Synthesis of α,β-unsaturated-γ-lactams continue to attract attention due to the importance of this structural motif in organic chemistry. Herein, we report the development of a visible-light-induced excited-state copper-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation reaction for the preparation of a wide range of γ-H, -OH, and -OR-substituted α,β-unsaturated-γ-lactams using acrylamides as the 4-atom unit and aroyl chlorides as the 1-atom unit. This modular synthetic protocol features mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and high functional group tolerance. The reaction is amenable to late-stage diversification of complex molecular architectures, including derivatives of marketed drugs. The products of the reaction can serve as versatile building blocks for further derivatization. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest an inner-sphere catalytic cycle involving photoexcitation of the Cu(BINAP) catalyst, single-electron transfer, and capture of radical intermediates by copper species, followed by reductive elimination or protonation to give the desired γ-functionalized α,β-unsaturated-γ-lactams.

Stereochemical control of photochemical reactions that occur via triplet energy transfer remains a challenge. Suppressing off-catalyst stereorandom reactivity is difficult for highly reactive open-shell intermediates. Strategies for suppressing racemate-producing, off-catalyst pathways have long focused on formation of ground state, substrate-catalyst chiral complexes that are primed for triplet energy transfer via a photocatalyst in contrast to their off-catalyst counterparts. Herein, we describe a strategy where both a chiral catalyst-associated vinylpyridine and a nonassociated, free vinylpyridine substrate can be sensitized by an Ir(III) photocatalyst, yet high levels of diastereo- and enantioselectivity in a [2 + 2] photocycloaddition are achieved through a preferred, highly organized transition state. This mechanistic paradigm is distinct from, yet complementary to current approaches for achieving high levels of stereocontrol in photochemical transformations.

Chirality is a fundamental feature in all domains of nature, ranging from particle physics over electromagnetism to chemistry and biology. Chiral objects lack a mirror plane and inversion symmetry and therefore cannot be spatially aligned with their mirrored counterpart, their enantiomer. Both natural molecules and artificial chiral nanostructures can be characterized by their light-matter interaction, which is reflected in circular dichroism (CD). Using DNA origami, we assemble model meta-molecules from multiple plasmonic nanoparticles, representing meta-atoms accurately positioned in space. This allows us to reconstruct piece by piece the impact of varying macromolecular geometries on their surrounding optical near fields. Next to the emergence of CD signatures in the instance that we architect a third dimension, we design and implement sign-flipping signals through addition or removal of single particles in the artificial molecules. Our data and theoretical modeling reveal the hitherto unrecognized phenomenon of chiral plasmonic-dielectric coupling, explaining the intricate electromagnetic interactions within hybrid DNA-based plasmonic nanostructures.

Sulfoximines are increasingly incorporated in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, with the two enantiomers of chiral sulfoximines often having profoundly different binding interactions with biomolecules. Chiral eight-membered carbocycles are important motifs in organic chemistry, natural product chemistry, chemical biology, and medicinal chemistry. The lack of synthetic methods toward their construction is a challenge preventing their rational design and stereoselective synthesis. The catalytic enantioselective [4 + 4] cycloaddition is one of the most straightforward and atom-economical methods to obtain chiral cyclooctadiene derivatives. We report the first organocatalytic asymmetric [4 + 4] cycloaddition of 9H-fluorene-1-carbaldehydes with electron-deficient dienes affording cyclooctadiene derivatives in good yields and with excellent control of peri-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivities. The reaction concept is based on the aminocatalytic formation of a polarized butadiene component incorporated into a cyclic extended π-system, with restricted conformational freedom, allowing for a stereocontrolled [4 + 4] cycloaddition. FMO analysis unveiled that the HOMO and LUMO of the two reacting partners resemble those of butadiene. The methodology allows for the construction of cyclooctadiene derivatives decorated with various functionalities. The cyclooctadienes were synthetically elaborated, allowing for structural diversity demonstrating their synthetic utility for the formation of, for example, chiral cyclobutene- or cyclooctane scaffolds. DFT computational studies shed light on the reaction mechanism identifying the preference for an initial but reversible [4 + 2] cycloaddition delivering an off-cycle catalyst resting state, from which catalyst elimination is not possible. The off-cycle catalyst-bound intermediate undergoes a retro-[4 + 2] cycloaddition, followed by a [4 + 4] cycloaddition generating a cycloadduct from which catalyst elimination is possible. The reaction pathway accounts for the observed peri-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivity of the organocatalytic [4 + 4] cycloaddition.

