Abstract: International audience; Cellular materials, in particular metal or polymer foams and beam lattices, are characterized by a complex architecture where the material is concentrated in slender struts. This study is concerned with the construction of numerically efficient samplespecific digital twin for the analysis and characterization of the mechanical behavior of such meta-materials. A method to build an explicit, light, and analysis-suitable isogeometric beam model directly from digital images is proposed. More precisely, as a main contribution, the Virtual Image Correlation method is extended to the case of multiple interconnected beams with varying cross-sections. Special care is also given to the initialization for better efficiency and robustness. Synthetic and real examples of increasing complexity, i.e. curved beams, lattices, and foams, are presented to account for the performance of the developed workflow from digital images to an isogeometric twin for mechanical modelling and simulation.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD) are at risk of suicide. Sleep and circadian rhythm alterations are widely recognized as core symptoms of major depressive disorder and are associated with suicidal ideation. Thus, sleep and circadian rhythm alterations may be targeted to prevent suicide.Methods: Patients were recruited from a prospective cohort of the French network of TRD expert centers. Mood, sleep and circadian rhythms were assessed at baseline; suicidal risk was assessed both at baseline and during a one-year follow-up with standardized subjective questionnaires.Results: Excessive daytime sleepiness (adjusted odds ratio aOR = 1.7(1-3.3), p = 0.04) and daytime dysfunction (aOR = 1.81(1.16-2.81), p = 0.0085) increased the risk of suicidal thoughts over the one-year follow-up period in patients with TRD after adjustment on age, gender, depression, trauma, anxiety, impulsivity, current daily tobacco smoking and body mass index. Hypnotics intake is associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideation at one-year follow-up after the same adjustments (OR = 0.73(0.56-0.95), p = 0.019). Other associations between sleep quality or circadian rhythms and suicidal ideations at either baseline or one year did not remain significant in multivariate analyses after the same adjustments.Limitations: Sleep assessments were based on self-reported questionnaires rather than objective measures.Conclusions: Daytime sleepiness and dysfunction are predictors of suicidal ideations, whereas hypnotics intake is associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideations. Diurnal symptoms of sleep disturbances are therefore red flags to target for preventing suicide in depressed patients, and hypnotics seem efficient in preventing suicide for patients with TRD.

Abstract: International audience; Current trends in the aerospace industry for the digitization of data, tools, and services call for novel solutions that can keep track of the latest technological advancements. Moreover, the increasing drive toward model-based approaches imposes the use of models for the development of complex systems, such as satellites. New types of methods and tools are needed in order to manage the still-growing complexity of embedded systems and their corresponding models. This paper addresses issues related to space systems (in-service) operations and proposes a multimodel approach to address them. The multimodel approach aims at facilitating the task of operational diagnosis by creating a monitoring and diagnosis-dedicated system model derived from existing system design (architecture, functional behavior, and safety) models. The purpose of the diagnosis-dedicated model is to enable the codesign of the system and its diagnosis tools in order to improve the performance of diagnosis activities and the system’s availability. This paper demonstrates the interests of the suggested approach with regard to the limitations of current practices.

Abstract: International audience; Objective: To establish international recommendations for the management of spastic equinovarus foot deformity. Design: Delphi method. Setting: International study. Participants: A total of 24 international experts (N=24) in neuro-orthopedic deformities, from different specialties (Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physicians, neurologists, geriatricians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons). Interventions: Experts answered 3 rounds of questions related to important aspects of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of spastic equinovarus foot deformity. Main Outcome Measures: A consensus was established when at least 80% of experts agreed on a statement Results: A total of 52 items reached consensus. Experts recommend assessing effect of the deformity on functional activities before treatment. Before treatment, it is crucial to differentiate spastic muscle overactivity from soft tissue contractures, identify which muscles are involved in the deformity, and evaluate the activity of antagonist muscles. Motor nerve blocks, 2-dimensional video analysis, and radiologic examinations are often required to complement a clinical examination. The treatment of equinovarus foot depends on the correctability of the deformity and the patient's ability to stand or walk. The preoperative assessment should include an interdisciplinary consultation that must finalize a formal agreement between physicians and the patient, which will define personalized attainable goals before surgery. Conclusion: The establishment of guidelines on managing equinovarus foot will help physicians and surgeons, specialists, and nonspecialists to diagnoses and assess the deformity and direct patients to a network of experts to optimize patient functional recovery and improve their autonomy.

Abstract: International audience; Because of the formation of specific antibodies to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leading to life-threatening side effects, there is an increasing need to develop alternatives to treatments and diagnostic methods based on PEGylated copolymers. Block copolymers comprising a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) segment can be used for the design of such vectors without any PEG block. As an example, a poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP) copolymer with controlled composition and molar mass is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Mixing this copolymer with lanthanide cations (Gd3+, Eu3+, Y3+) leads to the formation of hybrid polyion complexes with increased stability, preventing the lanthanide cytotoxicity and in vitro cell penetration. These new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when intravenously administered into mice. No leaching of gadolinium ions is detected from such hybrid complexes.

