The source G9.62+0.20E surprises again! Several of the associated 6.7- and 12.2-GHz methanol masers are experiencing contemporaneous and systematic velocity drifts. Both 6.7- and 12.2-GHz methanol features blueward of v = +1.2 km s−1 are blue shifting while those redward are red shifting. A best-fitting rotating Keplerian disc with a central mass of ∼12 M⊙, radii Rinner = 5 au and Router = 5000 au, and at an inclination angle of 22○ either precessing and/or experiencing infall explains these systematic velocity drifts. Also three more distinct 6.7-GHz methanol maser features are found to vary periodically; two very weak and one obviously periodic only after 2003. Evidence of periodicity is seen as early as 1992. Time lags are confirmed but the cause is unclear. It is possible this source will surprise again.

ESO 149-G003 is a close-by, isolated dwarf irregular galaxy. Previous observations with the ATCA indicated the presence of anomalous neutral hydrogen (HI) deviating from the kinematics of a regularly rotating disc. We conducted follow-up observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope during the 16-dish Early Science programme as well as with the MeerLICHT optical telescope. Our more sensitive radio observations confirm the presence of anomalous gas in ESO 149-G003, and further confirm the formerly tentative detection of an extraplanar HI component in the galaxy. Employing a simple tilted-ring model, in which the kinematics is determined with only four parameters but including morphological asymmetries, we reproduce the galaxy's morphology, which shows a high degree of asymmetry. By comparing our model with the observed HI, we find that in our model we cannot account for a significant (but not dominant) fraction of the gas. From the differences between our model and the observed data cube we estimate that at least 7%-8% of the HI in the galaxy exhibits anomalous kinematics, while we estimate a minimum mass fraction of less than 1% for the morphologically confirmed extraplanar component. We investigate a number of global scaling relations and find that, besides being gas-dominated with a neutral gas-to-stellar mass ratio of 1.7, the galaxy does not show any obvious global peculiarities. Given its isolation, as confirmed by optical observations, we conclude that the galaxy is likely currently acquiring neutral gas. We present details of the Automated Radio Telescope Imaging Pipeline (ARTIP) and results of a sensitive blind search for HI and OH absorbers at $z5.4\times10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$, the survey has probed only the outskirts of star-forming galaxies at $\rho>30$ kpc. MALS with the expected $\Delta z\sim10^{3-4}$ will overcome this limitation and provide stringent constraints on the cold gas fraction of galaxies in diverse environments over $0, Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, accepted in ApJ

The first periodic Class II methanol maser was reported on in 2003. Since that time, a number of different monitoring programmes have found periodic masers, as well as other modes of variability. In a few cases, periodicity has been found in other maser species such as formaldehyde and water. Several distinct characteristics of light curves have been noted, possibly pointing to different underlying mechanisms for periodicity if one assumes a linear response to incoming radiation. I will give a brief overview of the known periodic sources, discuss current theories, and present new results obtained from monitoring mainline hydroxyl masers using the seven-element Karoo Array Telescope (KAT-7) during its science verification phase.

