1. Measurement of $ν_μ$ Charged-Current Inclusive $π^0$ Production in the NOvA Near Detector

Abstract

Cross sections for the interaction $ν_μA\rightarrowμ^-π^0 X$ with neutrino energies between 1 and 5~GeV are measured using a sample of 165k selected events collected in the NOvA experiment's Near Detector, a hydrocarbon-based detector exposed to the NuMI neutrino beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Results are presented as a flux-averaged total cross section and as differential cross sections in the momenta and angles of the outgoing muon and $π^0$, the total four-momentum transfer, and the invariant mass of the hadronic system. Comparisons are made with predictions from a reference version of the GENIE neutrino interaction generator. The measured total cross section of ($3.57\pm0.44)\times10^{-39}\ \mathrm{cm}^2$ is $7.5\%$ higher than the GENIE prediction but is consistent within experimental errors.

Abstract

We report a search for a magnetic monopole component of the cosmic-ray flux in a 95-day exposure of the NOvA experiment's Far Detector, a 14 kt segmented liquid scintillator detector designed primarily to observe GeV-scale electron neutrinos. No events consistent with monopoles were observed, setting an upper limit on the flux of $2\times 10^{-14} \mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}sr^{-1}}$ at 90% C.L. for monopole speed $6\times 10^{-4} < β< 5\times 10^{-3}$ and mass greater than $5\times 10^{8}$ GeV. Because of NOvA's small overburden of 3 meters-water equivalent, this constraint covers a previously unexplored low-mass region., 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The NOvA long-baseline neutrino experiment uses a pair of large, segmented, liquid-scintillator calorimeters to study neutrino oscillations, using GeV-scale neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. These detectors are also sensitive to the flux of neutrinos which are emitted during a core-collapse supernova through inverse beta decay interactions on carbon at energies of $\mathcal{O}(10~\text{MeV})$. This signature provides a means to study the dominant mode of energy release for a core-collapse supernova occurring in our galaxy. We describe the data-driven software trigger system developed and employed by the NOvA experiment to identify and record neutrino data from nearby galactic supernovae. This technique has been used by NOvA to self-trigger on potential core-collapse supernovae in our galaxy, with an estimated sensitivity reaching out to 10~kpc distance while achieving a detection efficiency of 23\% to 49\% for supernovae from progenitor stars with masses of 9.6\~M$_\odot$ to 27\~M$_\odot$, respectively., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

Results are reported from an improved measurement of $��_��\rightarrow ��_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target 33 $��_e$ candidates were observed with a background of $8.2\pm0.8$ (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA $��_��$ disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on $\sin^22��_{13}$, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with $��_{23}$ in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than $93\%$ C.L. for all values of $��_{CP}$., 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal mixing ($��_{23} = ��/4$). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find $��m^2 = (2.67 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 ��_{23}$ at the two statistically degenerate values $0.404^{+0.030}_{-0.022}$ and $0.624^{+0.022}_{-0.030}$, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6 $��$ significance., 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This is an updated version of the NOvA proposal. The detector is a 30 kiloton tracking calorimeter, 15.7 m by 15.7 m by 132 m long, with alternating horizontal and vertical rectangular cells of liquid scintillator contained in PVC extrusion modules. Light from each 15.7 m long cell of liquid scintillator filled PVC is collected by a wavelength shifting fiber and routed to an avalanche photodiode pixel. The reach of NOvA for sin^2(2_theta_13) and related topics is increased relative to earlier versions of the proposal with the assumption of increased protons available from the Fermilab Main Injector following the end of Tevatron Collider operations in 2009., Comment: 112 pages

The NOvA experiment, using the existing NuMI beamline, is planned for construction at Ash River, Minnesota. The experiment will provide a measurement of, or strong limit on the neutrino mixing angle {theta}{sub 13}, and for sufficiently strong mixing, establish the hierarchy of the neutrino masses.
