Specialised transformers-based models (such as BioBERT and BioMegatron) are adapted for the biomedical domain based on publicly available biomedical corpora. As such, they have the potential to encode large-scale biological knowledge. We investigate the encoding and representation of biological knowledge in these models, and its potential utility to support inference in cancer precision medicine - namely, the interpretation of the clinical significance of genomic alterations. We compare the performance of different transformer baselines; we use probing to determine the consistency of encodings for distinct entities; and we use clustering methods to compare and contrast the internal properties of the embeddings for genes, variants, drugs and diseases. We show that these models do indeed encode biological knowledge, although some of this is lost in fine-tuning for specific tasks. Distance learning is a type of instruction between a teacher and students separated by a physical distance where communication takes place through mediated information encompassing one or more technological media. In other words, the instruction participants stay in different places, yet take part in the same learning activities sequenced, paced and controlled by the teacher using new technologies. The paper aims to show the advantages and disadvantages of distance education during the COVID-19 lockdown at the primary level, the emphasis being placed upon, among others, the teacher–student and student–student relationships, the infrastructure and skills required for a lesson, as well as some “food for thought” in the form of possible changes and areas of improvement to be introduced suggested by the sample. The data comes from the questionnaire distributed among 60 parents of first graders. This age group is believed to be extremely demanding and difficult to teach, mainly due to the literacy and numeracy skills included in the core curriculum, falling on the onset of the first grade in a primary school.

In the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) the causative process is the immunological destructionof pancreatic beta cells (-cells) by autoreactive cytotoxic lymphocytes and macrophages.These changes are reflected in the blood of patients as autoantibodies directed against-cell antigens. Antibodies against the following are measured: unidentified cytoplasmic -cells(ICA), glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), tyrosine phosphatase (IA-2), endogenous insulin (IAA)and zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8). The complete destruction of pancreatic beta cells stops the productionof autoantibodies. It is therefore believed that the determination of antibodies associatedwith T1D is of major importance in the early stages of the disease. The IAA test must beperformed prior to initiating insulin therapy. As in the case of ICA, GADA and IA-2A, a positiveIAA result in a patient who is not taking insulin confirms the presence of T1D. The latest in T1Ddiagnostics is ZnT8, an ideal complement to the current tests. About 25-30% of patients who donot have GAD, IA2A or ICA antibodies have ZnT8 antibodies. Moreover, in some clinical cases ofT1D with negative specific antibodies, the isolated presence of ICA is observed, which indicatesother, hitherto unknown antigens. Along with routine antibody measurements, optimising samplingand test development in terms of reliability and cost-effectiveness continues. This summarydescribes the present utility and future prospects for T1D prediction and diagnosis using themeasurement of autoantibodies.

The paradigm of family-centered early childhood intervention indicates that the family and professionals are in a symmetrical relationship and share responsibility for taking appropriate measures to provide the child and his/her family with adequate support based on the family's needs and resources. The aim of the study was to identify the level of parental competences (translated as parents' dispositions conditioning their use of such ways of dealing with the child that fosters its development - shaping the child's autonomy and self-regulation skills and sense of efficacy) of parents of children undergoing early intervention, in this case, children with hearing impairment. The study covered 52 randomly chosen mothers. Parental Competence Test by Anna Matczak and Aleksandra Jaworowska was used to measure outcome results.

The SCARECROW (SCR) transcription factor plays a key role in plant growth and development. However, we know very little about the role of SCR regulated pathways in plant development. Here, we used the homozygous scr1 mutant Arabidopsis thaliana (Wassilewskija ecotype), which had a T-DNA insertion in the SCR coding region and lacks a detectable SCR transcript. This scr1 mutant has a determinate mode of root growth, shoot agravitropism and abnormal internal architecture in all organs examined. To screen for mutants that suppress the scr1 abnormal phenotypes, we exposed homozygous scr1 seeds to ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) mutagen. Upon growth out of these mutagenized seeds, thirteen suppressor mutant-harboring strains were identified. All thirteen suppressor-harboring strains were homozygous for scr1 and lacked the SCR transcript. Ten scr hypocotyl gravitropic suppressor lines showed improved hypocotyl gravitropic response. These ten suppressors fall into six complementation groups suggesting six different gene loci. Similarly, three independent scr root length suppressor lines rescued only the root growth phenotype and fell into three complementation groups, suggesting the involvement of three different gene loci. These suppressors might identify novel functions of the SCR gene in plant development.