Abstract: This article introduces new multiplicative updates for nonnegative matrix factorization with the $\beta$-divergence and sparse regularization of one of the two factors (say, the activation matrix). It is well known that the norm of the other factor (the dictionary matrix) needs to be controlled in order to avoid an ill-posed formulation. Standard practice consists in constraining the columns of the dictionary to have unit norm, which leads to a nontrivial optimization problem. Our approach leverages a reparametrization of the original problem into the optimization of an equivalent scale-invariant objective function. From there, we derive block-descent majorization-minimization algorithms that result in simple multiplicative updates for either $\ell_{1}$-regularization or the more "aggressive" log-regularization. In contrast with other state-of-the-art methods, our algorithms are universal in the sense that they can be applied to any $\beta$-divergence (i.e., any value of $\beta$) and that they come with convergence guarantees. We report numerical comparisons with existing heuristic and Lagrangian methods using various datasets: face images, an audio spectrogram, hyperspectral data, and song play counts. We show that our methods obtain solutions of similar quality at convergence (similar objective values) but with significantly reduced CPU times.

Abstract: Self-organisation is the spontaneous emergence of spatio-temporal structures and patterns from the interaction of smaller individual units. Examples are found across many scales in very different systems and scientific disciplines, from physics, materials science and robotics to biology, geophysics andastronomy. Recent research has highlighted how self-organisation can be both mediated and controlled by confinement. Confinement is an action over a system that limits its units’ translational and rotational degrees of freedom, thus also influencing the system’s phase space probability density; it can functionas either a catalyst or inhibitor of self-organisation. Confinement can then become a means to actively steer the emergence or suppression of collective phenomena in space and time. Here, to provide a common framework and perspective for future research, we examine the role of confinement in the self-organisation of soft-matter systems and identify overarching scientific challenges that need to be addressed to harness its full scientific and technological potential in soft matter and related fields.By drawing analogies with other disciplines, this framework will accelerate a common deeper understanding of self-organisation and trigger the development of innovative strategies to steer it using confinement, with impact on, e.g., the design of smarter materials, tissue engineering for biomedicineand in guiding active matter.

Abstract: International audience; The popularity of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is growing significantly, and so is the interest in gaining a better understanding of their functioning. In this work, it is even more interesting to reveal the behavior of these blackboxes since we are involved in a clinical context. To this end, we propose a general analytic framework, named Neuro-based Concept Detector (NCD), for interpreting deep representations of a DNN. Based on the activation patterns of the hidden neurons, this framework highlights the capacity of neurons to detect a specific concept related to the final task. The key strength of our framework is that it provides an interpretability tool for any type of DNN performing a classification task regardless of the application field. In this paper, we evaluate this framework on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained for the task of French phone classification. This choice was guided by the final objective of a long-term research project, which aims to identify the linguistic units best contributing to the maintenance or loss of intelligibility in the context of speech disorders. Through NCD, we demonstrate the emergence of phonetic features in the classification layers of the CNN-based model, while applied on healthy speech, a concept with a great interest in the field of clinical phonetics. Indeed, we further show that these interesting findings shed light on the characteristics of speech disorders in terms of altered phonetic features and provide relevant information for clinical practice, notably, patients' rehabilitation and follow-up.

Abstract: International audience; Animal-inspired mobile robots tend to show remarkable performance in outdoor locomotion and navigation tasks, but a big gap remains between robots and animals in terms of autonomy and endurance. Biomimicry is helping to solve numerous design issues through a better understanding of how animals move. Insect-inspired robots, in particular, can be built to interact with uneven terrains which are difficult to traverse for other robots, and bio-inspired robots designed to overcome the technological limitations of artificial systems are also valuable models for biologists in better understanding the behavior of animals. Therefore, exploring the limitations caused by mimicking insects of a few millimeters with robots measuring several centimeters becomes relevant. In this study, we first present two test benches used to investigate leg movement: one used to characterize that of an ant and the other that of a robotic leg. By comparing this multiscale data, we discuss the significance and relevance of these measurements in evaluating the robotic performance.

