INTRODUCTION: In the 330-patient ADVOCATE trial of avacopan for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, in which 81% of patients had renal involvement, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) increased on average 7.3 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the avacopan group and 4.1 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the prednisone group (P = 0.029) at week 52. This new analysis examines the results in the patient subgroup with severe renal insufficiency at enrollment into the trial, i.e., eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). METHODS: eGFR was determined at baseline and over the course of the trial. Changes in eGFR were compared between the 2 treatment groups. RESULTS: In ADVOCATE, 27 of 166 patients (16%) in the avacopan group and 23 of 164 patients (14%) in the prednisone group had a baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). At week 52, eGFR increased on average 16.1 and 7.7 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the avacopan and prednisone groups, respectively (P = 0.003). The last eGFR value measured during the 52-week treatment period was ≥2-fold higher than baseline in 41% of patients in the avacopan group compared to 13% in the prednisone group (P = 0.030). More patients in the avacopan group versus prednisone group had increases in eGFR above 20, 30, and 45 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), respectively. Serious adverse events occurred in 13 of 27 patients (48%) in the avacopan group and 16 of 23 patients (70%) in the prednisone group. CONCLUSION: Among patients with baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the ADVOCATE trial, eGFR improved more in the avacopan group than in the prednisone group.

Immune-oncology (IO) drug therapy is effective against various types of cancer. Although several, potential, clinical, predictive markers have been identified, none so far have proven reliable. Herein we evaluated changes in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), which is upregulated by the accumulation of activated CD8 + T cells in the liver, as a potentially reliable predictive marker. We retrospectively analyzed 265 patients with advanced malignancies at three institutions between 2016 and 2019. The patients received IO drug therapy. We defined the ALT ratio (ALR) as the serum ALT value at baseline / the highest serum ALT during IO drug therapy, then determined whether the ALR correlated with the objective response rate or progression-free survival. We analyzed the evolution of 3GHz luminosity function of radio selected galaxies through cosmic time, up to about 1 Gyr after Big Bang, with making use of the VLA-COSMOS3GHz large project. We estimated the luminosity function for SFGs and AGNs in the VLA-COSMOS field respectively with two independent methods, the non-parametric C-method for accuracy to avoid the effect of cosmic variance and parametric MCMC method assuming pure luminosity evolution. We obtained pure luminosity evolution parameter as L*=(1+z)(3.36-0.31)z for SFG and L* = (1+z)(2.91-0.99)z for AGN. The resultant model agreed well with observed number counts down to sub-muJy level. Additionally, we compared the model with cosmic star formation rate density history with multiple observations in various wavelength and confirmed that our result is consistent with literature up to z=3. We further analyzed the statistical effect of gravitational lensing due to the dark matter halos and found that the effect is maximized at S_3GHz = 100muJy with about 1% contribution for SFG and less than 0.5% for AGN for the flux range considered in this study. In order to evaluate the effect of lensing magnification on parameter estimation in the SKA observations, we performed Fisher analysis and find that while the bias is limited, there is a distinguishable effect on SFG LF evolution parameter with SKA I MID wide survey, and all-sky and wide survey for AGN LF evolution parameters., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The first generation of stars were born a few hundred million years after the big bang. These stars synthesized elements heavier than H and He, that are later expelled into the interstellar medium, initiating the rise of metals. Within this enriched medium, the first dust grains formed. This event is cosmological crucial for molecule formation as dust plays a major role by cooling low-metallicity star-forming clouds which can fragment to create lower mass stars. Collecting information on these first dust grains is difficult because of the negative alliance of large distances and low dust masses. We combine the observational information from galaxies at redshifts 5 < z < 10 to constrain their dust emission and theoretically understand the first evolutionary phases of the dust cycle. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are fitted with CIGALE and the physical parameters and their evolution are modelled. From this SED fitting, we build a dust emission template for this population of galaxies in the epoch of reionization. Our new models explain why some early galaxies are observed and others are not. We follow in time the formation of the first grains by supernovae later destroyed by other supernova blasts and expelled in the circumgalactic and intergalactic media. We have found evidence for the first dust grains formed in the universe. But, above all, this letter underlines the need to collect more data and to develop new facilities to further constrain the dust cycle in galaxies in the epoch of reionization., Paper accepted for publication in section 4. Background Namilumab (AMG203), an immunoglobulin G1 monoclonal antibody that binds with high affinity to granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), was evaluated in a phase II randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the efficacy and safety in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with an inadequate response to methotrexate (MTX-IR) or anti-tumour necrosis factor therapy (TNF-IR). Methods Subcutaneous namilumab (20, 80, or 150 mg) or placebo was administered at baseline and weeks 2, 6, and 10 in patients on stable background methotrexate therapy who were with MTX-IR or TNF-IR. Primary endpoint was mean change from baseline in the 28-joint Disease Activity Score, C-reactive protein version (DAS28-CRP) at week 12 comparing each of the three doses of namilumab to placebo. Safety and tolerability were assessed by adverse events (AEs) and pulmonary parameters. Results were analysed using the per-protocol population. Results One hundred eight patients from Europe and Japan (48.4 ± 12.02 years old; 77.8% female; mean DAS28-CRP 5.60–5.79; rheumatoid factor/anti-citrullinated protein antibodies + 75%) were randomized to placebo or namilumab 20, 80, or 150 mg (n = 27, 28, 25, and 28, respectively). Adaptation to the ever-changing world is critical for survival, and our brains are particularly tuned to remember events that differ from previous experiences. Novel experiences induce dopamine release in the hippocampus, a process which promotes memory persistence. While axons from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) were generally thought to be the exclusive source of hippocampal dopamine, recent studies have demonstrated that noradrenergic neurons in the locus coeruleus (LC) corelease noradrenaline and dopamine in the hippocampus and that their dopamine release boosts memory retention as well. In this opinion article, we propose that the projections originating from the VTA and the LC belong to two distinct systems that enhance memory of novel events. Novel experiences that share some commonality with past ones (‘common novelty’) activate the VTA and promote semantic memory formation via systems memory consolidation. By contrast, experiences that bear only a minimal relationship to past experiences (‘distinct novelty’) activate the LC to trigger strong initial memory consolidation in the hippocampus, resulting in vivid and long-lasting episodic memories., Highlights Novelty induces dopamine release in the hippocampus, triggering memory consolidation to boost memory persistence. Two dopaminergic systems (the ventral tegmental area- and locus coeruleus-hippocampus systems) can stabilise memory through novelty-induced dopamine release in the hippocampus. Novel experiences can be viewed as a spectrum, from experiences that, while clearly novel, share some commonality with past experiences (‘common novelty’), to more fundamentally distinct experiences that bear minimal relationships to past experiences (‘distinct novelty’). We propose that events characterised by ‘common novelty’ boost memory retention via activation of the ventral tegmental area-hippocampus system, resulting in initial consolidation followed by systems consolidation to create neocortical, semantic, long-term memories. We further propose that events characterised by ‘distinct novelty’ lead to the boost of detailed hippocampal, episodic, long-term memory via activation of the locus coeruleus-hippocampus system through strong upregulation of the synaptic tagging and capture mechanism.

Recently, various controlled rocking systems have been proposed in seismic design to prevent damage concentration and to achieve self-centering against a wide range of input ground motion intensities. However, several obstacles must be overcome before these systems can be applied to actual buildings; for example, the requirement for large, self-centering post-tensioned strands and special treatment at uplift column bases must be addressed. This paper proposes a non-uplifting spine frame system with energy-dissipating members without post-tensioned strands, its self-centering function is achieved by envelope elastic-moment frames. The system is applied to an actual building constructed in Japan. Conventional shear damper and uplifting rocking systems with post-tensioned strands developed in prior studies are also applied to the same building structures, and the performances of the three systems, including damage distribution, energy dissipation, self-centering, robustness against severe earthquakes, and irregular stiffness, are compared and discussed through numerical simulations based on practical design criteria.