The amplification of weak molecular signals to visible output could provide a gateway to the macroscopic world. In this context, supramolecular interfaces were designed by depositing macrocyclic "host" molecules in a multilayer film that can be utilized to discriminate isomers by their fluid flow response upon "host-guest" molecular recognition.

We developed a copper-catalyzed enantio- and diastereoselective boron conjugate addition to α-alkyl α,β-unsaturated esters under base-free conditions. The approach showed excellent enantioselectivities (87-99% ee) and moderate to good conversions (51-99%), albeit with moderate diastereoselectivities (1 : 1-17 : 1 dr). The synthetic utility of this protocol was demonstrated.

An asymmetric catalytic approach for the construction of C3-multifunctionalization α-hydroxy-β-amino pyridines has been reported. The products can be accessed by the modulation of two chiral catalysts independently in high yield and with good enantioselectivity. The method features mild reaction conditions and an excellent functional group tolerance. Biological activity analysis shows that the resulting products have a selective antiosteosarcoma activity on 143B cells.

The stereochemistry of the lipophilic side chain of (+)-rakicidin F had not been determined until recently. Using our lithiation-borylation methodology ("assembly line synthesis") we were able to efficiently prepare the all-syn isomer as well as the C-21 epimer of the side chain, and comparison with the natural product suggested that the natural product had all-syn stereochemistry. Completion of the total synthesis using a macrolactamization of the northern amide enabled us to confirm Wang and Chen's stereochemical findings for the structure of (+)-rakicidin F.

Keteniminium ions, the nitrogen analogues of ketenes, exhibit high reactivity toward olefins and π-systems. Previous results from the Maulide group demonstrated an unexpected propensity for an alternative intramolecular Belluš-Claisen-type rearrangement rather than an expected intramolecular (2 + 2) cycloaddition. We have conducted a cooperative density functional theory/experimental investigation of this process, seeking insights into the competition between the observed Claisen-type reaction and the historically expected (2 + 2) cyclization. Our calculations revealed a surprisingly small difference in the free energy barrier between these two intramolecular reactions. Further theoretical and experimental investigations probe the electronics of the substrate, rationalize a competing deallylation side reaction, and demonstrate the proof-of-concept for an enantioselective (2 + 2) variant.

Controlling chiral recognition and chiral information transfer has major implications in areas ranging from drug design and asymmetric catalysis to supra- and macromolecular chemistry. Especially intriguing are phenomena associated with chiral self-recognition. The design of systems that show self-induced recognition of enantiomers, i.e., involving homochiral versus heterochiral dimers, is particularly challenging. Here, we report the chiral self-recognition of α-ureidophosphonates and its application as both a powerful analytical tool for enantiomeric ratio determination by NMR and as a convenient way to increase their enantiomeric purity by simple achiral column chromatography or fractional precipitation. A combination of NMR, X-ray, and DFT studies indicates that the formation of homo- and heterochiral dimers involving self-complementary intermolecular hydrogen bonds is responsible for their self-resolving properties. It is also shown that these often unnoticed chiral recognition phenomena can facilitate the stereochemical analysis during the development of new asymmetric transformations. As a proof of concept, the enantioselective organocatalytic hydrophosphonylation of alkylidene ureas toward self-resolving α-ureidophosphonates is presented, which also led us to the discovery of the largest family of self-resolving compounds reported to date.

Deoxygenative difunctionalization of carbonyls affords a straightforward and effective route to construct geminal dual functionalized motifs. However, the research in this field is very challenging due to the strong bond dissociation energies of the C-O double bond or the subsequently formed C-O bond. Herein, we report a highly efficient deoxygenative haloboration of aldehydes to generate secondary α-haloboronates. Meanwhile, the difficult-to-obtain tertiary α-haloboronates can be also readily prepared via the same strategy with ketones. Furthermore, enantioselective chloroboration of carbonyls was successfully achieved to give chiral secondary or tertiary α-chloroboronates, the important intermediates to access enantioenrich multisubstituted stereocenters. These versatile products can be surprisingly attained through this simple and mild process with remarkable substrate scope expansion and functional group tolerance. Additionally, these reactions can proceed well on large scales, giving more practical values in the application.

