We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of 20 nm-sized nanoparticles of the half-doped manganite Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3 prepared by sol-gel approach. Neutron powder diffraction patterns show Pbnm orthorhombic symmetry for 10 K < T < 290 K, with lattice parameters a, b, and c in the relationship c/√2 < a < b, indicating a cooperative Jahn–Teller effect, i.e., orbital ordering OO, from below room temperature. In contrast with the bulk samples, in the interval 250 < T < 300 K, the fingerprint of charge ordering (CO) does not manifest itself in the temperature dependence of lattice parameters. However, there are signs of CO in the temperature dependence of magnetization. Accordingly, below 100 K superlattice magnetic Bragg reflections arise, which are consistent with an antiferromagnetic phase strictly related to the bulk Mn ordering of a charge exchange-type (CE-type), but characterized by an increased fraction of ferromagnetic couplings between manganese species themselves. Our results show that in this narrow band half-doped manganite, size reduction only modifies the balance between the Anderson superexchange and Zener double exchange interactions, without destabilizing an overall very robust antiferromagnetic state.

Prostate cancer bone metastases occur frequently in advanced cancer and this is matter of particular attention, due to the great impact on patient's management and considering that a lot of new emerging therapeutic options have been recently introduced. Imaging bone metastases is essential to localize lesions, to establish their size and number, to study characteristics and changes during therapy. Besides radiological imaging, nuclear medicine modalities can image their features and offer additional information about their metabolic behaviour. They can be classified according to physical characteristics, type of detection, mechanism of uptake, availability for daily use. The physiopathology of metastases formation and the mechanisms of tracer uptake are essential to understand the interpretation of nuclear medicine images. Therefore, radiopharmaceuticals for bone metastases can be classified in agents targeting bone (99mTc-phosphonates, 18F-fluoride) and those targeting prostatic cancer cells (18F-fluoromethylcholine, 11C-choline, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose). The modalities using the first group of tracers are planar bone scan, SPECT or SPECT/CT with 99mTc-diphosphonates, and 18F-fluoride PET/CT, while the modalities using the second group include 18F/11C-choline derivatives PET/CT, 18F-FDG PET/CT and PET/CT scans with several other radiopharmaceuticals described in the literature, such as 18F/11C-acetate derivatives, 18F-fluoro-5α-dihydrotestosterone (FDHT), 18F-anti-1-amino-3-fluorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid (FACBC), 18F-2'-fluoro-5-methyl-1-β-D-arabinofuranosyluracil (FMAU) and 68Ga-labeled-prostate specific membrane antigen (PMSA) PET/TC. However, since data on clinical validation for these last novel modalities are not conclusive and/or are not still sufficient in number, at present they can be still considered as promising tools under evaluation. The present paper considers the nuclear modalities today available for the clinical routine. This overview wants to discuss the opportunities and the drawbacks of these current diagnostic tests in a scenario where planar scintigraphy and/or SPECT with phosphonates, is the only metabolic imaging recommended by the most important Guidelines of the Scientific Societies dealing with prostate cancer. Other nuclear medicine modalities are in very few cases just cited, never recommended except in rare situations. Is there space for agents other than 99mTc-phosphonates to image bone lesions from prostate cancer?

There are important questions surrounding the potential contribution of outdoor and indoor air quality in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and perpetuation of COVID-19 epidemic waves. Environmental health may be a critical component of COVID-19 prevention. The public health community and health agencies should consider the evolving evidence in their recommendations and statements, and work to issue occupational guidelines. Evidence coming from the current epidemiological and experimental research is expected to add knowledge about virus diffusion, COVID-19 severity in most polluted areas, inter-personal distance requirements and need for wearing face masks in indoor or outdoor environments. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for maintaining particulate matter concentrations at low levels for multiple health-related reasons, which may also include the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Indoor environments represent even a more crucial challenge to cope with, as it is easier for the SARS-COV2 to spread, remain vital and infect other subjects in closed spaces in the presence of already infected asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic people. The potential merits of preventive measures, such as CO2 monitoring associated with natural or controlled mechanical ventilation and air purification, for schools, indoor public places (restaurants, offices, hotels, museums, theatres/cinemas etc.) and transportations need to be carefully considered. Hospital settings and nursing/retirement homes as well as emergency rooms, infectious diseases divisions and ambulances represent higher risk indoor environments and may require additional monitoring and specific decontamination strategies based on mechanical ventilation or air purification.