Baricitinib (BARI) is an oral selective inhibitor of Janus kinase (JAK)1 and JAK2 approved in the EU for the treatment of active RA. Patients (pts) with RA have increased cardiovascular risk, including for arterial and venous occlusive events. This abstract examines the effects of BARI on cardiovascular events in RA.

Various galaxy classification schemes have been developed so far to constrain the main physical processes regulating evolution of different galaxy types. In the era of a deluge of astrophysical information and recent progress in machine learning, a new approach to galaxy classification becomes imperative. We employ a Fisher Expectation-Maximization unsupervised algorithm working in a parameter space of 12 rest-frame magnitudes and spectroscopic redshift. The model (DBk) and the number of classes (12) were established based on the joint analysis of standard statistical criteria and confirmed by the analysis of the galaxy distribution with respect to a number of classes and their properties. This new approach allows us to classify galaxies based just on their redshifts and UV-NIR spectral energy distributions. The FEM unsupervised algorithm has automatically distinguished 12 classes: 11 classes of VIPERS galaxies and an additional class of broad-line AGNs. After a first broad division into blue, green and red categories we obtained a further sub-division into three red, three green, and five blue galaxy classes. The FEM classes follow the galaxy sequence from the earliest to the latest types that is reflected in their colours (which are constructed from rest-frame magnitudes used in classification procedure) but also their morphological, physical, and spectroscopic properties (not included in the classification scheme). We demonstrate that the members of each class share similar physical and spectral properties. In particular, we are able to find three different classes of red passive galaxy populations. Thus, we demonstrate the potential of an unsupervised approach to galaxy classification and we retrieve the complexity of galaxy populations at z~0.7, a task that usual simpler colour-based approaches cannot fulfil., published in A&A, 27 pages, 10 figures, 4 appendixes. Techniques to classify galaxies solely based on photometry will be necessary for future large cosmology missions, such as Euclid or LSST. However, the precision of classification is always lower in photometric surveys and can be systematically biased with respect to classifications based upon spectroscopic data. We verified how precisely the detailed classification scheme introduced by Siudek et al. (2018, hereafter: S1) for galaxies at z~0.7 could be reproduced if only photometric data are available. We applied the Fisher Expectation-Maximization (FEM) unsupervised clustering algorithm to 54,293 VIPERS galaxies working in a parameter space of reliable photometric redshifts and 12 corresponding rest-frame magnitudes. The FEM algorithm distinguishes four main groups: (1) red, (2) green, (3) blue, and (4) outliers. Each group is further divided into 3, 3, 4, and 2 subclasses, respectively. The accuracy of reproducing galaxy classes using spectroscopic data is high: 92%, 84%, 96% for red, green, and blue classes, respectively, except for dusty star-forming galaxies. We grew 20-100 nm thick films of B20 FeGe by molecular beam epitaxy and investigated the surface structures via scanning tunneling microscopy. We observed the atomic resolution of each of the four possible chemical layers in FeGe(-1-1-1). An average hexagonal surface unit cell is observed via scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and reflection high energy electron diffraction resulting in a size of ~6.84 {\AA} in agreement with the bulk expectation. Furthermore, the atomic resolution and registry across triple-layer step edges definitively determine the grain orientation as (111) or (-1-1-1). Further verification of the grain orientation is made by Ar+ sputtering FeGe(-1-1-1) surface allowing direct imaging of the subsurface layer., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

We present the first measurement of the angular two-point correlation function for AKARI 90-$\mu$m point sources, detected outside of the Milky Way plane and other regions characterized by high Galactic extinction, and categorized as extragalactic sources according to our far-infrared-color based criterion (Pollo et al. 2010). This is the first measurement of the large-scale angular clustering of galaxies selected in the far-infrared after IRAS measurements. Although a full description of clustering properties of these galaxies will be obtained by more detailed studies, using either spatial correlation function, or better information about properties and at least photometric redshifts of these galaxies, the angular correlation function remains the first diagnostics to establish the clustering properties of the catalog and observed galaxy population. We find a non-zero clustering signal in both hemispheres extending up to $\sim 40$ degrees, without any significant fluctuations at larger scales. The observed correlation function is well fitted by a power law function. The notable differences between a northern and southern hemisphere are found, which can be probably attributed to the photometry problems and point out to a necessity of performing a better calibration in the data from southern hemisphere., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Earth, Planets, and Space

