This study aim to investigate the biodegradation of all alkanes in soil by adding stimulater and indigenous bacteria. The experiments were carried out by adding native bacteria and the stimulater to the soil S1 (total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) = 22,745 mg/kg) and soil S2 (TPH = 13,833 mg/kg) to explored the effect and mechanism of the stimulated biodegradation of all alkanes in soil. The results showed that most alkanes were used as the main carbon source of TPH in the late stimulation stage, so that all alkanes could be biodegraded by stimulating. The biodegradation of C10 - C19 (4527 mg/kg) and C20 - C30 (8530 mg/kg) were much higher than the stimulated biodegradation of partial alkanes, which indicated that the biodegradation effect of TPH was greatly improved. In addition, for the stimulated biodegradation of all alkanes group, the relative activity of TPH (TPH biodegradation/DOC consumption) was nearly 5 times that of the stimulated biodegradation of partial alkanes group in the late stimulation stage. The amount of ammonia allocated to TPH in the late stimulation stage was nearly 10 times that of DOC, and the organic matter components changed greatly in the early stimulation stage, but there was basically no change in the later stage. It showed that the hydrocarbon degraders in the stimulated biodegradation of all alkanes group used DOC as the main carbon source in the early stimulation stage and mainly degrade TPH in the later stage, which improved the biodegradation efficiency of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Flip buckets are commonly used to discharge flow away from a hydraulic structure into the downstream to dissipate energy. A new leak-floor flip bucket is presented, making the ski-jump water jet a typical long-narrow nappe. Based on the model experiments and numerical simulation, the flow pattern, formation process and mechanism of the leak-floor flip bucket are studied. The results show that cross section flow shape develops from the "Y-type" to "|-type", and this is because the natural pressure difference is generated when water flows through the leak-floor area and moves transversely from both sides to the center. Different from the slit-type flip bucket with sidewall contraction, the leak-floor flit bucket makes the water jet narrow and long without high pressure on the side walls of the flip bucket. Under the same jet length condition, the maximum sidewall pressure of the slit-type is 4.67 times that of the leak-floor flip bucket. The effects of flow discharge on the jet length are less significant for the leak-floor bucket than for the slit-type bucket.

The reactive nitrogen (N) loss of the rice cropping system in the arid region shows a different pattern from that of subtropical humid region due to different climate types and crop management. However, little attention has been paid to this region. To fill this knowledge gap, a two-year (2009–2010) field observation was conducted in the Ningxia irrigation region, northwest China, to explore the major pathway of N loss following local farmers' optimal practice. Further, we determined the site-specific emission factors of ammonia and nitrous oxide, rate of surface runoff and subsurface (leaching and seepage) to improve the inventory resolution of arid irrigation region. Results showed that ammonia volatilization (45%–49% of total N loss), leaching and seepage (30%–33% of total N loss) were proved to be the primary factors of N loss in rice paddy fields. The emission factor of ammonia (21%) and N leaching rate (7.5%) following farmers' practice were 2.1 and 5.4 times higher than the country-specific default value in China. The country-specific N runoff rate and emission factor of N2O could be directly adopted in this region. A 20% reduction of N fertilizer to farmers’ practice (300 kg N ha−1) alongside the application of organic fertilizer (30% N in synthetic fertilizer was substituted by pig manure) were considered to be the optimal N rate in this region. Our study can narrow the gap between researches on N loss in arid regions and subtropical humid regions. Meanwhile, the results can provide specific advice on N loss mitigation for policy makers in arid irrigation regions.