The study aimed to recognise the preferences of various stakeholder groups representing three regions of Poland towards the most important forest ecosystem services and to determine the threats to performing these functions resulting from the occurrence of extreme weather phenomena. The study was based on surveys conducted in 2019 among various stakeholders in three regions of Poland. The respondents assigned a point weight value to each of the seven indicated forest functions and reported the occurrence of extreme weather events causing damage to forests owned or supervised by them. The survey results indicate that for all stakeholders, the most important function of the forest is timber production. However, respondents from the southern region paid more attention to water protection through forests than respondents from other regions.

In modern laboratory diagnostics, the flow of information in electronic form is common, more and more extensive, and complicated. For the flow of this information to be efficient and complete, it should include medical diagnostic laboratories and their complete environment, including nationwide healthcare information systems. Optimizing the electronic flow of information requires standardization of terminology and coding of laboratory procedures and the creation of IT infrastructure, which, with institutional support, will ensure adequate access to laboratory diagnostic data in the healthcare system. In this article, we present a system proposal prepared by the Section for Standardization of Information in Laboratory Medicine of the PSLD in cooperation with experts from other bodies, the purpose of which would be to systematize, improve the quality and certainty of processing information on laboratory diagnostics. The proposed System of Standardization of Information in Laboratory Diagnostics (SSILD) should ultimately allow for the unambiguity of the names and codes of procedures using the LOINC® terminology, certainty as to the key features of the procedures, certainty as to the reference intervals/decision values, access to information necessary for the interpretation of the result and clarity as to whether the procedures are covered by the regulation of the guaranteed benefits basket.

Significant improvements in mammography systems have been achieved with the introduction of active matrix flat-panel digital detectors. The advent of this technology also makes it possible to implement computational methods for quantitative image analysis. This study describes new software created to perform detective quantum efficiency (DQE) calculations fully compliant with the IEC 62220–1-2 standard. Python-based software was developed that contains modules to calculate inverse conversion function, modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectrum (NPS), and DQE itself. A graphical user interface (GUI) and further add-ons make this software more user-friendly. Results are immediately displayed diagrammatically, and complete output data are exported to a .csv file. The code is available freely, as a compiled, executable file (.exe). The program was successfully tested using DICOM images obtained from mammography units from different manufacturers. This study also includes validation of the new software, based on comparisons of results obtained for the same set of data with two other, freely available programs.

Internationalization is an inevitable phenomenon among all contemporary higher education institutions (HEIs) in a globalizing world. It is the driving force for development and progress. In course of the last 30 years, it became an inevitable element of HE management. However, it carries along a number of risks, pitfalls, and organizational challenges. To hedge those, quality assurance (QA) is called to the stage. HEIs therefore need not only to search for chances but also to increase the advancement of methods to safeguard the quality of education and research. It is for this reason that a discussion on the mutual evolution and impact of internationalization and QA is required, and this is the aim of this article to combine the issues dialectically. There are tools and institutions within the internationally and nationally developed QA concepts that have the potential and aim to secure the benefits of internationalization.

Variations in the form of the human face, which plays a role in our individual identities and societal interactions, have fascinated scientists and artists alike. Here, we review our current understanding of the genetics underlying variation in craniofacial morphology and disease-associated dysmorphology, synthesizing decades of progress on Mendelian syndromes in addition to more recent results from genome-wide association studies of human facial shape and disease risk. We also discuss the various approaches used to phenotype and quantify facial shape, which are of particular importance due to the complex, multipartite nature of the craniofacial form. There is an increasing interest in the use of Deep Learning (DL) based methods as a supporting analytical framework in oncology. However, most direct applications of DL will deliver models with limited transparency and explainability, which constrain their deployment in biomedical settings. This systematic review discusses DL models used to support inference in cancer biology with a particular emphasis on multi-omics analysis. It focuses on how existing models address the need for better dialogue with prior knowledge, biological plausibility and interpretability, fundamental properties in the biomedical domain. For this, we retrieved and analyzed 42 studies focusing on emerging architectural and methodological advances, the encoding of biological domain knowledge and the integration of explainability methods. We discuss the recent evolutionary arch of DL models in the direction of integrating prior biological relational and network knowledge to support better generalisation (e.g. pathways or Protein-Protein-Interaction networks) and interpretability. This represents a fundamental functional shift towards models which can integrate mechanistic and statistical inference aspects. We introduce a concept of bio-centric interpretability and according to its taxonomy, we discuss representational methodologies for the integration of domain prior knowledge in such models. The paper provides a critical outlook into contemporary methods for explainability and interpretabiltiy used in DL for cancer. The analysis points in the direction of a convergence between encoding prior knowledge and improved interpretability. Bakuchiol is a plant-derived substance that is more and more used by cosmetics manufacturers as an ingredient of anti-aging preparations. The aim of the article was to compare the structure and action of bakuchiol to retinol, as well as to present its effect on the skin based on already published research. Due to its properties, bakuchiol becomes an alternative ingredient to retinol, hence is also known as vegetable retinol.