Se presenta la evaluación del comportamiento de la resistencia a la compresión paralela a la fibra de probetas de Guadua angustifolia en relación a factores como zona, sección del culmo o tallo y presencia de nudo, realizada mediante un análisis de varianza multifactorial. Las muestras objeto de estudio procedentes de cuatro zonas ubicadas en el municipio de Pitalito y una en el municipio de Timaná al sur del departamento del Huila, fueron ensayadas en el Instituto de Extensión e Investigación (IEI) de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia sede Bogotá. La metodología para el corte de los culmos, obtención de las probetas y ensayos de resistencia a la compresión, se basó en las normas NTC5300, NTC5525, NSR10 e ISO/TC 165N315, y en los protocolos para corte de culmos y probetas, y determinación de la resistencia a la compresión paralela a la fibra de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia sede Bogotá. La resistencia a la compresión paralela a la fibra promedio de 130 probetas fue de 38,0 Mpa. El análisis de varianza multifactorial del diseño experimental, permitió identificar la significancia estadística del factor sección sobre la resistencia a la compresión con un valor-p inferior a 0,05 y un nivel de confianza del 95%, los valores más altos se encontraron para la parte superior. Los factores zona y presencia de nudo, al igual que las interacciones de segundo orden no fueron significativos.

We study low energy excitations in the quantum breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$ by combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and thermodynamical properties measurements. The INS spectra are quantitatively explained by spin-1/2 single-tetrahedron model having $XXZ$ anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This model has a two-fold degeneracy of the lowest-energy state per tetrahedron and well reproduces the magnetization curve at 0.5 K and heat capacity above 1.5 K. At lower temperatures, however, we observe a broad maximum in the heat capacity around 63 mK, demonstrating that a unique quantum ground state is selected due to extra perturbations with energy scale smaller than the instrumental resolution of INS., Comment: 5 pages 3 figures, Phys. The aim of this work is to characterize physical properties of Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) and Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) detected in the far-infrared (FIR) 90um band in the AKARI Deep Field-South (ADF-S) survey. In particular, we want to estimate the AGN contribution to the [U]LIRGs' infrared emission and which types of AGNs are related to their activity. We examined 69 galaxies at z>0.05 detected at 90um by the AKARI satellite in the ADF-S, with optical counterparts and spectral coverage from the ultraviolet to the FIR. We used two independent spectral energy distribution fitting codes: one fitting the SED from FIR to FUV (CIGALE) and gray-body + power spectrum fit for the infrared part of the spectra (CMCIRSED) in order to identify a subsample of [U]LIRGs, and to estimate their properties. Based on the CIGALE SED fitting, we have found that [U]LIRGs selected at the 90um AKARI band compose ~56% of our sample (we found 17 ULIRGs and 22 LIRGs, spanning over the redshift range 0.06, 24 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Aim: To measure the level of agreement and application of 10 international recommendations for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to a target of remission/low disease activity. Methods: A 10-point Likert scale (1=fully disagree, 10=fully agree) measured the level of agreement with each of 10 recommendations. A 4-point Likert scale (never, not very often, very often, always) assessed the degree to which each recommendation was being applied in current daily practice. If respondents answered ‘never’ or ‘not very often’, they were asked whether they would change their practice according to the particular recommendation. Results: A total of 1901 physicians representing 34 countries participated. Both agreement with and application of recommendations was high. With regard to application of recommendations in daily practice, the majority of responses were ‘always’ and ‘very often’. A significant percentage of participants who were currently not applying these recommendations in clinical practice were willing to change their practice according to the recommendations. Conclusion: The results of this survey demonstrated great support of ‘Treating RA to Target’ recommendations among the international rheumatology community. Additional efforts may be needed to encourage application of the recommendations among certain clinicians who are resistant to changing their practice.