Abstract: International audience; Background: The association between omega-3 (ω-3) PUFAs and cognition, brain imaging and biomarkers is still not fully established.Objectives: The aim was to analyze the cross-sectional and retrospective longitudinal associations between erythrocyte ω-3 index and cognition, brain imaging, and biomarkers among older adults.Methods: A total of 832 Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 3 (ADNI-3) participants, with a mean (SD) age of 74.0 (7.9) y, 50.8% female, 55.9% cognitively normal, 32.7% with mild cognitive impairment, and 11.4% with Alzheimer disease (AD) were included. A low ω-3 index (%EPA + %DHA) was defined as the lowest quartile (≤3.70%). Cognitive tests [composite score, AD Assessment Scale Cognitive (ADAS-Cog), Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), Trail Making Test, Category Fluency, Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment] and brain variables [hippocampal volume, white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), positron emission tomography (PET) amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau] were considered as outcomes in regression models.Results: Low ω-3 index was not associated with cognition, hippocampal, and WMH volume or brain Aβ and tau after adjustment for demographics, ApoEε4, cardiovascular disease, BMI, and total intracranial volume in the cross-sectional analysis. In the retrospective analysis, low ω-3 index was associated with greater Aβ accumulation (adjusted β = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.03; P = 0.003). The composite cognitive score did not differ between groups; however, low ω-3 index was significantly associated with greater WMS-delayed recall cognitive decline (adjusted β = -1.18; 95% CI: -2.16, -0.19; P = 0.019), but unexpectedly lower total ADAS-Cog cognitive decline. Low ω-3 index was cross-sectionally associated with lower WMS performance (adjusted β = -1.81, SE = 0.73, P = 0.014) and higher tau accumulation among ApoE ε4 carriers.Conclusions: Longitudinally, low ω-3 index was associated with greater Aβ accumulation and WMS cognitive decline but unexpectedly with lower total ADAS-Cog cognitive decline. Although no associations were cross-sectionally found in the whole population, low ω-3 index was associated with lower WMS cognition and higher tau accumulation among ApoE ε4 carriers. Abstract: This work undertakes to combine the interests of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) and standard Finite Element Methods (FEM) for the global/local simulation of structures. The idea is to adopt a hybrid global-IGA/local-FEM modeling, thereby benefiting from: (i) the superior geometric description and per-Degree-Of-Freedom accuracy of IGA for capturing global, regular responses, and (ii) the ability of FEM to compute local, strongly non-linear or even singular behaviors. For the sake of minimizing the implementation effort, we develop a coupling scheme that is fully non-invasive in the sense that the initial global spline model to be enriched is never modified and the construction of the coupling operators can be performed using conventional FE packages. The key ingredient is to express the FEM-to-IGA bridge, based on B{\'e}zier extraction, to transform the initial global spline interface into a FE one on which the local FE mesh can be constructed. This allows to resort to classic FE trace operators to implement the coupling. It results in a strategy that offers the opportunity to simply couple an isogeometric code with any robust FE code suitable for the modelling of complex local behaviors. The method also easily extends in case the users only have at their disposal FE codes. This is the situation that is considered for the numerical illustrations. 12. Recent Advances in Adaptive Coarse Spaces and Availability in Open Source Libraries

Abstract: International audience; Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.

Abstract: International audience; Background and purpose - A clinical risk score for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy could help improve prevention. Methods - A case-control study was conducted including (i) definite or probable SUDEP cases collected by the French National Sentinel Mortality Epilepsy Network and (ii) control patients from the French national research database of epilepsy monitoring units. Abstract: International audience; Self-regulated learning (SRL) is a crucial higher-order skill required by learners of the 21st century, who will need to become lifelong learners to adapt to the continually changing environments. Literature provides examples of tools for scaffolding SRL in online environments. In this study, we provide the state-of-the-art concerning tools that support SRL in terms of theoretical models underpinning development, supported SRL processes, tool functionalities, used data and visualizations. We reviewed 42 articles published between 2008 and 2020, including information from 25 tools designed to support SRL. Our findings indicate that (1) many of the studies do not explicitly specify the SRL theoretical model used to guide the design process of the tool; (2) goal setting, monitoring, and self-evaluation are the most prevalent SRL processes supported through functionalities such as content navigation, user input forms, collaboration features, and recommendations; (3) the relationship between tool functionalities and SRL processes are rarely described; (4) few tools assess the impact on learners' SRL process and learning performance. Finally, we highlight some lessons learned that might contribute to implementing future tools that support learners' SRL processes.

Abstract: Using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as an optical probe we demonstrate the presence of free carriers in phosphorus doped silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in a silica matrix. In small SiNCs, with radius ranging from 2.6 to 5.5 nm, the infrared spectroscopy study coupled to numerical simulations allows us to determine the number of electrically active phosphorus atoms with a precision of a few atoms. We demonstrate that LSP resonances can be supported with only about 10 free electrons per nanocrystal, confirming theoretical predictions and probing the limit of the collective nature of plasmons. We reveal the appearance of an avoided crossing behavior linked to the hybridization between the localized surface plasmon in the doped nanocrystals and the silica matrix phonon modes. Finally, a careful analysis of the scattering time dependence versus carrier density in the small size regime allows us to detect the appearance of a new scattering process at high dopant concentration, which can be explained by P clustering inside the SiNCs.

Abstract: International audience; With the health problem, digital training has assumed a major role in our society. Some of the numerous online trainingopportunities are free, allowing the user to learn without having to pay, but occasionally we may question about the worth ofthese training opportunities—do they provide the same quality as the paid ones? Our two studies, which gathered informationfrom 245 and 114 individuals, demonstrates that a free course can have the same value and interest as a paid course and thatthe cost of an e-learning course does not always affect the value that the user attributes to it. We found that free training is animportant deciding factor because it provides the training with an advantage over the identical paid service that goes beyondsimple cost savings. As a result, free training may appear to the user to offer more overall benefits than expensive training.We also found that a price perceived as “a fair price” appear to the user as giving more benefits that an “expensive one”.

Abstract: International audience; Background Digital Volume correlation (DVC) consists in identifying the displacement fields that allow for the best possible registration of volume images of a sample captured at various loading stages. With cellular materials, the use of DVC faces an intrinsic limit: in the absence of an exploitable texture on (or in) the struts or cell walls, the available speckle pattern will unavoidably be formed by the material architecture itself. This leads to the inability of classical DVC techniques to measure kinematics below the cellular scale, i.e. at the sub-cellular or micro scales. Objective Here, we extend a newly developed architecture-driven DIC technique [1] for the measurement of 3D displacement fields in real cellular materials at the scale of the architecture. Methods The proposed solution consists in assisting DVC by a weak elastic regularization using, as support, an automatic finite-element image-based mechanical model. Results Complex (locally buckling) kinematics of a polyurethane foam under compression are accurately measured during an in-situ test. The method is essential to evidence the class of dominance (stretching versus bending) of the foam. Conclusions The proposed method allows to confirm that the foam used is bending-dominated, which is not possible with a classical mesoscopic DVC approach. This method is a good candidate for the analysis of complex local deformation mechanisms at the architecture scale.