We present the confusion-limited 1.28 GHz MeerKAT DEEP2 image covering one $\approx 68'$ FWHM primary beam area with $7.6''$ FWHM resolution and $0.55 \pm 0.01$ $\mu$Jy/beam rms noise. Its J2000 center position $\alpha=04^h 13^m 26.4^s$, $\delta=-80^\circ 00' 00''$ was selected to minimize artifacts caused by bright sources. We introduce the new 64-element MeerKAT array and describe commissioning observations to measure the primary beam attenuation pattern, estimate telescope pointing errors, and pinpoint $(u,v)$ coordinate errors caused by offsets in frequency or time. We constructed a 1.4 GHz differential source count by combining a power-law count fit to the DEEP2 confusion $P(D)$ distribution from $0.25$ to $10$ $\mu$Jy with counts of individual DEEP2 sources between $10$ $\mu$Jy and $2.5$ mJy. Most sources fainter than $S \sim 100$ $\mu$Jy are distant star-forming galaxies obeying the FIR/radio correlation, and sources stronger than $0.25$ $\mu$Jy account for $\sim93\%$ of the radio background produced by star-forming galaxies. For the first time, the DEEP2 source count has reached the depth needed to reveal the majority of the star formation history of the universe. A pure luminosity evolution of the 1.4 GHz local luminosity function consistent with the Madau & Dickinson (2014) model for the evolution of star-forming galaxies based on UV and infrared data underpredicts our 1.4 GHz source count in the range $-5 \lesssim \log[S(\mathrm{Jy})] \lesssim -4$., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures. Ten new class II methanol masers from the 6.7-GHz Methanol Multibeam survey catalogues III and IV were selected for a monitoring programme at both 6.7 and 12.2 GHz with the 26m Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) radio telescope for two years and nine months, from August 2012 to May 2015. In the sample, only masers associated with G339.986-0.425 were found to show periodic variability at both 6.7 and 12.2 GHz. The existence of periodic variation was tested with four independent methods. The analytical method gave the best estimation of the period, which was 246 $\pm$ 1 days. The time series of G339.986-0.425 show strong correlations across velocity channels and between the 6.7 and 12.2 GHz masers. As a product of the maser monitoring program with the 26m telescope of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO), we present an unprecedented, contemporaneous flaring event of 10 maser transitions in hydroxyl, methanol, and water that began in 2015 January in the massive star-forming region NGC6334I in the velocity range -10 to -2 km/s. The 6.7 GHz methanol and 22.2 GHz water masers began flaring within 22 days of each other, while the 12.2 GHz methanol and 1665 MHz hydroxyl masers flared 80 and 113 days later respectively. The 1665 MHz, 6.7 GHz, and 22.2 GHz masers have all remained in their flared state for nearly 3 years. The brightest flaring components increased by factors of 66, 21, 26, and 20 in the 12.2 and 6.7 GHz methanol, 1665 MHz hydroxyl and 22.2 GHz water maser transitions respectively; some weaker components increased by up to a factor of 145. We also report new maser emission in the 1720, 6031, and 6035 MHz OH lines and the 23.1 GHz methanol line, along with the detection of only the fifth 4660 MHz OH maser. We note the correlation of this event with the extraordinary (sub)millimeter continuum outburst from the massive protostellar system NGC6334I-MM1 and discuss the implications of the observed time lags between different maser velocity components on the nature of the outburst. Finally, we identify two earlier epoch maser flaring events likely associated with this object, which suggest a recurring accretive phenomenon that generates powerful radiative outbursts., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Class II methanol masers are known to be tracers of an early phase of massive star formation. The 6.7- and 12.2-GHz methanol maser transitions can show a significant amount of variability, including periodic variations. Studying maser variability can lead to important insights into conditions in the maser environment but first the maser time-series need to be characterised. The results of long-term monitoring of 8 regularly-varying sources will be presented and methods of period-search discussed.

The MeerKAT radio telescope array is the South African precursor instrument for the proposed Square Kilometer Array's mid-band frequency range. It will be the most sensitive centimetre-wavelength telescope in the southern hemisphere until the SKA is built. It will cover a broad range of astronomical science from the evolution of galaxies to tests of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, using Pulsars. The chosen frequency bands will enable sensitive southern Galactic maser surveys in the main lines of hydroxyl, 12 GHz methanol and perhaps 14.5 GHz formaldehyde lines as well as searches for redshifted water masers from red-shifts greater than about 0.5. Proposals for Large Surveys using MeerKAT were solicited in late 2009 and resulted in some 20 proposals from teams comprising 500 scientists, world-wide. The successful proposals relevant to maser research will be discussed below.

We present Kitty, an unprecedented and near simultaneous flaring event in ten transitions (6 hydroxyl, 1 water and 3 methanol), that began on 1 January 2015 in the massive star-forming region NGC6334F located in the Cat’s Paw Nebula. The brightest components in each transition increased by factors of 20 to 70 in line with a factor of ~70 increase in dust emission luminosity for the source MM1. We also report the detection of only the fifth known 4.660 GHz hydroxyl maser and that it varied in a correlated fashion with 1.720, 6.031, and 6.035 GHz hydroxyl counterparts. We postulate that if Kitty, and two historical flares in 1965 & 1999, are accretion events and are caused by the successive passages of a secondary star disrupting the accretion disk, where the frequency of occurrence is cycling down at a rate of ~2.2, it is possible another event will occur in 2022.

The statistical rate equations are used to model the OH masers to see if they will always have a one-to-one correspondence with the variation of dust temperature. It is concluded that one has to be careful to argue that the masers will always follow the dust temperature variation profile, and it is possible that different maser transitions from the same molecule respond differently to the same dust temperature variations.

We present the light curves of the 6.7 and 12.2 GHz methanol masers in the star forming region G9.62+0.20E for a time span of more than 2600 days. The earlier reported period of 244 days is confirmed. The results of monitoring the 107 GHz methanol maser for two flares are also presented. The results show that flaring occurs in all three masing transitions. It is shown that the average flare profiles of the three masing transitions are similar. The 12.2 GHz masers are the most variable of the three masers with the largest relative amplitude having a value of 2.4. The flux densities for the different masing transitions are found to return to the same level during the low phase of the masers, suggesting that the source of the periodic flaring is situated outside the masing region, and that the physical conditions in the masing region are relatively stable. On the basis of the shape of the light curve we excluded stellar pulsations as the underlying mechanism for the periodicity. It is argued that a colliding wind binary can account for the observed periodicity and provide a mechanism to qualitatively explain periodicity in the seed photon flux and/or the pumping radiation field. It is also argued that the dust cooling time is too short to explain the decay time of about 100 days of the maser flare. A further analysis has shown that for the intervals from days 48 to 66 and from days 67 to 135 the decay of the maser light curve can be interpreted as due to the recombination of a thermal hydrogen plasma with densities of approximately $1.6 \times 10^6 \mathrm{cm^{-3}}$ and $6.0 \times 10^5 \mathrm{cm^{-3}}$ respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figuers

