Purpose Over 60% of armed conflicts re-occur; the seed of future conflict is sown even as a peace agreement is signed. The cyclical nature of war calls for a focus on youth who can disrupt this pattern over time. Addressing this concern, the developmental peace-building model calls for a dynamic, multi-level and longitudinal approach. Using an innovative statistical approach, this study aims to investigate the associations among four youth peace-building dimensions and quality peace. Design/methodology/approach Multi-level time-series network analysis of a data set containing 193 countries and spanning the years between 2011 and 2020 was performed. This statistical approach allows for complex modelling that can reveal new patterns of how different youth peace-building dimensions (i.e. education, engagement, information, inclusion), identified through rapid evidence assessment, promote quality peace over time. Such a methodology not only assesses between-country differences but also within-country change. Findings While the within-country contemporaneous network shows positive links for education, the temporal network shows significant lagged effects for all four dimensions on quality peace. The between-country network indicates significant direct effects of education and information, on average, and indirect effects of inclusion and engagement, on quality peace. Originality/value This approach demonstrates a novel application of multi-level time-series network analysis to explore the dynamic development of quality peace, capturing both stability and change. The analysis illustrates how youth peace-building dimensions impact quality peace in the macro-system globally. This investigation of quality peace thus illustrates that the science of peace does not necessitate violent conflict.

Evidence suggests an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, particularly among emerging adults. However, theories on altruism born of suffering or adversarial growth suggest that we might also see prosocial behavior as a function of the pandemic, which may protect against mental health challenges. Because cultural values are central in determining prosocial behavior, the current study explored how cultural values were differentially associated with adaptive prosocial behaviors that might protect against mental health challenges. Participants for the current study included 5,682 young people aged 18–25 years from 14 different countries around the world (68% female, 62% college students). Path analyses suggested that there were few differences in patterns as a function of culture, but revealed that horizontal individualism and horizontal and vertical collectivism were indirectly associated with lower levels of depression via prosocial behavior toward family members. Discussion focuses on the importance of coping by strengthening family relationships via prosocial behavior during the pandemic.

Religiosity in early childhood is an important, but underexamined, area of research, particularly in terms of parental influence. This study examines potential ‘transmission enhancers’ in the association between parental and children’s religiosity in early childhood, ages 3 to 6. Overall, we hypothesize that parental religiosity will be positively associated with children’s religiosity. We examine religiosity through three dimensions: religious social identity, prayer, and God concept. We further test four potential moderators which can enhance the association between parental and child religiosity, i.e., transmission. We consider one child variable (i.e., child age) and three familial variables (i.e., internalized parental religious motivation, credibility-enhancing displays, and active parental-child involvement). We expect that child age, internalized parental religious motivation, active parental-child involvement, and credibility-enhancing displays will strengthen the association between parental and children’s religiosity. However, for parents with lower religiosity, we hypothesize that none of these variables will moderate the link to child religiosity. Implications of transmission enhancers in the context of family religiosity will be discussed.

The role of autonomy-support as a predictor for psychological well-being has been the focus of an array of research. Autonomous motivation for religious behaviours and prosocial behaviours has been studied and related to increased well-being in adolescents and adults. For the first time, this study examines the role of religious autonomy-support provided by parents of 3-to-6-year-olds for their autonomous costly and no-cost prosocial resource distribution and instrumental helping towards a stranger, an ingroup and outgroup child. Parents of 200 catholic children will answer a questionnaire about the religious autonomy-support they provide and their children’s general prosocial behaviour. Their children will participate in one-to-one tasks assessing their outgroup attitudes and prosocial behaviours in a within-subjects design. Grounded on the Developmental Peacebuilding Model and the Self-Determination Theory, this study proposes that children’s outgroup attitudes will mediate the relationship between religious autonomy-support and outgroup autonomous prosocial resource distribution. Implications for religious autonomy-support and the development of outgroup attitudes are discussed.