Time perspective is of key significance in overcoming an identity crisis in adolescence. Research using the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) was conducted on a group of 311 adolescents (aged 13–18) in several youth educational centres in south-eastern Poland. The research was designed to identify the significance of time perspective when it comes to levels of depression, stress and loneliness experienced in conditions of institutional rehabilitation and education. Linear regression analysis demonstrated the following: a positive past focus reduces the intensity of anxiety and depression; a positive past and future focus results in reduced depression, loneliness and stress; the experience of stress combined with depressionenhances the significance of time perspective for the feeling of loneliness; and a low level of family loneliness reduces depression.

Artykuł dotyczy eptonimów pochodzących z piosenek Wojciecha Młynarskiego. W wyniku rekonesansu leksykograficznego i korpusowego wyodrębniono w nim siedemnaście połączeń tego rodzaju. Następnie osiem spośród nich poddano analizie semantyczno-pragmatycznej z wykorzystaniem instrumentarium oferowanego przez lingwistykę antropologiczno-kulturową. Kryterium selekcji fraz stanowił stopień ich osadzenia w kontekście historycznym: wybrano te jednostki, których właściwa interpretacja uwarunkowana jest znajomością realiów życia społecznego epoki PRL. Wskazano na trzy zasadnicze obszary pojęciowe, których owe jednostki dotyczyły: pracę, zabawę oraz media. Obserwacji poddano tekstowe obrazy zjawisk z owych obszarów i na tym tle dokonano semantyczno-pragmatycznej charakterystyki skrzydlatych słów.

Investor relations are an important tool for strategic management in a company. Appropriate communication between the entities present on the market and effective determination of financial and economic issues between companies and investors are the main areas of their activity. The aim of this article is to present the state of investor relations in Poland. A review of Polish and English language literature has been made. It focuses on the essence, objectives and tools of investor relations. The best results on the contemporary capital market are achieved only by companies that engage in new technological solutions used, e.g. videoconferencing, conference call, teleconferences, Facebook, Twitter. The survey conducted among Polish individual investors indicates what information preferences and requirements investors in Poland have. What is more, the analysis of investors’ answers showed that the topic is important and current, but in Poland the awareness of investor relations is on an average level. The authors indicated solutions that could contribute to increasing the involvement of Polish listed companies in communication using new technologies. The authors pointed out the IR models available on the capital market, and recommended a modern model of investor relations with specific proposals for change. The authors’ own research confirms that companies notice the importance of new technologies, but do not implement them in their operations. On the one hand, they want to develop and provide the business environment with transparent and up-to-date information, and on the other hand, they are used to the traditional model and do not want to get involved in technological innovations. Relacje inwestorskie są istotnym narzędziem zarządzania strategicznego w przedsiębiorstwie. Odpowiednia komunikacja między podmiotami występującymi na rynku oraz efektywne ustalanie kwestii finansowo-ekonomicznych między spółkami i inwestorami to główne obszary ich działania. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie stanu relacji inwestorskich w Polsce. Dokonano przeglądu polskich i anglojęzycznych pozycji literaturowych. Skupiono uwagę na istocie, celach i narzędziach relacji inwestorskich. Najlepsze wyniki na współczesnym rynku kapitałowym osiągają wyłącznie spółki, które angażują się w nowe rozwiązania technologiczne wykorzystywane, np. wideokonferencje, conference call, telekonferencje, Facebook, Twitter. Przeprowadzone badanie ankietowe wśród polskich inwestorów indywidualnych wskazuje jakie preferencje informacyjne i wymagania mają inwestorzy w Polsce. Co więcej, analiza odpowiedzi inwestorów ukazała, iż temat jest ważny i aktualny, lecz w Polsce świadomość o relacjach inwestorskich jest na przeciętnym poziomie. Autorzy wskazali rozwiązania, które mogłyby przyczynić się do zwiększenia zaangażowania polskich spółek giełdowych w komunikację wykorzystując nowe technologie. Autorzy wskazali dostępne na rynku kapitałowym modele IR, a przede wszystkim zarekomendowali współczesny model relacji inwestorskich z konkretnymi propozycjami zmian. Przeprowadzone badanie własne potwierdza, iż spółki zauważają jak ważne są nowe technologie, natomiast nie wdrażają ich do swojej działalności. Z jednej strony chcą się rozwijać i przekazywać otoczeniu biznesowemu transparentne i aktualne informacje, a z drugiej strony przyzwyczaili się do tradycyjnego modelu i nie chcą angażować się w nowinki technologiczne.

