A iluminação pública (IP) desempenha um papel vital na dinâmica das cidades. Ela proporciona condições para a realização de diversas atividades noturnas, além de ser um elemento fundamental para a segurança pública. Entretanto, um sistema de iluminação pública traz diversas preocupações para governos municipais, as quais estão associadas aos gastos com energia elétrica e com a necessidade de prover um serviço de iluminação de qualidade. Contudo, inovações tecnológicas recentes têm proporcionado avanços que tem como um de seus mais significativos resultados a redução dos gastos com IP. Sistemas de iluminação inteligentes poderão, no futuro, agregar soluções de internet das coisas (IoT) e prover diferentes serviços urbanos. Esse artigo tem como objetivo analisar sistemas de iluminação pública inteligentes, considerando a possibilidade de melhoria da gestão da IP e as potencialidades de integração de serviços urbanos dentro do contexto de cidades inteligentes.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the influence of fasting and refeeding on body condition, gut physiology and microbiota in reared O. mykiss. Ninety-six fish were randomly allotted among three groups subjected to different feeding plan: C (control, fed for 5 weeks); R (restricted ration over 3 weeks followed by 2 weeks feeding); F (fasted over 3 weeks followed by 2 weeks feeding) in a well’s fresh water flow-through rearing plan. Sampling occurred at 0, 1, 2, 4, 7, 14 days during the refeeding period. At day 0 and throughout the feeding period until day 14, the weight of the fish was significantly affected by the feeding restriction. Feed deprivation reduced significantly the viscerosomatic and hepatosomatic indexes. Brush border membrane enzymes’ specific activity was modulated by feeding regimes until day 7, to level in all experimental groups at day 14. Understanding the natural and forced variability of the general circulation of the atmosphere and its drivers is one of the grand challenges in climate science. In particular, it is of paramount importance to understand to what extent the systematic error of global climate models affects the processes driving such variability. This is done by performing a set of simulations (ROCK experiments) with an intermediate complexity atmospheric model (SPEEDY), in which the Rocky Mountains orography is modified (increased or decreased) to influence the structure of the North Pacific jet stream. For each of these modified-orography experiments, the climatic response to idealized sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies of varying intensity in the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) region is studied. ROCK experiments are characterized by variations in the Pacific jet stream intensity whose extension encompasses the spread of the systematic error found in state-of-the-art climate models. When forced with ENSO-like idealised anomalies, they exhibit a non-negligible sensitivity in the response pattern over the Pacific North American region, indicating that a change/bias in the model mean state can affect the model response to ENSO. It is found that the classical Rossby wave train response generated by ENSO is more meridionally oriented when the Pacific jet stream is weaker, while it exhibits a more zonal structure when the jet is stronger. Rossby wave linear theory, used here to interpret the results, suggests that a stronger jet implies a stronger waveguide, which traps Rossby waves at a lower latitude, favouring a more zonally oriented propagation of the tropically induced Rossby waves. The shape of the dynamical response to ENSO, determined by changes in the intensity of the Pacific Jet, affects in turn the ENSO impacts on surface temperature and precipitation over Central and North America. Furthermore, a comparison of the SPEEDY results with CMIP6 models behaviour suggests a wider applicability of the results to more resources-demanding, complete climate GCMs, opening up to future works focusing on the relationship between Pacific jet misrepresentation and response to external forcing in fully-fledged GCMs.

Systemic retinoids are among the most prescribed drugs in dermatology, thanks to their activity as proliferation modulators and keratinisation normalisers. Common side effects such as blood lipid disorders, xerosis and photosensitivity are well established and usually dose dependent. Conversely, retinoid-associated ocular disturbances have been reported, yet with differences in terms of frequency and manifestations As data regarding a potential correlation with refractive errors are heterogenous and have not been previously thoroughly addressed, we performed a systematic review of the literature with the aim of comprehensively evaluating the current evidence regarding retinoid-associated myopia in dermatologic patients.A systematic review of the literature was carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines. A search on MEDLINE, Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane Library was conducted using the MeSH terms: retinoid, isotretinoin, acitretin, bexarotene, etretinate, alitretinoin, myopia, refractive errors, via the Boolean term AND. Only manuscripts in English were considered, there was no restriction on type of article. Animal research and in vitro studies were excluded.Six articles were finally included in this systematic review. One well designed prospective study was able to show a slight myopic shift in the first six months, but id did not evaluate further development of the refractive error nor the effects of drug discontinuation. Another prospective study, with a smaller sample size showed no myopic progression at 12 months. Two case reports showed a myopic shift after two weeks from therapy start. Another case report showed a myopic shift associated with narrowing of the anterior chamber after one week from therapy start. Finally a large retrospective study based on spontaneous reporting systems and world's literature classified myopia as a certain side effect.Considering the current literature, it is not possible to define a clear correlation between the use of retinoids and the development or worsening of myopia. Some studies suggest that retinoids may cause a myopic shift and the pathophysiologyical mechanism is supported by some animal and in vitro studies, but there is a lack of large prospective and well-controlled studies. In case of ocular disturbances after retinoid use a prompt ophthalmological referral is advisable and in case of the detection of a myopic refractive error a relationship to retinoids should be ruled out, considering also other possible causes such as age and previous refractive status.

