Upon the passing of years and ages, human heritage naturally becomes more rich and complex. Contemporary nations, in particular, have a strong desire to preserve their identity in terms of their individual heritage as well as their national contribution to overall mankind history and culture. Beside movable pieces of art like paintings, sculptures and other artifacts, architectonic, and urbanistic substance should be intensively preserved. Historic houses, town districts, whole urbanistic arrangements, castles, and other military objects are of interest to conservators and restorers. All such historic architectonic objects are made of apparently durable materials like ceramic bricks, stone of different type (marble, sandstone, granite, limestone, and other), or also wood. Because of aging, these materials are subjected to a natural decay beside wars and natural disasters. Natural deterioration is nowadays intensively accelerated by the so-called civilization factors of increasing air pollution and climate change. Architectonic heritage conservation and preservation are organized, controlled, and advised by state administration and international organizations. In this contribution general rules of historic substance protection will be presented along with the most spectacular examples of completed conservation works. Protection of an original historic image of contemporary cities is an important part of a sustainable society and economy. Properly protected historic architectonic substances can reinforce the identity of the citizenry, and they have well-defined economic value. Many of contemporary cities build their economic prosperity on tourism, which may be regarded as one of most desirable forms of economy provided it is properly organized and controlled.