Abstract: International audience; Infants learn their native language(s) at an amazing speed. Before they even talk, their perception adapts to the language(s) they hear. However, the mechanisms responsible for this perceptual attunement still remain unclear. A long tradition in linguistics points to the importance of specialized language mechanisms that would allow us to quickly and effortlessly learn from the language(s) we are exposed to. However, the currently dominant explanation for perceptual attunement posits that infants apply a domain-general learning mechanism consisting in learning statistical regularities from the speech stream they hear, and which may be found in learning across domains and across species. Critically, the feasibil- ity of employing purely domain-general statistical learning mechanisms has only been demonstrated with computational models on unrealistic and simplified input. This paper presents the first attempt to study perceptual attunement with 2,000 hours of ecological child-centered recordings in American English and Metropolitan French. We show that, when applied on ecologically-valid data, generic learning mecha- nisms develop a language-relevant perceptual space but fail to show evidence for perceptual attunement. It is only when supplemented with domain-specific audio filtering and augmentation mechanisms that computational models show a significant attunement to the language they have been exposed to. Hence, we conclude that, when learning from ecological audio, domain-specific mechanisms may be necessary to guide early language learning in the wild even if the learning itself is done through generic mechanisms. We anticipate our work to be a starting point for ecologically-valid computational models of perceptual attunement in other domains and species.

Abstract: International audience; We introduce and study a class of entanglement criteria based on the idea of applying local contractions to an input multipartite state, and then computing the projective tensor norm of the output. More precisely, we apply to a mixed quantum state a tensor product of contractions from the Schatten class $S_1$ to the Euclidean space $\ell_2$, which we call entanglement testers. We analyze the performance of this type of criteria on bipartite and multipartite systems, for general pure and mixed quantum states, as well as on some important classes of symmetric quantum states. We also show that previously studied entanglement criteria, such as the realignment and the SIC POVM criteria, can be viewed inside this framework. This allows us to answer in the positive two conjectures of Shang, Asadian, Zhu, and G\"uhne by deriving systematic relations between the performance of these two criteria.

Abstract: Abstract. This study was carried out within the context of an assessment for promotion to a high-status position. It aimed to determine the conditions in which the backlash effect occurs in a group characterized by negative stereotypes owing to their ethnicity: North African males in France. One hundred twenty-eight recruitment professionals assessed the probability of promoting one of eight fictitious male applicants with different causal attributions (internal or external) and levels of technical competence (high or average), and of different ethnicities (European or North African). Internal attribution, one of the dimensions of self-promotion, was regarded as a counterstereotypical behavior for a North African applicant compared with a European applicant. Backlash was only observed in a high-threat context.

Abstract: International audience; Peters' anomaly (PA) is a rare anterior segment dysgenesis characterized by central corneal opacity and irido-lenticulo-corneal adhesions. Several genes are involved in syndromic or isolated PA (B3GLCT, PAX6, PITX3, FOXE3, CYP1B1). Some copy number variations (CNVs) have also been occasionally reported. Despite this genetic heterogeneity, most of patients remain without genetic diagnosis. We retrieved a cohort of 95 individuals with PA and performed genotyping using a combination of comparative genomic hybridization, whole genome, exome and targeted sequencing of 119 genes associated with ocular development anomalies. Causative genetic defects involving 12 genes and CNVs were identified for 1/3 of patients. Unsurprisingly, B3GLCT and PAX6 were the most frequently implicated genes, respectively in syndromic and isolated PA. Unexpectedly, the third gene involved in our cohort was SOX2, the major gene of micro-anophthalmia. Four unrelated patients with PA (isolated or with microphthalmia) were carrying pathogenic variants in this gene that was never associated with PA before. Here we described the largest cohort of PA patients ever reported. The genetic bases of PA are still to be explored as genetic diagnosis was unavailable for 2/3 of patients. Nevertheless, we showed here for the first time the involvement of SOX2 in PA, offering new evidence for its role in corneal transparency and anterior segment development.

Abstract: International audience; Multifractal analysis has become a reference tool for signal and image processing. Grounded in the quantification of local regularity fluctuations, it has proven useful in an increasing range of applications, yet so far involving only univariate data (scalar valued time series or single channel images). Recently the theoretical ground for multivariate multifractal analysis has been devised, showing potential for quantifying transient higher-order dependence beyond linear correlation among collections of data. However, the accurate estimation of the parameters associated with a multivariate multifractal model remains challenging, especially for small sample size data. This work studies an original Bayesian framework for multivariate multifractal estimation, combining a novel and generic multivariate statistical model, a Whittle-based likelihood approximation and a data augmentation strategy allowing parameter separability. This careful design enables efficient estimation procedures to be constructed for two relevant choices of priors using a Gibbs sampling strategy. Monte Carlo simulations, conducted on synthetic multivariate signals and images with various sample sizes and multifractal parameter settings, demonstrate significant performance improvements over the state of the art, at only moderately larger computational cost. Moreover, we show the relevance of the proposed framework for real-world data modeling in the important application of drowsiness detection from multichannel physiological signals.

