The mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT, 80–100 km) region is an important boundary between Earth's atmosphere below and space above and may act as a sensitive indicator for anthropogenic climate change. Existing observational and modeling studies have shown the middle atmosphere and the MLT is cooling and contracting because of increasing greenhouse gas emissions. However, trend analyses are highly sensitive to the time periods covered, their length, and the measurement type and methodology used. We present for the first time the linear and 11-year solar cycle responses in the meteor ablation altitude distributions observed by 12 meteor radars at different locations. Decreasing altitudes were seen at all latitudes (linear trends varying from −10.97 to −817.95 m dec−1), and a positive correlation with solar activity was seen for most locations. The divergence of responses at high latitudes indicates an important and complex interplay between atmospheric changes and dynamics at varying time scales.

This study analyzes strong sporadic E layer (Es) formation in Boa Vista (BV, 2.8°N, 60.7°W, dip: 18°), a low‐latitude region in the Brazilian sector, which occurred far after the onset of a magnetic storm recovery phase. Such occurrences were observed during seven magnetic storms with available data for BV. Thus, the ionospheric behavior on days around the magnetic storm that occurred on 20 January 2016 was investigated to search for possible explanations. This analysis indicated that the probable mechanism acting during the Es layer strengthening is the zonal westward electric field caused by a disturbance dynamo. The same evidence was also observed in two other magnetic storms at the same location. Hence, a numerical model of the E region dynamics, called MIRE (Portuguese acronym for E Region Ionospheric Model), was used to confirm whether the disturbance dynamo could cause the Es layer intensification. The inputs for the model were the electric field deduced from the vertical drift and the wind components provided by GSWM‐00 model. The simulations indicate that the Es layer density is significantly enhanced when the zonal electric field is present compared to the reference scenario with only the winds. Therefore, it is concluded that the disturbance dynamo electric field is the likely cause of the strong Es layers in the analyzed cases. Finally, the combined results from the model and observational data seem to contribute significantly to advance our understanding of the role of the electric fields in the Es layer formation at low latitudes.

This work analysis the blanketing sporadic layers (Es b ) behavior over Sao Luis, Brazil (2° 31′ S, 44° 16′ W, dip: −4.80) which is classified as a transition region between equatorial and low-latitude. Hence, some peculiarities can appear as Es b occurrence instead of the common Es q , which is a non-blanketing irregularity layer. The analysis presented here was obtained using a modified version of a theoretical model for the E region (MIRE), which computes the densities of the metallic ions (Fe + and Mg + ) and the densities of the main molecular ions (NO + , O 2 + , N 2 + ) by solving the continuity and momentum equations for each one of them. In that model, the Es layer physics driven by both diurnal and semidiurnal tidal winds are taken into account and it was extended in height coverage by adding a novel neutral wind model derived from the all-sky meteor radar measurements. Thus, we provide more trustworthy results related to the Es layer formation in the equatorial region. We verified the contribution of each tidal wind component to the Es b layer formation in this equatorial region. Additionally, we compared the Es layer electron density computed by MIRE with the data obtained by using the blanketing frequency parameter ( fb Es) deduced from ionograms. The results show that the diurnal component of the tidal wind is more important in the Es b layer formation whereas the semidiurnal component has a little contribution in our simulations. Finally, it was verified that the modified MIRE presented here can be used to study the Es b layers occurrence over the equatorial region in the Brazilian sector.

We present the first simultaneous observation of mesopause sodium (Na) and potassium (K) layer by a lidar which has Na and K channel simultaneously at the South Hemisphere site, Sao Jose dos Campos (23.1°S, 45.9°W). Measurements reported here were conducted on two nights with 3.5 and 8 h of observations in November 2016. On 20 November 2016, sporadic layers in both Na and K layer occurred above 100 km, and the higher layers corresponded well with sporadic E (Es) layer. And the density of Na at 100–105 km is higher than that at main layer around 90 km, but K density around 100 km is at least 3 times smaller compared with the K density around 90 km for the similar period. On 21 November 2016, both sporadic layers occurred in main layer height with obvious descending variations with time, which seems like tidal induced. Notably, the peak K/Na ratio slowly increased with time. And Na layer and K layer showed different processes along with time with K density reaching its maximum 1 h later than that of Na. Correlations of Na/K density, Es, and winds were also discussed.

