Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor inducing development of phosphopenic osteomalacia is manifested as deformations and multiple fractures of the bones which decreases patients’ quality of life and leads to disability. Insufficient awareness about this pathology among doctors and absence of symptoms allowing its diagnosis cause late diagnosis of the disease despite application of up-to-date high-tech diagnostic methods. The optimal treatment of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors is radical resection. However, strong connection of the tumor with the surrounding tissues and, in many cases, absence of a capsule or sclerosis (if located in the bones) complicate surgery leading to high recurrence rate. Radical resection of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors is especially complicated in cases of localization in complex anatomical areas of the lower limbs.The disease is characterized by long timespan between first clinical signs, diagnosis, and start of treatment (sometimes, several years). Diagnosis confirmation and visualization of the details of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor requires magnetic resonance imaging. This method allows to examine connection between the tumor and surrounding tissues and the presence of a capsule. Magnetic resonance imaging also allows to accurately determine the area of surgical intervention. Radical tumor resection leads to normalization of blood and urine biochemistry in the span of several weeks. Restoration of bone density and muscle function requires 3–6 months after the operation.

A new Sc-bearing variety of tusionite has been found in the Eastern Pamirs, in the near-miarolitic Dorozhny granite pegmatite complex at the Kukurt pegmatite field (left bank of the Kukurt River, 45 km east of the settlement of Murghab, Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, Tajikistan). Miarolitic pegmatites are related to the alpine leucocratic granites of the Shatput intrusive complex and occur in rocks of the Sarydzhilga Formation (PR3?) metamorphosed under amphibolite and epidote–amphibolite facies. Tusionite occurs in association with quartz, K-feldspar, albite, elbaite, Sc-bearing spessartine (up to 0.2 wt % Sc2O3) and accessory fluorapatite, Y-bearing fluorite, Sn-bearing titanite, magnetite, polycrase-(Y), B-rich gadolinite-(Y), ixiolite, manganocolumbite, pyrochlore, chernovite-(Y), cassiterite, varlamoffite, lepidolite, and Hf-rich zircon (up to 17.0 wt % HfO2). Tusionite forms thin lamellae (0.05–0.25 mm) and fanlike aggregates. It is yellow and transparent with a vitreous luster. It has weak pleochroism, No (orange–yellow) > Ne (light yellow). It is a uniaxial negative mineral, no = 1.870(5), ne = 1.760(3). The Raman spectrum has been reported for tusionite for the first time (laser excitation 532 nm); main bands: 228, 305, 379, 466, 661, 733, 750, 942, 1218, and 1458 cm–1. Its X-ray diffraction pattern is similar to tusionite from the Southwestern Pamirs. Hexagonal unit cell parameters: a = 4.772(3), c = 15.28(3) A. Chemical composition (electron microprobe, wt %, average of 14 analyses): 0.06 (0.00–0.31) Ta2O5; 50.28 (49.43–51.03) SnO2; 0.02 (0.00–0.19) TiO2; 1.02 (0.62–1.53) Sc2O3; 0.03 (0.00–0.19) CaO; 0.21 (0.16–0.46) FeO; 24.06 (23.59–24.34) MnO; 24.51 (calc. 23.90) B2O3; total 99.62 (99.08–100.79). The substitution mechanism involving Sc is not clear. Substitution of Sc+3 for Sn+4 with partial replacement of Mn+2 by Mn+3 is possible; however, Sc negatively correlates not only with Sn, but also with (Fe + Mn), which may result from the location of Sc in both octahedral positions with Sn+4 and Mn+2.

Surgical treatment of patients with tumoral defeat of pelvic bones, of preacetabular region, in particular, is one of the most challenging topics of modern oncorthopedics. Currently, one of the most modern methods of reconstruction of the pelvic bones is the use of modular endoprostheses based on the conical leg, the advantage of which is the ability to intraoperatively simulate an endoprosthesis that best meets the specific clinical situation. Purpose of research. To assess the benefits of modular endoprosthesis of the acetabulum in patients with tumoral defeat periacetabular region.Patients and methods. Within the period of 2011–2018 30 patients underwent surgical treatment in form of periacetabular resection with a modular endoprosthesis reconstruction in P.Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Institute – Branch of National Medical Research Radiological Centre of Ministry of Health of Russian Federation. There were 13 men (43%) and 17 women (57%). The median age was 45 years (23–63 years). Primary bone cancers were in 19 (63%) patients, giant cell tumors in 5 (17%), locally advanced soft tissue sarcoma in 1 (3%), solitary metastases of kidney cancer in 2 (7%), and recurrent sarcomas after previous surgical treatment in 3 (10%) patients.Results. The average duration of the operation was 310 min (145–520 min), the volume of intraoperative blood loss was 5520 ml (600–20 000 ml). The positive edge of resection according to the results of the planned morphological study was revealed in 3 (10%) patients. The average follow-up period was 36 months (4-73 months). Disease progression in terms of 6 to 40 months was revealed in 10 (33%) patients. 8 (27%) patients from disease progression. Complications of different types were diagnosed in 11 (37%) patients, among whom infectious complications prevailed 9 (30%). The average value of the functional results on a scale MSTS accounted for 59% (15 to 82%). Conclusion. The use of modular systems of endoprosthesis replacement of the acetabulum and hip joint in tumor lesions is a promising surgical technique that allows to achieve adequate functional results with a comparable number of postoperative complications.