An approach for the copper-catalyzed synthesis of enantioenriched amides bearing an α-stereogenic center is disclosed. This method involves the addition of an allyl copper species to an isocyanate and allows access to α-substituted chiral amides in high yields and high-to-excellent enantioselectivities. The utility of α-vinyl β-boryl amides in synthesis is highlighted by the diversification of products to afford highly useful scaffolds. DFT calculations reveal that the catalyst preferentially coordinates to the oxygen of the isocyanate. Enantiocontrol arises from the steric repulsion between the boryl group and the stereodirecting phenyl of the chiral ligand.

Hypothesis: Mixtures of chiral and achiral building blocks of supramolecules exhibit interesting cooperative phenomena, indicat-ed by the nonlinear composition dependence of the chiral properties. However, the nonlinear composition depend-ence of the enantioselectivity of mixed micelles is not well understood. It was hypothesized that in-depth understand-ing can be achieved by carefully investigating the composition dependence of the properties. Experiments: In this work, the nonlinear composition dependence of the enantioselectivity was found for the mixed micelle of achi-ral and chiral N-acyl amino acids by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). Capillary electrophoresis, circu-lar dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, surface tension measurement, and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to investi-gate the mechanisms. Findings: Four mechanisms that could be causing the nonlinearity were investigated: (i) synergistic and antagonistic interac-tions of the surfactants; (ii) the chiral transfer from chiral to achiral surfactant; (iii) differences in the retention factor; and (iv) cooperative chiral recognition of the chiral and achiral surfactant. The investigation of the composition de-pendency of critical micelle concentration (CMC) and molar circular dichroism revealed that the effect of (i) and (ii) was negligibly small. The newly derived equations for (iii) and (iv) revealed that (iii) and (iv) have a major or medi-um effect on the nonlinear enantioselectivity.

However, very few can exert control over the newly formed stereocenter. We disclose a strategy to overcome this in the context of one of the most widely used radical carbon-carbon bond forming reactions, the Giese reaction. Incorporation of a removable basic heteroarene into the substrate enables a network of attractive noncovalent interactions between a phosphoric acid catalyst, the subsequently formed α-amino radical, and the Giese acceptor, allowing the catalyst to exert control during the C-C bond forming step. Deprotection of the products leads to analogues of γ-aminobutyric acid. We anticipate that this strategy will be applicable to other asymmetric radical transformations in which catalyst control is presently challenging.

A majority of enantiomeric separations show some degree of peak asymmetry, which is detrimental to quantitative and semiquantitative chiral analysis. This paper presents a simple and rapid peak symmetrization algorithm for the correction or reduction of peak tailing or fronting in exponentially modified Gaussians. Raw chromatographic data can be symmetrized by adding a correct fraction of the first derivative to the chromatogram. The area remains invariant since the area under the first derivative is zero for a pure Gaussian and numerically close to zero for asymmetric peaks. A method of easily extracting the distortion parameter is provided, as well as insight into how pre-smoothing the data with the "perfect smoother" algorithm can suppress high frequencies effectively. The central difference method is also used to compute the first derivative, reducing root-mean-square noise by up to 28% compared to the standard forward difference method. A survey of 40 chiral separations is presented, demonstrating the range of asymmetry observed in chiral separations. Examples of symmetrization of the peaks from enantiomers in comparable and disproportionate concentrations are also provided. Artifacts of deconvolution are discussed, along with methods to mitigate such artifacts.

Palladium-catalyzed carbonylation reactions are efficient methods for synthesizing valuable molecules. However, realizing a carbonylation with excellent yield and chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivities by classical low-valent palladium catalysis is highly challenging. Herein, we describe an enantioselective carbonylation reaction using a high-valent palladium catalysis strategy and employing a chiral sulfoxide phosphine (SOP) ligand. This double aminocarbonylation reaction begins with the formation of a carbamoylpalladium(II) species, which undergoes enantioselective oxidative addition with a cyclic diaryliodonium salt to generate a palladium(IV) intermediate, followed by a second CO insertion and reductive elimination. The mechanism has been illustrated with experimental and computational studies.

A cascade Michael addition/alkylation reaction between 3-chlorooxindoles and α-cyano chalcones catalyzed using a multifunctional quinine-derived aminoindanol-thiourea substance was investigated. A series of spirooxindoles incorporating a densely substituted cyclopropane motif were efficiently obtained with moderate to excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivity and further transformed to products with versatile structural diversity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the tentative intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the chiral catalyst were crucial for the stereocontrol.

