Liver transplantation (LT) is the best treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the surgical technique needs to be improved. The present study aimed to evaluate the "no-touch" technique in LT.From January 2018 to December 2019, we performed a prospective randomized controlled trial on HCC patients who underwent LT. The patients were randomized into two groups: a no-touch technique LT group (NT group, n = 38) and a conventional LT technique group (CT group, n = 46). Operative outcomes and survival in the two groups were analyzed.The perioperative parameters were comparable between the two groups (P0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.732) or overall survival (OS) (P = 0.891). Of 36 patients who were beyond the Hangzhou criteria for LT, the DFS of the patients in the NT group was significantly longer than that in the CT group (median 402 vs. 126 days, P = 0.025). In 31 patients who had portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT), DFS and OS in the NT group were significantly better than those in the CT group (median DFS 420 vs. 167 days, P = 0.022; 2-year OS rate 93.8% vs. 66.7%, P = 0.043). In 14 patients who had diffuse-type HCCs, DFS and OS were significantly better in the NT group than in the CT group (median DFS 141 vs. 56 days, P = 0.008; 2-year OS rate 75.0% vs. 33.3%, P = 0.034). Multivariate analysis showed that for patients with PVTT and diffuse-type HCCs, the no-touch technique was an independent favorable factor for OS (PVTT: HR = 0.018, 95% CI: 0.001-0.408, P = 0.012; diffuse-type HCCs: HR = 0.034, 95% CI: 0.002-0.634, P = 0.024).The no-touch technique improved the survival of patients with advanced HCC compared with the conventional technique. The no-touch technique may provide a new and effective LT technique for advanced HCCs.

The verification of reachability properties of fuzzy systems is usually based on the fuzzy Kripke structure or possibilistic Kripke structure. However, fuzzy Kripke structure or possibilistic Kripke structure is not enough to describe nondeterministic and concurrent fuzzy systems in real life. In this paper, firstly, we propose the generalized possibilistic decision process as the model of nondeterministic and concurrent fuzzy systems, and deduce the possibilities of sets of paths of the generalized possibilistic decision process relying on defining of schedulers. Then, we give fuzzy matrices calculation methods of the maximal possibilities and the minimal possibilities of eventual reachability, always reachability, constrained reachability, repeated reachability and persistent reachability. Finally, we propose a model checking approach to convert the verification of safety property into the analysis of reachabilities.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a dreadful, chronic, and irreversibly progressive disease leading to death with a few effective treatments. Our previous study suggested that repetitive hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment alleviates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice. Here, we investigated the protective mechanism of HBO treatment against pulmonary fibrosis using an integrated approach. Analyzing publicly available expression data from the mouse model of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis as well as IPF patients, several potential mechanisms of relevance to IPF pathology were identified, including increased epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and glycolysis. High EMT or glycolysis scores in bronchoalveolar lavage were strong independent predictors of mortality in multivariate analysis. These processes were potentially driven by hypoxia and blocked by HBO treatment. Together, these data support HBO treatment as a viable strategy against pulmonary fibrosis.