We present a method of selection of 24~$��$m galaxies from the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep Field down to $150 \mbox{ }��$Jy and measurements of their two-point correlation function. We aim to associate various 24 $��$m selected galaxy populations with present day galaxies and to investigate the impact of their environment on the direction of their subsequent evolution. We discuss using of Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm applied to infrared photometric data to perform star-galaxy separation, in which we achieve an accuracy higher than 80\%. The photometric redshift information, obtained through the CIGALE code, is used to explore the redshift dependence of the correlation function parameter ($r_{0}$) as well as the linear bias evolution. This parameter relates galaxy distribution to the one of the underlying dark matter. We connect the investigated sources to their potential local descendants through a simplified model of the clustering evolution without interactions. We observe two different populations of star-forming galaxies, at $z_{med}\sim 0.25$, $z_{med}\sim 0.9$. Measurements of total infrared luminosities ($L_{TIR}$) show that the sample at $z_{med}\sim 0.25$ is composed mostly of local star-forming galaxies, while the sample at $z_{med}\sim0.9$ is composed of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with $L_{TIR}\sim 10^{11.62}L_{\odot}$. We find that dark halo mass is not necessarily correlated with the $L_{TIR}$: for subsamples with $L_{TIR}= 10^{11.15} L_{\odot}$ at $z_{med}\sim 0.7$ we observe a higher clustering length ($r_{0}=6.21\pm0.78$ $[h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}]$) than for a subsample with mean $L_{TIR}=10^{11.84} L_{\odot}$ at $z_{med}\sim1.1$ ($r_{0}=5.86\pm0.69$ $h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}$). We find that galaxies at $z_{med}\sim 0.9$ can be ancestors of present day $L_{*}$ early type galaxies, which exhibit a very high $r_{0}\sim 8$~$h^{-1} \mbox{Mpc}$., 13 pages, 8 figures

A randomized phase II clinical trial has been designed and started in the Japanese Foundation for Multidisciplinary Treatment of Cancer (JFMC) to select the better regimen between tailored CPT-11 + S-1 and the standard S-1 treatment for advanced or recurrent gastric cancer as the first line chemotherapy. Selection of the better treatment for general clinical practice in this clinical trial will lead to a more precise assignment of a promising regimen for a future phase III randomized trial, placing continuous 5-FU infusion as the reference arm. In this trial, subsidiary pharmacokinetic analysis for the tailored dose arm is also proposed. In order to continue chemotherapy for a long time and to obtain longer survival, our study design for the tailored therapy could be exploited, especially in the field of general clinical practice.

Many studies on postoperative carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and/or carbohydrate antigen (CA)19-9 monitoring after operation for gastric cancer have been reported, but most have been retrospective.A nationwide observational study was implemented in 135 leading institutions in Japan to evaluate the significance of CEA and/or CA19-9 in postoperative monitoring for recurrence in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Three hundred and twenty-one patients examined in this analysis underwent radical gastrectomy at one of Japan's leading institutions between November 1993 and March 1996 and had been followed up for at least 5 years. Serum levels of CEA and CA19-9 were examined preoperatively and every 3 months postoperatively, with diagnostic imagings, such as chest X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and ultrasonography also being performed every 3 months.Recurrence was observed in 120 patients (peritoneum, 48; liver 16; lymph node, 16; multiple sites, 25; and others, 12). Sensitivities of CEA and either CEA or CA19-9, or both, for recurrence were 65.8% and 85.0%, respectively, both of which values were significantly higher than the preoperative positivities (28.3% and 45.0%, respectively). In most patients with high preoperative levels CEA and/or CA19-9, these tumor markers increased again at recurrence. Recurrent diseases were detected between 5 months after detection by diagnostic imagings and 12 months before detection by diagnostic imagings (mean of 3.1 +/- 3.6 months before detection by diagnostic imagings) and between 10 months after detection by diagnostic imagings and 13 months before detection by diagnostic imagings (mean of 2.2 +/- 3.9 months before detection by diagnostic imagings) by CEA and CA19-9 monitorings, respectively.These results suggest that CEA and/or CA19-9 monitoring after operation was useful to predict the recurrence of gastric cancer, especially in almost all the patients with high preoperative levels of these markers.

