Abstract

In response to the sustainability issues that agriculture faces in advanced economies, agroecology has gained increasing relevance in scientific, political, and social debates. This has promoted discussion about transitions to agroecology, which represents a significant advancement. Accordingly, it has become a growing field of research. We reviewed the literature on and in support of farm transitions to agroecology in advanced economies in order to identify key research challenges and suggest innovative research paths. Our findings can be summarized as follows: (1) Research that supports exploration and definition of desired futures, whether based on future-oriented modeling or expert-based foresight approaches, should more explicitly include the farm level. It should stimulate the creativity and design ability of farmers and other stakeholders, and also address issues of representation and power among them. (2) Research that creates awareness and assesses farms before, during or after transition requires more holistic and dynamic assessment frameworks. These frameworks need to be more flexible to adapt to the diversity of global and local challenges. Their assessment should explicitly include uncertainty due to the feedback loops and emergent properties of transitions. (3) Research that analyzes and supports farms during transition should focus more on the dynamics of change processes by valuing what happens on the farms. Research should especially give more credence to on-farm experiments conducted by farmers and develop new tools and methods (e.g., for strategic monitoring) to support these transitions. This is the first review of scientific studies of farm transitions to agroecology. Overall, the review indicates that these transitions challenge the system boundaries, temporal horizons, and sustainability dimensions that agricultural researchers usually consider. In this context, farm transitions to agroecology require changes in the current organization and funding of research in order to encourage longer term and more adaptive configurations.

Abstract

International audience; In life cycle assessment (LCA), simple models are currently used to estimate cropping system nitrogen (N) emissions on farms. At large spatial scales (e.g., countries), these models are valid. At a smaller spatial scale (e.g., territories), these models may be less accurate, since they completely or partially ignore local conditions such as management practices, soil or climate. The purpose of this study was to consider the variability of those factors when estimating N emissions in LCA at the watershed scale. To this end, Syst’N, decision-support software based on a simulation model of crop and soil N dynamics at field and crop-rotation scales, was applied to predict N emissions from cropping systems in a coastal watershed (Lieue de Grève, France). Syst’N predictions were compared to N emissions estimated by AGRIBALYSE, a static site-dependent method at field and single-crop scales. Syst’N was more sensitive to site-specific soil properties than AGRIBALYSE. Estimates of N emissions that include spatial variability in soil and climate therefore become possible in LCA when a simulation model such as Syst’N is used in the inventory phase.

Abstract

The impacts of tillage and organic fertilization on soil organic matter (SOM) are highly variable and still unpredictable, and their interactions need to be investigated under various soil, climate and cropping system conditions. Our work examined the effect of reduced tillage and animal manure on SOM stocks and quality in the 0―40 cm layer of a loamy soil under mixed cropping system and humid temperate climate. The soil organic carbon (SOC) and N stocks, particulate organic matter (POM), and C and N mineralization potential (301 days at 15 °C) were measured in a 8-yr-old split-plot field trial, including three tillage treatments [mouldboard ploughing (MP), shallow tillage (ST), no tillage (NT)] and two fertilization treatments [mineral (M), poultry manure 2.2 t/ha/yr C (O)]. No statistically significant interactive effects of tillage and fertilization were measured except on C mineralization. NT and ST showed greater SOC stocks (41.2 and 39.7 t/ha C) than MP (37.1 t/ha C) in the 0-15 cm increment, while no statistical differences were observed at a greater depth. N stocks exhibited similar distribution patterns with regard to tillage effect. Animal manure, applied at a rate representative of typical field application rates, had a smaller impact on SOC and N stocks than tillage. The mean SOC and N stocks were higher under O than M, but the differences were statistically significant only in the 0―5 cm increment. MP showed lower C-POM stocks than NT and ST in the 0-5 cm increment, whereas greater C-POM stocks were measured under MP than under NT or under ST in the 20-25 cm increment. Organic fertilization had no impact on C-POM or N-POM stocks. In the 0-25 cm increment, NT showed a lower C and N mineralization potential than MP. Our work shows that the sensitivity of SOM to reduced tillage for the whole soil profile can be relatively small in a loamy soil, under humid-temperate climate. However, POM was particularly sensitive to the differential effects of tillage practices with depth, and indicative of differentiation in total SOM distribution in the soil profile.