The first copper-catalyzed enantioselective [4 + 1] annulation of yne-allylic esters with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds was realized through an elegant remote stereocontrol strategy. The very remote ε regioselective nucleophilic substitution was developed by employing a novel chiral copper-vinylvinylidene species from the new C4 synthon yne-allylic esters. Thus, greatly diverse spirocycles were obtained with ample scope and excellent levels of chemo-, regio-, and enantioselectivities. Moreover, detailed mechanistic studies suggest an yne-allylic substitution and Conia-ene cascade pathway on the remote stereochemical induction progress.

Enantioselective cyclopropanation of α-carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides (SY) has so far been limited to addition/ring closure reactions on electron-poor olefins. Herein, we report the iridium-catalyzed intramolecular cyclopropanation of SY in the presence of a chiral diene in up to 96% yield and 98% enantioselectivity. Moreover, density functional theory calculations suggest that the re face of the olefin preferably attacks an iridium carbene intermediate in an asynchronous concerted step that is independent of the geometry of the olefin.

The total synthesis of raistrickindole A has been achieved, thereby confirming the proposed structure as an N-hydroxylated DKP. In the first but less selective approach, the DKP was built up by cyclization of a diastereoisomerically mixed N-hydroxylated dipeptide. In the second approach, the same DKP was constructed stereoselectively by the intramolecular Mitsunobu reaction of a hydroxamic acid. The synthesis was completed by a stereoselective oxidative cyclization. While only one enantiomer of chiral biomolecules performs a biological function, access to both enantiomers (or enantiomorphs) proved to be advantageous for technology. Using dye covalent attachment to a DNA Holliday junction (HJ), we created two pairs of dimers of bis(chloroindolenine)squaraine dye that enabled strongly coupled molecular excitons of opposite chirality in solution. The exciton chirality inversion was achieved by interchanging single covalent linkers of unequal length tethering the dyes of each dimer to the HJ core. Dimers in each pair exhibited profound exciton-coupled circular dichroism (CD) couplets of opposite signs. Dimer geometries, modeled by simultaneous fitting absorption and CD spectra, were related in each pair as nonsuperimposable and nearly exact mirror images. The origin of observed exciton chirality inversion was explained in the view of isomerization of the stacked Holliday junction. This study will open new opportunities for creating excitonic DNA-based materials that rely on programmable system chirality.

The development of efficient and sustainable methods for the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles is an important goal for the chemical industry. In particular, substituted chiral piperidines are prominent targets due to their prevalence in medicinally relevant compounds and their precursors. A potential biocatalytic approach to the synthesis of this privileged scaffold would be the asymmetric dearomatization of readily assembled activated pyridines. However, nature is yet to yield a suitable biocatalyst specifically for this reaction. Here, by combining chemical synthesis and biocatalysis, we present a general chemo-enzymatic approach for the asymmetric dearomatization of activated pyridines for the preparation of substituted piperidines with precise stereochemistry. The key step involves a stereoselective one-pot amine oxidase/ene imine reductase cascade to convert N-substituted tetrahydropyridines to stereo-defined 3- and 3,4-substituted piperidines. This chemo-enzymatic approach has proved useful for key transformations in the syntheses of antipsychotic drugs Preclamol and OSU-6162, as well as for the preparation of two important intermediates in synthetic routes of the ovarian cancer monotherapeutic Niraparib.

Chemical synthesis of natural products is typically inspired by the structure and function of a target molecule. When both factors are of interest, such as in the case of taxane diterpenoids, a synthesis can both serve as a platform for synthetic strategy development and enable new biological exploration. Guided by this paradigm, we present here a unified enantiospecific approach to diverse taxane cores from the feedstock monoterpenoid (S)-carvone. Key to the success of our approach was the use of a skeletal remodeling strategy which began with the divergent reorganization and convergent coupling of two carvone-derived fragments, facilitated by Pd-catalyzed C-C bond cleavage tactics. This coupling was followed by additional restructuring using a Sm(II)-mediated rearrangement and a bioinspired, visible-light induced, transannular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition. Overall, this divergent monoterpenoid remodeling/convergent fragment coupling approach to complex diterpenoid synthesis provides access to structurally disparate taxane cores which have set the stage for the preparation of a wide range of taxanes.