Background: Catheter intervention has become popular not only in adult patients but in younger patients with congenital heart disease. The early neonatal catheter interventional treatment has also been attempted in conjunction with the development of prenatal diagnosis of the congenital heart disease. Method: Recent articles concerning several severe structural cardiac diseases in newborns, such as critical aortic stenosis, complete transposition of the great arteries, premature constriction of the ductus arteriosus, and pulmonary stenosis or atresia with intact ventricular septum are introduced with consideration. Results: This study investigated our own experiences of early neonatal balloon valvuloplasty in a patient with critical aortic stenosis carried out imediately after the delivery following prenatal diagnosis. A case with prenatal diagnosis of premature constriction of ductus arteriosus which could prevent persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn by early delivery at 39 weeks and 1 day of gestation were reported. Conclusion: Several cardiac interventional treatments performed in the present time during the perinatal period and some prospects in the near future are described in the discussion.

PURPOSE: The logic behind the application of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists in combination with tamoxifen in premenopausal women is that LHRH agonists on the one hand suppress the tamoxifen-induced stimulation of the pituitary-ovarian function and, on the other hand, seem as effective as surgical castration. This meta-analysis combines all randomized evidence to compare the combined treatment with LHRH agonist alone with respect to overall survival, progression-free survival, and objective response in premenopausal women with advanced breast cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four clinical trials randomizing a total of 506 premenopausal women with advanced breast cancer to LHRH agonist alone or to the combined treatment of LHRH agonist plus tamoxifen were identified. Meta-analytic techniques were used to analyze individual patient data from these trials. RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 6.8 years, there was a significant survival benefit (stratified log-rank test, P = .02; hazards ratio [HR] = 0.78) and progression-free survival benefit (stratified log-rank test, P = .0003; HR = 0.70) in favor of the combined treatment. The overall response rate was significantly higher on combined endocrine treatment (stratified Mantel Haenszel test, P = .03; odds ratio = 0.67). CONCLUSION: The combination of LHRH agonist plus tamoxifen is superior to LHRH agonist alone in premenopausal women with advanced breast cancer. Therefore, if a premenopausal woman with advanced breast cancer is thought to be suitable for endocrine treatment, it is proposed that the combination of a LHRH agonist plus tamoxifen be considered as the new standard treatment.

The choroid affected by the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (VKH) has seldom been explored by indocyanine green choroidal angiography. Five patients with definite diagnosis of VKH underwent this investigation. The first case had the most marked leakage, very similar to that on fluorescein angiography. The right eye of case 2 showed fewer leakage points on ICG than on fluorescein angiography, compared with case 1. The left eye of case 2 did not show any leakage. Cases 3, 4 and 5 yielded segmental hyperfluorescence, distant from the posterior pole, which could not be identified by fluorescein angiography. This might indicate segmental choroiditis. There were two types of hypofluorescent lesions; all the cases except case 2 showed early hypofluorescence. Hypofluorescent areas corresponding to overlying retinal detachment were seen in the right eye of case 4. Multiple spots, late hypofluorescence, about 200 to 500 um in size appeared throughout the posterior pole in four eyes out of ten. In conclusion, indocyanine green choroidal angiography provides a wider variety of pictures than fluorescein angiography.

The number of neonates who undergo intracardiac repair for congenital heart disease has increased in recent years. In considering appropriate surgical options in such circumstances, normal values for various cardiovascular dimensions are needed. We measured 19 parameters for the heart and great arteries (four valves, pulmonary tree, aortic arch, ascending and descending aorta, ventricular septum, left ventricular internal and posterior wall dimensions) using cross-sectional echocardiography in 55 premature and full-term infants (ranging in gestational age from 23 to 41 weeks, in body weight from 543 to 3966 g). The increase in each dimension correlated closely with body weight (r=0.62 to 0.87) and was found to follow a linear regression. The diameter of the isthmus was found to be smaller, and the size of mitral valve annulus larger, than previously published values.

