Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a crucial role in electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices such as metal–air batteries and water electrolyzers.

Background The incidence of classic radiation-induced liver disease (cRILD) has been significantly reduced. However, non-classic radiation-induced liver disease (ncRILD) remains a major concern following radiotherapy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study evaluated the incidence of ncRILD following intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for Child–Pugh grade B (CP-B) patients with locally advanced HCC and established a nomogram for predicting ncRILD probability. Methods Seventy-five CP-B patients with locally advanced HCC treated with IMRT between September 2014 and July 2021 were included. The max tumor size was 8.39 cm ± 5.06, and the median prescribed dose was 53.24 Gy ± 7.26. Treatment-related hepatotoxicity was evaluated within three months of completing IMRT. A nomogram model was formulated to predict the probability of ncRILD, using univariate and multivariate analysis. Results Among CP-B patients with locally advanced HCC, ncRILD occurred in 17 (22.7%) patients. Two patients (2.7%) exhibited a transaminase elevation of ≥ G3, fourteen (18.7%) exhibited a Child–Pugh score increase of ≥ 2, and one (1.3%) demonstrated both a transaminase elevation of ≥ G3 and a Child–Pugh score increase of ≥ 2. No cRILD cases were observed. A mean dose to the normal liver of ≥ 15.1 Gy was used as the cutoff for ncRILD. Multivariate analysis revealed that the prothrombin time before IMRT, tumour number, and mean dose to the normal liver were independent risk factors for ncRILD. The nomogram established on the basis of these risk factors displayed exceptional predictive performance (AUC = 0.800, 95% CI 0.674–0.926). Conclusions The incidence of ncRILD following IMRT for CP-B patients with locally advanced HCC was acceptable. A nomogram based on prothrombin time before IMRT, tumour number, and mean dose to the normal liver accurately predicted the probability of ncRILD in these patients.

As main components of magnesia-based refractories, magnesia exhibits excellent properties such as high refractoriness and good basic slag corrosion resistance. However, magnesia produced from CaO containing cryptocrystalline magnesite has limited application owing to the low hydration resistance and poor thermal shock resistance (TSR). This work aimed to investigate the reinforcing effects of microscale monoclinic ZrO2 on free CaO containing magnesia for optimizing mechanical properties, TSR and hydration resistance. The results showed that adding ZrO2 could promote the removal of the open pores, strengthen the interface bonding between various grains and produce crack deflection, which improved flexural strength and fracture toughness. As a result, the TSR of the specimens was enhanced effectively due to increased strength and toughness and reduction in the thermal expansion coefficient. Besides, as the ZrO2 was introduced, hydration resistance of the specimens improved significantly, mainly attributing to the decrease in apparent porosity and elimination of the free CaO by forming CaZrO3 and cubic ZrO2 phases.

The service life of the purging plug is one of the fundamental factors that determine the downtime and usage efficiency of the whole ladle. The creep behaviour of the purging plug was thus investigated to identify the possible failure mechanism. At first, the creep parameters of the Norton–Bailey strain hardening rule were inversely identified via the results of the creep test. Then, the thermal-solid coupling model approach was employed to predict the creep behaviour of the purging plug, in which the Norton–Bailey strain hardening rule was applied. The numerical results show that the temperature of the purging plug presents a cyclic trend after the first service period since the preheating temperature is lower than the temperature of molten steel. Furthermore, the distribution of the creep strain intensity in a layered form could also contribute to a gradual spalling of the purging plug end in service. Besides, the creep strain concentration around the slit can be responsible for the clogging of the purging plug.

