Initiation in heterogeneous energetic material (HEM) subjected to shock loading occurs due to the formation of hot spots. The criticality of the hot spots governs the initiation and sensitivity of HEMs. In porous energetic materials, collapse of pores under impact leads to the formation of hot spots. Depending on the size and strength of the hot spots chemical reaction can initiate. The criticality of the hot spots is dependent on the imposed shock load, void morphology and the type of energetic material. This work evaluates the relative importance of material constitutive and reactive properties on the criticality condition of spots. Using a scaling-based approach, the criticality criterion for cylindrical voids as a function of shock pressure, Ps and void diameter, Dvoid is obtained for two different energetic material HMX and TATB. It is shown that the criticality of different energetic materials is significantly dependent on their reactive properties.

In the present study, we investigate the effect of nucleus size and position, and the relative rheological properties of cytoplasm and nucleus, on cell recovery dynamics. Two nucleus sizes corresponding to that of neutrophil and lymphocyte are considered. Direct comparison between numerical simulations and experimental observation is made. Results indicate that the time scale ratio between the nucleus and cytoplasm plays an important role in cell recovery characteristics. Comparable time scales between the two cell components yield favorable agreement in recovery rates between numerical and experimental observations; disparate time scales, on the other hand, result recovery behavior and cell shapes inconsistent with experiments. Furthermore, it is found that the nucleus eccentricity exhibits minimum influence on all major aspects of the cell recovery characteristics. The present work offers additional evidence in support of the compound cell model for predicting the rheological behavior of leukocytes.

This paper is an extension of our previous work on simulation of complex phase front evolution in the diffusion-dominated situation. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite-volume method based on a second-order accurate central-difference scheme in conjunction with a two-step fractional-step procedure. The key aspects that need to be considered in developing such a solver are imposition of boundary conditions on the immersed boundaries and accurate discretization of the governing equation in cells that are cut by these boundaries. A new interpolation procedure is presented which allows systematic development of a spatial discretization scheme that preserves the second-order spatial accuracy of the underlying solver. The presence of immersed boundaries alters the conditioning of the linear operators and this can slow down the iterative solution of these equations. The convergence is accelerated by using a preconditioned conjugate gradient method where the preconditioner takes advantage of the structured nature of the underlying mesh. The accuracy and fidelity of the solver is validated and the ability of the solver to simulate flows with very complicated immersed boundaries is demonstrated. The method will be useful in studying the effects of fluid flow on the evolution of complex solid-liquid phase boundaries.