Introduction Psychological factors can have a significant impact on diabetes control. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between emotional intelligence and glycemic control in type one diabetes (T1D) adolescents. Material and methods This prospective study enrolled 97 consecutive children admitted to our department and aged 15 to 17 with T1D. The Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire INTE was used to measure emotional intelligence. The results were correlated with a glycemic control status, measured by current and mean (since the diagnosis of T1D, minimum four tests per year) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). An additional questionnaire collected the demographic and social data. Results Our study found a significant, negative correlation between HbA1c level and the ability to utilize emotions to support thinking and actions (Factor I of the INTE questionnaire). There was no significant correlation between emotional intelligence General Score or Factor II (the ability to recognize emotions) and glycemic control. Conclusions A higher ability to utilize emotions to support thinking and actions positively correlates with metabolic control in the adolescent population with T1D. The appropriate emotional intelligence training and better psychological care may improve the metabolic outcomes of children with T1D. This merits further study.

DNA sequences were analysed using species delimitation methods, haplotype network reconstructions, Bayesian molecular dating and demographic analysis. The COI-based delimitation results were validated with nuclear 28S RNA data.ResultsThe species flock distribution has weak horizontal but clear vertical structure. The diversity across bathymetric gradients correlates with temperature and salinity; and the highest diversity with sublittoral and springs of lake’s shore. Two new MOTUs representing putatively new species are revealed and supported also by the nuclear marker. The time of flock radiation overlaps with the time of lake formation. The COI gene shows signs of positive selection and an acceleration in substitution rate. The demographic changes of the flock happened during the last ky.Main conclusionsDistribution of theGammarusspecies-flock is vertically structured, reflecting habitat zonation. Parapatric speciation as one of the mechanisms in flock’s diversification is suggested. Detection of new MOTU suggests that the flock’s diversity is still not fully revealed. Nevertheless, failure to recover three other MOTUs suggests the loss of gammarid diversity in the lake. This represents,together with the current threats to the lake ecosystem (i.e. climate changes, development of tourism), a clear call for conservation efforts. The speciation events and demographic changes within the flock relate presumably to glacial and postglacial water level changes and to colonisation of new depth ranges and the associated springs.

Sorbitol is a major photosynthate produced in leaves and transported through the phloem of apple (Malus domestica) and other tree fruits in Rosaceae. Sorbitol stimulates its own metabolism, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unknown. Here, we show that sucrose nonfermenting 1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase 1 (SnRK1) is involved in regulating the sorbitol-responsive expression of both SORBITOL DEHYDROGENASE 1 (SDH1) and ALDOSE-6-PHOSPHATE REDUCTASE (A6PR), encoding 2 key enzymes in sorbitol metabolism. SnRK1 expression is increased by feeding of exogenous sorbitol but decreased by sucrose. SnRK1 interacts with and phosphorylates the basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor bZIP39. bZIP39 binds to the promoters of both SDH1 and A6PR and activates their expression. Overexpression of SnRK1 in ‘Royal Gala’ apple increases its protein level and activity, upregulating transcript levels of both SDH1 and A6PR without altering the expression of bZIP39. Of all the sugars tested, sorbitol is the only 1 that stimulates SDH1 and A6PR expression, and this stimulation is blocked by RNA interference (RNAi)-induced repression of either SnRK1 or bZIP39. These findings reveal that sorbitol acts as a signal regulating its own metabolism via SnRK1-mediated phosphorylation of bZIP39, which integrates sorbitol signaling into the SnRK1-mediated sugar signaling network to modulate plant carbohydrate metabolism.