Abstract: 22 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. Abstract: International audience; Task-based programming models have succeeded in gaining the interest of the high-performance mathematical software community because they relieve part of the burden of developing and implementing distributed-memory parallel algorithms in an efficient and portable way.In increasingly larger, more heterogeneous clusters of computers, these models appear as a way to maintain and enhance more complex algorithms. However, task-based programming models lack the flexibility and the features that are necessary to express in an elegant and compact way scalable algorithms that rely on advanced communication patterns. We show that the Sequential Task Flow paradigm can be extended to write compact yet efficient and scalable routines for linear algebra computations. Although, this work focuses on dense General Matrix Multiplication, the proposed features enable the implementation of more complex algorithms. We describe the implementation of these features and of the resulting GEMM operation. Finally, we present an experimental analysis on two homogeneous supercomputers showing that our approach is competitive up to 32,768 CPU cores with state-of-the-art libraries and may outperform them for some problem dimensions. Although our code can use GPUs straightforwardly, we do not deal with this case because it implies other issues which are out of the scope of this work.

Abstract: Animal aggregation, particularly in large-bodied species, is both a fascinating and intriguing phenomenon. Here we analyzed the overwintering behavior of the European catfish, Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758, the largest freshwater fish in Europe. By tracking 47 subadults and adults in a shallow lake in southeastern France, we reported a consistent aggregative behavior across four successive winters. By implementing time series analysis and Cox proportional hazard models, we investigated the dynamics of these aggregations (formation, stability, dislocation), and the factors that govern it, whether external (temperature, time of the day) or specific to the fish (size, key individuals). These aggregations lasted 1.5–2 months and mainly took place in a single small 4 m-deep area whose environmental conditions (temperature, oxygen, substrate) did not differ from other parts of the lake. In some periods during winter, all tagged fish were aggregated, which suggests that a large proportion of the lake population gathered there. Low temperatures (below 9 °C) triggered the formation of aggregations. They became more stable with decreasing temperatures, while individuals more frequently left the aggregation, preferentially at dusk and at night, when temperatures increased. The largest individuals swam more frequently back and forth to the aggregation. Irrespective of their size, some individuals consistently arrived earlier in the aggregation in winter and left later. This predictable seasonal grouping of individuals and, more generally, the knowledge provided by such studies on how species use space have important operational value and are useful for species conservation as well as for species control.

Abstract: International audience; In conventional domain adaptation for speaker diarization, a large collection of annotated conversations from the target domain is required. In this work, we propose a novel continual training scheme for domain adaptation of an end-to-end speaker diarization system, which processes one conversation at a time and benefits from full self-supervision thanks to pseudo-labels. The qualities of our method allow for autonomous adaptation (e.g. of a voice assistant to a new household), while also avoiding permanent storage of possibly sensitive user conversations. We experiment extensively on the 11 domains of the DIHARD III corpus and show the effectiveness of our approach with respect to a pre-trained baseline, achieving a relative 17% performance improvement. We also find that data augmentation and a well-defined target domain are key factors to avoid divergence and to benefit from transfer.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we show how to estimate the normals of a 3D surface from a minimum of two views, assuming that the poses of a calibrated camera are perfectly known. For each pair of image points, the normal at the corresponding 3D point is expressed in function of the local gradients of the grey level, whatever the type of image formation (orthogonal or perspective projection). As an application, this allows us to fully estimate the inter-image homography, which not only depends on the relative pose between views, but also on the local orientation of the surface. Hence, the photo-consistency between patches from two images, which is the basis of the so-called "plane-sweeping" method, is improved. Experiments on synthetic and real data validate our approach.

Abstract: Dynamics and uncertainty are essential features of real-life argumentation, and many recent studies have focused on integrating both aspects into Dung’s well-known abstract argumentation frameworks (AFs). This paper proposes a combination of the two lines of research through a well-behaved logical tool: dynamic logic of propositional assignments (DL-PA). Our results show that the main reasoning tasks of virtually all existing formalisms qualitatively representing uncertainty about AFs are encodable in DL-PA. Moreover, the same tool is also useful for capturing dynamic structures, such as control AFs, as well as for developing more refined forms of argumentative communication under uncertainty.

Abstract: We propose a new method, dubbed One Class Signed Distance Function (OCSDF), to perform One Class Classification (OCC) by provably learning the Signed Distance Function (SDF) to the boundary of the support of any distribution. The distance to the support can be interpreted as a normality score, and its approximation using 1-Lipschitz neural networks provides robustness bounds against l2 adversarial attacks, an under-explored weakness of deep learning-based OCC algorithms. As a result, OCSDF comes with a new metric, certified AUROC, that can be computed at the same cost as any classical AUROC. We show that OCSDF is competitive against concurrent methods on tabular and image data while being way more robust to adversarial attacks, illustrating its theoretical properties. Finally, as exploratory research perspectives, we theoretically and empirically show how OCSDF connects OCC with image generation and implicit neural surface parametrization. Abstract: International audience; In higher education, many academic support programs intend to enhance the student success. Some of them particularly focus on first generation students. This is the case of an innovative serious game entitled "Success" which aims at fostering awareness about contributing factors of success. The game proposes to embody a coach and guide a virtual student during his/her first semester. In this fictional universe, the virtual students are subject to daily events, invitations, professional/associative/cultural activities and school responsibilities. The coach's mission consists in helping them to self-organize and achieve what is expected to succeed including a healthy way of life. To that end, the coach must give them some advice and suggest to balance academic work and privacy. Our contribution focuses on the design process to create interactive and educational scenarios embedded in this serious game. It presents a model to describe different profiles of virtual students and indicators related to what can be considered as a healthy way of life. The model we propose allows to create a library of virtual students that the players can guide on the way of success.