In the present work we showcase a multidisciplinary study aimed at defining the ongoing deformation processes due to fault propagation and folding at the Tsaishi fold, western Caucasus (Georgia).Our approach consists in the integration of geomorphological observations, field geological-structural data and seismic reflection sections, allowing us to reconstruct a 3D model of this active fold, from depth to surface.The Tsaishi fold is an anticline located at the southwestern tip of the Rioni Basin uplifted area, at the foothill of the Greater Caucasus. The folding process that has been recognized started at the beginning of the Middle Miocene, although preliminary data suggest the possibility of an initial local uplift in the Oligocene. Considering field observations, we suggest that the folding process continues nowadays, giving rise to a south-verging anticline, as shown by upwarped late Quaternary river deposits.Integrating seismic reflection sections and field observations, we show that the fold backlimb is affected by three main back-thrusts, whereas, based on seismic sections, at the foot of the forelimb a main north-dipping thrust is very close to the surface. Where the thrust reaches the surface, we recognized the presence of a 13-km-long fault scarp (or fold scarp), where historical seismological data locate the epicenter of the strongest earthquake of the area, with Ms 6.0, the so-called Tsaishi earthquake of 1614 CE.

We present new morphostructural and geophysical data to discuss the recent activity of the Broni-Sarmato structure, an 18 km-long outcropping section of the north-verging Stradella thrust, located 50 km south of Milan, along the pede-Apennine compressional front in the rear of the Emilia Arc. An accurate seismic hazard assessment of this structure is necessary due to the presence in the area of widespread housing settlements, industries, lifeline infrastructures and large towns. Along the fault scarp we quantified the offset of recent river deposits by GPS, DTM and drone surveys; the scarp height values range from 6 to 23 m. Respect to previous works, we also better defined the geometry in plan view of the scarp; it is not continuous along the area, being characterized by several left- and right-stepping segments. We also performed new geoelectrical surveys across the scarp that suggest the presence of a wide zone of shallow deformation along the Broni-Sarmato fault trace. These deformations could correspond to fractures that act as preferential flow path for deep saline waters and facilitate the flow towards the surface. Horizontal interruption and vertical dislocation of a shallow, high resistivity layer also revealed by geoelectrical surveys, suggest that the Broni-Sarmato fault possibly produced shallow deformation along vertical and inclined zones. These data, supported by seismic activity, although quite sparse, can be interpreted as evidence of late Pleistocene-Holocene tectonic activity of this section of the Stradella thrust.

Mt Etna, located on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, is a basaltic stratovolcano with a volcanotectonic evolution of 500 ka, characterized by a wide horse-shoe-shaped depression on its eastern flank, called Valle del Bove. The study area is located near the northern escarpment of this depression, where it is possible to recognize the 1971 eruptive fissure system, generated by the lateral propagation of a feeder dike. The purpose of this research is to thoroughly examine the area affected by dike-induced surface deformation, which is marked by a textbook example of a graben structure produced by dike propagation. Due to the presence of meters-thick, recent pyroclastic deposits covering the study area and the difficult logistics, the main outcrops are inaccessible for classical field data collection. To overcome this limitation, we used the following methodology based on the analysis of photogrammetry-derived models.We first designed a structural map related to the development of the 1971 dike-induced structures, using two sets of historical aerial photos characterized by a 2400 DPI resolution. Particularly, the 20 selected images, equally divided between 1954 and 1983, have been processed using the software Agisoft Metashape to produce two referenced orthomosaics with a resolution of 29 and 19.5 cm/pixel, respectively. By comparing the obtained orthomosaics, we identified and mapped all the normal faults associated with the 1971 dike intrusion. This structural map has been used to organize the subsequent drone surveys, performed by a DJI Phantom 4 Pro equipped with RTK high-precision technology, which allowed us to collect 656 pictures with an overlap and a side lap of 85% and 80% respectively. Afterward, we processed the drone-collected photos by using Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry techniques, so as to obtain a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and a 3D Tiled Model, with a resolution of 11 and 5.48 cm/pixel, respectively. Such models have been used to analyze in detail the graben faults, especially the ones along the Valle del Bove steep wall.The analysis of photogrammetry-derived models over different time windows enabled us to individuate 14 lineaments within the study area, 2 eruptive fissures with a NE-SW strike, and 13 fault scarps associated with the dip-slip faults of the graben. Finally, thanks to the 3D Tiled Model obtained from drone-captured pictures, we were able to quantify the dip direction and dip angles of the graben faults, their vertical offsets, and the graben width related to the elevation.

Accurate predictions of climate variations at the decadal timescale are of great interest for decision-making, planning and adaptation strategies for different socio-economic sectors. Notably, decadal predictions have rapidly evolved during the last 15 years and are now produced operationally worldwide. The majority of the studies assessing the skill of decadal prediction systems focus on time-mean anomalies of standard meteorological variables, such as annual mean near-surface air temperature and precipitation. However, the predictability of extreme events frequency may differ substantially from the predictability of multi-year annual or seasonal means. Predicting the frequency of extreme events at different timescales is of major importance, since they are associated with severe impacts on various natural and human systems. In the current study we evaluate the capability of state-of-the-art decadal prediction systems to predict the frequency of temperature extremes in Europe. More specifically, we assess the skill of a multi-model ensemble from the Decadal Climate Prediction Project (DCPP, 163 ensemble members from 12 models in total) to forecast the number of days belonging to heatwaves episodes during summer (June–August). We find statistically significant predictive skill over Europe, except for the United Kingdom and a large part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, most of which is associated with the long-term warming trend. We are progressing with the evaluation of other statistical aspects of extreme events, including warm and cold episodes during winter, and we are also investigating whether there is predictive skill beyond that stemming from the external forcing.