Sulfidic cave ecosystems are remarkable evolutionary hotspots that have witnessed adaptive radiation of their fauna represented by extremophile species having particular traits. Ostracods, a very old group of crustaceans, exhibit specific morphological and ecophysiological features that enable them to thrive in groundwater sulfidic environments. Herein, we report a peculiar new ostracod species Pseudocandonamovilaensis sp. nov. thriving in the chemoautotrophic sulfidic groundwater ecosystem of Movile Cave (Romania). The new species displays a set of homoplastic features specific for unrelated stygobitic species, e.g., triangular carapace in lateral view with reduced postero-dorsal part and simplification of limb chaetotaxy (i.e., loss of some claws and reduction of secondary male sex characteristics), driven by a convergent or parallel evolution during or after colonization of the groundwater realm. P.movilaensis sp. nov. thrives exclusively in sulfidic meso-thermal waters (21 °C) with high concentrations of sulphides, methane, and ammonium. Based on the geometric morphometrics-based study of the carapace shape and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the COI marker (mtDNA), we discuss the phylogenetic relationship and evolutionary implication for the new species to thrive in groundwater sulfidic groundwater environments.

Plant architecture is one of the most important factors that determines crop yield potential and productivity. In apple (Malus), genetic improvement of tree architecture has been challenging due to a long juvenile phase and their growth as complex trees composed of a distinct scion and a rootstock. To better understand the genetic control of apple tree architecture, the dominant weeping growth phenotype was investigated. We report the identification ofMdLAZY1A(MD13G1122400) as the genetic determinant underpinning theWeeping(W)locus that largely controls weeping growth inMalus.MdLAZY1Ais one of the four paralogs in apple that are most closely related toAtLAZY1involved in gravitropism inArabidopsis. The weeping allele (MdLAZY1A-W) contains a single nucleotide mutation c.584T>C that leads to a leucine to proline (L195P) substitution within a predicted transmembrane domain that co-localizes with Region III, one of the five conserved regions in LAZY1-like proteins. Subcellular localization revealed that MdLAZY1A localizes to the plasma membrane and nucleus in plant cells. Over-expressing the weeping allele in apple cultivar Royal Gala (RG) with standard growth habit impaired its gravitropic response and altered the growth to weeping-like. Suppressing the standard allele (MdLAZY1A-S) by RNA interference (RNAi) in RG similarly changed the branch growth direction to downward. Overall, the L195P mutation in MdLAZY1A is genetically causal for weeping growth, underscoring not only the crucial roles of residue L195 and Region III in MdLAZY1A-mediated gravitropic response, but also a potential DNA base editing target for tree architecture improvement inMalusand other crops.

Supplementary Video 1A from In vivo Imaging of Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma Migration to the Skin

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is characterized by the accumulation of malignant CD4+ T cells in the skin. Although the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokine receptors on CTCL cells has been studied extensively on ex vivo isolated cells, very little is known about the dynamics and mechanisms of CTCL trafficking in vivo. However, detailed knowledge of the molecular cues mediating CTCL migration may be used to interfere with their homing to the skin. We made use of real-time intravital epifluorescence video and two-photon microscopy to visualize malignant T cells from Sezary syndrome (SS), a leukemic variant of CTCL, in dermal microvessels in mouse ear skin. We found that SS cells rolled along dermal venules in a P-selectin– and E-selectin–dependent manner at ratios similar to CD4+ memory T cells from normal donors. We furthermore show that the chemokine CCL17/TARC, but not CCL27/CTACK, was sufficient to induce the arrest of SS cells in the microvasculature. However, a combination of both chemokines was required to induce extravasation of SS cells. Together, our experiments delineate the molecular adhesion cascade operant in SS cell homing to the skin in vivo. [Cancer Res 2009;69(7):2704–8]

