indoor air quality and human health response. New on-line monitoring sensors with acceptable precision, together with some new big-data analysis methods are strongly needed. To tackling the above problems which are related to many disciplines, collaboration among multi-disciplinary research and industries is very important.

Residents of polluted cities frequently use indoor air purifiers in an attempt to improve their health by reducing their exposure to air pollutants, despite the fact that few studies have assessed these devices under relevant field conditions. Low-cost air monitors are increasingly popular for monitoring air pollution exposure; however, they must be calibrated and evaluated in their deployment location first to ensure measurement accuracy and precision. In this study, we developed a 2-step calibration method in which a low-cost monitor is calibrated against a reference analyzer and is then used to calibrate other monitors, shortening the required calibration time and reducing measurement error. The monitors in our experiment measured indoor, outdoor, and personal exposure PM2.5 concentrations during 1 week each of true and sham filtration in 7 homes in Beijing, China. On average, filtration reduced the indoor and personal exposure relevant concentrations by 72% (std. err. = 7%) and 28% (std. err. = 5%), respectively. This study indicates that minimizing personal exposure, however, also requires reducing the infiltration of outdoor air in homes or decreasing PM2.5 pollution at the city or country level.

Urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) are commonly used biomarkers of oxidative stress. However, their associations with air pollutant exposure have not been consistent across studies. We hypothesize that the inconsistency is partly due to confounding of circulating melatonin. We analyzed urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), a surrogate of circulating melatonin, along with 8-OHdG and MDA, in 159 healthy adults who had not taken melatonin supplementation. Within the natural range of endogenously-generated aMT6s (0.3–93.5 ng/mg creatinine) measured in this study, increasing aMT6s levels were significantly associated with increasing concentrations of 8-OHdG and MDA. Measurements of PM2.5, ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), coupled with time-activity data, were used to calculate time-averaged personal exposures 12 -hour (12h) and 24-hour (24h) prior to urine collection. Without controlling for aMT6s, the relationships between pollutant exposure and 8-OHdG or MDA were not clear. After controlling for aMT6s, an interquartile range (IQR) increase in 12h PM2.5 and 12h NO2 exposure was associated with 6.1% [95%CI: 1.6%–10.8%] and 8.6% [1.3%–16.5%] increase in MDA, respectively. An IQR increase in 12h O3 exposure was associated with a 5.7% [1.9%–9.7%] in 8-OHdG. The findings suggest the need for controlling for aMT6s as a confounder in using urinary 8-OHdG and MDA as biomarkers of oxidative stress related to short-term air pollution exposure.

China's profoundly rapid modernization in the past two decades has resulted in dramatic changes in indoor environmental exposures. Among these changes, exposure to phthalates has attracted increasing attention. We aimed to characterize indoor phthalate exposure and to estimate the disease burden attributable to indoor phthalate pollution from 2000 to 2017 in China. We integrated the national exposure level of indoor phthalates from literature through systematic review and Monte Carlo simulation. Dose-response relationships between phthalate exposure and health outcomes were obtained by systematic review and meta-analysis. Based on existing models for assessing probabilities of causation and a comprehensive review of available data, we calculated the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) among the general Chinese population resulting from exposure to indoor phthalate pollution. We found that DnBP, DiBP, and DEHP were the most abundant phthalates in indoor environments of residences, offices, and schools with medians of national dust phase concentration from 74.5 µg/g to 96.3 µg/g, 39.6 µg/g to 162.5 µg/g, 634.2 µg/g to 1,394.7 µg/g, respectively. The national equivalent exposure for children to phthalates in settled dust was higher than that of adults except for DiBP and DnOP. Dose-response relationships associated with DEP, DiBP, DnBP, BBzP, and DEHP exposures were established. Between 2000 and 2017, indoor phthalate exposure in China has led to 3.32 million DALYs per year, accounting for 0.90% of total DALYs across China. The annual DALY associated with indoor phthalate pollution in China was over 2000 people per million, which is about 2~3 times of the DALY loss due to secondhand smoke (SHS) in six European countries or the sum of the DALY loss caused by indoor radon and formaldehyde in American homes. Our study indicates a considerable socioeconomic impact of indoor phthalate exposure for a modernizing human society. This suggest the need for relevant national standard and actions to reduce indoor phthalate exposure.

40. High sensitivity liquid analyte filled photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor covered by symmetrical metalnano-films based on surface plasmon resonance

- Abstract
A high sensitivity of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a tunableliquid core refractive index sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) induced bythe symmetric metal films is proposed in this paper. The SPR excitation materials are chose as gold and silver. The transmission characteristics and sensing performance of the SPR-PCF sensor with different geometrical parameters were analyzed by using finite element method (FEM) and Maxwell equation. The final results show that when thediameter of the central hole is 1.6µm and the thickness of the gold film is 40nm, the SPR occurs at the wavelength of 1400nm, and the confinement loss can reach 17398dB/m. The average sensitivity of the SPR-PCFsensor can reach 7200nm/RIU, and the linear fitting constant is R2=0.99959, which is expected to have important applications in the direction of liquid refractive index detection.

42. Non-targeted screening of volatile organic compounds in a museum in China Using GC-Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Non-targeted analysis (NTA) was used in identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a museum in China with the gas chromatograph (GC)-Orbitrap-mass spectrometer (MS). Approximately 230 VOCs were detected, of which 117 were observed at 100% frequency across all sampling sites. Although some were common in indoor environments, most of the detected VOCs were rarely reported in previous studies on museum environments. Some of the detected VOCs were found to be associated with the materials used in furnishings and the chemicals applied in conservation treatment. Spearman's correlation analysis showed that several classes of VOCs were well correlated, suggesting their common sources. Compared with compounds in outdoor air, indoor VOCs had a lower level of unsaturation and more portions of chemically reduced compounds. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were performed. The results suggested that the sampling adsorbents chosen may have a large impact and that a single type of adsorbent may not be sufficient to cover a wide range of compounds in NTA studies. The MonoTrap adsorbent containing octadecylsilane (ODS) and activated carbon (AC) is suitable for aliphatic polar compounds that contain low levels of oxygen, whereas the MonoTrap ODS and silica gel are good at sampling aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons with limited polarity. Principle component analysis (PCA) showed that the indoor VOCs changed significantly at different times in the museum; this may have been caused by the removal of artifacts and refurbishment of the gallery between sampling events. A comparison with compounds identified by chamber emission tests showed that decorative materials may have been one of the main sources of indoor VOCs in the museum. The VOCs identified in the present study are likely to be present in other similar museums; therefore, further examination may be warranted of their potential impacts on cultural heritage artifacts, museum personnel, and visitors.
