The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between anxiety and counseling competencies among Malaysian trainee counselors within supervision. Recently, counseling competencies have been highlighted in counselor education and training as it is one of the professional ethics to be obliged. However, there were a limited number of studies on how anxiety was affecting the competencies of counselors-in-training. Previous literature shows that most of the studies regarding this topic have been conducted more in Western countries than in Malaysia. Therefore, this study was implemented in public universities that offer bachelor counseling programs all across Malaysia. The respondents comprising n=204 final year trainee counselors undergo internship and n=62 counseling lecturers are supervisors. The result proves that anxiety has a negative significant correlation with counselor trainees’ competencies r=-.399**. Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) is a facet-specific climate for psychological health and safety which constitutes an important organizational resource for creating a conducive work environment. The process to regain/restore energy expended at work, known as "recovery," also plays a pivotal role for individuals; however, this process, together with PSC, remains largely underexplored. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the role of PSC in enhancing the moderating role of individuals' psychological detachment and relaxation during weekends on the relationship between daily job demands in Week 1 and daily emotional exhaustion in Week 2. Data from a shortitudinal study of 178 teachers (in total, 534 diaries) in Terengganu, Malaysia, over two consecutive weeks, were operationalized at the individual level and daily level using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) software. The analysis showed that the daily experience of job demands in the prior week led to an increment of emotional exhaustion in the following week. Interestingly, the interaction role of PSC*psychological detachment and PSC*relaxation moderated the relationship between daily job demands and daily emotional exhaustion. Overall, this study highlights the importance of individual off-job recovery time and that building good PSC at work is fundamental in compensating for the adverse relationships between job demands and its consequences.

Tujuan dan Latarbelakang: Kajian bertujuan mengkaji program rawatan dan pemulihan di CCSC dalam kalangan residen dan bukan residen. Residen merupakan penghuni sepenuh masa dan mengikuti program rawatan dan pemulihan yang dikendalikan oleh CCSC. Bukan residen adalah disebaliknya. Kajian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti peramal yang signifikan terhadap motivasi rawatan dan efikasi diri untuk tidak terlibat dari dadah dalam kalangan residen dan bukan residen. Metodologi: Empat buat CCSC telah dipilih dalam kajian ini. Seramai 102 responden iaitu 55 orang residen (53.4 %) dan 47 orang bukan residen (47.6%) daripada empat buah CCSC mengisi soal selidik berkaitan dengan motivasi rawatan dan efikasi diri untuk menjauhi dadah. Dapatan: Tempoh tamat program rawatan dan pemulihan di CCSC berkenaan adalah berbeza, iaitu antara dua minggu hingga lapan bulan. Hasil analisis model regresi menunjukkan bahawa motivasi yang tinggi untuk mendapatkan rawatan adalah dalam kalangan penghuni residen dan dikaitkan tempoh penglibatan di CCSC yang lebih panjang. Seterusnya, tempoh tidak terlibat dengan dadah yang lebih panjang mempunyai hubungan yang signifikan dengan efikasi diri yang tinggi untuk menjauhi dadah. Dapatan kajian ini juga mengenalpasti situasi berisiko tinggi yang boleh menyebabkan seseorang kembali menagih. Antara faktor risiko tersebut ialah terjumpa dadah, terjumpa rakan-rakan penagih serta dipelawa untuk menggunakan dadah, terjumpa dengan sesuatu yang mengingatkan kepada dadah dan terlibat dengan peristiwa-peristiwa yang boleh menimbulkan emosi negatif. Sumbangan: Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan kepentingan penilaian tahap motivasi rawatan dan tahap efikasi diri dalam kalangan residen dan bukan residen CCSC, yang seterusnya membantu kejayaan rawatan dan penilaian keberkesanan rawatan. ABSTRACT Background and Purpose: The study aims to analyze residents and non-residents who are participating in a treatment and rehabilitation programme at the Cure and Care Service Center (CCSC). The resident is a full-time residential and participates in the CCSC treatment and rehabilitation program. The non-resident is the opposite of this. The study also aims to identify significant predictors of the motivation of treatment and self-efficacy not to be involved in the drug. Methodology: Four CCSCs have been selected in this study. A total of 102 respondents, 55 residents (53.4%) and 47 non-residents (47.6%) at four CCSCs filled up questionnaires related to treatment motivation and self-efficacy to avoid drugs. Findings: Duration of the treatment and rehabilitation programme at CCSC is different, ranging from two weeks to eight months. The results of the regression model analysis showed that high motivation for treatment is among residents and is associated with longer duration of engagement at CCSC. Furthermore, periods not involved with drugs have a significant relationship with high self-efficacy to avoid drugs. The findings also recognize high-risk situations that may lead to relapse. Among the identified risk factors is finding a drug, finding drug addicts and being invited to use drugs, finding something that reminds respondents of drugs and engages with events that can cause negative emotions. Contributions: This study highlights the importance of screening the level of treatment motivation and the level of self-fficacy among CCSC residents, which contribute to treatment success and effectiveness evaluation. Purpose In Malaysia, the trend of HIV transmission has shifted from intravenous drug use to sexual intercourse, and men who have sex with men (MSM) have become the main driver due to high-risk sexual behaviour. Thus, treatment and care, which also involves counselling, for men who have sex with men and who are living with HIV (MSM living with HIV) are crucial. This study aims to explore the experiences of MSM living with HIV and participating in counselling session during treatment and care at two public hospitals. Method This qualitative study with a grounded-theory approach was conducted at two public hospitals in Malaysia. Five participants who were MSM living with HIV were selected through purposive sampling. They participated in semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and diary entries, each of which was conducted three times. The data were analysed using grounded theory with N-Vivo 8 to determine themes. Result The participants were found to experience feelings of emptiness and hopelessness because of their unreadiness to accept their HIV status. These feelings made their participation in counselling sessions challenging. Consequently, the participants found counselling sessions unhelpful due to their unwillingness to participate in the counselling relationship. Conclusion The findings of the study highlight the need for counselling sessions to focus more on feelings related to unreadiness to improve the self-esteem and ability to create positive relationships with others of MSM living with HIV. It is also important to strengthen the training and skills among HIV counsellors to enhance counselling services for these men.

