Spontaneous haemoperitoneum is a rare condition with a variety of aetiologies. Regardless of the cause, it is invariably a life-threatening condition that requires urgent diagnosis and management. The most common causes of spontaneous haemoperitoneum include gynaecological, hepatic, splenic and vascular causes. However, here, we present a rare case of spontaneous haemoperitoneum secondary to idiopathic omental venous malformation.Our patient presented with acute onset of right iliac fossa pain, and a CT scan revealed a massive haemoperitoneum. A laparoscopic converted to open laparotomy was performed to diagnose and treat the patient. We discuss the management approach for such patients with spontaneous haemoperitoneum.

Experiments and observations suggest that they contribute to terrestrial soil biodiversity and function, yet their ecological contribution to soil has never been assessed globally under natural conditions. Here we conducted the most comprehensive global standardized field study to quantify how soil mosses influence 8 ecosystem services associated with 24 soil biodiversity and functional attributes across wide environmental gradients from all continents. We found that soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low. Globally, soil mosses potentially support 6.43 Gt more carbon in the soil layer than do bare soils. The amount of soil carbon associated with mosses is up to six times the annual global carbon emissions from any altered land use globally. The largest positive contribution of mosses to soils occurs under a high cover of mat and turf mosses, in less-productive ecosystems and on sandy and salty soils. A toddler presented with melaena on a background of a possible enteric duplication cyst, diagnosed in the neonatal period which ‘vanished’. What was later confirmed to be a small bowel duplication cyst was not seen on follow-up ultrasounds and thus the patient was managed expectantly until presentation as an emergency. Our case highlights the challenges faced in managing cystic abdominal structures in infancy and the potential consequences of expectant management. We discuss whether cross-sectional imaging or diagnostic laparoscopy should be advocated when duplications cysts are considered amongst the differentials of a lesion on ultrasound.

Abstract:: β-Nicotinamide mononucleotide (β-NMN), a key precursor in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) in mammals, has significant effects in replenishing NAD+ levels in the body, so it has obvious ameliorative effects on metabolic and age-related degenerative diseases. β-NMN is widely used in healthcare products, food, and cosmetics. It has considerable commercial worth and promising medical application prospects. Hence, the development of methods for preparing β-NMN is of great research significance. This review summarized and analyzed recent developments in the chemical synthesis of β-NMN from various starting materials, which could provide helpful references for the investigation of new synthetic techniques for β-NMN and encourage its further development and large-scale application.

Background: As a new high-resolution three-dimensional CT imaging technology, the essential reference range of CT values in Cone-beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT) has not been established to date. Purpose: To determine the reference range of computed tomography (CT) values in CBBCT for clinical breast examination. Materials and Methods: In total, 913 cases (1167 lateral) were subject to CBBCT. CT values of the glandular tissue, fat and different quadrants and different distances of CBBCT images were analyzed. The nipple and muscle were also evaluated. Results: A total of 672 lateral breasts were included in the normal group for investigation. The reference range of the absolute CT value of the chest wall muscle is -136.68~43.36 HU. The reference range of the absolute CT value of the nipple is 176.39~334.02 HU. The reference range of the absolute CT value of fat is -190.4~-63.67HU, and of glandular tissue is -12.2~51.83HU. Conclusion: Our results firstly established the baseline CT values of Non-contrast CBBCT in female breasts, which will benefit cancer screening and lesion locating. The closer the normal breast fat and glandular tissue is to the nipple, the greater the CT value. The older the age, the lower the density. The CT values of fat are unstable in a distance of less than 5 cm, and the CT values of glandular tissues are relatively stable. The difference between the upper and lower quadrants is significant in the same lateral breast and the same section.