We report high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the acoustic phonons in the single-layer cuprate $Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x)La_{x}CuO_{6+��}$. These measurements reveal anomalous broadening of the longitudinal acoustic phonon near the (1/4,1/4,0) wavevector. The observed wavevector and its doping dependence indicate the coupling of the phonons to an underlying electronic density wave state. In addition, a comparison of the scattered intensities for x-ray energy-gain and x-ray energy-loss indicates that both time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken in the material. We present results of a 1.1 mm deep survey of the AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S) with AzTEC mounted on the Atacama Submillimetre Telescope Experiment (ASTE). We obtained a map of 0.25 sq. deg area with an rms noise level of 0.32-0.71 mJy. This is one of the deepest and widest maps thus far at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. We uncovered 198 sources with a significance of 3.5-15.6 sigma, providing the largest catalog of 1.1 mm sources in a contiguous region. Most of the sources are not detected in the far-infrared bands of the AKARI satellite, suggesting that they are mostly at z ~ 1.5 given the detection limits. We constructed differential and cumulative number counts in the ADF-S, the Subaru/XMM Newton Deep Field (SXDF), and the SSA 22 field surveyed by AzTEC/ASTE, which provide currently the tightest constraints on the faint end. The integration of the best-fit number counts in the ADF-S find that the contribution of 1.1 mm sources with fluxes >=1 mJy to the cosmic infrared background (CIB) at 1.1 mm is 12-16%, suggesting that the large fraction of the CIB originates from faint sources of which the number counts are not yet constrained. We estimate the cosmic star-formation rate density contributed by 1.1 mm sources with >=1 mJy using the best-fit number counts in the ADF-S and find that it is lower by about a factor of 5-10 compared to those derived from UV/optically-selected galaxies at z ~ 2-3. The fraction of stellar mass of the present-day universe produced by 1.1 mm sources with >=1 mJy at z >= 1 is ~20%, calculated by the time integration of the star-formation rate density. To investigate the nature and properties of far-infrared (FIR) sources from the AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S), we performed an extensive search for the counterparts of 1000 ADF-S objects brighter than 0.0301 Jy in the WIDE-S (90 $\mu$m) AKARI band in the public databases (NED and SIMBAD). We analyzed the properties of the resulting sample: statistic of the identified objects, number counts, redshift distribution and morphological types. We also made a crude analysis of the clustering properties of the sources and constructed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 47 selected objects with the best photometry. Among 1000 investigated ADF-S sources, 545 were identified at other wavelengths. From them, 518 are known galaxies, and 343 of them were not known previously as infra-red sources. We found redshifts of 48 extragalactic objects and morphological types of 77 galaxies. We conclude that the bright FIR point sources observed in the ADF-S are mostly nearby galaxies.Their properties are very similar to properties of the local population of optically bright galaxies, except an unusually high ratio of peculiar or interacting objects and a smaller percentage of elliptical galaxies. The percentage of lenticular galaxies is the same as in the optically bright population which suggests they may frequently contain a significant amount of cool dust. It is possible that source confusion plays a significant role in more than 34% of measurements. The SEDs display a variety of galaxy types, from very actively star forming to very quiescent. The minimum value function appearing in Tikhonov regularization technique is very useful in determining the regularization parameter, both theoretically and numerically. In this paper, we discuss the properties of the minimum value function. We also propose an efficient method to determine the regularization parameter. A new criterion for the determination of the regularization parameter is also discussed.