Abstract: International audience; The use of psychotropics during the COVID-19 pandemic has raised two questions, in order of importance: first, what changes should be made to pharmacological treatments prescribed to mental health patients? Secondly, are there any positive side effects of these substances against SARS-CoV-2? Our aim was to analyze usage safety of psychotropics during COVID-19; therefore, herein, we have studied: (i) the risk of symptomatic complications of COVID-19 associated with the use of these drugs, notably central nervous system activity depression, QTc interval enlargement and infectious and thromboembolic complications; (ii) the risk of mistaking the iatrogenic impact of psychotropics with COVID-19 symptoms, causing diagnostic error. Moreover, we provided a summary of the different information available today for these risks, categorized by mental health disorder, for the following: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, ADHD, sleep disorders and suicidal risk. The matter of psychoactive substance use during the pandemic is also analyzed in this paper, and guideline websites and publications for psychotropic treatments in the context of COVID-19 are referenced during the text, so that changes on those guidelines and eventual interaction between psychotropics and COVID-19 treatment medication can be reported and studied. Finally, we also provide a literature review of the latest known antiviral properties of psychotropics against SARS-CoV-2 as complementary information.

Abstract: We consider the long-term dynamics of the vanishing stepsize subgradient method in the case when the objective function is neither smooth nor convex. We assume that this function is locally Lipschitz and path differentiable, i.e., admits a chain rule. Our study departs from other works in the sense that we focus on the behavoir of the oscillations, and to do this we use closed measures. We recover known convergence results, establish new ones, and show a local principle of oscillation compensation for the velocities. Roughly speaking, the time average of gradients around one limit point vanishes. Abstract: Biscriptuality is the ability to write in two different writing systems. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of biscriptuality on graphomotor coordination dynamics in right-handed adults. Thirty-four French monoscriptuals and 34 French-Arabic biscriptual participants traced series of loops in two writing directions and in two directions of rotation. We found that biscriptuals displayed a general advantage over monoscriptuals in terms of tracing frequency, while both groups displayed a preference for the left-to-right direction. These results provide novel evidence on the effects of writing direction and type of expertise on graphomotor performance by showing that biscriptuality could be an asset. Abstract: Analysing large numbers of brain samples can reveal minor, but statistically and biologically relevant variations in brain morphology that provide critical insights into animal behaviour, ecology and evolution. So far, however, such analyses have required extensive manual effort, which considerably limits the scope for comparative research. Here we used micro-CT imaging and deep learning to perform automated analyses of 3D image data from 187 honey bee and bumblebee brains. We revealed strong inter-individual variations in total brain size that are consistent across colonies and species, and may underpin behavioural variability central to complex social organisations. In addition, the bumblebee dataset showed a significant level of lateralization in optic and antennal lobes, providing a potential explanation for reported variations in visual and olfactory learning. Our fast, robust and user-friendly approach holds considerable promises for carrying out large-scale quantitative neuroanatomical comparisons across a wider range of animals. Ultimately, this will help address fundamental unresolved questions related to the evolution of animal brains and cognition.Author SummaryBees, despite their small brains, possess a rich behavioural repertoire and show significant variations among individuals. In social bees this variability is key to the division of labour that maintains their complex social organizations, and has been linked to the maturation of specific brain areas as a result of development and foraging experience. This makes bees an ideal model for understanding insect cognitive functions and the neural mechanisms that underlie them. However, due to the scarcity of comparative data, the relationship between brain neuro-architecture and behavioural variance remains unclear. To address this problem, we developed an AI-based approach for automated analysis of brain images and analysed an unprecedentedly large dataset of honey bee and bumblebee brains. Through this process, we were able to identify previously undescribed anatomical features that correlate with known behaviours, supporting recent evidence of lateralized behaviour in foraging and pollination. Our method is open-source, easily accessible online, user-friendly, fast, accurate, and robust to different species, enabling large-scale comparative analyses across the animal kingdom. This includes investigating the impact of external stressors such as environmental pollution and climate change on cognitive development, helping us understand the mechanisms underlying the cognitive abilities of animals and the implications for their survival and adaptation.

Abstract: International audience; The purpose of this study is to optimize the design of racing wheelchairs to improve the performances of the athletes. The design of manual wheelchair allows athletes to express their full potential. Two models have then been created. The first one to compute the optimal position of the shoulder of the athlete relatively to the wheelchair to obtain the maximal wheelchair speed for long distance races. The second one was designed to represent the 100 m race and to optimize the pelvis position of the athlete on the wheelchair to reduce the time to reach 100 m. Our model quantified the maximal speed reached by the wheelchair to 32 km/h and the optimal time to 14.35 s. To obtain these performances, the athlete would be in a lying position, with the vertical position of the pelvis centre close to the vertical position of the shoulder. The second program also returned the optimal speed curve of the wheelchair during the 100 m race. The coaches could then use the optimal acceleration curve found in this study to match the acceleration of the wheelchair of their athlete.