Alpha-lipoic acid is a natural product that possesses distinct pharmacological properties. Lipoic acid is a short-chain fatty acid containing an asymmetric carbon at five bonds of distance to the organic function. Herein, we report a CuH-catalyzed asymmetric desymmetrization of prochiral cyclopentane-1,3-diones to access cyclic 3-hydroxy ketones having an all-carbon quaternary center with high diastereoselectivity via hydrosilylation using PMHS as an inexpensive hydride source. This reaction displays high functional group tolerance including reducible alkyne, alkene, and ester groups with a broad substrate scope. The importance of chiral cyclic 3-hydroxy ketone building blocks was also demonstrated through the synthesis of (-)-estrone, the toxicodenane E core, and fused indoles.

Fabricating microscale helical structures from small molecules remains challenging due to the disfavoured torsion energy of twisted architectures and elusory chirality control at different hierarchical levels of assemblies. Here we report a combined solution–interface-directed assembly strategy for the formation of hierarchically self-assembled helical microtoroids with micrometre-scale lengths. A drop-evaporation assembly protocol on a solid substrate from pre-assembled intermediate colloids of enantiomeric binaphthalene bisurea compounds leads to microtoroids with preferred helicity, which depends on the molecular chirality of the starting enantiomers. Collective variable-temperature spectroscopic analyses, electron microscopy characterizations and theoretical simulations reveal a mechanism that simultaneously induces aggregation and cyclization to impart a favourable handedness to the final microtoroidal structures. We then use monodispersed luminescent helical toroids as chiral light-harvesting antenna and show excellent Förster resonance energy transfer ability to a co-hosted chiral acceptor dye, leading to unique circularly polarized luminescence. Our results shed light on the potential of the combined solution–interface-directed self-assembly approach in directing hierarchical chirality control and may advance the prospect of chiral superstructures at a higher length scale.

Herein we report a bis-boric acid-mediated regioselective reductive aminolysis of 3,4-epoxy alcohols, providing new access to prepare amino diols in high diastereofidelity directly starting from nitroarenes. Notably, this step-economical process is enabled by the essential dual function of bis-boric acid, which is engaged initially in the 4,4'-bipyridine-catalyzed reduction of nitro compounds as the reductant and subsequently promotes the ring opening reaction of 3,4-epoxy alcohols with the in situ-generated anilines.

This study describes the enantioseparation of three chiral amines as naphthaldimine derivatives, using normal phase HPLC with amylose and cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) chiral stationary phases (CSPs). Three chiral amines were derivatized using three structurally similar naphthaldehyde derivatizing agents, and the enantioselectivity of the CSPs toward the derivatives was examined. The degree of enantioseparation and resolution was affected by the amylose or cellulose-derived CSPs and aromatic moieties as well as a kind of chiral amine. Especially, efficient enantiomer separation was observed for 2-hydroxynapthaldimine derivatives on cellulose-derived CSPs. Molecular docking studies of three naphthaldimine derivatives of leucinol on cellulose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) were performed to estimate the binding energies and conformations of the CSP-analyte complexes. The obtained binding energies were in good agreement with the experimentally determined enantioseparation and elution order.

Chiral pesticides account for 30% of pesticides. Pesticides are inevitably leached into the groundwater by runoff. At the watershed level, the distribution characteristics of enantiomers in sediments collected from the river network of an agricultural area near the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were tested, and their potential correlations with the physicochemical properties and microbial communities of the sediments were analyzed. The sediment pollution was serious at sites 8 and 9, with their pollution source possibly being agricultural or industrial sewage. Moreover, there were higher cumulative contents of pesticide residues at sites 4, 8, and 9. Specifically, Cycloxaprid was the most detected chiral pesticide in the study area, followed by Dinotefuran and Diclofop-methyl. Additionally, Ethiprole and Difenoconazole had strong enantioselectivity in the study area. Interestingly, the enantiomers of some chiral pesticides, such as Tebuconazole, had completely different distributions at different sites. Pearson correlation analysis showed that sediment catalase and microbial biomass carbon were important factors for enantioselectivity of chiral pesticides. The effect of sediment physicochemical properties on enantioselective distribution was achieved by influencing the microorganisms in the sediment. Furthermore, the enantioselective distribution of Tebuconazole was closely related to the genus Arenimonas. Overall, the enantioselective distribution of most of the chiral pesticides was positively correlated with the prokaryotic microbial community. This study provides empirical support for agricultural non-point source pollution caused by chiral pesticides, and also lays a research foundation for exploring the factors that affect the fate of chiral pesticides in the environment.