SiC porous ceramics (SPCs) are key functional medium materials, which are widely applied as porous burners. However, SPCs produced via the polyurethane sponge replica technique usually exhibit a randomly distributed cellular structure, leading to vulnerability and a low combustion efficiency for the porous burners. In this study, SPCs were structurally designed via novel 3D printed resin template technique; this endowed the SPCs with synergistically optimized strength and combustion characteristics. SPCs containing tetrakaidecahedron, octahedron and cubic cells were successfully prepared via SiC slurry coating and sintering in air. The cell parameters determined the strength and combustion properties of the SPCs. The SPCs containing cubic cells exhibited the largest strength and strain, because more struts were present parallel to the loading direction; this is more advantageous for stress bearing compared to those vertical to the loading direction. The tetrakaidecahedron cell facilitated the formation of a disturbance effect within the SPCs to a higher extent than the cubic and octahedron cells, thereby enhancing the heat exchange performance between the fluid and porous framework. Hence, the SPC with tetrakaidecahedron cells exhibited the best combustion properties, which resulted in the highest surface temperature and lowest pollution emission.

Background For patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has become one of the options for clinical local treatment. Immune parameters, including platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and systemic immune inflammatory (SII), predict survival in various cancers. This study aimed to determine whether peripheral immune parameters can predict survival in patients with uHCC undergoing IMRT and establish a clinically useful prognostic nomogram for survival prediction. Methods The clinical data of 309 HCC patients were retrospectively analyzed and randomly divided into training (n = 216) and validation (n = 93) cohorts. PLR, NLR and SII were collected before and after IMRT. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were performed to identify independent prognostic factors affecting survival, which were used to generate a nomogram. Results The median survival was 16.3 months, and significant increases in PLR, NLR, and SII were observed after IMRT (P P Conclusions High levels of immune parameters are associated with poor prognosis in uHCC patients receiving IMRT. Our nomogram accurately predicts the survival of patients with uHCC receiving IMRT.

Tibetan medicine is an essential part of Chinese medicine and has unique theoretical experience and therapeutic advantages. According to the development principle of inheriting the essence, sticking to the truth, and keeping innovative, the supervision department should give clear and reasonable guidance considering the characteristics of Tibetan medicine, establish a standard system for quality control, clinical verification and evaluation, and accelerate the research and commercialization of new drugs. In view of the needs of drug supply-side reform and the current situation of Tibetan medicine and new pharmaceutical research, we ponder and provide suggestions on the confusion faced by the current supervision of Tibetan drug registration, hoping to contribute to the supervision strategy of Tibetan drug registration and the high-quality development of Tibetan medicine industry.

Abstract Compared with the square and circle moonpools, the rectangular moonpool with a large aspect ratio is more conducive to install the equipment. To reduce fluid motion in the rectangular moonpool with a large aspect ratio, a recess is installed in the moonpool. However, the fluid motion in a recessing type moonpool with a large aspect ratio has been rarely studied. In this study, a series of experiments are carried out to investigate on the hydrodynamic characteristics of fluid in the recessing type moonpool with a large aspect ratio. To facilitate the monitoring of the fluid motions, experiments are carried out in a transparent wave channel with the model made up of transparent acrylic. According to the experiment results, there are some complicated fluid motions in the moonpool. Under the resonance condition, the fluid moves violently in the moonpool. To reduce the fluid motion in the recessing type moonpool, three damping devices including the positive grid of flaps, the negative grid of flaps, and the grid of baffles are proposed. The reduction effect of the three damping devices is investigated experimentally. The damping devices have good reduction effects at most time. The smaller the incident wave period, the better is the reduction effect. Introduction The moonpools run vertically through the hull of ships or marine structures, providing a sheltered working environment under harsh ocean conditions. The fluid motion in the moonpool is similar to that in the slit between the ships or rectangular bodies (Faltinsen et al. 2007; Mavrakos & Chatjigeorgiou 2009; Ikeda et al. 2012; Chen et al. 2014; Heo et al. 2014; Zhang & Bandyk 2014; Faltinsen & Timokha 2015; Yu et al. 2017; Gao et al. 2019d). Two dominant types of fluid motions, the piston motion and the sloshing motion, are discussed (Fukuda 1977; Molin 2001; McIver 2005; Kristiansen & Faltinsen 2012; Zhou & Zhang 2013).

