1. FLOOD INUNDATION EXTRACTION BASED ON DECISION-LEVEL DATA FUSION: A CASE IN PERU

Abstract

Every year, millions of people affected and huge property losses by floods were recorded in many parts of the world. Accurately flood inundated areas extraction is essential for disaster reduction. Existed studies have used multi-spectral (MS) data and synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) data or the fusion data to extract flood inundated areas. However, most data fusion methods think less about regional difference and the complementarities between different models. This study explores a new decision-level data fusion method, which pays more attention to the complementarities between models. First, we construct models trained by diverse bands of Sentinel- 1/2 and water indices. Then, divide the whole study area into three parts, cloud-free & non-water area, cloud-free & flood area and cloud area, and select the models suitable for the three areas. Third, combine water extents extracted by selected models with decision tree to obtain water extents before and after disaster. Finally, subtract the water extent before disaster from the water extent after disaster to get flood inundated areas. The experiments in Peru indicated that our method increases the Intersection over Union (IoU) of water extraction to 0.69. Moreover, our method successfully reduces the impact of cloud and shadow owing to the fusion of different features.

Abstract

We present the first catalog of very-high energy and ultra-high energy $\gamma$-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) from March 2021 to September 2022 and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array (KM2A) from January 2020 to September 2022. This catalog represents the most sensitive $E > 1$ TeV gamma-ray survey of the sky covering declination from $-$20$^{\circ}$ to 80$^{\circ}$. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with extended size smaller than $2^\circ$ and with significance of detection at $> 5\sigma$. For each source, we provide its position, extension and spectral characteristics. Furthermore, based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. 3. Hysterectomy and risk of osteoarthritis in women: a nationwide nested case–control study

Abstract

Hysterectomy is the most common gynaecological surgery, performed mainly for benign uterine pathologies in women. Studies have suggested that hysterectomy is associated with osteoarthritis (OA); however, the association remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between hysterectomy and the risk of OA. We performed a population-based nested case–control study using the National Health Insurance programme database from 2000 to 2016 in Taiwan. All medical conditions for each case and control were categorized using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) and ICD-10. A multiple conditional logistic regression model was applied to analyse the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association between hysterectomy and OA. Our analyses included 16 592 patients with OA and 66 368 matched controls. After adjustment for possible confounders, hysterectomy had a significant association with OA (aOR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.09–1.30), especially knee OA (aOR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.13–1.38). Furthermore, women who received oestrogen therapy (ET) alone and patients who underwent hysterectomy without ET showed a greater risk of OA development compared to women who did not receive ET (aOR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.07–1.23, and aOR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.08–1.31, respectively). Our findings indicate that hysterectomy is associated with OA, especially knee OA. We also found that women who received ET alone and patients who underwent hysterectomy without ET had an increased risk of OA.

Abstract

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

Abstract

Background: Recent developments in {\it ab initio} nuclear theory demonstrate promising results in medium- to heavy-mass nuclei. A particular challenge for many of the many-body methodologies, however, is an accurate treatment of the electric-quadrupole, $E2$, strength associated with collectivity. Purpose: In this work we present high-precision $E2$ data for the mirror nuclei $^{23}$Mg and $^{23}$Na for comparison with such theory. We interpret these results in combination with other recent measurements performed by the collaboration and the available literature. Methods: Coulomb-excitation measurements of $^{23}$Mg and $^{23}$Na were performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using the TIGRESS spectrometer and were used to determine the $E2$ matrix elements of mixed $E2$/$M1$ transitions. Results: $E2$ transition strengths were extracted for $^{23}$Mg and $^{23}$Na. Transition strength ($B(E2)$) precision was improved by factors of approximately six for both isotopes, while agreeing within uncertainties with previous measurements. Conclusions: A comparison was made with both shell-model and {\it ab initio} valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations. Valence-Space In-Medium Similarity-Renormalization-Group calculations were found to underpredict the absolute $E2$ strength - in agreement with previous results - but a full analysis of $sd$-shell nuclei found no indication of an isovector component to the missing strength. Comparison with full configuration interaction and coupled cluster calculations in the case of $^{14}$C indicates that correlated multi-particle multi-hole excitations are essential to the reproduction of quadrupole excitation amplitudes., To be submitted to Physical Review C

Abstract

A correlation between the secondary cosmic ray flux and the near-earth electric field intensity, measured during thunderstorms, has been found by analyzing the data of the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage air shower array located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China). The counting rates of showers with different particle multiplicities, have been found to be strongly dependent upon the intensity and polarity of the electric field measured during the course of 15 thunderstorms. In negative electric fields (i.e. accelerating negative charges downwards), the counting rates increase with increasing electric field strength. In positive fields, the rates decrease with field intensity until a certain value of the field EFmin (whose value depends on the event multiplicity), above which the rates begin increasing. By using Monte Carlo simulations, we found that this peculiar behavior can be well described by the presence of an electric field in a layer of thickness of a few hundred meters in the atmosphere above the detector, which accelerates/decelerates the secondary shower particles of opposite charge, modifying the number of particles with energy exceeding the detector threshold. These results, for the first time, give a consistent explanation for the origin of the variation of the electron/positron flux observed for decades by high altitude cosmic ray detectors during thunderstorms., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