General characteristics of methanol (CH3OH) maser emission are summarized. It is shown that methanol maser sources are concentrated in the spiral arms. Most of the methanol maser sources from the Perseus arm are associated with embedded stellar clusters and a considerable portion is situated close to compact HII regions. Almost 1/3 of the Perseus Arm sources lie at the edges of optically identified HII regions which means that massive star formation in the Perseus Arm is to a great extent triggered by local phenomena. A multiline analysis of the methanol masers allows us to determine the physical parameters in the regions of maser formation. Maser modelling shows that class II methanol masers can be pumped by the radiation of the warm dust as well as by free-free emission of a hypercompact region hcHII with a turnover frequency exceeding 100 GHz. Methanol masers of both classes can reside in the vicinity of hcHIIs. Modelling shows that periodic changes of maser fluxes can be reproduced by variations of the dust temperature by a few percent which may be caused by variations in the brightness of the central young stellar object reflecting the character of the accretion process. Sensitive observations have shown that the masers with low flux densities can still have considerable amplification factors. We have conducted the first parallax and proper motion measurements of 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission using the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA). The parallax of G339.884$-$1.259 measured from five epochs of observations is 0.48$\pm $0.08 mas, corresponding to a distance of $2.1^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ kpc, placing it in the Scutum spiral arm. This is consistent (within the combined uncertainty) with the kinematic distance estimate for this source at 2.5$\pm $0.5 kpc using the latest Solar and Galactic rotation parameters. We find from the Lyman continuum photon flux that the embedded core of the young star is of spectral type B1, demonstrating that luminous 6.7 GHz methanol masers can be associated with high-mass stars towards the lower end of the mass range.

The class II methanol maser source G9.62+0.20E undergoes periodic flares at both 6.7 and12.2 GHz. The flare starting in 2001 October was observed at se ven epochs over three monthsusing the VLBA at 12.2 GHz. High angular resolution images (beam size ∼ 1.7 x 0.6 mas)were obtained, enabling us to observe changes in 16 individual maser components. It wasfound that while existing maser spots increased in flux densi ty, no new spots developed andno changes in morphology were observed. This rules out any mechanism which disturbs themasing region itself, implyingthat the flares are caused by a change in either the seed or pumpphoton levels. A time delay of 1–2 weeks was observed between groups of maser features.These delays can be explained by light travel time between maser groups. A sample of 54 6.7-GHz methanol masers was monitored using the Hartebeesthoek 26-m telescope during the period 1999 January – 2003 March. The observations were taken at 1–2 week intervals, with daily observations when possible if a source was seen to be varying rapidly. It was found that the majority of the sources display a significant level of variability. The time-range of variations range from a few days up to several years. The types of behaviour observed included non-varying, monotonic increases or decreases, as well as aperiodic, quasi-periodic and periodic variations. Seven sources show clear evidence of periodicity, with periods ranging from 132 d up to 520 d.

Class II methanol masers are believed to be associated with high-mass star formation. Recent observations by Walsh et al. and Phillips et al. reported a very low detection rate of radio continuum emission toward a large sample of 6.7-GHz methanol masers. These results raise questions about the evolutionary phase and/or the mass range of the exciting stars of the masers. Here we report the results of a VLA search for 8.4-GHz continuum emission from the area around five Class II methanol masers, four of which were not detected by Walsh et al. at 8.6 GHz. Radio continuum emission was detected in all five fields although only two of the nine maser spot groups in the five fields were found to be superimposed on radio continuum sources that appear to be ultra-compact H II (UCH II) regions. This suggests that continuum counterparts for some masers might be found in further surveys for which the sensitivity level is lower than 1 mJy beam - 1 . Considering our results as well as observations from other studies of methanol masers we conclude that masers without radio continuum counterparts are most likely associated with high-mass stars in a very early evolutionary stage, either prior to the formation of a UCH II region or when the H II region is still optically thick at centimetre wavelengths. With one exception all maser spot groups in the five fields were found to be associated with mid-infrared objects detected in the Midcourse Space Experiment survey.