Purpose of the study. Evaluation of the results of surgical treatment of desmoid fibroids (DF) using reconstructive plastic surgery and determination of possible prognostic factors of relapses.Patients and methods. The results of surgical treatment of 40 patients with desmoid fibroids of extra abdominal local­ization were analyzed. In 45% of patients, the tumor was located in soft tissues of the shoulder girdle and upper limb, in 35% — on the trunk, in 20% — in soft tissues of the lower limb and in 7% of patients on the neck. The tumor size varied from 2 to 20 cm, the median was 8 ± 4.38 cm. Surgical treatment for newly diagnosed DF was performed in 22 (55%) patients, and for recurrent tumors — in 18 (45%) patients.Results. According to the planned histological study, negative resection boundaries were established in 24/40 patients (63%). In the remaining 16 cases (37%) positive resection margins were obtained: R1 in 14 patients and R2 in 2 patients. Adjuvant treatment is recommended for 14 patients with resection R1/R2. The duration of follow — up after treatment ranged from 6 to 107 months, median‑16.5 months. During follow-up, relapses were diagnosed in 14 patients (35%). No deaths have been reported.Conclusion. Surgical treatment of DF of extraabdominal localization is accompanied by a sufficiently high frequency of relapses. According to the results of the study, an unfavorable factor in the development of relapses is the location of the tumor in soft tissues of the shoulder girdle and upper limb.

Berezanskite, ideally Ti□2KLi3(Si12O30), is hexagonal, space group P6/mcc, a = 9.898(4), c = 14.276(6) Å, V = 1211.2(9) Å3, Z = 2. The crystal structure was refined to an R1 index of 2.08% based on 392 unique observed reflections. Berezanskite is isostructural with milarite, ideally ACa2BoCKT(2)(Be2Al)(T(1)Si12O30)(H2O)0–2. The structural unit is of the form [T(2)3T(1)12O30] with T(1) = Si and T(2) = Li, in which (LiO4) tetrahedra link [Si12O30] six-membered double-rings into a framework. The A, B and C sites occur in the interstices of the framework with the following site populations: A = Ti4+2, = 1.938(2) Å; B =□2; C = K, = 3.058(2) Å. In the T(2) = Li3 milarite-group minerals, the distance is inversely related to the occupancy of the B site.

The purpose of the study : to evaluate the efficacy of surgical and combined modality treatment in patients with pelvic chondrosarcoma. Materials and methods . The study included 52 patients with pelvic chondrosarcoma. Forty-two (81 %) patients had well-differentiated and 10 (19 %) patients had poorly differentiated chondrosarcoma. Sixteen (30 %) patients underwent interiliac-abdominal resection of the pelvis and 36 (70 %) patients were treated with organ-preserving surgery. Of the patients treated with organpreserving surgery, 22 (61 %) patients underwent reconstructive surgery. The follow-up period was 45 months (range, 8 –18 months). Results . Positive resection margins were found in 8 (15 %) patients. Postoperative complications were observed in 13 (25 %) patients. The median MSTS score was 92 % (range, 62–100%) for 14 (27 %) patients, who underwent surgery without reconstruction and 67 % (range, 40–95 %) for 22 (61 %) patients, who underwent reconstructive surgery. For 16 (30 %) patients, who underwent interiliacabdominal resection of the pelvis, the median MSTS score was 45 % (range, 25–68 %). Disease progression was observed in 16 (31 %) patients. The overall 5-year survival rate was 75 % and the 5-yaer disease-free survival rate was 60 %. Conclusion . The oncology and functional outcomes are consistent with other recent studies, which indicate that organ-preserving surgery may be an appropriate approach in the treatment of patients with pelvic chondrosarcoma.

Presented the clinical observation of patients with multiple metastatic and myeloma lesions of the spine with the presence of pathological fractures of vertebral bodies and severe pain. The authors recommend multilevel vertebroplasty, as it allows to reduce pain, to prevent pathological fracture of the spine, and activate patients in a short time.