Previous studies have suggested that parents may support the development of theory of mind (ToM) in their child by talking about mental states (mental state talk; MST). However, MST has not been sufficiently explored in deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs). This study investigated ToM and availability of parental MST in deaf children with CIs (n = 39, Mage = 62.92, SD = 15.23) in comparison with their peers with typical hearing (TH; n = 52, Mage = 52.48, SD = 1.07). MST was measured during shared storybook reading. Parents’ narratives were coded for cognitive, emotional, literal, and non-mental references. ToM was measured with a parental questionnaire. Children with CIs had lower ToM scores than their peers with TH, and their parents used more literal references during shared storybook reading. There were no significant differences in the frequencies of cognitive and emotional references between groups. Parental emotional references contributed positively to children’s ToM scores when controlling for the child’s age and receptive grammar only in the CI group. These results indicated some distinctive features in parents of deaf children with CIs’ MST and highlighted the role of MST in the development of ToM abilities in this group.

There are several mechanisms that allow plants to temporarily escape from top-down control. One of them is trophic cascades triggered by top predators or pathogens. Another is satiation of consumers by mast seeding. These two mechanisms have traditionally been studied in separation. However, their combined action may have a greater effect on plant release than either process alone. In 2015, an outbreak of a disease (African swine fever, ASF) caused a crash in wild boar ( Sus scrofa ) abundance in Białowieża Primeval Forest. Wild boar are important consumers of acorns and are difficult to satiate relative to less mobile granivores. We hypothesized that the joint action of the ASF outbreak and masting would enhance regeneration of oaks ( Quercus robur ). Data from ungulate exclosures demonstrated that ASF led to reduction in acorn predation. Tree seedling data indicated that oak recruitment increased twofold relative to pre-epidemic period. Our results showed that perturbations caused by wildlife disease travel through food webs and influence forest dynamics. The outbreak of ASF acted synergistically with masting and removed herbivore top-down control of oaks by mobile consumers. This illustrates that the ASF epidemic that currently occurs across Europe can have broad effects on forest dynamics.

Based on Roblyer & Edwards (2000: 192), distance learning means “the acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated information and instruction, encompassing all technologies and other forms of learning at a distance.” The instructional delivery includes an instructor who is physically located in a different place from the learner, as well as possibly providing instruction at disparate times. More specifically, the instructor controls the instructional sequencing and pacing and all learners participate in the same learning activities. The aim of the paper is to show the advantages and disadvantages of distance schooling during the Covid-19 lockdown, the emphasis being placed upon among others, the teacher – student relationship, the equipment conditions required for running an English lesson and working online, as well as some “food for thought” in the form of necessary changes and modifications to be introduced, which have been suggested by the sample in question. The respondents constitute 9 teachers from secondary schools, who have replied to an online questionnaire investigating the situation in Polish schools, concerning distance education, specifically teaching a FL. Apart from presenting the current state of affairs, some suggestions for the future are remarked upon.

Artykuł dotyczy sposobów przejawiania się w tekście artystycznym utrwalonych w języku i kulturze intersubiektywnych wyobrażeń o przyrodzie. Bazę materiałową stanowi piosenka Wojciecha Młynarskiego pt. Lubię wrony oraz dwa inne utwory poetyckie wchodzące z nią w relacje o charakterze intertekstualnym: List do KIG z Łodzi W. Młynarskiego i Wierszyk o wronach K.I. Gałczyńskiego. Podstawą metodologiczną opracowania jest teoria skryptów kulturowych, w połączeniu z kognitywnymi koncepcjami obrazowania oraz amalgamatu konceptualnego. Analizy pokazują, w jaki sposób wspólna wiedza kulturowa zostaje przez Młynarskiego poddana artystycznej reinterpretacji w celu wyrażenia własnego patriotyzmu w formie odbiegającej od skonwencjonalizowanych sposobów ekspresji takiej postawy.

Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie historii przemysłu tytoniowego w Bydgoszczy od połowy XIX w. do momentu ustanowienia w 1922 r. Polskiego Monopolu Tytoniowego. W badaniach korzystano z Akt Rejestru Handlowego, Akt miasta Bydgoszczy i Akt budowlanych miasta Bydgoszczy z lat 1850–1925. Informacje archiwalne uzupełniono o dane z prasy codziennej z okresu 1908–1924. Temat ukazano na tle sytuacji politycznej i gospodarczej miasta (do 1920 r. Bydgoszcz była pod zaborem pruskim, a po 1920 r. wróciła w granice państwa polskiego). Działalność zakładów w analizowanym okresie była ważnym elementem gospodarki miejscowej i państwowej.