The Northern Volcanic Zone is a tectonically and volcanically active area, of approximately 220 x 97 km, that accommodates the plate spreading in Northern Iceland. Given its extension, it is clear the need to enhance remote-sensing methodologies that give the possibility to obtain a reliable depiction of the main structures that characterize the area. Here we present the study of the Fremrinamar rift, which has a length of 13 km and a width between 8 to 9 km. To cover its entire extension we used a set of 983 historical aerial photos, freely available through the National Land Survey of Iceland. These images were acquired in 3 different years (1983, 1990, 1991), at the same flight elevation (5486 m a.s.l.), and are characterized by 60% of overlap. Using Agisoft Metashape (v. 1.7.1) we obtain 3 Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and 3 orthomosaics with a maximum resolution of 2.14 and 0.52 m/pixel respectively. We tested different quality combinations for both photo alignment and dense cloud processing, identifying a medium one as the best compromise between good-quality results (similar resolution levels as the one obtained with high-quality parameters) and relatively short-processing times (4-79 min. to reconstruct orthomosaics, 2-5 min. for DEMs). We then outline the geometry of the rift zone through mapping in a GIS environment at a 1:2500 scale. We identified 2528 extension fractures, 1785 normal fault scarps, and 207 eruptive fissures and distinguished between W- and E-dipping normal faults. The recognised structures show an overall strike of N-S to NNE-SSW, with minor values between NE-SW, and length values ranging from 4 to 7000 m. The highest length values are associated with normal faults, while extension fractures are characterized by shorter segments. Both normal faults and extension fractures show the highest length values in association with N-S strikes. E-dipping normal fault scarps show predominant dip-direction towards E-ESE, with minor ENE; W-dipping normal fault scarps dip mostly towards W-WNW, with minor WSW values. The Fremrinamar rift is characterised by a higher frequency of structures, especially eruptive fissures, in its southern and central portions (where volcanic centres are mainly located), while the northern one is defined by a decreased number of structures which also show a rotation in their strike values toward NNW-SSE. These results were finally integrated with field surveys over key areas, allowing us to evaluate and confirm the integrity and consistency of the data collected on the models.This methodology gave us the possibility to reconstruct the geometry of an entire rift in high detail, without going to the field and with few costs (since the images are freely accessible the only costs derive from the selected software). Moreover, the presence of different sets of aerial photos, taken during different years, provides the opportunity to evaluate the temporal evolution of some key areas of the rift.

Investigating active tectonics and the structural style of potentially-seismogenic structures at the outer front of active orogenic belts is particularly challenging when the frontal structures are buried and slowly deforming. This is the case of the blind fold-and-thrust belts surrounding the Padanian foreland of Northern Italy and developing across one of the most populated and industrialized Italian territories. In this paper, we focus on the seismogenic role of the Stradella thrust and its possible involvement in the activity of the buried Emilia arc, through a 3D geometric, kinematic, and seismotectonic reconstruction of the overall system. Dykes (Mode I extension fractures) supply magma from deep reservoirs to the surface and subject to their propagation paths, they can sometimes reach the surface and feed volcanic eruptions. Most of the times they mechanically stall in the heterogeneous crust or deflect through pre-existing fractures forming sills. Although several studies have explored dyking in heterogeneous regimes, the conditions under which dykes propagate in glacial-volcanotectonic regimes remain unclear.Here, we coupled field observations with FEM numerical modelling using the software COMSOL Multiphysics (v5.6) to explore the mechanical and geometrical conditions that promote (or not), dyke-sill propagation in glacial-tectonic conditions. We used as a field example the Stardalur cone sheet-laccolith system, located in the Esja peninsula proximal to the western rift zone. The laccolith is composed of several vertical dykes that bend into sills and form a unique stacked sill ‘flower structure’. We modelled a heterogeneous crustal segment composed of lavas (top) and hyaloclastites (bottom). We then studied the emplacement of a dyke with varied overpressure values (Po = 1-10 MPa) and regional extension (Fe = 0.5-3 MPa) loading conditions at the lava/hyaloclastite contact. In the second stage, we added an ice cap as a body load to explore dyking subject to unloading due to glacier thickness variations (0-1 km).Our results have shown that the presence of the ice cap can affect the dyke-sill propagation and the spatial accumulation of tensile and shear stresses below the cap. The observed field structure in non-glacial regimes has been formed either due to the mechanical contrast (Young’s modulus) of the studied contact, a compressional regime due to pre-existing dyking or faulting, or finally, high overpressure values (Po ≥ 5 MPa). Instead, in a glacial regime, the local extensional stress field below the ice cap encourages the formation of the laccolith when the ice cap becomes thinner (lower vertical loads). Our models can be applied to universal volcanoes related to glacier thickness variation and sill emplacement.