This work presents new results about simulations of blanketing sporadic E-layers, Esb, using a modified version of a theoretical model for the E region (MIRE) for a Brazilian region: Cachoeira Paulista, a low latitude station. MIRE computes the densities of the metallic ions (Fe+ and Mg+) and of the main molecular ions (NO+, O2+, N2+) by solving the continuity and momentum equations for each one of them. Additionally, this model includes the physics of Es layer development driven by tidal winds. In this study, we extend MIRE adding a novel neutral wind model derived from the all-sky meteor radar measurements, which provides more trustworthy results related to the Es layer formation in the Brazilian sector. Afterwards, this new model is validated comparing the computed electron density for the Es layer with the electron density obtained using the blanketing frequency parameter (fbEs) deduced from ionograms in the analyzed region. The results show that the values computed by the extended MIRE are in good agreement with the observational data for the Es layers formed by the wind shear mechanism. Therefore, the extended MIRE presented in this work is the only available model that allows simulating Esb layers with a much higher confidence level for the low-latitude in the Brazilian sector.

This paper reports that the sodium–potassium (Na–K) lidar was completed in November 2016 at Sao Jose Dos Compose, Brazil (23°S, 45°W), by the joint effort of the National Space Science Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSSC) and Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE). This system realized the Na and K metal layers simultaneously observe in Brazil, and this is the first instance of K layer detection in South America. Some of the key parameters and technologies have been optimized based on the Na and K layer dual-wave lidar in Beijing Yanqing station, such as improve technical parameters for receiving telescope, the narrow linewidth, efficient laser frequency doubling, the wavelength automatic locking techniques. By adopting these technologies, the output were 589 nm and 770 nm lasers, with high emission powers of 75 mJ and 83 mJ, respectively, and backscattered signals of Na and K layers with high signal quality were obtained. Observation data showed that the original echo photon count of the Na layer was approximately 42,486 (time resolution: 200 s, spatial resolution: 96 m) and the number of noise photons was 286 in a single data acquisition. The signal-to-noise ratio was up to 205:1. At the same spatiotemporal resolution, the original echo photon count of the K layer was approximately 1633, the noise photons were 38, and the signal-to-noise ratio was up to 40:1. The initial photocounts received has demonstrated that the Brazil K lidar has produced high quality signal with signal-to-noise level required by intended science studies. Moreover, the simultaneous phenomena of sporadic Na (Nas) and sporadic K (Ks), and the highly concentrated layers of atomic K have been observed, the K density in these narrow layers exceeds 1019 cm−3.

In the equatorial region planetary scale waves play an important role transporting significant amount of energy and momentum through atmosphere. Quantifying the momentum transported by these waves and its effects on the mean flow is rather important. Direct estimates of the momentum flux transported by waves require horizontal and vertical wind measurements. Ground-based meteor radars have provided continuous and reliable measurements of the horizontal wind components in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region and have contributed to improve our knowledge of the dynamics of this region. However, instrumental limitations hinder its use for measuring vertical winds and momentum fluxes. On the other hand, according to Babu et al (2012), all- sky meteor radars are able to infer tridimensional winds when using a large number of meteor echoes centered at the meteor ablation peak. Following this approach, we have used measurements performed by a Meteor Radar installed at Sao Joao do Cariri, Brazil (7.4°S; 36.5°W) in order to measure vertical winds and calculate the momentum flux transported by equatorial planetary scale waves. In order to evaluate the accuracy of vertical wind values we have performed several tests based on a simple model considering real meteor distributions and theoretical equations for the MLT winds motion. From our tests, we inferred that Brazilian meteor radar data can be used for this purpose with an accuracy of ~ 1.8 m/s. The results show that the vertical wind presents magnitudes of a few meters per second and occasionally reaches magnitudes around 10 m/s. Below 92 km the vertical wind is predominantly upward during the whole year and above exhibits a semi-annual oscillation with downward phase during the equinoxes. Variations associated to planetary scale waves in the vertical wind are also observed and some of them appear simultaneously in the zonal and meridional wind as well. Largest wave induced amplitudes in the vertical wind are found in the 3–4 d band, reaching up to 4 m/s. From the vertical and zonal wind measurements, we calculated the vertical transport of zonal momentum in the 3–4 d band and found it to be maximum near autumn equinox, when its value reaches almost 20 m2/s2, while minimum momentum flux is observed after the winter solstice.