Background: The development of nanogels has become an attractive strategy to enhance the antibacterial activity performance of bacteria. Methods: The ciprofloxacin composite nanogels were successfully prepared by electrostatic interaction between gelatin (positive charge) and CMC (negative charge) with the help of sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as ionic crosslinkers, to increase the antibacterial activity of ciprofloxacin against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) mastitis infection. The formulation screening, characterization, in vitro release, antibacterial activity, and biosafety were studied. Results: The optimized formulation was fabricated of 20 mg/mL (CMC) and 50mg/mL (gelatin). The optimized ciprofloxacin composite nanogels were homogenous canary yellow suspension with a sedimentation rate of 1 and were incorporated in nano-sized cross-linked polymeric networks. The particle sizes were distributed as, 402.7±1.3 nm, PDI of 0.12±0.01, ZP of -24.5±0.2mv, EE of 74.28%±0.03%, LC of 20.5%±0.05%. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that ciprofloxacin might be incorporated in nano-sized cross-linked polymeric networks. Fourier transform infrared showed that the spontaneous electrostatic interactions between CMC and gelatin produce the network structure and form the composite nanogels. Meanwhile, in vitro release study showed that ciprofloxacin composite nanogels had sustained-release performances. The ciprofloxacin composite nanogels had shown better antibacterial activity against SCV 102 isolate than S. aureus ATCC 29213 and S. aureus 101isolates. The biosafety studies suggested the great promise of the injectable ciprofloxacin composite nanogels as a biocompatible breast injection. Conclusion: This study will afford a potential approach for developing injectable ciprofloxacin-loaded gelatin-CMC composite nanogels for cow S. aureus mastitis therapy.

Here we conducted a standardized survey of urban greenspaces from 56 municipalities across six continents, aiming to investigate the relationships of plant and soil biodiversity (diversity of bacteria, fungi, protists and invertebrates, and metagenomics-based functional diversity) with 18 surrogates of ecosystem functions from nine ecosystem services. We found that soil biodiversity across biomes was significantly and positively correlated with multiple dimensions of ecosystem functions, and contributed to key ecosystem services such as microbially driven carbon pools, organic matter decomposition, plant productivity, nutrient cycling, water regulation, plant–soil mutualism, plant pathogen control and antibiotic resistance regulation. Plant diversity only indirectly influenced multifunctionality in urban greenspaces via changes in soil conditions that were associated with soil biodiversity. These findings were maintained after controlling for climate, spatial context, soil properties, vegetation and management practices. Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Dysregulation of lncRNAs leads to NSCLC progression. Objective: This study aims to explore the regulatory mechanism of lncRNA LINC01234 in NSCLC. Materials and Methods: LINC01234 expression in NSCLC cells was determined. Cell proliferation was detected using CCK-8, colony formation, and EDU assays after transfection of siRNA LINC01234 into H1299 cells and transfection of pcDNA3.1-LINC01234 into H1975 cells. Subcellular localization of LINC01234 was predicted and the binding relations between LINC01234 and miR-433-3p as well as miR-433-3p and GRB2 were verified. The expression levels of miR-433-3p and GRB2 in NSCLC cells were determined. Joint experiments of miR-433-3p inhibitor + si- LINC01234-1 or oe-GRB2 + si-LINC01234-1 were conducted to verify the role of miR-433-3p and GRB2 in NSCLC cell malignant proliferation. Results: LINC01234 was abundantly expressed in NSCLC cells. LINC01234 silencing reduced NSCLC cell proliferation while LINC01234 overexpression enhanced cell proliferation. LINC01234 competitively bound to miR-433-3p and miR-433-3p directly targeted GRB2. miR- 433-3p knockdown or GRB2 overexpression counteracted the repressive effect of LINC01234 silencing on NSCLC cell malignant proliferation. Conclusion: LINC01234 competitively bound to miR-433-3p and promoted GRB2 transcription to augment NSCLC cell malignant proliferation.