The frontal thrusts and folds of the northern Apennines - Italy - are mainly covered under the alluvial deposits of the Po Plain. Some of these structures show geological evidence of Late Quaternary activity, thus posing the need for an accurate seismic hazard assessment due to widespread housing settlements, industries, lifeline infrastructures, and large towns. We present new morphostructural, geophysical, and seismological data to discuss the recent activity of the Broni-Sarmato fault, an 18 km-long outcropping section of the north-verging Stradella thrust, located 50 km south of Milan, along the Pede-Apennine thrust front (PTF) in the rear of the Emilia Arc thrust system. The new geoelectrical surveys across the fault scarp show deformation of the shallow deposits. Background: In advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, without activating mutations and with PD-L1≥50%, Pembrolizumab monotherapy is the therapeutic standard in Europe. Objective: To evaluate retrospectively the safety and efficacy of this drug and to investigate potential prognostic factors in daily clinical practice. Methods: From September 2017 to September 2019, 205 consecutive patients from 14 Italian Medical Oncology Units were enrolled in the study. Gender, Age (> or 90% or Results: At a median follow-up of 15.2 months, median progression-free and overall survival (mPFS and mOS) were 9.2 months (95% C.I., 4.8-13.5) and 15.9 months (95% C.I., not yet evaluable), respectively. Patients with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG-PS) 2 had mPFS of 2.8 months (95% C.I., 2.1-3.4) and mOS of 3.9 months (95% C.I., 2.5-5.3). Patients with liver metastases at diagnosis had an mPFS of 3.2 months (95% C.I., 0.6-5.8) and an mOS of 6.0 months (95% C.I., 3.7-8.4). At multivariate analysis for OS gender, ECOG-PS 2, and presence of liver metastases were independent prognostic factors. Conclusion: Patients with ECOG-PS 2 derived little benefit from the use of first-line pembrolizumab. In patients with liver metastases, the association of pembrolizumab with platinum-based chemotherapy could be a better option than pembrolizumab alone.

We present a detailed simulation study on plasmonic-organic hybrid electro-optic modulators based on coupled symmetric or asymmetric plasmonic slots. An electro-optic polymer is exploited as an active material, and the device is compatible with a silicon photonics platform. The proposed device operates at 1550 nm wavelength, typical of data center or long-haul telecommunication systems. The device performance in terms of area, plasmonic losses, optical bandwidth, intrinsic modulation bandwidth and energy dissipation are comparable to already proposed Mach-Zehnder solutions, but with potentially better extinction ratio, coupling losses due to photonic-plasmonic transitions, and flexibility in exploiting, without any performance penalty, asymmetric slots to shift the ON and OFF states bias. Finally, the bias dependence of the modulation chirp is investigated, comparing through and cross-coupling configurations.

Multiphysics modeling of a planar HgCdTe-based mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) focal plane array with $3\,\mu$ m-wide pixels enlightens the role of surface plasmon-polaritons observed in gold nanorods arranged on its illuminated face. Simulations indicate that the proposed plasmonic detector, which employs a $1\,\mu$ m-thick absorber layer, exhibits a reduction of diffusive inter-pixel crosstalk by more than one order of magnitude with respect to more conventional, non-plasmonic detectors with a $5\,\mu$ m-thick absorber layer, without penalizing responsivity and achieving increased detectivity in the whole MWIR band by taking advantage of the absorber volume reduction.

This work investigates the spectral quantum efficiency and inter-pixel crosstalk of a MWIR-LWIR dual band, HgCdTe-based focal plane array (FPA) photodetector (MWIR and LWIR stand for mid- and long-wavelength infrared bands). Pixels are $\text{10}\,\mu$ m-wide with truncated pyramid geometry and separated by deep trenches. Three-dimensional combined full-wave electromagnetic and electrical simulations in the drift-diffusion approximation allowed to describe the complex, standing-wave-like spectral features resulting from the light interference and diffraction due to the pixels and illuminating beam aperture. The inter-pixel crosstalk for the MWIR operation demonstrated to be very sensitive to the trench depth, in contrast to the LWIR electrooptical response, left almost unchanged. The present work also investigates the causes of performance worsening in the two IR bands when pixel pitch is reduced to $\text{5}\,\mu$ m, hence well below typical LWIR wavelengths and close to the diffraction limited operation.