A new mineral, mariinskite, BeCr2O4, the chromium analog of chrysoberyl, has been found at the Mariinsky (Malyshevo) deposit, the Ural Emerald Mines, the Central Urals, Russia. The mineral is named after its type locality. It was discovered in chromitite in association with fluorphlogopite, Cr-bearing muscovite, eskolaite, and tourmaline. Mariinskite occurs as anhedral grains ranging from 0.01 to 0.3 mm in size; in some cases it forms pseudohexagonal chrysoberyl-type twins. The mineral is dark-green, with a pale green streak; the Mohs’ hardness is 8.5, microhardness VHN = 1725 kg/mm2. D meas = 4.25(2) g/cm3, D calc = 4.25 g/cm3. Microscopically, it is emerald-green, pleochroic from emerald-green (γ) to yellow-green (β) and greenish yellow (α). The new mineral is biaxial (+), γ = 2.15(1), β = 2.09(3), and α = 2.05(1), 2V meas = 80 ± (10)°, 2V calc = 80.5°. In reflected light, it is gray with green reflections; R max (589) = 12.9%; R min (589) = 12.3%, and there are strong, internal green reflections. The strongest absorption bands in the IR spectrum are as follows (cm−1): 935, 700, 614, 534. Space group Pnma, a = 9.727(3), b = 5.619(1), c = 4.499(1) A, V = 245.9(3) A3, Z = 4. The strongest reflections in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are as follows (d A, I, hkl): 4.08(40)(101), 3.31(90)(111), 2.629(50)(301), 2.434(50)(220), 2.381(40)(311), 2.139(60)(221), 1.651(100)(222). The average chemical composition of mariinskite (electron microprobe, wt %) is as follows: BeO 16.3, Al2O3 23.89, Cr2O3 58.67, Fe2O3 0.26, V2O3 0.26, TiO2 0.61, total is 99.98. The empirical formula, calculated on the basis of four O atoms is Be1.03(Cr1.22Al0.74Ti0.01Fe0.01V0.01)1.99O4. The compatibility index 1 − (Kp/Kc), 0.019, is excellent. The type specimens are deposited in the Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, and the Ural Geological Museum, Yekaterinburg, Russia.

The crystal structure of mendeleevite-(Ce), (Cs,☐)6(☐,Cs)6(☐,K)6(REE,Ca,☐)6(Si70O175) (H2O,OH,F,D)35, a new mineral from the moraine of the Darai-Pioz glacier, the Alai mountain ridge. Tien-Shan mountains, northern Tajikistan, was solved by direct methods and refined to Ri = 4.15% based on 2274 observed [Fo > 4σ|F|] unique reflections measured with Mo-Kα. radiation on a Bruker PA diffractorneter equipped with a CCD detector. Mendeleevite-(Ce) is cubic, space group Pm3̄, a 21.9148(4) Å, V 10525(1) Å3, Z = 2, Dcalc = 3.066 g/cm3. The empirical formula (electron microprobe) is CS5.94K2.22[(Ce11.35La5.86Nd3.23Pr1.54Sm0.32Gd0.20)Σ22.50(Ca4.68Sr1.00)Σ5.68]Σ28.18 Si70.12O203.17H45.67F6.83, Z = 2, calculated on the basis of 210 (O + F) a.p.f.u., with H2O and OH calculated from structure refinement (OH + F = 17 p.f.u.; H2O = 17.75 p.f.u.).The structural formula is (Cs4.65☐1.35)Σ6(☐4.71Cs1.29)Σ6(☐3.78K2.22)Σ6﹛[(Ce11.35La5.86Nd3.23 Pr1.54Sm0.32Gd0.20)Σ22.50(Ca4.68Sr1.00)Σ5.68]Σ28.18☐1.82﹜Σ30(Si70O175)[(OH)10.17F6.83]Σ17(H2O)17.75. The crystal structure of mendeleevite-(Ce) is an intercalation of two independent Si—O radicals and an M framework of (REE,Ca) polyhedra. The Si—O radicals are an (Si140O260)104– framework and an (Si36O90)36– cluster which do not link directly. The M framework is located between the Si—O framework and the Si—O clusters. Interstitial cations occupy two types of cages and channels. Cages I and II are 78 and 22% occupied by Cs. Channels along [100↻] contain K atoms and H2O groups. Mendeleevite-(Ce) has no natural or synthetic structural analogues. Mendeleevite-(Ce) is a framework mineral with large cavities and it has the potential to be used as a model for the synthesis of microporous materials of industrial interest.

X-ray structural analysis of nanopowder produced from high-speed steel waste by electrospark dispersion in distilled water shows that the primary phases are iron and magnetite.