We demonstrate flat-top, sharp-edge, silicon add-drop filters using apodized grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (contra-DCs). Periodic sidewall corrugations are imposed on both sides of two asymmetric strip waveguides for contradirectional coupling between the first two TE supermodes of a two-waveguide system. Gaussian apodization is applied to suppress the sidelobes. By laterally shifting the positions of both waveguide Bragg gratings in a complementary manner, which is called complementary lateral-misalignment modulation, our devices avoid phase errors which impair the spectral responses for conventional lateral-misalignment modulated contra-DCs. We demonstrate a complementary lateral-misalignment modulated (CLMM) contra-DC that has a flat-top, rapid roll-off, drop-port spectral response with a sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR) of 20 dB. We also demonstrate a series-cascaded CLMM contra-DCs that has a higher SLSR of 39 dB and a sharper filtering edge. ©

Glass-forming ability is a long-standing concern in the field of metallic glasses (MGs), which greatly limits their maximum casting size and extensive applications. In this work, we report an ultrasonic-assisted rapid cold welding of bulk MGs without using any additives. MGs with various compositions are welded together under a 20,000-Hz high-frequency ultrasonic vibration without losing their amorphous nature. The ultrasonic technology offers the advantages of rapid bonding (< 1 s) at low temperature (near room temperature) and low stress (< 1 MPa). According to the phenomenon observed in the experiment, the activated fresh atoms diffuse through the broken channel port under continuous rupture of the oxide layer, and the ultrasonic vibration accelerates the atomic-diffusion process. Finally, stable bonding of the MG interface is realized. This universal ultrasonic-assisted welding process can realize the composition design of dissimilar MGs as well as tuning of new materials with new performance.

So far, many investigations have reported that Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) could be precisely and flexibly shaped by electrical discharge machining (EDM). However, EDM induced crystallization and roughness is still a bottleneck. In this research, bench-mode electrochemical surface smoothing (ESS) in the NaCl-ethylene glycol (EG) electrolyte has been proposed to post-process the spark erosion treated Zr-based BMGs in order to solve the abovementioned problems. The utilization of the NaCl-EG electrolyte overcomes the difference in electrochemical dissolution mechanisms of multiple components contained in Zr-based BMGs. Taking a sort of Zr-based BMGs, Vit1 (Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5), as an example, voltammetry and chronoamperometry methods have been performed on the BMG surface before and after wire-EDM, respectively, in the NaCl-EG electrolyte to reveal the steady and transient electrochemical behaviors. In order to achieve high-efficiency and high-quality ESS of Zr-based BMGs, a 3D printed setup with lateral flushing has been developed, combined with the micron sized inter-electrode gap (IEG) and the pulse current. The surface morphologies after ESS have been compared to evaluate the effects of the initial surface morphologies, dwell time, and pulse parameters. The surface material properties and mechanical performance before and after ESS have also been investigated by EDS, XRD, XPS, and nanoindentation. The results suggests that the proposed ESS method is capable of quickly eliminating the crystalline layer induced by the thermal shock and reducing roughness caused by the discharge craters, which has been finally validated by fast ESS of two Zr-based BMG molds with ruled surfaces in the NaCl-EG solution.

Low-carbon MgO–C refractories are facing great challenges with severe thermal shock and slag corrosion in service. Here, a new approach, based on the incorporation of nano-sized ZrO2–Al2O3 composite powder, is proposed to enhance the thermal shock resistance and slag resistance of such refractories in this work. The results showed that addition of ZrO2–Al2O3 composite powder was helpful for improving their comprehensive performances. Particularly, the thermal shock resistance of the specimen containing 0.5 wt% composite powder was enhanced significantly which was related to the transformation toughening of zirconia and in-situ formation of more spinel phases in the matrix; also, the slag resistance of the corresponding specimen was significantly improved, which was attributed to the optimization of pore structure and formation of much thicker MgO dense layer.

