Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) were utilized for rapid and simultaneous assessment of the lipid oxidation indices in French fries. The conventional indexes (i.e. total polar compounds, oxidized triacylglycerol polymerized products, oxidation products, and triacylglycerol hydrolysis products, acid values and peroxide values), and FTIR absorbance intensity in French fries were determined during deep-frying process, and the results showed the French fries had better quality in palm oil, followed by sunflower oil, rapeseed oil and soybean oil. The FTIR spectra of oil extracted from French fries were correlated to the reference oxidation indexes determined by AOCS standard method. The results of BP-ANN prediction showed that the model based on FTIR fitted well (R2 > 0.926, RMSEC 0.876, RMSEC < 1.144, RMSEP< 1.257). This facile strategy with excellent performance has great potential for rapid characterization quality of French fries during frying.

Mercury (Hg) and its derivatives pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Thus, the development of methods for the selective and sensitive determination of Hg(2+) is very important to understand its distribution, and to implement more detailed toxicological studies. Herein, we developed a new method for the detection of Hg(2+) based on the tricyanoethylene derivative and mercaptoethanol. This method could selectively detect Hg(2+) in a 100% aqueous solution by the naked-eye within the range of 1 - 60 μM. Importantly, this method also could detect Hg(2+) quantitatively by ratiometic absorption spectroscopy in the range of 0.1 - 6 μM with a detection limit of 55 nM. We anticipate that this proposed method will be used widely to monitor Hg(2+) in the environment.

Currently, there is a great need to develop methods for the selective detection of fluoride anions (F(-) ) owing to their toxicity in the environment and biological function in living systems. In this study, we developed a new fluorescent probe (probe 1) employing a Si-O bond as a highly selective recognition receptor for detecting F(-) via intramolecular charge transfer. Probe 1 could detect F(-) quantitatively using the turn-on fluorescence spectroscopy method with excellent sensitivity in the range of 4-38 μM and a detection limit of 0.26 μM; the detection time was < 17 min. Two sets of super-synchronization speed control assemblies for two 80 MVA motor-generator units have been developed successfully in order to satisfy the demand of the toroidal field system in the HL-2A tokamak. Based on the three-phase logical no-circumfluence a.c./a.c. cycloconverter, the speeds of two 2500 kW double fed drive motors have been regulated by means of the vector control technology. The maximum operating speed of each motor- generator unit has been raised from 1488 rpm (revolutions per minute) to 1650 rpm and the released energy of each unit during a pulsed discharge can reach 500 MJ. As a result, the toroidal field system has the capacity to provide 2.8 tesla (T) in HL-2A experiments.

Naore Village in the Shuang'an countryside, Ziyang County, Shaanxi Province is located in the Daba region of South Qinling Mountain. It is one of two selenosis or selenium poisoning areas in China. Crops grown in the area are enriched in selenium. The soil is derived from high-selenium, pyritic, black carbonaceous slate and volcanic tuff of the Lujiaping Formation, Early Cambrian and Late Neoproterozoic in age, which is exposed in this area. The Lujiaping Formation is more than 40-m thick. Selenium content of the volcanic tuff averages 32 mg/kg Se and the black carbonaceous slate averages 22 mg/kg Se, which represent the highest concentrations recorded among all the strata and rocks sampled in the Daba region of South Qinling Mountain. This series of selenium-enriched rocks is also found in other places in the Daba region, South Qinling Mountain, where the soil contains about 10 to 30 mg/kg Se. These zones are latent selenosis zones in the Daba region. In addition, a selenium-enriched black carbonaceous shale, of Early Cambrian age, and containing 10 to 40 mg/kg Se, occurs in several other provinces in the south of China.