The recent advances in machine learning algorithms have boosted the application of these techniques to the field of condensed matter physics, in order e.g. to classify the phases of matter at equilibrium or to predict the real-time dynamics of a large class of physical models. Typically in these works, a machine learning algorithm is trained and tested on data coming from the same physical model. Here we demonstrate that unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques are able to predict phases of a non-exactly solvable model when trained on data of a solvable model. In particular, we employ a training set made by single-particle correlation functions of a non-interacting quantum wire and by using principal component analysis, k-means clustering, and convolutional neural networks we reconstruct the phase diagram of an interacting superconductor. We show that both the principal component analysis and the convolutional neural networks trained on the data of the non-interacting model can identify the topological phases of the interacting model with a high degree of accuracy. Our findings indicate that non-trivial phases of matter emerging from the presence of interactions can be identified by means of unsupervised and supervised techniques applied to data of non-interacting systems., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the most severe weather hazards in the tropics, causing many human deaths and substantial property loss. Therefore, it is always urgent to significantly reduce systematic errors that may hinder the accurate forecast of TC activity. To evaluate the ability of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC) forecast system to represent TC activity and to verify the feasibility of TCs forecast, we use a new version of the CMCC Seasonal Prediction System (SPS3.5), which configures with high spatial resolution (0.5 degrees) in the atmospheric component and a large (40) number of ensemble members. We compared SPS3.5 hindcasts from 1998 to 2016 July-September with observed TC tracks derived from the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS). To identify storms and track their trajectories in SPS3.5, we use the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) Tropical Cyclone tracking algorithm and set strict thresholds to ensure the authenticity of the captured TCs. We find that the SPS3.5 system captures the spatial distributions in the North Hemisphere (R~0.8) well, although it underestimates TCs' number magnitude, which relates to the model resolution and thresholds. TCs spatial distribution is best captured over the Pacific, where the largest peak season (August) is covered by our dataset, while lower-skill is shown over the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Indian Ocean. For TC variability, the model performs well only in the Western North Pacific (R up to 0.6). We collected drone data to quantify the kinematics at extensional fractures and normal faults, integrated this information with seismological data to reconstruct the stress field, and critically compared the results with previous fieldwork to assess the best practice. As a key site, we analyzed a sector of the northeast rift of Mt Etna, an area affected by continuous ground deformation linked to gravity sliding of the volcano's eastern flank and dike injections. The studied sector is characterized also by the existence of eruptive craters and fissures and lava flows. This work shows that this rift segment is affected by a series of NNE- to NE-striking, parallel extensional fractures characterized by an opening mode along an average N105.7∘ vector. The stress field is characterized by a σHmin trending northwest–southeast. Normal faults strike parallel to the extensional fractures. The extensional strain obtained by cumulating the net offset at extensional fractures with the fault heave gives a stretching ratio of 1.003 in the northeastern part of the study area and 1.005 in the southwestern part. Given a maximum age of 1614 CE for the offset lavas, we obtained an extension rate of 1.9 cm yr−1 for the last 406 years. This value is consistent with the slip along the Pernicana Fault system, confirming that the NE rift structures accommodate the sliding of the eastern flank of the volcano.

Literature on microgreens, an emerging new functional food crop, remains limited. Further study on microgreens as a promising dietary component for potential use in diet-based disease prevention is, therefore, essential. Given that the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of mature licorice root material are well-documented, the objective of the present, preliminary study was to present licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) as a novel, edible fresh-food microgreen candidate. The effect of leaf, stem and root polyphenol extracts of 20-day old licorice microgreen seedlings on cell proliferation and viability of Caco-2 cells (simulating the intestinal epithelium), after pro-inflammatory induction of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was examined and then compared to the polyphenol, flavonoid and anti-radical activities of the respective tissue extracts. Root extracts contained a two-fold less polyphenol (including flavonoid) content compared to leaf extracts, but with a five-fold lower anti-radical scavenging activity. Only the root extracts provided functional protection in terms of preserving cell proliferation and viability of LPS-treated Caco-2 cells. Some protection was also afforded by the stems, but the young leaf material offered no anti-inflammatory protection. Results point to a differing composition of anti-inflammatory polyphenols between the root and leaf, suggesting that the protective efficacy of the root extracts (and to some degree, the stem extracts) resides in inhibiting the pro-inflammatory cascade and resultant cytotoxic effects as opposed to a direct anti-radical scavenging activity. Potential use of licorice as a microgreen is promising, but will necessitate further study.

Impaired autophagy, responsible for increased inflammation, constitutes a risk factor for the more severe COVID-19 outcomes. Spermidine (SPD) is a known autophagy modulator and supplementation for COVID-19 risk groups (including the elderly) is recommended. However, information on the modulatory effects of eugenol (EUG) is scarce. Therefore, the effects of SPD and EUG, both singularly and in combination, on autophagy were investigated using different cell lines (HBEpiC, SHSY5Y, HUVEC, Caco-2, L929 and U937). SPD (0.3 mM), EUG (0.2 mM) and 0.3 mM SPD + 0.2 mM EUG, significantly increased autophagy using the hallmark measure of LC3-II protein accumulation in the cell lines without cytotoxic effects. Using Caco-2 cells as a model, several crucial autophagy proteins were upregulated at all stages of autophagic flux in response to the treatments. This effect was verified by the activation/differentiation and migration of U937 monocytes in a three-dimensional reconstituted intestinal model (Caco-2, L929 and U937 cells). Comparable benefits of SPD, EUG and SPD + EUG in inducing autophagy were shown by the protection of Caco-2 and L929 cells against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation. SPD + EUG is an innovative dual therapy capable of stimulating autophagy and reducing inflammation in vitro and could show promise for COVID-19 risk groups.

A urolitíase associada a hidronefrose é uma das enfermidades mais comuns em cães e tem uma incidência crescente, existindo a necessidade de trabalhos que apresentem o uso da ultrassonografia para o diagnóstico da mesma. A imagem ultrassonográfica formada pelo urólito é hiperecogênica com formação de sombra acústica apresenta maior ecogenicidade e sombra acústica, e a hidronefrose mostra-se através da dilatação pélvica renal por conteúdo normalmente anecogênico. Objetivou-se relatar a importância do diagnóstico ultrassonográfico na presença de um urólito de 1,98 centímetros de comprimento no ureter cranial esquerdo em um cão de pequeno porte, gerando obstrução do fluxo e hidronefrose.

