Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) remains the only potentially curative treatment option for relapsed follicular lymphoma (FL), yet questions remain about the optimal timing. This study analyzed long-term outcomes and associated factors among recipients of allo-HCT with FL.Patients with relapsed FL who underwent allo-HCT from 2001 to 2011 with a human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched donor were included. Outcome analyses for overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), transplant-related mortality (TRM), and disease relapse/progression were calculated. A multivariate analysis was performed to determine factors associated with outcomes, and a prognostic score for treatment failure was developed in a subset analysis of patients.In all, 1567 patients with relapsed FL were included; the median follow-up was 55 months. The 5-year probabilities of OS and PFS were 61% and 52%, respectively. The 5-year cumulative incidences of disease progression/relapse and TRM were 29% and 19%, respectively. Chemoresistant disease, older age, heavy pretreatment, poor performance status (PS), and myeloablative protocols were predictors for worse survival. The prognostic score, using age, lines of prior therapy, disease status, and PS, stratified patients into 3 groups-low, intermediate, and high risk-with 5-year PFS rates of 68%, 53%, and 46%, respectively, and 5-year OS rates of 80%, 62%, and 50%, respectively.Allo-HCT should be considered for patients with relapsed FL and available HLA-matched donors. Outcomes are better in earlier phases of the disease, and reduced-intensity conditioning should be preferred. Imaging measurements of a bright wave event in the nighttime mesosphere were made on 14 November 1999 at two sites separated by over 500 km in the southwestern United States. The event was characterized by a sharp onset of a series of extensive wavefronts that propagated across the entire sky. The waves were easily visible to the naked eye, and the entire event was observed for at least 5 1 2 hours. The event was observed using three wide-angle imaging systems located at the Boston University field station at McDonald Observatory (MDO), Fort Davis, Texas, and the Starfire Optical Range (SOR), Albuquerque, New Mexico. The spaced imaging measurements provided a unique opportunity to estimate the physical extent and time history of the disturbance. Simultaneous radar neutral wind measurements in the 82 to 98 km altitude region were also made at the SOR which indicated that a strong vertical wind shear of 19.5 ms1km1 occurred between 80 and 95 km just prior to the appearance of the disturbance. Simultaneous lidar temperature and density measurements made at Fort Collins, Colorado, 1100 km north of MDO, show the presence of a large (50 K) temperature inversion layer at the time of the wave event. The observations indicated that the event was most probably due to an undular mesospheric bore, a relatively uncommon disturbance which has only recently been reported [Taylor et al., 1995a]. Evidence is also shown to suggest that a large east-west tropospheric frontal system lying over the northern United States was the origin of the disturbance.

Inactivity, as it appears during space flight and in bed rest, induces reduction of lean body and bone mass, glucose intolerance, and weakening of the cardiovascular system. Increased protein intake, whey protein in particular, has been proposed to counteract some of these effects, but has also been associated with negative effects on bone, likely caused by a correspondingly high ratio of acid to alkali precursors in the diet. The main hypothesis of the presented cross-over study (MEP study) was that supplementing high protein intake (1.2 g/kg body weight/d plus 0.6 g/kg body weight/d whey protein) with alkaline salts (90 mmol potassium bicarbonate/d) will maintain lean body mass during bed rest without increasing bone resorption. A 21-day head-down-tilt bed rest study was performed to examine several physiological systems in a multidisciplinary approach. Ten healthy men (age: 31±6 years; body weight: 76.5±5.6 kg) were randomly assigned to the dietary countermeasure or isocaloric control first, one test subject randomized to the dietary countermeasure first dropped out after the first campaign.

The presence of the two glyoxylate cycle marker enzymes, isocitrate lyase (ICL, EC 4.1.3.1) and malate synthase (MS, EC 4.1.3.2), was investigated in cotyledons during the post-germinative growth of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cv Chico III) seedlings. Both ICL and MS increased in the dark and declined after illumination. Cotyledons from seedlings grown in the dark for 7 days were employed for sucrose density gradient fractionation of cell organelles. It was shown that ICL and MS are localized in glyoxysomal fractions. The presence of the two key enzymes of the glyoxylate cycle in tomato cotyledons was confirmed by immunoblotting both in crude extracts and in glyoxysomal fractions. The occurrence of such enzymes was also investigated in different tissues of tomato plants (leaves, fruits, roots and flowers). Although it was difficult to detect ICL and MS activities by spectrophotometric assays, immunoblot analysis showed the presence of both enzymes in senescent leaves and, surprisingly, in young expanding leaves, but not in mature leaves. The role of glyoxylate cycle enzymes in leaves and the value of further studies with tomato are discussed.

Conceptual combinations range from the utterly mundane to the sublimely creative. Mundane combinations include a myriad of adjective-noun and noun-noun juxtapositions that crop up in everyday speaking and writing, such as blue car, cooked carrots, and radio phone. Creative combinations include some of the most important theoretical constructions in science, such as sound wave, bacterial infection, and natural selection. Both mundane and creative conceptual combinations are essential to our attempts to make sense of the world and people's utterances about it. This paper will show how the various aspects of conceptual combination discussed by Hampton (this volume), Shoben and Gagné (this volume) and Wisniewski (this volume) can be unified by seeing them as parts of a general coherence mechanism that people use to make sense of what they see and hear.
