Applying the principle of least dissipation rate to the biaxial shear geometry leads to the prediction that there are preferred shear band patterns according to the aspect ratio of the shear cell. By means of the Mohr‐Coulomb angle these patterns can be classified in terms of two integer indices. They are expected to have a certain life time which is particularly long for low index configurations. This explains the temporal fluctuations of the stress ratio in “steady state flow,” which so far were believed to be random.