The most common way of magma transfer towards the surface is through dyking. Dykes can generate stresses at their tips and the surrounding host rock, initiating surficial deformation, seismic activity, and graben formation. Although scientists can study active deformation and seismicity via volcano monitoring, the conditions under which dykes induce grabens during their emplacement in the shallow crust are still enigmatic. Here, we explore through FEM numerical modelling the conditions that could have been associated with dyke-induced graben formation during the 1928 fissure eruption on Mt. Etna (Italy). We use stratigraphic data of the shallow host rock successions along the western and eastern sections of the fissure that became the basis for several suites of numerical models and sensitivity tests. The layers had dissimilar mechanical properties, which allowed us to investigate the studied processes more realistically. We investigated the boundary conditions using a dyke overpressure range of 1–10 MPa and a local extensional stress field of 0.5–2 MPa. We studied the effect of field-related geometrical parameters by employing a layer thickness range of 0.1–55 m and a variable layer sequence at the existing stratigraphy. We also tested how more compliant pyroclastics, such as scoria, (if present) could have affected the accumulation of stresses around the dyke. Also, we explored how inclined sheets and vertical dykes can generate grabens at the surface. We propose that the mechanical heterogeneity of the flank succession and the local extensional stress field can largely control both the dyke path and dyke-induced graben formation regardless of the tested dyke overpressure values. Similarly, soft materials in the stratigraphy can greatly suppress the shear stresses in the vicinity of a propagating dyke, encouraging narrow grabens at the surface if only the fracturing condition is satisfied, while inclined sheets tend to form semigrabens, respectively. Finally, we provide some insights related to the structural evolution of the 1928 lateral dyking event. All the latter can be theoretically applied in similar case studies worldwide.

The assurance of a future clinical trial is a key quantitative tool for decision-making in drug development. It is derived from prior knowledge (Bayesian approach) about the clinical endpoint of interest, typically from previous clinical trials. In this paper, we examine assurance in the specific context of vaccine development, where early development (Phase 2) is often based on immunological endpoints (e.g., antibody levels), while the confirmatory trial (Phase 3) is based on the clinical endpoint (very large sample sizes and long follow-up). Our proposal is to use the Phase 2 vaccine efficacy predicted by the immunological endpoint (using a model estimated from epidemiological studies) as prior information for the calculation of the assurance.

Background Increasing demand for high-value fish species and pressure on forage fish is challenging aquaculture to ensure sustainable growth by replacing protein sources in aquafeeds with plant and terrestrial animal proteins, without compromising the economic value and quality of the final fish product. In the present study, the effects of a plant protein-based diet (CV), two plant-based diets in which graded amounts of plan protein mixtures were replaced with Hermetia illucens meal alone (VH10) or in combination with poultry by-product meal (PBM) (VH10P30), a fishmeal (FM) diet (CF) and an FM diet supplemented with H. illucens (FH10) on growth performance, gut health and homeostasis of farmed subadult European seabass were tested and compared. Results Fish fed the VH10 and VH10P30 diets showed the highest specific growth rates and lowest feed conversion ratios among the tested groups. Expectedly, the best preservation of PI morphology was observed in fish fed the CF or FH10 diets, while fish fed the CV diet exhibited significant degenerative changes in the proximal and distal intestines. However, PBM supplementation mitigated these effects and significantly improved all gut morphometric parameters in the VH10P30 group. Partial substitution of the plant mixture with insect meal alone or PBM also induced most BBM genes and activated BBM enzymes, suggesting a beneficial effect on intestinal digestive/absorption functions. Regarding intestinal microbiota, fish fed diets containing H. illucens meal (FH10, VH10, VH10P30) had the highest richness of bacterial communities and abundance of beneficial genera such as Lactobacillus and Bacillus. On the other hand, fish fed CV had the highest microbial diversity but lost a significant component of fish intestinal microbiota, the phylum Bacteroidetes. Finally, skin pigmentation most similar to that of farmed or even wild seabass was also observed in the fish groups fed CF, FH10 or VH10P30. Conclusion Plant-based diets supplemented with PBM and H. illucens pupae meal have great potential as alternative diets for European seabass, without affecting growth performance, gut homeostasis, or overall fitness. This also highlights the importance of animal proteins in diets of European seabass, as the addition of a small amount of these alternative animal protein sources significantly improved all measured parameters.