Fused silica (SiO2) ceramic crucibles with α-Si3N4 coating are commonly used for smelting photovoltaic silicon (Si). However, SiO2 ceramics will inevitably undergo crystallization and large volume change during the high-temperature service, which will lead to crucible cracking and deteriorate the quality and yield of the Si ingot. In this work, α-Si3N4/SiO2 ceramics are fabricated by introducing α-Si3N4 into SiO2 ceramics to inhibit crystallization. The results show that the introduction of α-Si3N4 can effectively inhibit crystallization of SiO2 ceramics at temperature higher than 1450 °C. Only 5 wt% cristobalite form in SiO2 ceramic with 20 wt% α-Si3N4 (heated at 1550 °C for 30min). The crystallization activation energy of SiO2 ceramic containing 20 wt% α-Si3N4 increases by 2.27 times to 931.2kJ/mol compared with that of pure SiO2 ceramic (409.6kJ/mol). The inhibition crystallization effect and increased activation energy derive from the in-situ formation of O–Si–N chemical bond and physical isolation of SiO2 particles by α-Si3N4 powders.

The new route for recycling fly ash was proposed to prepare SiC reticulated porous ceramics (SRPCs) with high strength and increased efficient filtration for molten metal filtration. The effects of fly ash on the rheological characteristics, microstructure evaluation and wetting behavior between SRPCs and molten metal were investigated. It was found that the fly ash was beneficial to thixotropic property of SiC slurry when its content was less than 30 wt%. Furthermore, fly ash in SRPCs was completely transformed into mullite with needle-shape at 1300 °C, forming a porous structure containing micro pores and windows. SRPCs containing 20 wt% fly ash exhibited a higher strength because of the improved rheological properties of SiC slurry and the optimized microstructure in skeleton. In addition, the added fly ash in SRPCs could increase the contact angle between skeleton substrate and molten metal via microporosization of skeleton, thus exhibiting the potential ability to improve the filtration efficiency.

BackgroundRadiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is a severe side effect of radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ,and one of the major hindrances to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy. Previous studies have confirmed that sodium butyrate (NaB) has potential of anti-radiation toxicity. However, the mechanism of the protective effect of NaB against RILI has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to explore the underlying protective mechanisms of NaB against RILI in NSCLC through network pharmacology, molecular docking, molecular dynamic simulations and in vivo experiments.MethodsThe predictive target genes of NaB were obtained from the PharmMapper database and the literature review. The involved genes of RILI and NSCLC were predicted using OMIM and GeneCards database. The intersectional genes of drug and disease were identified using the Venny tool and uploaded to the Cytoscape software to identify 5 core target genes of NaB associated with RILI. The correlations between the 5 core target genes and EGFR, PD-L1, immune infiltrates, chemokines and chemokine receptors were analyzed using TIMER 2.0, TIMER and TISIDB databases. We constructed the mechanism maps of the 3 key signaling pathways using the KEGG database based on the results of GO and KEGG analyses from Metascape database. The 5 core target genes and drug were docked using the AutoDock Vina tool and visualized using PyMOL software. GROMACS software was used to perform 100 ns molecular dynamics simulation. Irradiation-induced lung injury model in mice were established to assess the therapeutic effects of NaB.ResultsA total of 51 intersectional genes involved in NaB against RILI in NSCLC were identified. The 5 core target genes were AKT1, TP53, NOTCH1, SIRT1, and PTEN. The expressions of the 5 core target genes were significantly associated with EGFR, PD-L1, immune infiltrates, chemokines and chemokine receptors, respectively. The results from GO analysis of the 51 intersectional genes revealed that the biological processes were focused on the regulation of smooth muscle cell proliferation, oxidative stress and cell death, while the three key KEGG pathways were enriched in PI3K-Akt signal pathway, p53 signal pathway, and FOXO signal pathway. The docking of NaB with the 5 core target genes showed affinity and stability, especially AKT1. In vivo experiments showed that NaB treatment significantly protected mice from RILI, with reduced lung histological damage. In addition, NaB treatment significantly inhibited the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.ConclusionsNaB may protect patients from RILI in NSCLC through multiple target genes including AKT1, TP53, NOTCH1, SIRT1 and PTEN, with multiple signaling pathways involving, including PI3K-Akt pathway, p53 pathway, and FOXO pathways. Our findings effectively provide a feasible theoretical basis to further elucidate the mechanism of NaB in the treatment of RILI.