We report the first palladium hydride enabled hydroalkenylation of strained molecules. This new mild protocol proceeds via a regio- and chemoselective hydropalladation step, followed by a photoinduced radical alkyl Heck reaction. This methodology represents a new reactivity mode for strained molecules and opens new avenues for photoinduced palladium catalysis. The reaction is compatible with a wide range of functional groups and can be applied to complex structures, delivering a diverse array of highly valuable and modifiable alkenylated cyclobutanes and cyclopropanes. A hydroalkenylation/diastereoselective rearrangement cascade toward a cyclopentene scaffold has also been demonstrated.

The development of efficient and sustainable methods for decarboxylative transformations is of great importance due to the ease of availability and nontoxicity of carboxylic acids. Despite tremendous efforts in this area, it remains challenging to develop enantioselective transformations direct from carboxylic acids. Herein we disclose a photoelectrocatalytic method for the direct and enantioselective decarboxylative cyanation. The photoelectrochemical reactions convert carboxylic acids to enantioenriched nitriles by employing cerium/copper relay catalysis with a cerium salt for catalytic decarboxylation and a chiral copper complex for stereoselective C-CN formation.

The first enantioselective formal (3 + 2) cyclocondensation involving α,β-unsaturated pyrazoleamides as 3-carbon partners was accomplished in a stepwise fashion. The stepwise esterification/Michael addition sequence is promoted by Zn(OTf)

Hexahydrocurcumin (HHC) and octahydrocurcumin (OHC) were synthesized, and their enantiomers were separated using supercritical fluid chromatography. The absolute configurations (ACs) of HHC and OHC were independently determined using experimental measurements and quantum theoretical predictions of vibrational circular dichroism, electronic circular dichroism, and optical rotatory dispersion. These studies lead to AC assignments of (-)-(R)-HHC and (+)-(R,R)-OHC. The AC of OHC is further confirmed by its structure determined from single crystal x-ray diffraction.

Nanocolloids that are cumulatively referred to as nanocarbons, attracted significant attention during the last decade because of facile synthesis methods, water solubility, tunable photoluminescence, easy surface modification, and high biocompatibility. Among the latest development in this reserach area are chiral nanocarbons exemplified by chiral carbon dots (CDots). They are expected to have applications in sensing, catalysis, imaging, and nanomedicine. However, the current methods of CDots synthesis show often contradictory chemical/optical properties and structural information that required a systematic study with careful structural evaluation. Here, we investigate and optimize chiroptical activity and photoluminescence of L- and D-CDots obtained by hydrothermal carbonization of L- and D-cysteine, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrates that they are formed via gradual dehydrogenation and condensation reactions of the starting amino acid leading to particles with a wide spectrum of functional groups including aromatic cycles. We found that the chiroptical activity of CDots has an inverse correlation with the synthesis duration and temperature, whereas the photoluminescence intensity has a direct one, which is associated with degree of carbonization. Also, our studies show that the hydrothermal synthesis of cysteine in the presence of boric acid leads to the formation of CDots rather than boron nitride nanoparticles as was previously proposed in several reports. These results can be used to design chiral carbon-based nanoparticles with optimal chemical, chiroptical, and photoluminescent properties.

We describe our efforts toward the total synthesis of the natural product elisabethin A. The first route was guided by the proposed biosynthesis, assembling the 6,6-ring system before forming the five-membered ring including the quaternary carbon. The second approach includes a high yielding cyclization under Mitsunobu conditions as a key step. It allowed the preparation of an unusual and highly functionalized bicyclic 6,5-spiro compound. Both routes share a common advanced precursor obtained from an "underdeveloped" Claisen rearrangement of an aryl dienyl ether.

In this study, a complete exploration of the conformational space of different phase-transfer catalysts by means of computational method benchmarking is presented. For this particular research work, only the most significant and relevant conformational analysis approaches have been chosen to characterize the main Cinchona alkaloid-based phase-transfer catalysts. This particular guiding study aims to rigorously compare the performance of different conformational methods, determining the strengths of each method and providing recommendations regarding suitable and efficient choices of methods for analysis.