Hospital at Home (HaH) has been proposed as a solution to relieve pressure on hospital beds during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, caregivers' feelings of inadequacy and concerns on the need for tighter clinical monitoring might lead to unnecessary and potentially harmful hospital admissions in frail older patients with mild or atypical COVID-19. Here we report the case of a 91-year old woman with severe dementia and atypical COVID-19 that could be successfully managed by our HaH thanks to her highly motivated caregivers and the support of a telemedicine solution (TMS) to provide caregiver training and support as well as supplementary telemonitoring. Despite some well-known issues on TMS use, the hybrid in-person and tele-visit approach of TMS-assisted HaH could help to create a “secure” environment, empowering caregivers to manage frail older adults with COVID-19 at home, avoiding unnecessary admissions to closed wards and their negative physical, functional and psychological outcomes. Ferroptosis is a non-accidental, regulated form of cell death operated by lipid peroxidation under strict control of GPx4 activity. This is consistent with the notion that lipid peroxidation is initiated by radicals produced from decomposition of traces of pre-existing lipid hydroperoxides. The question, therefore, emerges about the formation of these traces of lipid hydroperoxides interacting with Fe2+. In the most realistic option, they are produced by oxygen activated species generated during aerobic metabolism. Screening for metabolic sources of superoxide supporting ferroptosis induced by GSH depletion, we failed to detect, in our cell model, a role of respiratory chain. We observed instead that the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex -as other α keto acid dehydrogenases already known as a major source of superoxide in mitochondria- supports ferroptosis. The opposite effect on ferroptosis by silencing either the E1 or the E3 subunit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex pointed out the autoxidation of dihydrolipoamide as the source of superoxide. We finally observed that GSH depletion activates superoxide production, seemingly through the inhibition of the specific kinase that inhibits pyruvate dehydrogenase. In summary, this set of data is compatible with a scenario where the more electrophilic status produced by GSH depletion not only activates ferroptosis by preventing GPx4 activity, but also favors the formation of lipid hydroperoxides. In an attractive perspective of tissue homeostasis, it is the activation of energetic metabolism associated to a decreased nucleophilic tone that, besides supporting energy demanding proliferation, also sensitizes cells to a regulated form of death.

International audience; Innovations in virtual reality (VR) technology have led to exciting possibilities in teaching earth sciences, allowing students to experience complex geological sites that, due to cost and logistical reasons, they would not normally be able to experience. The need for high quality online digital learning resources and blended learning was brought to the forefront during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, as courses with a traditional physical field work component were forced to move online and provide alternatives to students. While it is unlikely that virtual field trips (VFT) would be accepted by students as a replacement of real-world fieldwork moving out of the pandemic, research shows promise that using IVR experiences can lead to enhanced learning outcomes in geosciences, warranting its inclusion on the curricula. This paper presents the outputs of a project to improve student learning in complex geological environments using VR. Here we outline a workflow that was developed to collect high resolution imagery using remote sensing to create digital outcrop models (DOM) of complex geological sites. Using this framework, this paper will then explore the use of VR for an investigation of the Husavik Triple Junction, a complex structural site in northern Iceland, explaining how the drone data was converted to a 3D DOM and demonstrating how VR can be used to simulate real world field mapping. Finally, we describe how these IVR activities have been integrated into taught modules at postgraduate level and discuss how the use of IVR experiences can complement existing geoscience curriculum design.

In the Far East, Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, is the one who "listens to the cries of the world". Depicted by gigantic white statues, she is the feminine personification of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and represents an archetypal figure dear to Chinese women and men. In Hong Kong and in Taipei, Taiwan, she is consulted by throwing two moon blocks or ritual sticks according to the rules of Chinese divination. The goddess is a real presence who acts in a real way: when questioned, she answers, defying a synchronistic and extraverted field of knowledge and meaning. The author highlights the importance of approaching in a cross-cultural, sensitive way, such a slippery cultural phenomenon as the use of divination in that part of China, investigating a possible parallelism between this form of dialogue with the goddess Guan Yin and the Jungian method of active imagination. Developing a cross-cultural sensibility towards Chinese divinatory practices as Chinese clients do in their country, without either prejudicially declaring them superstition or considering them as a form of magic, can have transformative effects both on Eastern and Western imagery. In the case of Chinese people, this sensibility develops the ability to examine, psychologically, a phenomenon whose deeper meaning often remains unconscious. In the case of Westerners, this sensibility creates an experience of active imagination in extraverted form. In both cases, when approached from a Jungian perspective, the Chinese divinatory practice leads to experiencing the transformative reality of the extraverted and synchronistic imaginal action.

Objective To assess the most frequent clinical features of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C) at presentation to the Emergency Department (ED) in a large multicenter cohort of patients, in order to define useful tools for a timely diagnosis.MethodsClinical and laboratory characteristics were retrospectively reviewed for 210 MIS-C patients from 18 Italian pediatric EDs. We assessed correlations between clinical and laboratory parameters and compared features of patients of different age (≤5 years and >5 years). ResultsFever was the main presenting symptom (100%), followed by conjunctivitis (46%), abdominal pain (44%), vomit (41%) and diarrhea (39%). Forty-nine percent of children presented to the ED in critical or nearly critical conditions. A higher prevalence of mucocutaneous involvement was found in younger children (69% versus 47%, p5 years (62% versus 85%, ppConclusionsApart from fever, most common MIS-C manifestations at presentation to the ED are conjunctivitis, abdominal pain, vomit and diarrhea. Younger children more frequently present with mucocutaneous involvement, while gastrointestinal manifestations are more common in older patients. These findings should be considered when MIS-C is suspected in the ED, in order to achieve a timely recognition of the condition.