In the present work, PH13-8Mo stainless steel parts without yttrium and with yttrium (Y) were manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructure, phase composition and grain orientation of the stainless steels parts with Y and without Y were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The characterization results revealed that the addition of Y clearly refined the grain size of the PH13-8Mo steel formed part, resulting in more equiaxed massive grains and in a less anisotropic microstructure. PH13-8Mo stainless steel formed parts were mainly composed of martensite and retained austenite. The addition of Y could significantly increase the content of retained austenite and also generate nano-sized precipitates containing Y. The mechanical test results showed that both strength and toughness of the shaped parts containing Y were improved synergistically. The yield strength reached 1443 MPa, the elongation was 12.2%, and the room temperature impact energy reached 124.25 J/cm2. The strengthening and toughening by Y of the formed parts were mainly attributed to grain refinement, higher volume fraction of the retained austenite and the formation of nano-sized precipitates containing Y.

The issue of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in the water has received critical attention due to the health effects on humans. In the water environment, interactions between bovine serum albumins (BSA), the most abundant water-soluble protein, and DBPs unavoidably occur. In this study, comparative binding interactions of two aromatic DBPs - 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) and 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) with BSA were investigated systematically utilizing fluorescence spectrometry, UV absorption spectrometry, isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular docking approach. The fluorescence quenching results indicated that TCP/TBP could quench the endogenous fluorescence of BSA through static quenching mechanisms, and TBP showed a more substantial quenching effect. PurposeThe purpose of this study is to analyze clinical information and combine significant parameters to generate a predictive model and achieve a better prognosis prediction of dermatomyositis-associated interstitial lung disease with positive melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 antibody (MDA5+ DM-ILD) and stratify patients according to prognostic risk factors appropriately.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 63 patients MDA5+ DM-ILD who were treated in our hospital from January 2018 to January 2021. Our study incorporated most clinical characteristics in clinical practice to explore the associations and predictive functions of clinical characteristics and prognosis. Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, chi-squared test, Pearson correlation analysis, Cox regression analysis, R, receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC curves), and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were performed to identify independent predictors for the prognosis of MDA5+DM-ILD.ResultsIn all the 63 patients with MDA5+DM-ILD, 44 improved but 19 did not. Poor prognosis was found more frequently in patients who were older, clinically amyopathic variant of dermatomyositis (CADM), and/or with short duration, short interval of DM and ILD, long length of stay, fever, dyspnea, non-arthralgia, pulmonary infection, pleural effusion (PE), high total computed tomography scores (TCTs), ground-glass opacity (GGO), consolidation score, reticular score and fibrosis score, decreased forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1), albumin, A/G, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), high titer of anti-MDA5, proteinuria, high levels of monocyte, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin (FER), neuron specific enolase (NSE) and glucocorticoid, antibiotic, antiviral, and non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV). The multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that duration, fever, PE, TCTs and aspartate transaminase (AST) were independent predictors of poor prognosis in patients with MDA5+DM-ILD. The nomogram model quantified the risk of 400-day death as: duration ≤ 4 months (5 points), fever (88 points), PE (21 points), TCTs ≥10 points (22 points), and AST ≥200 U/L (100 points) with high predictive accuracy and convenience. The ROC curves possessed good discriminative ability for combination of fever, PE, TCTs, and AST, as reflected by the area under curve (AUC) being.954, 95% CI 0.902–1.000, and sensitivity and specificity being 84.2 and 94.6%, respectively.ConclusionWe demonstrated that duration, fever, PE, TCTs, and AST could be integrated together to be independent predictors of poor prognosis in MDA5+ DM-ILD with highly predictive accuracy.