The main purpose of this research is to understand the experiences and psychological wellbeing of nurses working in palliative ward. There were two research questions driving this research throughout the process of data collection and data analysis. Four nurses from the palliative ward participated in this research to provide details on their psychological wellbeing. Semi- structured interview questions together with observation and simple survey questions were used to gather the data. Thematic analysis was used to identify the meaningful themes for each research question. Six main themes were identified: autonomy, environmental mastery, positive relation, personal growth, self-acceptance and purpose in life. The findings are highly relevant with the theory and literature. The findings indicate that the participants have good psychological wellbeing due to their huge experiences in palliative ward.

Having a counselor with a different religious background from the client might lead to conflicting perspectives. This chapter intends to explore the perceptive of a Muslim client in choosing a non-Muslim counselor. The concept of helping process, which is highly respectable in the teaching of Islam, is explicated. Muslims are encouraged to help each other, especially those who are in need. Preferably, a non-Muslim counselor should have some basic understanding of the Pillars of Islam prior to conducting a counseling session with a Muslim client. The knowledge will facilitate the counselor understanding process of the clients without bias. It is anticipated that the information presented herewith would benefit non-Muslim counselors and help them in understanding their Muslim clients better. This chapter also examines the cultural issues that may influence the effectiveness of a counseling session between Muslim clients and non-Muslim counselors.

Background: This study was completed at two general hospitals in Malaysia that provide treatment for HIV patients. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of people infected with HIV (PIWH) and how they cope with HIV. Methods: This qualitative study was based on a social constructivist and grounded theory approach. A total of 12 PIWH were selected by purposive sampling, all of whom participated in semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews, which were supported with non-participant observations and diary entries on three occasions for each participant. The interviews and diaries were transcribed and analysed using the grounded theory approach, which was assisted by utilizing NVIVO-8 to identify the themes related to the experiences of the participants. Results: PIWH experienced challenges related to their career and relationships with family and others. These challenges led to difficulties in gaining employment and career development, as well as feelings of denial, being uncomfortable, rejection, and labelling. They found that their lives were totally and dramatically changed after being tested positive for HIV. Conclusions: Among PIWH, HIV impacted relationships with significant others and career development. The absence of support and acceptance from significant others affected the ability of PIWH to cope with their daily challenges. The results of this study have implications for policymakers in terms of gaining sufficient knowledge and awareness to provide prevention programmes for HIV/AIDS.

This study aimed to examine the level of career maturity and its implications on career counselling programs. It also attempted to determine whether the variables in this study were related to other variables, such as gender, race, stream of study, academic achievement, and family’s socio-economic status. Total of 1060 respondents from 106 national type secondary schools in Terengganu were identified as research samples and they were selected through a systematic random sampling process. This survey type of research used a questionnaire and interview protocol. The questionnaire comprised of three sub-scales: (i) Personal information and student involvement in career guidance and counselling programs, (ii) Career Maturity Inventory. The Cronbch’s alpha value for career maturity was 0.92. Data was analysed using the descriptive analysis i.e. frequency, percentage, t-Test, mean, and standard deviation. Besides that, inferential analysis such as ANOVA and linear regression was also applied to test the research hypothesis. The result indicates that, in general, career maturity among students ranked from low to medium level. It also found that students’ career maturity was significantly different based on gender, stream of study, academic achievement, and family’s socio-economic status. However, there was no significant difference between students’ career maturity based on race. The report concluded that although career guidance and counselling programs play an important role in the development of the two variables, however, as indicated earlier, gender, stream of study, academic achievement, and family’s socio-economic status also played their roles. The findings have important implications on the development of career guidance and counselling programs in schools.