The $T_z$~=~$-\frac{3}{2}$ nucleus ${}^{21}$Mg has been studied by Coulomb excitation on ${}^{196}$Pt and ${}^{110}$Pd targets. A 205.6(1)-keV $\gamma$-ray transition resulting from the Coulomb excitation of the $\frac{5}{2}^+$ ground state to the first excited $\frac{1}{2}^+$ state in ${}^{21}$Mg was observed for the first time. Coulomb excitation cross-section measurements with both targets and a measurement of the half-life of the $\frac{1}{2}^+$ state yield an adopted value of $B(E2;\frac{5}{2}^+\rightarrow\frac{1}{2}^+)$~=~13.3(4)~W.u. A new excited state at 1672(1)~keV with tentative $\frac{9}{2}^+$ assignment was also identified in ${}^{21}$Mg. This work demonstrates large difference of the $B(E2;\frac{5}{2}^+\rightarrow\frac{1}{2}^+)$ values between $T$~=~$\frac{3}{2}$, $A$~=~21 mirror nuclei. The difference is investigated in the shell-model framework employing both isospin conserving and breaking USD interactions and using modern \textsl{ab initio} nuclear structure calculations, which have recently become applicable in the $sd$ shell., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ detector, located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China), was a full coverage air shower array dedicated to gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray studies. The wide field of view (~ 2 sr) and high duty cycle (> 86%), made ARGO-YBJ suitable to search for short and unexpected gamma ray emissions like gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Between 2007 November 6 and 2013 February 7, 156 satellite-triggered GRBs (24 of them with known redshift) occurred within the ARGO-YBJ field of view. A search for possible emission associated to these GRBs has been made in the two energy ranges 10-100 GeV and 10-1000 GeV. No significant excess has been found in time coincidence with the satellite detections nor in a time window of one hour after the bursts. Taking into account the EBL absorption, upper limits to the energy fluence at 99% of confidence level have been evaluated,with values ranging from ~ 10-5 erg cm-2 to ~10-1 erg cm-2., 24pages and 12 figures

Abstract

As one of the brightest active blazars in both X-ray and very high energy $\gamma$-ray bands, Mrk 501 is very useful for physics associated with jets from AGNs. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is monitoring it for $\gamma$-rays above 0.3 TeV since November 2007. Starting from October 2011 the largest flare since 2005 is observed, which lasts to about April 2012. In this paper, a detailed analysis is reported. During the brightest $\gamma$-rays flaring episodes from October 17 to November 22, 2011, an excess of the event rate over 6 $\sigma$ is detected by ARGO-YBJ in the direction of Mrk 501, corresponding to an increase of the $\gamma$-ray flux above 1 TeV by a factor of 6.6$\pm$2.2 from its steady emission. In particular, the $\gamma$-ray flux above 8 TeV is detected with a significance better than 4 $\sigma$. Based on time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) processes, the broad-band energy spectrum is interpreted as the emission from an electron energy distribution parameterized with a single power-law function with an exponential cutoff at its high energy end. The average spectral energy distribution for the steady emission is well described by this simple one-zone SSC model. However, the detection of $\gamma$-rays above 8 TeV during the flare challenges this model due to the hardness of the spectra. Abstract

The 685 keV excitation energy of the first excited 0+ state in 152Sm makes it an attractive candidate to explore expected two-phonon excitations at low energy. Multiple-step Coulomb excitation and inelastic neutron scattering studies of 152Sm are used to probe the E2 collectivity of excited 0+ states in this "soft" nucleus and the results are compared with model predictions. No candidates for two-phonon K=0+ quadrupole vibrational states are found. Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is a full-coverage air shower detector located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Observatory (Tibet, People's Republic of China, 4300 m a.s.l.). The high altitude, combined with the full-coverage technique, allows the detection of extensive air showers in a wide energy range and offer the possibility of measuring the cosmic ray proton plus helium spectrum down to the TeV region, where direct balloon/space-borne measurements are available. The detector has been in stable data taking in its full configuration from November 2007 to February 2013. In this paper the measurement of the cosmic ray proton plus helium energy spectrum is presented in the region 3-300 TeV by analyzing the full collected data sample. The resulting spectral index is $\gamma = -2.64 \pm 0.01$. These results demonstrate the possibility of performing an accurate measurement of the spectrum of light elements with a ground based air shower detector., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, preprint submitted to Phys. Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array that has been used to monitor the northern $\gamma$-ray sky at energies above 0.3 TeV from 2007 November to 2013 January. In this paper, we present the results of a sky survey in the declination band from $-10^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$, using data recorded over the past five years. With an integrated sensitivity ranging from 0.24 to $\sim$1 Crab units depending on the declination, six sources have been detected with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. Several excesses are also reported as potential $\gamma$-ray emitters. The features of each source are presented and discussed.