Purpose Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) may have significant immunomodulatory effects that enhance tumor response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. This phase 2 clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of combining palliative SBRT with camrelizumab (an anti-PD1 monoclonal antibody) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC). Methods Patients with uHCC, Child–Pugh A/B liver function, and at least one measurable lesion were enrolled between April 2020 and August 2022. Patients were administered 200 mg camrelizumab intravenously from the first day of palliative SBRT and then every 3 weeks. Palliative SBRT was delivered daily over five fractions per week, with a dose range of 30–50 Gy. The primary endpoints were objective response rate (ORR) and safety. This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04193696). Results Twenty-one patients were enrolled; the median radiation dose was 40 Gy, and the median number of cycles of camrelizumab was five. The ORR was 52.4%. After a median follow-up of 19.7 months, the median progression-free and overall survival were 5.8 and 14.2 months, respectively. The overall survival probability was 85.7% at 6 months, 76.2% at 9 months, and 59.9% at 12 months. All grade 3 treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) occurred in five patients (23.8%) and were manageable. No grade 4/5 TRAEs were observed. Conclusion Palliative SBRT plus camrelizumab showed promising antitumor activity against uHCC. Toxicities were manageable with no unexpected safety issues. This study provides evidence of a new therapeutic method for the treatment of uHCC.

Computed tomography (CT)-assessed body composition is considered a novel prognostic factor for cancer patients. Owing to the need for new prognostic markers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing radiotherapy, we investigated the impact of body composition on outcomes in this patient population. We retrospectively evaluated 109 HCC patients receiving radiotherapy. The skeletal muscle index, subcutaneous adipose tissue index (SATI), and visceral adipose tissue index within 1 mo, before radiotherapy were assessed based on a single CT image slice at the level of the third lumbar (L3) vertebra. The impact of body composition parameters on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was assessed. Overall, 62 (56.9%) patients died, and 47 (43.1%) patients experienced recurrence during a median follow-up period of 20.5 mo. Multivariate analysis revealed that SATI was an independent prognostic factor for both PFS (hazard ratio [HR] 0.542

The microstructure evolution and the pitting corrosion resistance of a supermartensitic stainless steel after deep cryogenic treatment process were clarified through X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical methods. The results showed that the microstructure of supermartensitic stainless steel mainly consisted of reversed austenite, tempered martensite, and M23C6 carbides after tempering. The deep cryogenic treatment promoted the refinement of the martensite laths and the precipitation of the carbides in comparison with the traditional process. TEM analysis indicated that the segregation of Si atoms at the boundary was found at the interface between carbide and martensite. The pitting corrosion potential of the specimens subjected to deep cryogenic treatment decreased with the elevated tempering temperature, and the lowest pitting corrosion potential was found at the tempering temperature of 650 °C. The sensitivity of the pitting corrosion potential was attributed to the precipitation of M23C6 carbides and Si atoms segregation. Si atoms segregation engendered the formation of Cr-depleted zone near M23C6 and impeded the recovery of Cr-depleted zone.

Developing materials with tailorable properties has been the long-sought goal of humankind. Forming composite materials with superior properties by combining two or more materials has emerged as a competitive means in the search and design of new materials. However, it is still a grand challenge to use metallic materials as a binder for composites because of their lack of adhesion. In the present work, we proposed a facile and flexible route to synthesize composites using metallic glass as a glue to bond various materials, ranging from conductors to insulators, and metals to nonmetals, together. The mechanical, magnetic and electrical performances of the composites can be manually regulated by changing the addition ratios of the metallic glass glue and the corresponding admixture. In addition, porous structures were also obtained and tuned by dissolving the soluble admixture in water. In principle, our approach provides a new idea for the fabrication and optimization of composites using metallic materials as binders. The outcome of our current research opens up a window not only to synthesize composite materials with tailorable properties universally and flexibly, but also towards the discovery of potential multi-functional metal containing composites.