Abstract: International audience; The engineering process of systems deployed in critical domains (e.g., automotive) advocates for early-stage integrated analysis of safety and security concerns, given their mutual influence. Specifically, in the design phase, safety and security requirements undergo a transition to the system architectural design across different granular and conceptual representations. However, such an enrichment process is often complex and lacks preliminary guidance to consistently break down high-level system specifications and requirements into intricate architecture and deployment. In particular, engineers require further support to interpret diverse system, safety, and security expertise and facilitate the consistent passage of knowledge pertaining to these disciplines for automated analysis. To this end, we propose an approach to facilitate the joint design and formal analysis of system safety and security concerns. Notably, the approach aims for a three-layered system modeling, integrating mission, functional and component views, and also, reusable libraries of pre-defined safety and security properties, specialize-able across them. We couple the Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) paradigm and Formal Methods (FM) for the hierarchical-precise modeling, formal interpretation, and verification of model views w.r.t. the desired properties. The accompanying tool-chain support for approach instantiation builds upon Papyrus as a modeling framework and Rodin as a formal-based tool for verification. The proposed approach is illustrated via a Connected-Driving Vehicles (CDVs) use case.

Abstract: International audience; Biscriptuality is the ability to read and write using two scripts. Despite the increasing number of biscripters, this phenomenon remains poorly understood. Here, we focused on investigating graphomotor processing in French–Arabic biscripters. We chose the French and Arabic alphabets because they have comparable visuospatial complexity and linguistic features, but differ dramatically in their graphomotor characteristics. In a first experiment we describe the graphomotor features of the two alphabets and showed that while Arabic and Latin letters are produced with the same velocity and fluency, Arabic letters require more pen lifts, contain more right-to-left strokes and clockwise curves, and take longer to write than Latin letters. These results suggest that Arabic and Latin letters are produced via different motor patterns. In a second experiment we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to ask whether writing the two scripts relies upon partially distinct or fully overlapping neural networks, and whether the elements of the previously described handwriting network are recruited to the same extent by the two scripts. We found that both scripts engaged the so-called “writing network”, but that within the network, Arabic letters recruited the left superior parietal lobule (SPL) and the left primary motor cortex (M1) more strongly than Latin letters. Both regions have previously been identified as holding scale-invariant representations of letter trajectories. Arabic and Latin letters also activated distinct regions that do not belong to the writing network. Complementary analyses indicate that the differences observed between scripts at the neural level could be driven by the specific graphomotor features of each script. Overall, our results indicate that particular features of the practiced scripts can lead to different motor organization at both the behavioral and brain levels in biscripters.

Abstract: A bipolar charge transport model with two levels of traps (shallow and deep traps) is employed to describe and investigate the dynamic behavior of the space charge in low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This kind of model requires some initial experimental conditions alongside a set of parameters. An optimization method is used in order to provide the best precision for model parameters. Furthermore, the sensitivity of these parameters has been analyzed using an approach based on Sobol's method. In essence, this paper proposes a specific protocol that contributes to producing a global set of parameters able to provide the best approximate fit between experimental and simulated results. Net charge density is measured by the pulse electro-acoustic method (PEA) along with what is known as external charging current measurements. The simulated data are obtained by a bipolar charge transport model, which is developed for low-sensity polyethylene.

Abstract: International audience; Because drowsiness is a major cause in vehicle accidents, its automated detection is critical. Scale-free temporal dynamics is known to be typical of physiological and body rhythms. The present work quantifies the benefits of applying a recent and original multivariate selfsimilarity analysis to several modalities of polysomnographic measurements (heart rate, blood pressure, electroencephalogram and respiration), from the MIT-BIH Polysomnographic Database, to better classify drowsiness-related sleep stages. Clinical relevance-This study shows that probing jointly temporal dynamics amongst polysomnographic measurements, with a proposed original multivariate multiscale approach, yields a gain of above 5% in the Area-under-Curve quantifying drowsiness-related sleep stage classification performance compared to univariate analysis.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we consider the problem of allocation of Emergency Vehicles (EVs) to Rescue Centers (RCs). The objective is to improve the operational response of the Fire and Rescue Services (SDIS) in France. More precisely, we focus on the mid-term management, and on the process of redeployment of EVs in RCs according to the evolution of requirements. At this level of decision, we do not have information on accidents. We only used the available information on the simultaneity of requirements. Based on the Hurwicz criterion, we develop a mathematical model and an iterative algorithm to solve it. The proposed approach takes into account both the uncertainty on the occurrence sequence of accidents, and the attitude towards optimization of the decision maker (DM). An illustration from the DM’s point of view is presented. It shows that this uncertainty significantly impacts the deployment of EVs. Results show that the proposed approach has an efficient resolution time for real size problems.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the neural principles governing taste perception in species that bear economic importance or serve as research models for other sensory modalities constitutes a strategic goal. Such is the case of the honey bee (Apis mellifera), which is environmentally and socioeconomically important, given its crucial role as pollinator agent in agricultural landscapes and which has served as a traditional model for visual and olfactory neurosciences and for research on communication, navigation, and learning and memory. Here we review the current knowledge on honey bee gustatory receptors to provide an integrative view of peripheral taste detection in this insect, highlighting specificities and commonalities with other insect species. We describe behavioral and electrophysiological responses to several tastant categories and relate these responses, whenever possible, to known molecular receptor mechanisms. Overall, we adopted an evolutionary and comparative perspective to understand the neural principles of honey bee taste and define key questions that should be answered in future gustatory research centered on this insect.

Abstract: International audience; Housing under a shared housing organisation enables frail elderly persons to live in a semi autonomous way, thanks to cooperation between residents and an assistant. The social organization of this new type of housing also has an impact on the social participation of users. This article is based on a pilot study and deals with the benefits of digital technologies and “ambient intelligence” used to answer the needs of such a way of living. The pilot study was carried out in a house shared by 6 co-tenants. The qualitative method used first consisted in a characterisation of the 6 inhabitants. This was followed by semi-structured interviews about their sensed needs, and a focus group, with 5 of the 6 co-tenants, in order to gain an initial consensus about needs. This result was confronted to the demands of the assistants, collected through interviews. A usage scenario was developed in a smart home (Maison Intelligente de Blagnac). This scenario was performed by three of the inhabitants and followed by a second focus group and a narrative interview with the assistants and the designers of the shared house. This article reports the method which was carried out and the needs expressed by the co-tenants.

Abstract: International audience; Clinical decision support based on artificial intelligence (AI) methods have increasingly been employed in medical applications to support medical diagnosis. Developing efficient AI methods, however, depends necessarily on the availability of sufficiently large amount of data to provide reliable results. But, in medicine, it is not always possible to find sufficient amount of real data on all pathologies, particularly, for rare diseases. This paper proposes a methodological framework for generating synthetic data using data augmentation techniques combined with epidemiological profiles. It focuses on Uveitis, a rare disease in ophthalmology, which is difficult to diagnose because of the disparity in prevalence of its etiologies. The generated synthetic data have been qualitatively validated by specialist ophthalmologists and quantitatively tested using machine learning methods. Results show that, of a randomly selected sample of the generated data, more than 55% were assessed as good or excellent, which is very promising for generating synthetic, validated as near-real, medical data for rare diseases. They also show that the proposed framework is consistent in generating synthetic data, for Uveitis pathology, of different dataset sizes, achieving more than than 80% diagnosis prediction accuracy for 2000 patient records or larger.

Abstract: International audience; Whether eye-movements deficits are causal in reading disorders (RD) or rather a consequence of linguistic processing difficulty experienced by disabled readers has been extensively debated.Since RD are frequently comorbid with the Neurofibromatosis type1 (NF1), children with NF1 were used as a comparison group for children with dyslexia in this study.Eye movements were recorded while 21 dyslexic, 20 NF1, and 20 typically developing children performed an oculomotor lateralized bisection task. In this experiment, we manipulated the type of stimulus - discrete (words and strings of hashes) versus continuous (solid lines) - and the visual field where the stimulus was displayed (left vs right). The results showed that (1) only proficient readers (TD and NF1 without RD) showed fully developed oculomotor mechanisms for efficient reading, with a clear preferred viewing location located to the left of the word's centre in both visual fields, and fine-tuned saccade targeting guided by the between-character space information and (2) NF1 poor readers mirrored the dyslexic eye movement behaviour, with less accuracy and more variability in saccadic programming, no sensitivity to the discreteness of the stimuli, particularly in the left visual field. We concluded that disruption to oculomotor behaviour reflectsthe fact that many of the processes involved in reading are not yet automatized for children with RD, independently of NF1. This suggests that the differences in saccade targeting strategy between children with and without RD would be secondary consequences of their reduced reading experience.

Abstract: International audience; There are two primary investigative interview objectives: gathering information to determine what happened and who did it and assessing the witness’s reliability. The present study examined to what extent investigative interviewers gather investigation-relevant information (IRI) compared to interviewee details (ID) to assess witness reliability. As part of a training course, 42 police officers participated as interviewers and mock witnesses by viewing a crime video. The interviews were recorded and rated for question type and question content through thematic analyses. IRI questions accounted for 78% of the questions asked, while ID questions accounted for 22% of the questions asked. The police officers assessed the way witnesses perceived this information and the attendant meta-processes and used more inappropriate questions than appropriate questions. These results help to elucidate the objectives of police interviews that should be considered when evaluating witness performances in laboratory settings and when developing effective interviewing protocols.

Abstract: This paper presents a formal development approach for designing interactive applications using a correct-by-construction approach. In this work, we propose a refinement strategy using model-view-controller (MVC) to structure and design Event-B formal models of the interactive application. The proposed MVC-based refinement strategy facilitates the development of an abstract model and a series of refined models by introducing the possible modes, controller’s behaviour and visual components of the interactive application while preserving the required interaction-related safety properties. To demonstrate the effectiveness, scalability, reliability and feasibility of our approach, we use a small example (from automotive domain) and real-life industrial case studies (from aviation). The entire development is realized in Event-B and the associated Rodin tool is used to analyse and verify the correctness of the formalized model. Finally, the developed Event-B models are used to generate source code using EB2ALL tool for going from the specification to the implementation of the interactive application.