Prosody, Semantics and Style. On the Hierarchy of Levels of Equivalence in the Translation of Cabaret Songs (Case Study: Polish Versions of Fred Ebb's Money…) The article is a case study and contains a comparative analysis of four variants of the Polish translation of Fred Ebb and John Kander’s song Money… from the musical “Cabaret”. The author of the translation is Wojciech Młynarski, one of the most respected Polish songwriters of the second half of the twentieth century. In the study, an assumption is made that Młynarski, who repeatedly changed versions of his translation, sought to create the most faithful rendition of the songs from the musical for the needs of the Polish stage. His efforts can be observed at four levels of text organization. The translator aimed mainly for sound equivalence, i.e. conformity with the original song in terms of rhythm (word stress), rhyme (consonance) and voice instrumentation and, to a lesser extent, sound imitation. He also cared about pragmatic equivalence by rendering into Polish the original intentions, with particular emphasis on the modes of indirect communication, such as irony and satire. However, other aspects of equivalence remained in the background. Not everywhere the translator managed to keep the cognitive equivalence, i.e. convergence of imagery, by translating scenes and scenarios that were part of cultural knowledge into parallel ones and, more broadly, by trying to evoke similar images in the mind of the reader and listener. His efforts to achieve the effect of broadly understood stylistic equivalence were also noteworthy; only to a small extent they consisted in giving the right stylistic coloring to the individual lexical items which had their English equivalents, and they mainly boiled down to translating stylistic games that did not necessarily cover the same fragments of the song, though were usually based on the same mechanism (a clash between low and high style, absurdity). The analysis shows that the translator adopted tabular rather than linear approach to the original.

BACKGROUND/AIM Antimicrobial peptides are part of the innate immune response, regulate inflammation and initiate acquired immunity. This study focused on theta-defensins that have been shown to have anticancer properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS RTD-2 analogs were synthesized on a peptide synthesizer. Cell viability was estimated using the MTT test. Immunoprecipitation assay was conducted to determine the molecular partner of the [Ser3,7,12,16]-RTD-2 analog. RESULTS Here, we present the biologically active [Ser3,7,12,16]-RTD-2 analog that selectively targets various types of breast cancer cells. Immunoprecipitation protein-protein interaction studies showed eleven proteins common to MDA-MB-231 and T47D cell lines. Taking into account their cellular location, it can be concluded that the synthesized peptide interacts mainly with nuclear proteins, which correlates with the obtained microscopic image. CONCLUSION Proteins that interact strongly with the [Ser3,7,12,16]-RTD-2 analog are closely related to the proteasomal protein degradation pathway. As the activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome system is markedly increased in patients with breast cancer, it is likely that selective modulation of this system may be a useful method for breast cancer treatment.

Inferring over and extracting information from Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on a large corpus of scientific literature can potentially drive a new era in biomedical research, reducing the barriers for accessing existing medical evidence. This work examines the potential of LLMs for dialoguing with biomedical background knowledge, using the context of antibiotic discovery as an exemplar motivational scenario. The context of biomedical discovery from natural products entails understanding the relational evidence between an organism, an associated chemical and its associated antibiotic properties. We provide a systematic assessment on the ability of LLMs to encode and express these relations, verifying for fluency, prompt-alignment, semantic coherence, factual knowledge and specificity of generated responses. The systematic analysis is applied to nine state-of-the-art models (including ChatGPT and GPT-4) in two prompting-based tasks: chemical compound definition generation and chemical compound-fungus relation determination. Results show that while recent models have improved in fluency, factual accuracy is still low and models are biased towards over-represented entities. The ability of LLMs to serve as biomedical knowledge bases is questioned, and the need for additional systematic evaluation frameworks is highlighted. The best performing GPT-4 produced a factual definition for 70% of chemical compounds and 43.6% factual relations to fungi, whereas the best open source model BioGPT-large 30% of the compounds and 30% of the relations for the best-performing prompt. The results show that while LLMs are currently not fit for purpose to be used as biomedical factual knowledge bases, there is a promising emerging property in the direction of factuality as the models become domain specialised, scale-up in size and level of human feedback., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures
