BackgroundPreterm birth (PTB) is a global health epidemic, sub-Saharan Africa is severely impacted due to its limited healthcare resources. Pregnancy knowledge, cultural beliefs and practices play a role in the identification of risk and management of PTB. This study explored knowledge, understandings, cultural beliefs and attitudes to pregnancy and PTB, as well as cultural considerations for the introduction of an intravaginal device which could be used to identify PTB risk.MethodsQualitative research was conducted in South Africa and Kenya. In-depth interviews were conducted using semi-structured guides with women with a history of PTB (n = 10), healthcare providers (n = 16) and health systems experts (n = 10); and 26 focus group discussions with pregnant women seeking antenatal care (n = 132) and community male partners/fathers (n = 54). Interviews/discussions were transcribed, translated, and analysed thematically.ResultsPregnancy knowledge, especially for first time pregnancies was poor, with many reporting late entry to antenatal care. Knowledge about PTB was understood in terms of gestational age, weight or small size of baby, with concerns about long term health and stigma. Various risk factors for PTB were described, including those related to traditions and beliefs of witchcraft/curses. Cultural practices, such as the use of traditional medicines and pica, and religion and its impact on health seeking behaviour were also viewed as risk factors. Although insertion of intravaginal devices was not widely acceptable in traditional communities, especially during pregnancy, it was felt that the use of one to detect risk of PTB would be accepted if proven effective in reducing PTB risk.ConclusionsVarious culturally-informed beliefs exist which explain understandings of and attitudes toward pregnancy, pregnancy risk, and PTB. An inclusive exploratory process is critical to facilitate an understanding of the beliefs and traditions which could impact the introduction and design of a product to detect the risk of PTB.

The aim is to scope out current literature exploring communication in young people aged 18-30 with chronic pain. Looking at the barriers to effective communication in young adults with chronic pain or those with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia.f

As use of technology continues to expand into daily life, so too will the therapeutic use of technology within Occupational Therapy practice. Ethical decision making is a key tenet within Occupational Therapy practice; however, the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists does not have existing guidelines for the ethical provision of technology. As such, this rapid review aims to summarize existing frameworks and recommendations to provide recommendations specific to Occupational Therapists on the ethical decision making regarding the provision of technology.

This rapid scoping review will map the clinical guidelines, treatment protocols and good practice guidance for optimising outcomes and reducing inequalities for women who are drug dependent during the perinatal period across the UK.

We develop a novel test for a respondent's valuation of emotional information (VEI) and use this instrument to examine how those with varying levels of VEI approach resolving foreign policy crises.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exome sequencing (ES) for the diagnosis of fetal anomalies was implemented nationally in England in October 2020 by the NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS). The GMS is based around seven regional Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs). Prenatal ES has the potential to significantly improve NHS prenatal diagnostic services by increasing genetic diagnoses and informing prenatal decision-making. Prenatal ES has not previously been offered routinely in a national healthcare system and there are gaps in knowledge and guidance. METHODS: Our mixed-methods evaluation commenced in October 2020, aligning with the start date of the NHS prenatal ES service. Study design draws on a framework developed in previous studies of major system innovation. There are five interrelated workstreams. Workstream-1 will use interviews and surveys with professionals, non-participant observations and documentary analysis to produce indepth case studies across all GLHs. Data collection at multiple time points will track changes over time. In Workstream-2 qualitative interviews with parents offered prenatal ES will explore experiences and establish information and support needs. Workstream-3 will analyse data from all prenatal ES tests for nine-months to establish service outcomes (e.g. diagnostic yield, referral rates, referral sources). Comparisons between GLHs will identify factors (individual or service-related) associated with any variation in outcomes. Workstream-4 will identify and analyse practical ethical problems. Requirements for an effective ethics framework for an optimal and equitable service will be determined. Workstream-5 will assess costs and cost-effectiveness of prenatal ES versus standard tests and evaluate costs of implementing an optimal prenatal ES care pathway. Integration of findings will determine key features of an optimal care pathway from a service delivery, parent and professional perspective. DISCUSSION: The proposed formative and summative evaluation will inform the evolving prenatal ES service to ensure equity of access, high standards of care and benefits for parents across England.

A “code red for humanity;” the “number one threat to mankind;” as lethal as “guns and bombs.” Climate change represents an existential threat to humanity. The coming decades will see a surge of funding for climate adaptation aid in response to this threat – led by US President Joe Biden’s pledge of $11 billion in climate aid annually by 2024. This expansion of funding for climate development interventions, in particular, suggests a need to evaluate how past infrastructure interventions have impacted communities, and lessons for the future. This thesis thus explores the relationship between large-scale irrigation projects in sub-Saharan Africa and communal violence. Recognizing the wide-ranging variation in use and effectiveness of irrigation schemes, it asks: To what extent does violence influence the location and effectiveness of large-scale irrigation projects? Essentially, is there a violence effect – does violence prior to or during the construction of projects influence projects influence their utility, and, conversely, in what circumstances do these projects amplify or reduce the risks of communal violence? Using a mixed methods approach, the paper does not find a strong relationship between violence and the relative success of irrigation projects. However, it finds that irrigation projects are more likely to be placed in locations with greater exposure to violence. The reason for this increased exposure to violence appears two-fold: first, there is an intentional decision to use irrigation projects as a mechanism to promote regional stability and socioeconomic development. This relationship is also, in part, unintentional, reflecting multilateral funding bodies’ historically limited efforts to mitigate risk. A case study of Nigeria is used to delve further into these findings, identifying several instances in which projects have exacerbated community grievances against the state –– and where violence has ensued. These findings suggest that stakeholders in the climate change, development, and peacebuilding spheres should prioritize mechanisms for greater environmental and social risk assessments; increase opportunities for community-based development and governance; and strive to better integrate conflict-sensitivity into climate adaptation interventions.

Emma Smith’s capstone project consisted of building a media archive documenting human rights violations during the Bosnian War from 1992-1995, often considered the deadliest conflict in Europe since WWII. Her project centered around highlighting the critical role journalism played in alerting the global public of the crisis, with war reporters and photojournalists broadcasting live –– for the first time in history –– war crimes in Europe. She worked with the Srebrenica Memorial Center (MC) and the Post-Conflict Research Center (PCRC) to propose a project that would document, collect, digitize, recognize, and celebrate the work of international journalists who brought vast awareness to the suffering of Bosnian citizens from 1992 to 1995. For her final deliverable, Emma submitted a preliminary database of the digitized “archive,” annotated with comments and personal reflections on trends identified while collecting research materials. She hopes this project will inform historical narratives of the past and help engage citizens in discussions relating to transitional justice, memorialization, and genocide prevention in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region at large.

Simulations of ice sheet evolution over glacial cycles require integration of observational constraints using ensemble studies with fast ice sheet models. These include physical parameterisations with uncertainties, for example, relating to grounding-line migration. More complete ice dynamic models are slow and have thus far only be applied for 50 % under almost equal forcing. Grounding-line positions differ by up to 49 km, show significant hysteresis, and migrate non-steadily in both scenarios with long quiescent phases disrupted by leaps of rapid migration. The simulations quantify the evolution of two different ice sheet geometries (namely thick and slow vs. thin and fast), triggered by the variable grounding-line migration over the differing ocean beds. Our study extends the timescales of 3D full-Stokes by an order of magnitude compared to previous studies with the help of parallelisation. The extended time frame for full-Stokes models is a first step towards better understanding other processes such as erosion and sediment redistribution in the ice shelf cavity impacting the entire catchment geometry.

The direct contact of warm ocean water with the front and base of ice shelves is the main driver for accelerated mass loss of the Antarctic ice sheet. We present a compilation of observations from various projects and methodological approaches applied over the last decade along the Dronning Maud Land coast and highlight their importance for understanding the ice-ocean interactions. With a focus on the Ekström ice shelf, these include spatially continuous seismic observations in combination with airborne gravity inversion to yield sub-shelf bathymetry and geomorphological evidence of past ice-flow activity; ice-dynamic numerical modelling to investigate the role of seafloor/subglacial substrate characteristics to enhance or reduce ice-sheet extent and advance/retreat rates; sub-shelf CTD measurements to determine ocean properties driving basal melting; satellitebased remote sensing to determine ice-shelf height changes and spatially-distributed basal melting; and point measurements of basal melt with surface-based phase-sensitive radar to determine ocean-driven melt and validate remote-sensing products. As the Dronning Maud Land coast plays a critical role in preconditioning the water mass of the coastal current before it enters the Filcher ice-shelf cavity, we argue that a coordinated inter- and transdisciplinary observational network is required to facilitate monitoring a potential ice-sheet mass loss in this part of Antarctica.

Kongsvegen is a well-studied surge-type glacier in the Kongsfjord area of northwest Svalbard. Long-term monitoring has shown that the ice surface velocity has been increasing for the past 4 years; presenting a unique opportunity to study the internal ice structure, basal conditions and thermal regime that play a crucial role in initiating glacier surges. In April 2019, three-component seismic vibroseis surveys were conducted at two sites on the glacier, using a small Electrodynamic Vibrator source (ElViS). Site 1 is in the ablation area and site 2 near the equilibrium line, where the greatest increase in ice surface velocity has been observed. Initial analysis indicates the conditions at the two sites are significantly different. At site 1 the ice is around 220 m thick, sitting on a relatively flat and uniform bed, with no clear change in the bed reflection along the profile. There is a horizontally layered sediment package ∼60 m thick underlaying the bed. The ice column shows no internal layering. By contrast at site 2 (Fig. 1), where the ice is around 390 m thick, there is much more complex internal ice structure. Clear internal ice reflections are visible between 150-250 m depth – where we expect a transition from cold to temperate ice. Further reflections in the 100 m above the bed indicate there could be shearing or sediment entrainment in this area. Below the bed, cross-cutting layers are clearly visible and the bed reflection itself shows changing reflection polarity – suggesting water or very wet sediment is present in some areas. This suggests ice movement by basal sliding and shearing is likely.

An extensive grid of seismic reflection data collected on Ekstro ̈m Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, between 2010–2018, using an on-ice vibroseis source and snowstreamer, are used to make a detailed bathymetry map of the sea floorand ice-shelf cavity. The maps shows a deep sea-floor trough, likely a paleao-ice stream, under the western side ofthe ice shelf. The trough contains a number of points of higher topography, indicating probable former grounding line positions. At the shelf front a sill running across the width of the shelf has implications for ocean circulation and thus ice-ocean interaction and ice shelf melt. This new bathymetry is markedly different from previous models, which show a generally flat and shallow sea floor in the region. This is presumably the case for many of the smaller ice-shelves in Dronning Maud Land, which highlights the need for better bathymetry measurements in these key threshold regions.

Knowledge of sub-ice shelf sedimentary sequences, ice-ocean interactions, and biological activities is still relatively sparse, largely due to the challenges involved in accessing ice shelf cavities. The Sub-EIS-Obs project, funded by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Germany, is a multidisciplinary study, which aims to recover and characterize sediment sequences beneath the Ekström Ice Shelf (EIS) in East Antarctica. The project addresses several research objectives, such as the crustal evolution during the breakup of Gondwana, the build-up and variability of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) throughout the Cenozoic, reconstruction of grounding-line dynamics, sedimentary and erosional processes beneath the ice stream and shelf, and multidisciplinary observations of climate induced changes in ice-ocean interactions. A pre-site seismic survey campaign was carried out on the Ekström Ice Shelf in 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, resulting in 615 km of multi-fold seismic data. Based on these data, four different units were defined, which, according to preliminary interpretation, document geologic history of the breakup of Gondwana in the Jurassic (Explora-Wedge volcanic deposits) and ongoing marine and glacio-marine sedimentation during the Meso- and Cenozoic. On top of all strata a glacio-marine surface cover deposited during the Last Glacial Maximum and Holocene sedimentation is indicated in the seismic profiles. In order to sample all units separately, coring locations were selected accordingly. A hot water drilling system was used to drill holes through the shelf ice (ice thicknessesrange between∼210 and 330 m), enabling the deployment of a gravity corer, a Wippermann Grabber, a vibro-and a hammer coring system manufactured by Jilin University (Changchun, China), and a UWITEC percussioncorer (BAS corer). Moreover, a camera installed in a pressure housing enabled recording of high-resolution videofootage of the seafloor and associated benthic ecosystems as well as the base of the ice shelf. In addition, a Conductivity-Temperature-Depth probe was attached to all coring devices in order to record the oceanographic properties of the water column. Here, we present first results from the Sub-EIS-Obs sediment sampling campaigns 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. We present an overview of the long-term project aims, sampling strategy, perfor-mance of the hot water drilling operation, and recovered geological samples, and the video footages of the seafloor.

As part of the research project RESPONDER, we performed two combined radar-seismic surveys to identify the bed conditions and suitable drilling locations at Store Glacier, a marine-terminating glacier in West Greenland. The two sites at 30 (Low Site) and 60 km (High Site) upstream of the snout of the glacier are thought to be part of the same subglacial drainage system but have different conditions both at the surface and at the base. As the ice-bed contact in the seismic data was sometimes difficult to identify we used the radar (Ground Penetrating Radar) data for confirmation. At the Low Site in the ablation zone, the surface is icy and crevassed. The five 2 to 3 km long seismic profiles show a large subglacial trench (width 2 km, depth 350 m) orientated in flow direction. The basal conditions vary with patches water, whether or not present in saturated sediments or exclusively at the base, both at the along-flow and across-flow profiles but they appear mainly at the sloping sides of the trench. The NE side of the trench contains a 100 to 150 m thick stratified sequence of softer, less consolidated sediments. At the High Site at equilibrium line, the surface is snowy with two frozen supra-glacial lakes. The two seismic profiles show less topography but have a similar patchy character. Despite thicker ice the ice-bed contact is much clearer visible in the seismic data which we contribute to a better coupled snowstreamer. The 5 km along-flowprofile has a flat base consisting of sediments. A clear single englacial reflection following the shape of the base can be seen at 85% depth of the ice column, possibly the Holocene-Wisconsin transition. At the 1.7 km across-flow profile there is a 130 m rise of the bed from S to N. Judging by the strength of the basal reflection the sediments at the northern side are softer then at the southern side.

Covering the changes in Shakespeare editorial theory and practice over the decades between the publication of the Oxford Shakespeare (1986) and the New Oxford Shakespeare (2016), this article surveys a range of modern texts with different rationales and aimed at different readerships. The article has three sections: the imagery associated with editorial activity, issues of authorship and collaboration, and the place of performance in editions. We trace the conceptual changes between the Textual Companion that accompanied the 1986 edition, and the Authorship Companion that is the equivalent for the 2016 edition, discussing the role of quantitative and qualitative approaches to questions of authorship and collaboration. We pay particular attention to the metaphors and tropes that shape editorial discourse, finding their echoes in early modern paratextual material. Pervasive anthropomorphic textual imagery tends implicitly to feminize texts (and masculinize editors), and we discuss the changing demands on editors and the continued dominance of male editors, particularly for Shakespeare’s tragedies and histories. A final section discusses Arden editorial generations of Hamlet alongside the play’s own telos of interrupted succession and its preoccupation with ghosts and the past.

An extensive grid of seismic reflection data collected on Ekström Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, between 2010–2018, using an on-ice vibroseis source and snowstreamer, are used to reconstruct the glaciological and tectonic history of this region. The data clearly image the outcrop and sub-ice extent of the volcanic Explora Wedge (generated through Jurassic rifting and seafloor spreading). The wedge is overlain by a sequence of truncated, dipping marine-sediment layers. The sediment were likely truncated by former ice advance and subsequent retreat; which has also left evidence in the form topographic over-deepening and glacial debris deposits at the sea floor. The debris deposits range from elongated bedforms in a topographic trough (indicating probable former ice-stream flow) to layered sediment wedges at the current ice-shelf front (indicating the likely former extent of grounded ice). A series of sub-ice shelf geological drilling campaigns in the area will take place (2017-2019) to recover sediments from the sea floor. Combining the topography and material characteristics from vibroseis data with stratigraphic evidence from sediment cores allows a robust reconstruction in this area. Future integration of these results with numerical models will provide a better understanding of past and present interactions between the ice sheet and the solid Earth in Dronning Maud Land, which will in turn improve understanding of future contributions of this region to sea-level rise.

[Abstract] Background and methods: This paper reviews the current capacity of personnel in enabling access to assistive technology (AT) as well as the systems and processes within which they work, and was reviewed, discussed, and refined during and following the Global Research, Innovation, and Education in Assistive Technology (GREAT) Summit. Findings: Key concepts addressed include a person-centred team approach; sustainability indicators to monitor, measure, and respond to needs for service design and delivery; education, research, and training for competent practice, using the six rehab-workforce challenges framework; and credentialing frameworks. We propose development of a competence framework and associated education and training programs, and development and implementation of a certification framework for AT personnel. Conclusions: There is a resolve to address the challenges faced by People globally to access assistive technology. Context specific needs assessment is required to understand the AT Personnel landscape, to shape and strengthen credentialing frameworks through competencies and certification, acknowledging both general and specific skill mix requirements. Implications for Rehabilitation Personnel in assistive technology (AT) provision should be trained using a person-centred team approach, which emphasizes appropriate skill-mix to address multiple needs within the community. Sustainability indicators should be used which allow personnel to monitor, measure and respond to needs for service design and delivery. A competence framework with associated education and training program, coupled with the development and implementation of a certification framework for AT personnel needs, will promote quality in AT personnel training globally.

During field seasons 2016/17 and 2017/18, pre-site seismic surveys were undertaken in the Ekströmisen region of Dronning Maud Land, with the primary goal of building a stratigraphic age framework of sub-ice-shelf sedimentary strata. These sediments cover the Explora Wedge, a syn- or post-rift volcanic deposit. Expected ages range from Late Mesozoic to Quaternary. From new vibroseismic profiles, we selected sites for seafloor sampling with short cores through Hot Water Drill (HWD) holes of the oldest and of the youngest sedimentary sequencesto confine their age time span. There is further potential for drilling deeper sediment cores with the support of international partners. Deep drilling should recover the sediments overlying the Explora Escarpment, in order to discover the context and nature of the Explora Wedge. We expect the overlying sedimentary sequences to reveal the history of polar amplification and climate changes in this part of Antarctica, the build-up of the East AntarcticIce Sheet during past warmer climates and its Cenozoic and future variability. We successfully sampled the sea floor with different tools through HWD holes at two sites selected from the reflection seismic data close to the German Neumayer Station III, and discovered a pebbly sea floor coated with bryozoan skeletons. Present HWD holes penetrating the ice shelf to sample the sea floor will provide the unique opportunity for further piggy back experiments consisting of multi-disciplinary nature. For example, experiments and deploying measuring setup for oceanography, sea and ice shelf physics, geophysics, geology, hydrography, biogeochemistry could be potential future actions in order to characterise the ocean-ice-sediment interactions, processes and ecosystem observations. For season 2018/19 – besides additional geological sampling – it is planned to deploy a multiyear oceanographic mooring beneath the ice shelf. During future campaigns, we will try to launch an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) either through a HWD hole, from a ship, or from the fast ice with the necessary power to operate and measure within the sub-ice shelf cavity.

Between 2010-2018 an extensive grid of seismic reflection data were collected across the grounding line and on the Ekström ice-shelf, using an on-ice vibroseis source and snowstreamer. Here they are used to investigate current ice dynamics and reconstruct the glaciological history of this region. These data show the ice-shelf thickness ranges from 170 m, near the ice-shelf front, to ~600 m near the grounding line. Relic crevasses are seen at the ice base, in the Western part of the ice shelf, which can be tracked back to a current crevasse field at the grounding line. There is also evidence of an ice-shelf basal channel, with a corresponding surface depression. Beneath the sea floor the outcrop and sub-ice extent of the volcanic Explora Wedge (generated through Jurassic rifting and seafloor spreading) is clearly imaged. The wedge is overlain by a sequence of truncated, dipping marine-sediment layers. The sediment layers were likely truncated by former ice advance and subsequent retreat; which has also left evidence in the form topographic over-deepening and glacial debris deposits at the sea floor. The debris deposits range from elongated bedforms in a topographic trough (indicating probable former ice-stream flow) to layered sediment wedges at the current ice-shelf front (indicating the likely former extent of grounded ice). The vibroseis method is fast and effective allowing for a high volume of data collection. For example, in the 2016/17 season ~280 km of multi-fold seismic reflection data were collected over a 25-day period. Future integration of these results with numerical models will provide a better understanding of past and present interactions between the ice sheet and the solid Earth in Dronning Maud Land, which will in turn improve understanding of future contributions of this region to sea-level rise.

An extensive grid of seismic reflection data collected on Ekström Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, between 2010 – 2017 are used to constrain palaeo-ice flow and retreat in the region. Sets of elongated bedforms are seen in a topographic trough, indicating a probable former ice-stream under the western part of the ice shelf. A smoother bed and truncated marine sediments under the eastern part of the ice shelf suggest there was slower ice flow in this area. Sediment wedges at the current ice-shelf front show the grounded ice extent likely reached this region; further investigation of these features will allow the style of deglaciation to be better determined. It is common to map geomorphological sediment features in front of ice shelves and beneath modern-day ice streams using geophysical methods, but there are much less data documenting landforms beneath ice shelves. The data presented here were collected as part of pre-site survey for an envisaged sub-ice shelf geological drilling campaign. These data cover a large portion of the Ekström ice shelf and also extend into the grounded ice areas. Data were collected using an on-ice vibroseis source combined with a snowstreamer. This method of collection is fast and effective allowing for a high volume of data collection. For example, in the 2016/17 season ~280 km of multi-fold seismic reflection data were collected over a 25-day period. In contrast to AUVs with capabilities to measure bathymetry in full spatial coverage, seismic reflection data also allows the vertical structure of sea floor strata and properties to be investigated. The acoustic properties of the sub-surface allow information about the material characteristics, and potentially age and origin of the sediment features to be determined. Moreover, the thickness of the glacial debris, deposited on pre-existing marine sediments, is a first-order indication of where to retrieve short sediment cores. Future integration of these geophysical results with numerical models of ice and sediment dynamics will provide a better understanding of past and present interactions between ice and the solid Earth in East Antarctica; leading to an improved understanding of future contributions of this region to sea-level rise.

An extensive grid of seismic reflection data collected on Ekström Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, between 2010 – 2017 are used to constrain palaeo-ice flow and retreat in the region. Sets of elongated bedforms are seen in a topographic trough, indicating a probable former ice-stream under the western part of the ice shelf. A smoother bed and truncated marine sediments under the eastern part of the ice shelf suggest there was slower ice flow in this area. Sediment wedges at the current ice-shelf front show the grounded ice extent likely reached this region; further investigation of these features will allow the style of deglaciation to be better determined. It is common to map geomorphological sediment features in front of ice shelves and beneath modern-day ice streams using geophysical methods, but there are much less data documenting landforms beneath ice shelves. The data presented here were collected as part of pre-site survey for an envisaged sub-ice shelf geological drilling campaign. These data cover a large portion of the Ekström ice shelf and also extend into the grounded ice areas. Data were collected using an on-ice vibroseis source combined with a snowstreamer. This method of collection is fast and effective allowing for a high volume of data collection. For example, in the 2016/17 season ~280 km of multi-fold seismic reflection data were collected over a 25-day period. During the last season and ongoing planning, pre-site surveys are operated at the Ekströmisen, Dronning Maud Land, close to the Neumayer-Station III, with the primary target to build a stratigraphic age framework of the under-shelf-ice-sediments. These sediments are overlying the Explora Wedge [1], [2], a syn- or postrift volcanic deposit, and dipping north- to north-eastward. Expected ages could range from Late Mesozoic to Quaternary. From new vibroseismic profiles we will select sites for short core seafloor sampling of the oldest and of the youngest sediment sequences to confine their age time span. After that, we could select one or several sites for potential deep drillings (several hundred-meter-deep) with the support of international partner, if we could rise interest. The deep drillings should recover the sediments overlying the Explora Escarpment, and should discover the nature of the Explora Wedge as well. We expect that the overlying sediment sequences could reveal the history of polar amplification and climate changes in this part of Antarctica, the build-up of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet during past warmer climates and its Cenozoic and future dynamic and variability. The plan for seasons 2017/18 and 2018/19 are the testing of different sea floor sampling techniques through Hot Water Drill (HWD) holes. To select the drill sites for this shallow coring additional high resolution seismic will be acquired as well. Having holes through the shelf ice and sampling the sea floor will provide the unique opportunity for further piggy bag experiments consisting of multi-disciplinary nature. Experiments and measuring setup for oceanography, sea and shelf ice physics, geophysics, geology, hydrography, and biogeochemistry could be planned to characterize the sea-ice and shelf ice system, underlying water column, and the sediments. Video characterization underneath the shelf ice and at the seafloor, sediment trap deployment, seafloor mapping with an AUV (Leng, DFKI, ROBEX) could lead as well to innovative new interdisciplinary observations and discoveries of the sub-ice environment and ecosystem [3]. The grounding zone, where an ice sheet becomes a floating ice shelf, is known to be a key threshold region for ice flow and stability. A better understanding of ice dynamics and sediment transport across such zones will improve knowledge about contemporary and palaeo ice flow, as well as past ice extent. Here we present a set of seismic reflection profiles crossing the grounding zone and continuing to the shelf edge of Ekström Ice Shelf, East Antarctica. Using an on-ice vibroseis source combined with a snowstreamer we have imaged a range of sub-glacial and sub-shelf sedimentary and geomorphological features; from layered sediment deposits to elongated flow features. The acoustic properties of the features as well as their morphology allow us to draw conclusions as to their material properties and origin. These results will eventually be integrated with numerical models of ice dynamics to quantify past and present interactions between ice and the solid Earth in East Antarctica; leading to a better understanding of future contributions of this region to sea-level rise.

Tropical savannas cover over 20% of land surface. They sustain a high diversity of mammalian herbivores and promote frequent fires, both of which are dependent on the underlying grass composition. These habitats are typically dominated by relatively few taxa, and the evolutionary origins of the dominant grass species are largely unknown. Here, we trace the origins of the genus Themeda, which contains a number of widespread grass species dominating tropical savannas. Complete chloroplast genomes were assembled for seven samples and supplemented with chloroplast and nuclear ITS markers for 71 samples representing 18 of the 27 Themeda species. Phylogenetic analysis supports a South Asian origin for both the genus and the widespread dominant T. triandra. This species emerged ~1.5 Ma from a group that had lived in the savannas of Asia for several million years. It migrated to Australia ~1.3 Ma and to mainland Africa ~0.5 Ma, where it rapidly spread in pre-existing savannas and displaced other species. Themeda quadrivalvis, the second most widespread Themeda species, is nested within T. triandra based on whole chloroplast genomes, and may represent a recent evolution of an annual growth form that is otherwise almost indistinguishable from T. triandra. The recent spread and modern-day dominance of T. triandra highlight the dynamism of tropical grassy biomes over millennial time-scales that has not been appreciated, with dramatic shifts in species dominance in recent evolutionary times. The ensuing species replacements likely had profound effects on fire and herbivore regimes across tropical savannas.

Suggests that we should consider the stage directions in Shakespeare's early texts, particularly the 1623 Folio, as snippets of narrative or free indirect discourse, rather than as clues to or for performance.

Background: As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. Methods: We designed a prospective international 7-day cohort study of outcomes following elective adult inpatient surgery in 27 countries. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes were death following a complication (failure to rescue) and death in hospital. Process measures were admission to critical care immediately after surgery or to treat a complication and duration of hospital stay. A single definition of critical care was used for all countries. Results: A total of 474 hospitals in 19 high-, 7 middle- and 1 low-income country were included in the primary analysis. Data included 44 814 patients with amedian hospital stay of 4 (range 2-7) days. A total of 7508 patients (16.8%) developed one or more postoperative complication and 207 died (0.5%). The overall mortality among patients who developed complications was 2.8%. Mortality following complications ranged from 2.4% for pulmonary embolism to 43.9% for cardiac arrest. A total of 4360 (9.7%) patients were admitted to a critical care unit as routine immediately after surgery, of whom 2198 (50.4%) developed a complication, with 105 (2.4%) deaths. A total of 1233 patients (16.4%) were admitted to a critical care unit to treat complications, with 119 (9.7%) deaths. Despite lower baseline risk, outcomes were similar in low- and middle-income compared with high-income countries. Conclusions: Poor patient outcomes are common after inpatient surgery. Global initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments should also address the need for safe perioperative care.

Pervasive Refusal Syndrome was introduced to the child and adolescent psychiatric literature by Lask, Britten, Kroll, Magagna and Tranter in 1991. It is not a formal diagnosis classified within the DSM-V (APA, 2013) or ICD-10 (WHO, 1994). However, it is employed clinically as a descriptive label to denote a specific constellation of symptoms. It is understood to be characterised by a profound and pervasive refusal across different domains: eating, drinking, speech, mobilisation, and personal care (Lask et al., 1991). It is reported to be accompanied with an active rejection of help, social withdrawal and school refusal (Lask et al., 1991; Thompson & Nunn, 1997). A literature review highlighted that perspectives on PRS are predominantly based on expert professional opinion; the experiences and perspectives of children and their families are underrepresented. This exploratory study aimed to address this gap in the literature by examining how parents made sense of their child being given a diagnosis of PRS and what it was like to experience their child being unwell. Furthermore it aimed to explore how parents experienced and negotiated the treatment process. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants. The data generated from the interviews was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Three superordinate themes were identified and represented: parents’ perspectives and experiences of PRS and its treatment; parents’ experiences of and relationships with professionals; and the personal “journey” that parents experienced. The findings suggested that parents’ experiences and meaning making processes were delineated by stages, which reflected the trajectory of their child’s difficulties. It seemed each stage brought new experiences, understandings and challenges. This study has provided a novel contribution to the literature and has offered new insights into the diagnosis from the perspective of a parent. The implications for clinical practice and recommendations for future research are outlined.

Increasing oxytocin (OT) in the central amygdala (CeA) via infusion of a selective OT agonist (Viviani et al., 2011) or optogenetic stimulation of hypothalamic neurons (Knobloch et al., 2012) reduced conditioned freezing responses. In contrast, intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of OT increased conditioned freezing responses (Toth, Neumann, & Slattery, 2012). The route of administration may account for these differences in fear responses. Specifically, i.c.v. OT may target other amygdala areas such as the basolateral amygdala (BLA), thereby increasing freezing responses. This thesis investigated CeA and BLA infusions of OT on the acquisition and extinction of context conditioned fear responses. In two experiments investigating the effects of OT on fear acquisition, rats were trained to fear a context under a drug infusion and their retention of fear assessed when drug-free. Intra-CeA and intra-BLA infusions of OT had no effect on freezing responses across the conditioning session. However, fear responses were reduced at test indicating that OT impaired the acquisition of context conditioned fear. In 8 experiments investigating the effects of OT on fear extinction, rats were trained to fear a context, their fear extinguished under a drug infusion or the drug was infused immediately after extinction and their retention of extinguished fear assessed when drug-free. Infusion of OT into the CeA impaired, whereas infusion into the BLA facilitated the extinction of fear responses. This was blocked by co-infusion of a selective OT antagonist (OTA; desGly-NH2-d(CH2)5[D-Tyr2,Thr4]OVT) suggesting OT receptor specificity. OT infused into the BLA after extinction training had no effect on fear responses at test suggesting that OT does not affect the consolidation of extinction learning in the BLA. In contrast, OT infused into the CeA after extinction training reduced fear responses at test suggesting that OT had impaired the consolidation of extinction learning in this nucleus. OTA infused into the CeA reduced freezing responses across the extinction session whereas BLA-OTA had no effect. This suggests that endogenous CeA-OT maintains freezing responses across the extinction session whereas endogenous BLA-OT may not influence fear responding or the depression of fear responses that occur across extinction training. Lastly, an infusion of muscimol into the BLA and CeA had effects similar to OT on long-term depression of fear responses suggesting that OT may influence fear extinction via an increase in GABA activity.

This comparative case study describes the literacy practices of two groups of adolescents as they sought to solve authentic problems through engineering design processes. Three types of data were collected as the groups addressed these problems: video- and audio-recordings of their conversations; adolescent-generated products; and pre- and post-challenge interviews. The authors used existing coding schemes of engineering design activity to identify when the adolescents enacted different stages of engineering design, as well as a modified form of constant comparative analysis to identify the literacy practices that corresponded with each stage. The analysis indicates that applications of literacy practices at each stage of the engineering design process enhanced the adolescents' overall design activity, whereas the absence of literacy practices often impeded the viability of their final designs. The authors suggest implications for high school engineering and science teachers who seek to enhance their students' design activity through literacy instruction.

While traditional radio stations are subject to extensive government regulations, Internet radio stations remain largely unregulated. As Internet radio usage has increased certain stakeholders have begun to argue that these Internet radio broadcasters are providing significant and diverse programming to American audiences and that government regulation of spectrum-using radio station ownership may be further relaxed. One of the primary justifications for regulation of ownership has been to protect diversity in broadcasting. This study hypothesizes that Internet radio broadcasting does add diversity to the radio broadcasting industry and that it should be considered as relevant by regulators. This study evaluates the role of Internet radio broadcasters according to five criteria intended to gauge the level of diversity being delivered to listeners online. By measuring the levels of format, channel, ownership, location and language diversity among Internet radio stations, it is possible to draw benchmark lessons about the new medium's ability to provide Americans with diverse broadcasting options. The study finds that Internet radio broadcasters are in fact adding measurable diversity to the radio broadcasting industry. Internet broadcasters are providing audiences with access to an increasing number of stations, owners, formats, and language choices, and it is likely that technologies aiding in the mobility of access as well as broadband evolution will reinforce these findings., Comment: 29th TPRC Conference, 2001

For patients with incurable neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's (HD) and Parkinson's disease, cell transplantation has been explored as a potential treatment option. Here, we present the first clinicopathological study of a patient with HD in receipt of cell-suspension striatal allografts who took part in the NEST-UK multicenter clinical transplantation trial. Using various immunohistochemical techniques, we found a discrepancy in the survival of grafted projection neurons with respect to grafted interneurons as well as major ongoing inflammatory and immune responses to the grafted tissue with evidence of mutant huntingtin aggregates within the transplant area. Our results indicate that grafts can survive more than a decade post-transplantation, but show compromised survival with inflammation and mutant protein being observed within the transplant site. ‘Liberamente inspirati dell’ “OTELLO” di WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’ (‘loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Othello’), according to the closing credits, Iago (dir. Volfango di Biasi, 2009) was released on 27 February 2009 (in Italy only). While the film takes Othello as its source of stimulation, it reimagines the play in several key respects. It features a lengthy ‘preface’, taking some considerable time (over half of the film’s length) to set up the drama of act 1. Approximating iambic pentameter with a demotic Italian vernacular, Iago then proceeds to follow the plot and structure of Othello quite closely. But completing the film’s adaptive excess is an ‘additional act’: this ‘extra’ screen time shifts the anticipated ending of Othello and delivers a narrative attendant upon, and emerging from, the Shakespearian conclusions of act 5.

Objectives To describe the level and trends of point prevalence, deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for other musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, i.e. those not covered by specific estimates generated for RA, OA, low back pain, neck pain and gout, from 1990 to 2017 by age, sex and sociodemographic index. Methods Publicly available modelled estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study were extracted and reported as counts and age-standardized rates per 100 000 population for 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017. Results Globally, the age-standardized point prevalence estimates and deaths rates of other MSK disorders in 2017 were 4151.1 and 1.0 per 100 000. This was an increase of 3.4% and 7.2%, respectively. The age-standardized DALY rate in 2017 was 380.2, an increase of 3.4%. The point prevalence estimate was higher among females and increased with age. This peaked in the 65–69 year age group for both females and males in 2017, followed by a decreasing trend for both sexes. At the national level, the highest age-standardized point prevalence estimates in 2017 were seen in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. The largest increases in age-standardized point prevalence estimates were observed in Romania, Croatia and Armenia. Conclusion The burden of other MSK disorders is proven to be substantial and increasing worldwide, with a notable intercountry variation. Data pertaining to specific diseases within this overarching category are required for future GBD MSK estimates. This would enable policymakers to better allocate resources and provide interventions appropriately.

This essay catalogues major initiatives in the series and for the first time examines its integration of women editors, it's contributions to Shakespeare textual theory and editorial practice, and considers its efforts towards inclusion and looks to the future of editing and the series itself.

Objective To report the levels and trends of prevalence, deaths, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) due to musculoskeletal disorders, categorized as low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout, and other musculoskeletal disorders, across 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017 according to age, sex, and Sociodemographic Index (SDI; a composite of sociodemographic factors). Methods Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2017. The fatal and nonfatal burdens of musculoskeletal disorders were estimated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and Bayesian meta‐regression tool, respectively. Estimates were provided for all musculoskeletal disorders and the corresponding 6 categories at global, regional, and national levels from 1990 to 2017. Counts and age‐standardized rates per 100,000 population along with 95% uncertainty intervals (95% UIs) were reported for prevalence, deaths, and DALYs. Results Globally, there were ~1.3 billion prevalent cases (95% UI 1.2 billion, 1.4 billion), 121.3 thousand deaths (95% UI 105.6 thousand, 126.2 thousand), and 138.7 million DALYs (95% UI 101.9 million, 182.6 million) due to musculoskeletal disorders in 2017. Age‐standardized prevalence, death, and DALY rates per 100,000 population were 16,276.2 (95% UI 15,495.5, 17,145.8), 1.6 (95% UI 1.4, 1.6), and 1,720 (95% UI 1,264.4, 2,259.2), respectively. Age‐standardized prevalence (−1.6% [95% UI −2.4, −0.8]) and DALY rates (−3.5% [95% UI −4.7, −2.3]) decreased slightly from 1990. The global point prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders in 2017 was higher in women than in men and increased with age up to the oldest age group. Globally, the proportion of prevalent cases according to category of musculoskeletal disorders in 2017 was greatest for low back pain (36.8%), followed by other musculoskeletal disorders (21.5%), OA (19.3%), neck pain (18.4%), gout (2.6%), and RA (1.3%). These proportions did not change appreciably compared with 1990. The burden due to musculoskeletal conditions was higher in developed countries. The countries with the highest age‐standardized prevalence rates of musculoskeletal disorders in 2017 were Switzerland (23,346.0 [95% UI 22,392.6, 24,329.8]), Chile (23,007.9 [95% UI 21,746.5, 24,165.8]), and Denmark (22,166.1 [95% UI 20,817.2, 23,542.1]). The greatest increases from 1990 were found in Chile (10.8% [95% UI 6.6, 15.4]), Benin (8.8% [95% UI 6.7, 11.1]), and El Salvador (8.5% [95% UI 5.5, 11.9]). Conclusion There is a large burden of musculoskeletal disorders globally, with some notable inter‐country variation. Some countries have twice the burden of other countries. Increasing population awareness regarding risk factors, consequences, and evidence‐informed treatment strategies for musculoskeletal disorders with a focus on the older female population in developed countries is needed, particularly for low back and neck pain and OA, which contribute a large burden among this cohort.