We have applied a modified composite day analysis to the Hocking (2005) technique to study gravity wave (GW) momentum fluxes in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Wind measurements from almost continuous meteor radar observations during June 2004–December 2008 over São João do Cariri (Cariri; 7° S, 36° W), April 1999–November 2008 over Cachoeira Paulista (CP; 23° S, 45° W), and February 2005–December 2009 over Santa Maria (SM; 30° S, 54° W) were used to estimate the GW momentum fluxes and variances in the MLT region. Our analysis can provide monthly mean altitude profiles of vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum for short-period (less than 2–3 h) GWs. The averages for each month throughout the entire data series have shown different behavior for the momentum fluxes depending on latitude and component. The meridional component has almost the same behavior at the three sites, being positive (northward), for most part of the year. On the other hand, the zonal component shows different behavior at each location: it is positive for almost half the year at Cariri and SM but predominantly negative over CP. Annual variation in the GW momentum fluxes is present at all sites in the zonal component and also in SM at 89 km in the meridional component. The seasonal analysis has also shown a 4-month oscillation at 92.5 km over SM in the zonal component and over CP at the same altitudes but for the meridional component.

In the present work, we analyze the competition between tidal winds and electric fields in the formation of blanketing sporadic E layers (Esb) over Sao Luis, Brazil (2° 31′ S, 44° 16′ W), a quasi-equatorial station. To investigate this competition, we have used an ionospheric E region model (MIRE) that is able to model the Esb layers taking into account the E region winds and electric fields. The model calculates the densities for the main molecular and metallic ions by solving the continuity and momentum equations for each of the species. Thus, the main purpose of this analysis is to verify the electric fields role in the occurrence or disruption of Esb layers through simulations. The first results of the simulations show that the Esb layer is usually present when only the tidal winds were considered. In addition, when the zonal component of the electric field is introduced in the simulation, the Esb layers do not show significant changes. However, the simulations show the disruption of the Esb layers when the vertical electric field is included. In this study, we present two specific cases in which Esb layers appear during some hours over Sao Luis. We can see that these layers appear when the vertical electric field was weak, which means that the tidal components were more effective during these hours. Therefore, the vertical component of the electric field is the main agent responsible for the Esb layer disruption.

Solar cycle dependence of the dominant tides, i.e. diurnal and semidiurnal components in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) is investigated from a Southern hemispheric low-latitude station, Cachoeira Paulista (22.7oS, 45oW) using long-term meteor wind observations (1999–2018). Although the long-term variations of the tides in aggregate do not show any significant relationship with the solar activity, the individual seasonal profiles reveal appreciable correlation in equinoxes with maximum in fall and no evident correlation in summer. The diurnal tide seasonal profiles show negative correlation with the solar activity and the semidiurnal tide exhibits both negative and positive correlations that vary with altitude within the MLT. The zonal diurnal tide shows positive correlation with the solar flux in the upper MLT in solar minima. However, the meridional semidiurnal tide reveals negative correlation in solar minima condition. No evident relationship between the tides and solar flux is found in solar maxima condition. Since the present study points out resemblance as well as dissimilarity with a handful of previous investigations, further long-term and coordinated studies are being sought to obtain critical understanding of the persistent enigmatic features.

We compare meteor radar measurements of the MLT region winds at Santa Maria, Brazil (29.7°S, 53.8°W) with the Horizontal Neutral Wind Model (HWM-93) and the Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM-00). The observed annual variation of the prevailing zonal wind disagrees in some respects with the HWM-93 model. Also, the zonal diurnal tide amplitude shows an annual variation, whereas that of the GSWM-00 is semiannual, and its vertical wavelength is smaller than that suggested by the model. The observed semidiurnal tide shows seasonal and inter-annual variations and the phase is evanescent during almost the whole year.

Fast forward interplanetary shocks (FFS) are characterized by positive jump in all interplanetary plasma parameters (solar wind speed, temperature and density) and interplanetary magnetic field. However the fast reverse interplanetary shocks (FRS) are characterized by negative jump in all mentioned parameters except solar wind speed. Observations show that FFS cause positive sudden impulses (SI) while FRS cause negative SI in the H-component of the geomagnetic field. In this work we investigate the SI caused by interplanetary shocks. We use the observed plasma parameters, upstream and downstream, to calculate the variation of dynamic pressure. We observe that the SI amplitude is larger for positive SI than for negative ones, as a consequence of the fact that FFS have larger dynamic pressure variations as compared to FRS. Choques interplanetários do tipo frontal rápido (FFS) são caracterizados por uma descontinuidade súbita positiva em todos os parâmetros de plasma interplanetário (velocidade, temperatura e densidade do vento solar) e campo magnético interplanetário. Os choques do tipo reverso rápido (FRS) possuem descontinuidade súbita negativa em todos os parâmetros exceto a velocidade do vento solar. Observa-se que os FFS causam impulsos súbitos (SI) positivos e os FRS causam SI negativos na componente H do campo magnético terrestre. Neste trabalho realizou-se um estudo destes impulsos súbitos, causados por choques interplanetários. Utilizaram-se os parâmetros de plasma, antes e depois do choque, para calcular a variação da pressão dinâmica. Observou-se que os SIs são maiores quando causados por FFS que quando formados por FRS, isto porque os FFS possuem maior variação na pressão dinâmica que os FRS.