We use angle-resolved photoemission to unravel the quasiparticle decoherence process in the high-$T_c$ cuprates. The coherent band is highly renormalized, and the incoherent part manifests itself as a nearly vertical ``dive'' in the $E$-$k$ intensity plot that approaches the bare band bottom. We find that the coherence-incoherence crossover energies in the hole- and electron-doped cuprates are quite different, but scale to their corresponding bare bandwidth. This rules out antiferromagnetic fluctuations as the main source for decoherence. We also observe the coherent band bottom at the zone center, whose intensity is strongly suppressed by the decoherence process. Consequently, the coherent band dispersion for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates is obtained, and is qualitatively consistent with the framework of Gutzwiller projection., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-layered cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of shadow band. We found that the shadow band is exactly the c(2x2) replica of the main band irrespective of the carrier concentration and its intensity is invariable with respect to temperature, doping, and substitution constituents of block layers. This result rules out the possibility of antiferromagnetic correlation and supports the structural origin of shadow band. ARPES experiments on optimally doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 also clarified the existence of the c(2x2) shadow band, demonstrating that the shadow band is not a unique feature of Bi-based cuprates. Strain effects on critical current densities have been examined for conductors containing nearly stoichiometric Nb3Al filaments with fine grains. The Nb3Al phase in these multifilamentary conductors are prepared by phase transformation from supersaturated Nb(Al) bcc solid solution and show high-field critical current densities much larger than those for conventionally prepared Nb3Al conductors, where the Nb3Al phase is known to be off-stoichiometric. The degradation of critical current densities with −0.7% intrinsic strain is ca. 20% at 12 T, comparable with those for conventional Nb3Al conductors of high strain tolerance.

The electronic structure of single crystals Na$_{0.6}$CoO$_2$, which are closely related to the superconducting Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$.$y$H$_2$O ($T_c \sim 5K$), is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. While the measured Fermi surface is found to be consistent with the prediction of a local density band theory, the energy dispersion is highly renormalized, with an anisotropy along the two principle axes ($\Gamma$-$K$, $\Gamma$-$M$). Our ARPES result also indicates that an extended flat band is formed slightly above $E_F$ along $\Gamma$-$K$. In addition, an unusual band splitting is observed in the vicinity of the Fermi surface along the $\Gamma$-$M$ direction, which differs from the predicted bilayer splitting., Comment: 4 figures

We report the case of a severely symptomatic neonate with Ebstein's anomaly. A modified Starnes operation was performed, but insufficient drainage of venous blood returning through thebesian veins caused overdistention of the right ventricle and severe left ventricular dysfunction. Banding of the pulmonary trunk is an important surgical procedure for patients who have con genital cardiac malformations with unrestricted pulmonary flow. We propose a new concept for determining in such circumstances the most appropriate length of the band used to constrict the pulmonary trunk in preparation for a Fontan operation. We studied 14 patients undergoing banding of the pulmonary trunk and measured the following parameters: diameter of aorta, diameter of pulmonary trunk, length of pulmonary arterial band and maximum flow velocity across the banded segment. We calculated an index from our orig inal parameter based on the formula; length of band/(diameter of aorta diameter of pulmonary trunk). The diameter of aorta was 9.5 ± 1.4 mm, and that of the pulmonary trunk was 9.6 ± 2.3 mm. The length of the band was 16.5 ± 3.4 mm, giving a calculated index of 0.188 ± 0.038. The maximum flow velocity was 4.02 ± 0.46 m/s. No correlation was found between the length of the band and body weight, and also no correlation was found between the length of the band and maximum flow velocity. The calculated index had a negative correlation with the maximum velocity of flow across the band (y = -8.13x + 5.56, R = 0.74, p < 0.01). We believe that the proposed index is a useful guide in determining the length of a pulmonary band when preparing patients for a Fontan operation.

Photoemission spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 reveal that the high energy feature near (pi,0), the "hump", scales with the superconducting gap and persists above Tc in the pseudogap phase. As the doping decreases, the dispersion of the hump increasingly reflects the wavevector (pi,pi) characteristic of the undoped insulator, despite the presence of a large Fermi surface. This can be understood from the interaction of the electrons with a collective mode, supported by our observation that the doping dependence of the resonance observed by neutron scattering is the same as that inferred from our data., Comment: 4 pages (revtex), 5 figures (eps)

We show, by use of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, that underdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+��} appears to have a large Fermi surface centered at (��,��), even for samples with a T_c as low as 15 K. No clear evidence of a Fermi surface pocket around (��/2,��/2) has been found. These conclusions are based on a determination of the minimum gap locus in the pseudogap regime T_c < T < T^*, which is found to coincide with the locus of gapless excitations in momentum space (Fermi surface) determined above T^*.
