Results of a search for prompt neutrinos in a beam-dump experiment with 70 GeV protons are reported. The observed rate is ν pr / π = (2.7 ± 2.2) × 10 −5 for mean neutrino energy 〈 E ν 〉 ≈ 5 GeV. An estimation on charmed meson production as a possible source of prompt neutrinos is given. Production rate of the axion relative to π 0 mesons is found to be less than 6 × 10 −9 (95% C . L .).
