Niphargus spasenijae Karaman G.S., 2015 Published records: Karaman G.S. (2015). Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Thasos Island (TH). Type material: Holotype: female 7, S���7381= anchialine cave in Atspas near seashore, Skala Marion, Island Thasos, Aegean Sea, 3 exp., 24.08.2015 (leg. I. Karaman), mm Karaman G.S. (2015). Paratype: male 6.1 mm, data same as for holotype, Karaman G.S. (2015). Holotype and paratypes are deposited in KCPM. Remarks: This species was described in 2015 by Karaman G.S. and is the only known Niphargus from Thasos Island, in the northern Aegean Sea. Its ecology is yet unknown. Type material: Holotype: male 14.5 mm (voucher NC008), Springs of Louros River, Vouliasta, Ioannina, Hellas, 25.04.2004, (leg. C. Fi��er & R. Verovnik), in sampled excavations along the coast of the springlake, Ntakis et al. (2015). Paratypes: male 14.5 mm (voucher NC009); females of 14.3 mm (voucher NC010) and 13.6 mm (voucher NC011) respectively, data same as for holotype:, Ntakis et al. (2015). Holotype and paratype are deposited in DBUL. Remarks: A species that is related morphologically and phylogenetically to N. sanctinaumi from Lake Ohrid, N. Macedonia (Ntakis et al. 2015). It is known only from its type locality, together with another endemic species, N. lourensis (Fi��er et al. 2006). Remarks: Recently, Karaman G.S. (2017a) has redescribed this species, using the original material and additional specimens from the central and western part of Greece. According to the author, N. graecus and N. aitolosi have morphological similarities, sharing the same locality at the lower part of Acheloos system, including the lakes of Lysimachia and Trichonida. Molecular analysis of N. graecus from all known localities is therefore required to solve the taxonomis status of different populations. Niphargus zarosiensis Zettler M.L. & Zettler A., 2017 Published records: Zettler M.L. & Zettler A. (2017) Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Crete Island (KR). Type material: Holotype: male 8.5 mm (ZMB 30632), spring at the shore of Lake Zaros (Limni Votomos), Crete, Greece, under stones and gravel, 35.139971°N, 24.911726°E, (leg. M.L. Zettler & A. Zettler 2017). Paratypes: female 10mm, data same as for holotype: (leg. M.L. Zettler & A. Zettler A. 2017). The type material of the new species and other material of N. zarosiensis are deposited at the collection of ZMB. Remarks: Niphargus zarosiensis is another endemic species of genus Niphargus from Crete Island, thus constituting the island as a hot spot of endemism. There is no known phylogenetic analysis and its ecology is unknown. Etymology: The specific name zarosiensis has its origin from Lake Zaros were the species was found in a spring at the shore line.

Type material: Holotype: male 8.5 mm, Tzanis spilios Cave, Lefka Ori Massif, W part of Crete Island, September, 1988, 5 exp. (leg. B. Sket). Paratype: female 8.1 mm, data same as for the holotype. Holotype and paratype are deposited in KCPM. Remarks: The phylogenetic position of E. tzanisi has not been yet studied using molecular methods, and the validity of the genus has to be confirmed. Remarks: Niphargus pararhodi shares the same type locality with N. rhodi, another known Niphargus from Rhodos Island, in the southerneast part of the Aegean Sea. The description of the species is based on a single male. Niphargobatoides lefkodemonaki (Sket, 1990) Synonymy: Niphargobates lefkodemonaki Sket, 1990. Published records: Sket (1990); Karaman G.S. (2016a). Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Crete Island (KR). Remarks: Niphargobatoides lefkodemonaki was originally described by Sket (1990) as a member of Niphargobates. Karaman G.S. (2016) later moved the species to the newly erected genus Niphargobatoides. Up to date, it is known only from the type locality. The validity of the genus remains to be tested using molecular methods. As pointed out in a recent paper (Sket & Karaman G.S. 2018), the diagnostic traits of Niphargobates Sket, 1980, Niphargobatoides Karaman G.S., 2016 and another niphargid genus, Chaetoniphargus Karaman G.S. & Sket, 2019 evolved convergently. It is possible that all these genera are nested within the genus Niphargus and their validity is questionable (Sket & Karaman G.S. 2018). Niphargus impexus Karaman G.S., 2016 Published records: Karaman G.S. (2016a). Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Crete Island (KR). Description of some troglobiont cyclopids from cave waters of Venezia Giulia (northeastern Italy). Acanthocyclops gordani Petkovski, Acanthocyclops venustus stammen (Kiefer), Acanthocyclops troglophilus (Kiefer), Diacyclops charon (Kiefer) and Diacyclops tantalus (Kiefer), are recorded for the first time from Italy; Diacylops antrincola Kiefer is new to northeastern Italy; Metacyclops gasparoi n.sp. is new to science and belongs to minutus-group.

Even in a biodiversity hotspot such as the Mediterranean basin, aspects relating to the distribution of some groups of microcrustaceans still need clarification. In this paper, we critically analyse the available information on diaptomid copepods in Tunisian inland waters and, based on the largest sampling campaign to date carried out in the country, report new data on their distribution. In the frame of this study, 248 crustacean samples were collected from 190 sites, and 10 diaptomid species belonging to 7 genera and 2 subfamilies were found in the samples. Their distribution follows a climate gradient determined by precipitation, and ecological variables mainly affect diaptomid distribution in the study area, while pure spatial factors are of negligible importance. Diaptomid biodiversity is therefore strongly linked to the diversity of inland waters that characterise the country. This is especially true in the wetlands of the Medjerda alluvial plain, where six diaptomid species co-occurred sympatrically, with up to four or five species coexisting syntopically and synchronically in some sites. Unfortunately, the natural water bodies of this plain are currently strongly threatened by urban expansion and agricultural reclamation, and the risk of local extinction for the species they host is increasingly high.

The Mediterranean bioregion is widely recognised as a biodiversity hotspot and its inland waters are among the species richest ecosystems of the northern hemisphere. However, the extent of such biodiversity has not been totally unravelled, especially in the Mediterranean islands. Here we present a first account of the crustaceans inhabiting 21 permanent and temporary ponds in Crete, the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The ponds, sampled between 2009 and 2018, cover all the island surface even though their number cannot be considered exhaustive to represent the entire non-malacostracan fauna of the island. Nevertheless, 46 taxa were identified and most of them are new records for Crete. Moreover, molecular taxonomy allowed to solve the systematic position of Arctodiaptomus piliger Brehm, 1955 and to synonymize this organism, previously considered endemic of the island, with Arctodiaptomus alpinus (Imhof, 1885). As regard branchiopods, this paper contributes a step ahead to clarify the taxonomic position of the Mediterranean Chirocephalus and Ceriodaphnia species. Finally, a review of all the non-stygobitic species present on the island is reported, including 78 taxa (21 Branchiopoda, 28 Copepoda and 29 Ostracoda).