Emerging high-phenolic sweeteners impart a sweet taste to foods and beverages, and are desirable sugar alternatives. Most refined sugars have a low antioxidant content due to polyphenol degradation occurring during sugar refining. Natural sweeteners such as honey, molasses, and dark brown sugar possess moderate to high phenolic content. Other phytochemicals found in natural sweeteners are carotenoids, organic acids, and terpenoids. Additionally, molasses and syrups synthesised from anthocyanin-rich fruits and roots contain anthocyanins apart from flavonoids. Non-nutritive sweeteners, such as sugar alcohols, are low in calories besides their sweet taste. Sweet proteins, dihydrochalcones, phenolics, and terpenoid derivatives are emerging sweeteners. These sweet substances are effective antioxidants that could help reduce oxidative stress in the human body although the amount ingested is usually low. The present review emphasised specific natural, high-phenolic, and other sweet compounds, and examined the antioxidative characteristics of these sweeteners. The risk of excessive ingestion of these sweet substances is yet to be proven.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 1.95% and 5.55% of adults in China suffer from subclinical thyroid diseases, which is difficult to diagnose and treat. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the development and prognosis of subclinical thyroid diseases to provide a reference from our single center experience. METHODS: A total of 240 cases from April 2019 to August 2021 in the laboratory information system database of Huanghua Development Boai Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Binary logistic regression was conducted to analyze odds ratio (OR) of subclinical thyroid disease types returning to a normal state. RESULTS: Among the patients hypothyroidism Ia and hyperthyroidism Ia were the most common type with conversion to the normal state (P< 0.001). TSH level of patients with conversion to a normal state was significantly lower than that of those who developed to abnormal disease (P= 0.015). The OR values of hyperthyroidism Ia and hypothyroidism Ia that returned to a normal state compared with hyperthyroidism Ib were 2.659 (1.159 ∼ 6.096, P= 0.021) and 3.138 (1.1.278 ∼ 7.709, P= 0.013), respectively. The OR value of hypothyroidism Ib that returned to normal compared with hyperthyroidism Ib was 0.629 (0.131 ∼ 3.010, P= 0.561). Thyroid hormone levels, age, and gender at first diagnosis were not impact factor for prognosis of subclincal thyroid disease (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Cases with grade hypothyroidism Ia and hyperthyroidism Ia are more likely to revert to normal state than other subclinical thyroid diseases. TSH reference range should be explored for diagnosis and treatment.

Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) aging is accompanied by hematopoietic reconstitution dysfunction, including loss of regenerative and engraftment ability, myeloid differentiation bias, and elevated risks of hematopoietic malignancies. Gut microbiota, a key regulator of host health and immunity, has recently been reported to affect hematopoiesis. However, there is currently limited empirical evidence explaining the direct impact of gut microbiome on aging hematopoiesis. In this study, we performed fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from young mice to aged mice and observed a significant increment in lymphoid differentiation and decrease in myeloid differentiation in aged recipient mice. Furthermore, FMT from young mice rejuvenated aged HSCs with enhanced short-term and long-term hematopoietic repopulation capacity. Mechanistically, single-cell RNA sequencing deciphered that FMT from young mice mitigated inflammatory signals, upregulated the FoxO signaling pathway, and promoted lymphoid differentiation of HSCs during aging. Finally, integrated microbiome and metabolome analyses uncovered that FMT reshaped gut microbiota composition and metabolite landscape, and Lachnospiraceae and tryptophan-associated metabolites promoted the recovery of hematopoiesis and rejuvenated aged HSCs. Together, our study highlights the paramount importance of the gut microbiota in HSC aging and provides insights into therapeutic strategies for aging-related hematologic disorders.

This study aimed to determine the structural characteristics and adsorption capacities of a novel activated carbon prepared from passion fruit by-product. Passion fruit peel was carbonized and structurally modified using phosphoric acid-potassium hydroxide reagent before carbon activation. Industrial-activated carbon was used as a control sample. The surface functional groups and adsorption capacities of the activated carbon samples were determined. The results showed that the chemical-modified activated carbon had anhydride and carboxylic acid as the main functional groups on the carbon surface, together with several conformations of the hydroxyl group. These hydroxyl confirmations were in alkoxy and carboxylate forms but not phenoxy. The peel-based activated carbon had a smoother carbon surface with multiple micropores, whereas the carbon surface of industrial activated carbon was rough with multiple meso- and macropores. The methylene blue adsorption capacity (0.1 mg/mL methylene blue) of the peel-based activated carbon (99.97±0.01%) was comparable to the industrial activated carbon (100.00±0.01%). But the peel-based activated carbon had better cholesterol and albumin adsorption capacities than the industrial activated carbon. Since activated carbon prepared from the fruit peel has better adsorption capacities of cholesterol and other chemicals in liquid foods, it can replace the wood-based activated carbon in food and pharmaceutical applications.