The class II methanol maser source G9.62+0.20E has been monitored since 1999 at 6.7 GHz and since 2000 at 12.2 GHz. Six flares have been observed to date. These flares are periodic, with an interval of 246 d between flares. The duration of the flare is approximately 3 months, with maximum amplitude reached a month after the start of the flare.

Near-infrared (NIR) images at I, J, H and K bands were made of 12 southern 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources. Astrometry accurate to 0.5 arcsec was obtained. The positions of known H II regions, water masers, hydroxyl masers, and mid- and far-infrared objects in the region are examined in order to try to determine the nature of the methanol maser source. Deeply embedded NIR sources were found close to seven out of 14 maser sites. In three cases, no NIR source, H II region, water maser or hydroxyl maser could be found in likely association with the methanol masers.

Methanol masers occuring in thirteen star-forming regions at both 6.7 and 12.2 GHz were monitored for a year at one to two week intervals using the 26-m Hartebeesthoek telescope. Correlated variations occurred in the masers in six of the ten sources that provided useful data.

A program monitoring the variability of a sample of 56 6.7 GHz methanol masers was started in December 1998. The sources are observed on a weekly basis. We present preliminary results of the monitoring program.

Near-infrared photometry was performed on 56 southern 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources. A simple spherically symmetric model of the radiative transfer through a dust shell was developed and used to study the conditions in the dust cloud in which the masers are produced. The parameters investigated were the size of the cloud, the spectral type of the embedded star, the optical depth of the dust cloud and the dust density distribution. It was found that the infrared colours of the models have a complex dependence on the parameters and that no unique combination of parameter values explains the spectral energy distribution of any particular source. The model effectively reproduces the far-infrared (IRAS) colours but cannot simultaneously explain the near-infrared colours for any of the observed sources.

We report the results of 10 years of monitoring of six regularly varying 6.7 GHz methanol masers using the Hartebeesthoek 26m telescope. Observations were done at intervals of 1--2 weeks, with faster sampling during flaring episodes. Four of the sources were also monitored at 12.2 GHz and show correlated variations. We find the Lomb-Scargle periodogram to be the most sensitive method to search for periodicity but possibly prone to false detections. Periods range from 132.8 days (with 26 cycles observed) to 509 days (with 7 cycles observed). Five of the sources show arguably periodic variations, while G331.13-0.24 shows strong periodicity in one peak, with large and variable delays in other peaks., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 13 pages, 26 figures

A number of mechanisms to understand the periodic class II methanol masers associated with some high-mass star forming regions have been proposed in the past. Two recent proposals, ie. by Parfenov &Sobolev (2014) and Sanna et al. (2015) have been presented in order to explain the periodic masers in sources with light curves similar to the methanol masers in G9.62+0.20E. We evaluate to what extent the proposals and models presented by these authors can explain the light curve of the methanol masers in G9.62+0.20E. It is argued that neither of the proposed mechanisms can reproduce the light curves of the methanol masers in G9.62+0.20E.

An intensive monitoring program of 54 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources was carried out at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory from January 1999 to April 2003. The monitoring program was subsequently continued on 19 sources of interest. Analysis of the resulting time-series stretching over eight years shows that six of the sources are periodic, with periods ranging from 133 days to 504 days. The waveforms in individual sources range from sinusoidal fluctuations to sharp flares and there can be other long term trends in the time-series. The amplitudes of the variations can also change from cycle to cycle. A sample of 54 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources was monitored at HartRAO for 4 years, and 11 12.2-GHz methanol masers for 3 years. The majority of the maser features display a significant degree of variability but with a wide range of timescales and behaviors. Some maser features remained unvarying throughout the monitoring programme, while others showed sporadic flares or sudden drops in flux density. Yet another group show quasi-periodic and periodic variations. In some cases the maser features dropped below the detection limit for a significant length of time before increasing in intensity and reappearing.

The bright interstellar methanol masers at 12.2 GHz and 6.7 GHz were discovered in 1987 and 1991 respectively. It was soon established that many were quite variable. Goedhart Gaylard & van der Walt (2003) reported that one source, G9.62+0.20E, exhibited flares at 12.2 and 6.7 GHz that appeared to be periodic, repeating every 246 days. Since then, monitoring of this and other possibly periodic sources has continued with the 26-m Hartebeesthoek telescope. We discuss here the full 12.2 GHz time series data of G9.62+0.20 through 2006. The data quality has been much improved by telescope upgrades. Flares in the main maser peak continue, the repetition rate remains close to that originally determined.

Adding VLBI capability to the SKA arrays will greatly broaden the science of the SKA, and is feasible within the current specifications. SKA-VLBI can be initially implemented by providing phased-array outputs for SKA1-MID and SKA1-SUR and using these extremely sensitive stations with other radio telescopes, and in SKA2 by realising a distributed configuration providing baselines up to thousands of km, merging it with existing VLBI networks.