Objective: The present study aimed to improve the diagnosis and treatment outcome of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea caused by patent meningoencephalocele of Sternberg’s canal of the sphenoid sinus by analyzing the clinical data and imaging features of two rare cases of this disease and by reviewing the relevant literature for possible etiology, diagnoses, and treatments. Methods: Together with the relevant literature, we retrospectively studied the clinical and imaging data of two patients (mother and child) with CSF rhinorrhea caused by patent meningoencephalocele of Sternberg’s canal of the sphenoid sinus, analyzed their diagnostic and treatment procedures, and proposed a potential, feasible treatment method. Results: On the 2nd day after surgery, the expansive sponge and iodoform gauze in the nasal cavity were removed in both patients, and the lumbar subarachnoid drainage was removed 3 days after the operation, as no nasal discharge was observed. One week after the operation, head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that the abnormal tissue in the sphenoid sinus had disappeared, and no accumulation of the CSF was observed. Both patients were discharged after 2 weeks. At the time of discharge, both patients were without nasal drip, fever, headache, and other discomforts, and they had grade 5 muscle strength in their extremities, with normal muscle tension. Conclusion: CSF rhinorrhea is usually caused by secondary factors. Spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea caused by encephalocele of the skull base due to congenital dysplasia of the skull base is very rare and easily misdiagnosed. The presence of brain tissue or CSF signal in the sphenoid sinus on preoperative MR images is an important imaging feature of the disease. Conditional cisternography can be used to further detect CSF leaks. Endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal repair of CSF leaks combined with short-term postoperative lumbar subarachnoid drainage is an effective treatment method. According to previous literature, the possible causes of meningoencephalocele with patent Sternberg’s canal of the sphenoid sinus include abnormal development of the sphenoid sinus or the craniopharyngeal canal and bone defects of the skull base. There are no related reports on patent meningoencephalocele caused by Sternberg’s canal in direct blood relatives, such as mother-son; therefore, the possibility of this disease having a genetic origin should be considered in future studies on its pathophysiological mechanisms.

Palmprint recognition is a technology that uses the unique composite texture information of the palm surface for automatic identification. In this chapter, first, the main research contents of touchless palmprint recognition are introduced. Second, the establishment of the CUHKSZ large-scale touchless palmprint dataset will be described in detail. Third, parameter optimization experiments are conducted on the CUHKSZ dataset to observe the scientific problems caused by the increase in data scale. Fourth, the experiment comparing the EER of the most used touchless palmprint recognition algorithms on the large-scale dataset will be performed to provide baselines for future research. Finally, the recognition performances of the three most widely used biometric modals, including palmprint, face, and fingerprint, will be compared on the CUHKSZ dataset, which can demonstrate the advantages of touchless palmprint recognition. In the end of this chapter, future research directions will be put forward.

Dramatic nuclear reorganization occurs during early development to convert terminally differentiated gametes to a totipotent zygote, which then gives rise to an embryo. Aberrant epigenome resetting severely impairs embryo development and even leads to lethality. How the epigenomes are inherited, reprogrammed, and reestablished in this critical developmental period has gradually been unveiled through the rapid development of technologies including ultrasensitive chromatin analysis methods. In this review, we summarize the latest findings on epigenetic reprogramming in gametogenesis and embryogenesis, and how it contributes to gamete maturation and parental-to-zygotic transition. Finally, we highlight the key questions that remain to be answered to fully understand chromatin regulation and nuclear reprogramming in early development.

Three-dimensional (3D) conductive frameworks have been studied extensively in lithium (Li) metal anodes for their good electronic conductivities and superior structural integrity. In this work, we demonstrated a carbon fiber cloth (CFC) framework coated with SnO2 nanoparticles through a hydrothermal process combined with a carbonization method, which served as a reliable host for pouring molten Li to produce a CFC@SnO2@Li composite anode with dendritic suppression and long-life cycling performances. XRD, TEM, HRTEM, XPS and different electrochemical characterizations were carried out. Compared with the routine bare Li||LiFePO4 cells, the CFC@SnO2@Li||LiFePO4 cells had a strong specific ability, excellent rate performance, and stability for a long time, which confirm its great potential as lithium metal anodes in practical battery applications.
