Oxidative stress has been identified as a process which is detrimental to brain health, and associated with age-related cognitive declines. Few studies to-date have examined the relationship between in vivo oxidative stress biomarkers and cognitive performance within healthy elderly populations. The current study investigated the relationship between reaction time and oxidative stress, as measured by blood plasma concentrations of F2-isoprostanes using a sample of 251 healthy, non-demented, elderly volunteers (Male; 111: Female 140) aged 60–75 years from the Australian Research Council Longevity Intervention (ARCLI) study cohort. A Jensen Box was used in conjunction with the Hick paradigm in order to differentiate simple from choice reaction time (two, four and eight-choice conditions) as well as movement (MT) and decision times (DT). MT, but not DT, was found to be significantly slower for participants in the high F2-isoprostane group compared to the low F2-isoprostane group, across all stimulus choices. F2-isoprostanes, age and Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) full scale intelligence quotient (IQ) were found to be significant predictors of average MT in the sample as a whole. These findings provide preliminary evidence to suggest that higher levels of oxidative stress may be associated with impaired psychomotor speed in the healthy elderly population.

Ketamine (2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(methylamino) cyclohexanone) is a phenylcyclidine derivative originally developed in the 1960’s as a medication to initiate and maintain optimum anaesthesia in veterinary and paediatric surgery [1]. Ketamine functions as an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, and in low or sub-aesthetic doses, has proven efficacy as an analgesic, sedative, and novel antidepressant [2]. The administration of ketamine reliably produces dose-related deficits in several functional cognitive domains, and the associated psychoactive properties of the substance have been described in some detail [3-5]. Despite this, the impact on translatable facets of neurobehavioural functioning associated with ketamine use, such as driving ability, is not well described, and thus assumptions regarding the implications of the use of this drug on measures of traffic safety are equivocal [6]. Epidemiological studies have noted an increase in both the clinical application and concurrent recreational use of ketamine, and thus effective assessments of both the direct and peripheral effects of this substance are of high clinical importance. This article presents results from a study of occupational stress in Australian university staff. The authors report data on psychological strain and job satisfaction from nearly 9,000 respondents at 17 universities. Academic staff were generally worse off than general staff, and staff in newer universities were worse off than those in older universities. At the aggregate level, selfreport measures of psychological well-being were highly correlated with objective measures of university well-being (investment income, student–staff ratios, and recent cuts in staffing levels and in government operating grants). The authors conclude that the financial difficulties imposed on Australian universities in recent years are having serious consequences for the psychological well-being of their staff, particularly academic staff (faculty).