A mesospheric bore was observed with an all-sky airglow imager on the night of 9–10 July 2007 at Ferraz Station (62° S, 58° W), located on King George island on the Antarctic Peninsula. The observed bore propagated from southwest to northeast with a well defined wave front and a series of crests behind the main front. There was no evidence of dissipation during its propagation within the field of view. The wave parameters were obtained via a 2-D Fourier transform of the imager data providing a horizontal wavelength of 33 km, an observed period of 6 min, and a horizontal phase speed of 92 m s−1. Simultaneous mesospheric winds were measured with a medium frequency (MF) radar at Rothera Station (68° S, 68° W) and temperature profiles were obtained from the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite. These wind and temperature profiles were used to estimate the propagation environment of the bore. A wavelet technique was applied to the wind in the plane of bore propagation at the OH emission height spanning three days centered on the bore event to define the dominant periodicities. Results revealed a dominance of near-inertial periods, and semi-diurnal and terdiurnal tides suggesting that the ducting structure enabling bore propagation occurred on large spatial scales. The observed tidal motions were used to reconstruct the winds employing a least-squares method, which were then compared to the observed ducting environment. Results suggest an important contribution of large-scale winds to the ducting structure, but with buoyancy frequency variations in the vertical also expected to be important. These results allow us to conclude that the bore was supported by a duct including contributions from both winds and temperature (or stability). A co-located airglow temperature imager operated simultaneously with the all-sky imager confirmed that the bore event was the dominant small-scale wave event during the analysis interval.

In this paper we study the relationship between Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) and the count rate muon decrease detected by the muon detector network in November 6-20, 2004. The Muon Detector Network is composed by the detectors installed in Nagoya (Japan), Hobart (Australian) and the prototype detector installed in the “Observatorio Espacial do Sul – OES/CRSPE/INPE-MCT”, located in Sao Martinho da Serra, RS, Brazil. With the muons count rate observed by the Muon Detector Network, we will be able to observe, in the future,the direction in which a given ICME moves, and with that, we will be able to calculate the angle which they reach the Earth. Also, with this muon network, we will be able to send alerts of up to 12 hours before the arrival of a shock or an ICME. The Space Weather forecast method using cosmic rays will be a very important tool because it provides a forecast with good antecedence.

O meio interplanetario, o espaco entre os planetas e o Sol, esta permeado pelo vento solar que e a propria atmosfera solar se expandindo no espaco interplanetario. Esta atmosfera e composta por um plasma tenue magnetizado o qual favorece a acao das forcas Coulombianas de longo alcance. Estas pela presenca deste campo magnetico, conseguem exercer seu papel que e o de transferencia de momentum e informacao as particulas provenientes do Sol. Qualquer mudanca na atividade solar se reflete no meio interplanetario devido a transferencia de informacoes. A agitacao do Sol, consequencia de sua constante atividade, e transmitida ao vento solar e frequentemente produz Ondas de Choque. E possivel, com o estudo das variacoes dos parâmetros interplanetarios como: densidade, temperatura e velocidade do vento solar e intensidade do campo magnetico interplanetario – CMI, identificar a presenca desses choques e calcular sua velocidade, intensidade e direcao. Neste trabalho utilizamos dados de plasma e CMI fornecidos pelo sistema de dados On-line da sonda ACE – Advanced Composition Explorer, para fazer um estudo acerca de ondas de choque, analisando os graficos de dados destes eventos e classificando-os, segundo os perfis dos choques feitos por E. Echer et al. [2003], em choques frontais, rapidos e lentos; ou reversos, rapidos e lentos. Este estudo deteve-se ao periodo de 2002 – 2003, que corresponde ao declinio do Ciclo Solar 23.

Acredita-se que o mecanismo fisico responsavel pela transferencia de energia do Vento Solar para a Magnetosfera seja a reconexao entre o Campo Magnetico Interplanetario e o Campo Magnetico Terrestre - Tsurutani e Gonzalez, 1997. O criterio necessario para que ocorra uma Tempestade Geomagnetica Intensa, Dst Interplanetario, na direcao do anoitecer, maior que 5mV/m, por um periodo maior que 3 horas. O objetivo do trabalho e comparar a previsao de Tempestades Geomagneticas feita por satelites localizados no ponto Lagrangeano - L1, e a Rede Internacional de Detectores de Muons, mostrando as vantagens e desvantagens de cada um.