Introduction: Patients with left carotid artery atherosclerotic stenosis have an increased ischemic stroke risk. Left carotid stenosis, the most common cause of the transient ischemic attack, is related to a higher risk of acute stroke. Left carotid artery stenosis is also associated with cerebral artery infarction. The significant coronary stenosis promotes ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions. The severe coronary stenosis plays an important role in development and progression of myocardial infarction. However, the dynamic changes of circulating oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in the carotid stenosis combined with coronary artery stenosis are not clear, and it also remains unknown whether mark of oxidative stress and inflammation are potential therapeutic targets for carotid stenosis combined with coronary artery stenosis. Aim: This study aims to explore the effects of oxidative stress combined with an inflammatory response on left carotid artery stenosis with coronary artery disease in patients. Methods: We, therefore, tested the hypothesis that levels of markers of oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with coexistent severe carotid and coronary artery stenosis in patients. We measured the circulating levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OX-LDL), homocysteine (Hcy), F2- isoprostanes (F2-IsoPs), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), prostaglandin E2 (PG-E2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in patients with combined carotid and coronary artery severe stenosis. We also assessed the relationships among oxidative stress, inflammation, and severe stenosis of the carotid with a coronary artery in patients. Results: Levels of MDA, OX-LDL, Hcy, F2-IsoPs, TNF-α, hs-CRP, PG-E2, and IFN-γ were remarkably increased (P < 0.001) in patients with combined carotid and coronary artery severe stenosis. High levels of oxidative stress and inflammation may be related to severe stenosis of the carotid with coronary arteries in patients. Conclusion: Our observations indicated that measurements of oxidative stress and inflammatory markers may be valuable for the assessment of the degree of carotid with coronary artery stenosis. The biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammatory response may become therapeutic targets for carotid artery stenosis with coronary artery stenosis in patients.

Network embedding aims to map nodes in a network to low-dimensional vector representations. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have received much attention and have achieved state-of-the-art performance in learning node representation. Using fundamental sociological theories (status theory and balance theory) to model signed networks, basing GNN on learning node embedding has become a hot topic in signed network embedding. However, most GNNs fail to use edge weight information in signed networks, and most models cannot be directly used in weighted signed networks. We propose a novel signed directed graph neural networks model named WSNN to learn node embedding for Weighted signed networks. The proposed model reconstructs link signs, link directions, and signed directed triangles simultaneously. Based on the network representations learned by the proposed model, we conduct link sign prediction in signed networks. Extensive experimental results in real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model over the state-of-the-art network embedding algorithms for graph representation learning in signed networks.

A new cobalt(II) compound with the formula [Co(5-Br-pyc)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)(Cl)]·2H2O (1·H2O) (5-Br-Hpyc = 5-bromo-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, 2,2′-bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) has been hydrothermally synthesized and well characterized. The X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis showed that 1⋅2H2O has crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c (no. 14). The Co(II) center was octahedrally bonded by one bidentate chelate 5-Br-pyc anion and one 2,2′-bipy, one water molecule as well as one chloride anion to form the mononuclear structure of 1⋅2H2O. Complex 1⋅2H2O forms a 3D network through abundant O–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds and π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. Notably, the 5-Br-Hpyc ligand was in situ generated by decarboxylation of the 3-bromo-pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (3-Br-H2pydc) precursor selectively on 2-position under hydrothermal conditions. The magnetic properties, the Hirshfeld surface structure and the synthetic process for 1⋅2H2O have been carefully described and discussed.

This study evaluates whether changes in weight among school-aged youth in California due to the COVID-19 lockdown vary by social constructs of race/ethnicity and associated social factors.Including 160,472 youth ages 5-17 years enrolled at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, mixed effects models stratified by age group were fitted to estimate changes in distance from the median body mass index (BMI)-for-age from 3/2020 to 1/2021 (lockdown) compared to the same period prepandemic.Excess pandemic weight gain was higher among Black and Hispanic youth 5-17 years than among white and Asian youth; this difference was most pronounced in those ages 5-11 years. In youth 5-11 years, the distance from the median BMI-for-age increased by 1.72 kg/mThe COVID-19 pandemic lockdown led to a gain of excess body weight, particularly for Black and Hispanic youth; this weight gain varied by social factors associated with race and ethnicity.