Abstract

Both dilute and concentrated vinasse can be spread on agricultural fields or used as organic fertilizer. The effects of different characteristics of the original raw material on the biochemical composition of vinasse and their C and N mineralization in soil were investigated. Vinasse samples were obtained from similar industrial fermentation processes based on the growth of microorganisms on molasses from different raw material (sugar beet or sugar cane) and vinasse concentration (dilute or concentrated). The nature of the raw material used for fermentation had the greatest effect on the nature and size of the resistant organic pool. This fraction included aromatic compounds originating from the raw material or from complex molecules and seemed to be quantitatively related to acid-insoluble N. Samples derived from sugar beet were richer in N compounds and induced greater net N mineralization. The effect of evaporation varied with the nature of the raw material. Concentration led to a slight increase in the abundance of phenolic compounds, acid-insoluble fraction, and a slight decrease in the labile fraction of vinasses partly or totally derived from sugar beet. The effect of the dilute vinasse from sugar cane was greater. The concentrated vinasse had a smaller labile fraction, induced N immobilization at the beginning of incubation, and exhibited greater N concentration in the acid-insoluble fraction than the dilute vinasse.

Abstract

Models are useful tools to evaluate environmental impacts associated with nitrogen management in cropping systems and to predict them correctly. The purpose of this chapter was to analyze whether existing models satisfactorily simulate N losses in agroecosystems, require input data that are accessible, and can incorporate agricultural and climatic changes. The literature on 62 nitrogen models was reviewed. Each model was analyzed to identify the processes simulated, the equations used, the time and space scales, the input data and their degree of accessibility, and finally its performance. The review showed that a wide range of formalisms have been developed to model N processes. N losses such as nitrate leaching give better performance than N gas emissions, underlining the need to improve the understanding and modeling of denitrification and volatilization. It also revealed the narrow range of crop families parameterized and validated with field measurements. The main trend in modeling over the last 15 years has been the shift from mechanistic models to functional models, with a simplification of the equations involved and an aggregation of modules according to specific objectives. The more recent models have thus generally been based on specific contexts and cannot be directly extrapolated to other pedoclimatic and crop contexts, yet this is necessary for evaluating scenarios involving changes in land use and management or climatic uncertainties.

Abstract

International audience; Les sols remplissent des services écosystémiques indispensables à la vie humaine parmi lesquels celui d’approvisionnement en aliments et de régulation, par le stockage, la transformation et le transfert, de l’eau et des éléments tels que le carbone, l’azote, etc.. La matière organique est un élément déterminant du maintien de ces services de par son incidence sur la structure physique des sols, leurs caractéristiques chimiques et leur activité biologique. De fait, si le retour au sol de la matière organique issue du compostage des déchets et des produits résiduaires organiques est une pratique ancestrale, son intérêt ressurgit aujourd’hui face aux défis démographiques, alimentaires, climatiques et sociétaux auxquels nous sommes confrontés. L’un des intérêts du procédé, et non des moindres, réside également dans sa robustesse et sa rusticité. Pour autant, des points de vigilance demeurent tant côté impacts du procédé que côté qualité des composts. Cet ouvrage fait le point sur les avancées scientifiques et techniques effectuées ces dernières années dans le domaine du compostage et des composts. Élaboré en quatre parties, il traite tour à tour : des processus, des effets et des déterminants des procédés par aération forcée (Partie 1), des intérêts écologiques et agronomiques des composts (Partie 2), des risques sanitaires et environnementaux associés au procédé et à l’apport au sol de composts ( Partie 3). La quatrième partie est dédiée à une approche substrat de la filière ainsi qu’à une revue des modalités d’usage des composts en agriculture classique et biologique.
