Abstract

The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length lambda_abs and an effective scattering length lambda_sct^eff. The values for blue (UV) light are found to be lambda_abs ~ 60(26) m, lambda_sct^eff ~ 265(122) m, with significant (15%) time variability. Finally, the results of ANTARES simulations showing the effect of these water properties on the anticipated performance of the detector are presented., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures (including 4 available as separate figures), to be published in Astroparticle Physics

6. Joint ray plus Born least-squares migration and simulated annealing optimization for target-oriented quantitative seismic imaging

Abstract

A seismic processing workflow based on iterative ray + Born migration/inversion and target-oriented postprocessing of the migrated image is developed for fine-scale quantitative characterization of reflectors. The first step of the workflow involves linear iterations of the ray + Born migration/inversion. The output of the first step is a true-amplitude migrated image parameterized by velocity perturbations. In a second step, postprocessing of the migrated image is performed through a random search with a very-fast simulated annealing (VFSA) algorithm. The forward problem of the global optimization is a simple convolutional model that linearly relates a vertical profile of the band-limited migrated image after depth-to-time conversion to a 1D velocity model composed of a stack of homogeneous layers of arbitrary velocity and thickness. The aim of the postprocessing is to eliminate the limited bandwidth effects of the source from the migrated image for resolution improvement and enhanced geological interpretation of selected targets. The global optimization approach allows for uncertainty analysis required by the intrinsic nonuniqueness of the velocity model output by the postprocessing. The relevance of the convolutional model when applied to the output of the ray + Born migrated inversion is first illustrated with a one-layer model. The accuracy and the robustness of the workflow to image geologically complicated models are then illustrated with an application to the synthetic Marmousi model. Some practical issues (e. g., the source wavelet estimate and the scaling of the migrated image required by the VFSA optimization) are discussed with an application to a 2D real seismic multichannel reflection data set collected in the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador). The postprocessing is applied to derive the fine-scale velocity structure of a decollement zone on top of the subduction channel. The postprocessing allows for mapping structural variations along different segments of the decollement, which can be associated with changes in fluid content and porosity.

Abstract

The channelling efficiency of the deep ocean sound channel (often referred as SOFAR channel) allows long range propagation of acoustic waves over a few thousands kilometres. Consequently, strong T-waves, referred to a third arrival on seismic waves, are commonly observed on both underwater and coastal receivers, when an oceanic earthquake or an underwater explosion occurs, even for small events. Many insights could be provided by these records, once they could be interpreted. To analyse these signals, the authors propose a new hybrid numerical scheme, combining in a single approach two powerful techniques, a ray tracing method completed by the Maslov summation and a finite difference scheme, which allows the authors to model T-wave underwater propagation and complex interactions with obstacles. In their modelling, before the T-waves arrive in front of an obstacle such as a continental shelf, an island shore or a seamount, the propagation is resumed on a vertical artificial boundary and the acoustic wave field is considered as the input for a finite difference method. An experiment released in the South Pacific and its modelling illustrates the key role played on the envelope shape of T-waves by the source depth, the SOFAR channel propagation, the bathymetry of the continental slope and the continental geological structure. Their approach gives a straightforward interpretation of the SOFAR channel propagation and may provide a phase identification, as well as a source characterization capability. A time domain study of the recorded data on seismic station (or on a hydrophone) may give an evaluation of the charge weight of an underwater explosion. Therefore, this technique is particularly relevant for monitoring the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in oceans.

Abstract

A multidisciplinary project for the investigation of Mt. Vesuvius structure was started in 1993. The core of the project is represented by a high resolution seismic tomography study by using controlled and natural sources. The main research objective is to investigate the feeding system of the volcano and to retrieve details of the upper crustal structure in the area. A first 2D active seismic experiment was performed in May 1994, with the aim of studing the feasibility of using tomographic techniques for exploring the volcano interiors. Particularly, this experiment was designed to obtain information on the optimal sources-receivers configuration and on the depth extension of the volume sampled by shot-generated seismic waves. 66 three-component seismic stations and 16 single-component analogue instruments were installed by several Italian and French groups to record signals generated by three on-land, underground explosions. Sources and geophones were deployed along a 30-km NW-SE profile passing through the volcano crater. Receivers were placed at an average spacing of 250 m in the middle of the recording line and at 500 m outside. The arrival time data base was complemented by first P and S readings of microearthquakes which occurred in the recent past within the volcano. The first arrival data set was preliminarily used to determine the shallow structure of the volcano by applying Thurber's (1983) tomographic inversion technique. This analysis shows evidence for a high-velocity body which extends vertically from about 400 m below the crater down to at least 3000 m and for a shallow 300-500 m thick low-velocity cover which borders the edifice. Data from the distant shot show evidence for arrivals of deep reflected/converted phases and provide information on the deeper structure under the volcano. The results from the interpretation of 2D data are used for planning a 3D tomographic survey which will be carried out in 1996.

Abstract

—We applied a revised version of the 1-D τ–p inversion method to first P-arrival times from the active seismic experiment performed at Mt. Vesuvius (southern Italy) in 1996 (TomoVes96 Project). The main objective of this work is to obtain 1-D velocity models of Mt. Somma-Vesuvius volcano complex and surrounding area. Moreover we show that combining the 1-D information we provide a reliable 2-D initial model for perturbative tomographic inversions. Seismic and geological surveys suggest the presence of a refractor associated with the contrast between carbonate basement and volcanic/alluvial sediments; synthetic simulations, using a realistic topography and carbonate top morphology, allowed us to study the effect of topography on the retrieved velocity models and to check that the 1-D τ–p method can also approximately retrieve the refractor depth and velocity contrast. We analysed data from 14 on-land shots recorded at stations deployed along the in-profile direction. We grouped the obtained models in three subsets according to the geology of the sampling area: Models for carbonate outcrop area, models for the Campanian Plain surrounding the volcano edifice and models for Mt. Somma-Vesuvius volcano complex. The found 1-D P-velocity models show important vertical and lateral variations. Very low velocities (1.5–2.5 km/s) are observed in the upper 200–500 m thick shallow layer. At greater depths (3 km is the maximum investigated depth) P velocities increase to values in the range of 4–6 km/s which are related to the presence of the carbonatic basement. Finally we interpolated the 1-D models to demonstrate an example of misfit for a 2-D interpolated model whose residuals are confined in a narrow band around zero.