Dyke propagation is the most common way of magma transfer towards the surface. Their emplacement generates stresses at their tips and the surrounded host rock initiating surficial deformation, seismic activity, and graben formation. Although active deformation and seismicity are studied in monitored volcanoes, the difference between dyke-induced and tectonic-controlled grabens is still less understood.Here, we explore the difference between dyke-induced vs tectonic-controlled graben formation in stratovolcanoes with heterogeneous crustal properties like Mt. Etna (Italy) and Santorini (Greece). The field observations are related to Mt. Etna's 1928 AD fissure eruption, which partly generated dyke-induced grabens along its expression, and to the Santorini volcano, where tectonic-controlled grabens become pathways for later dyke injections. Field campaigns have revealed the stratigraphic sequence of the shallow host rock successions that became the basis of several suites of numerical models. The latter investigated the boundary conditions (overpressure or external stress field) and the geometrical and mechanical parameters that i) could produce temporary stress barriers and hence stall the propagation of a dyke towards the surface, and ii) shall form a graben at the surface. The detailed analysis, results and interpretations propose that soft materials in the stratigraphy, such as pyroclastic rocks, suppress the stresses at the vicinity of a propagating dyke and do not promote the generation of a graben above a propagating dyke. Also, the study explores the conditions where inclined ascending dykes produce semi-grabens and the generation of wide or narrow graben structures. Finally, the results give valuable insights on the field-related parameters that can encourage dyke deflection in pre-existing grabens in the shallow crust. All the latter can be theoretically applied in similar case studies worldwide.

The present research is aimed at evaluating the wide surficial deformation associated with the destructive 1928 fissure eruption on Mt. Etna, Italy: with its high effusion rates and the low elevation of the main eruptive vents, this eruption caused the destruction of the Mascali town. The main aim of our work is to reconstruct the geometry, kinematics and origin of the system of faults and fissures formed during the 1928 event. Our study has been performed through a multidisciplinary approach consisting of field observations, aerial photo interpretation and Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling through COMSOL Multiphysics® (v5.6). Field data consist of 438 quantitative measurements: azimuth values, opening direction and aperture of dry/eruptive fissures, as well as attitude and offsets of faults. Our detailed structural analysis allowed us to detect four different tectonic settings related to dike propagation scenarios, which, from west to east, are: 1) a sequence of 8 eruptive vents surrounded by a 385-m wide graben, 2) a 2.5-km long single eruptive fissure, 3) a half-graben up to 74-m-wide and a symmetric 39-m-wide graben without evidence of eruption, 4) alignment of lower vents along the pre-existing Ripe della Naca faults. As a next step, several numerical models have been developed to investigate the relationship between diking and surficial deformation. We performed sensitivity analyses, by modifying crucial parameters, such as a range of dike overpressure values (1-20 MPa), host rock properties (Young modulus ranging from 1 to 30 GPa), stratigraphic sequence, and layer thickness. Furthermore, the distribution of tensile and shear stresses above the dike tip has been evaluated. Results revealed the presence of temporary stress barriers, which consist of soft (e.g. tuff) layers, that control the surficial deformation above a dike propagating to the surface by suppressing the distribution of shear stresses.

The reconstruction of present-day stress and palaeostress trajectories is of paramount importance to study the tectonic regime and its evolution, in a specific area. Its comprehension is crucial also for seismic and volcanic hazard assessment, especially focusing on the shallow crust.In the framework of the NEANIAS project (https://www.neanias.eu/), EU H2020 RIA, it has been developed the so called ATMO-Stress service (https://docs.neanias.eu/projects/a2-1-service/en/latest/), an open-source cloud service, currently hosted on the GARR Kubernetes platform, which allows to calculate stress trajectories in plain view, based on the concepts from Lee and Angelier (1994). It is designed to run on modern computers for both academics and non-academics purposes, spanning from research activity to oil and gas industries, natural hazard prevention and management.The service is freely accessible at https://atmo-stress.neanias.eu/ and is designed to calculate the stress trajectories for a specific area, considering as input the same type of stress (e.g. σHmax or σHmin). Data input can be from different sources (e.g. field data, focal mechanism solutions, in-situ geotechnical measures). They must be listed in a homogeneous ASCII text file or Excel file format, including the geographic coordinates, azimuth of the stress and the angular error. The service is capable of processing data from local to regional scale. Following the principles from Lee and Angelier (1994), the trajectory calculation can be done using different parameters and settings. The outputs can be seen directly on the website and can be downloaded with file formats ready to be imported and analyzed in GIS environment and Google Earth.

Deep defects have a fundamental role in determining the electro-optical characteristics and in the efficiency of InGaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, modeling their effect on the electrical characteristics of the LED is not straightforward., In this paper we analyze the impact of the defects on the electrical characteristics of LEDs: we analyze three single-quantum-well (SQW) InGaN/GaN LED wafers, which differ in the density of defects. Through steady-state photocapacitance (SSPC) and light-capacitance-voltage measurements, the energy levels of these deep defects and their concentrations have been estimated., By means of a simulation campaign, we show that these defects have a fundamental impact on the current voltage characteristic of LEDs, especially in the sub turn-on region. The model adopted takes into consideration trap assisted tunneling as the main mechanism responsible for current leakage in forward bias., For the first time, we use in simulations the defect parameters (concentration, energy) extracted from SSPC. In this way, we can reproduce with great accuracy the current-voltage characteristics of InGaN LEDs in a wide current range (from pA to mA)., In addition, based on SSPC measurements, we demonstrate that the defect density in the active region scales with the QW thickness. This supports the hypothesis that defects are incorporated in In-containing layers, consistently with recent publications.