A number of nations were forced to declare a total shutdown due to COVID-19 infection, as extreme measure to cope with dramatic impact of the pandemic, with remarkable consequences both in terms of negative health outcomes and economic loses. However, in many countries a “Phase-2” is approaching and many activities will re-open soon, although with some differences depending on the severity of the outbreak experienced and SARS-COV-2 estimated diffusion in the general population. At the present, possible relapses of the epidemic cannot be excluded until effective vaccines or immunoprophylaxis with human recombinant antibodies will be properly set up and commercialized. COVD-19-related quarantines have triggered serious social challenges, so that decision makers are concerned about the risk of wasting all the sacrifices imposed to the people in these months of quarantine. The availability of possible early predictive indicators of future epidemic relapses would be very useful for public health purposes, and could potentially prevent the suspension of entire national economic systems. On 16 March, a Position Paper launched by the Italian Society of Environmental Medicine (SIMA) hypothesized for the first time a possible link between the dramatic impact of COVID-19 outbreak in Northern Italy and the high concentrations of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) that characterize this area, along with its well-known specific climatic conditions. Thereafter, a survey carried out in the U.S. by the Harvard School of Public Health suggested a strong association between increases in particulate matter concentration and mortality rates due to COVID-19. The presence of SARS-COV-2 RNA on the particulate matter of Bergamo, which is not far from Milan and represents the epicenter of the Italian epidemic, seems to confirm (at least in case of atmospheric stability and high PM concentrations, as it usually occurs in Northern Italy) that the virus can create clusters with the particles and be carried and detected on PM10. Although no assumptions can be made concerning the link between this first experimental finding and COVID-19 outbreak progression or severity, the presence of SARS-COV-2 RNA on PM10 of outdoor air samples in any city of the world could represent a potential early indicator of COVID-19 diffusion. Searching for the viral genome on particulate matter could therefore be explored among the possible strategies for adopting all the necessary preventive measures before future epidemics start.

Background The burden of COVID-19 was extremely severe in Northern Italy, an area characterized by high concentrations of particulate matter (PM), which is known to negatively affect human health. Consistently with evidence already available for other viruses, we initially hypothesized the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 presence on PM, and we performed a first experiment specifically aimed at confirming or excluding this research hyphotesys. Methods We have colelcted 34 PM10 samples in Bergamo area (the epicenter of the Italian COVID-19 epidemic) by using two air samplers over a continuous 3-weeks period. Filters were properly stored and underwent RNA extraction and amplification according to WHO protocols in two parallel blind analyses performed by two different authorized laboratories. Up to three highly specific molecular marker genes (E, N, and RdRP) were used to test the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA on particulate matter. Results The first test showed positive results for gene E in 15 out of 16 samples, simultaneously displaying positivity also for RdRP gene in 4 samples. The second blind test got 5 additional positive results for at least one ofthe three marker genes. Overall, we tested 34 RNA extractions for the E, N and RdRP genes, reporting 20 positive results for at least one of the three marker genes, with positivity separately confirmed for all the three markers. Control tests to exclude false positivities were successfully accomplished. Conclusion This is the first evidence that SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be present on PM, thus suggesting a possible use as indicator of epidemic recurrence., Highlights • COVID-19 burden seems more severe in areas with high concentrations of PM. • Particulate matter is already known to have negative effects on human health. • This is the first evidence that SARS-CoV-2RNA can be found on particulate matter.

Pure silica zeolites have been prepared in powder and pellets form with different surface chemical properties in order to investigate how the binding forces in the lipase enzyme adsorption influence the final conformation of the immobilized enzyme and its catalytic activity. The catalytic activity of the adsorbed lipase have been tested in the alkyl esters hydrolysis reaction. The higher alkyl-esters conversion is observed for the lipase immobilized on the supports prepared in OH- media compared to the fluoride media supports. The obtained results can be explained by the two different non-covalent interactions between the external surface of zeolites and the enzyme.

In order to understand the role of the acid–base, electrostatic and covalent interactions between enzyme and support, the catalytic behavior of the Rhizomucor miehei lipase (RML) immobilized on zeolite materials has been studied. The highest lipase activities were obtained when this enzyme, immobilized by adsorption, interacts through acid–base binding forces with the support surface, resulting in activation of the enzyme catalytic center. Due to the interest in biodiesel production by mild enzymatic transesterification, this heterogeneous biocatalyst has been used in transesterification of fatty acids contained in olive oil. The results show a high oleic acid conversion for several reaction cycles with a higher total biodiesel productivity compared to that using the free enzyme.

In view of direct inkjet printing of low-cost sensors, we describe here the thermal printing of a thin film of a commercially available conjugated polymer (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic acid, PEDOT:PSS). The printed film has been investigated by optical microscopy, AFM and cyclic voltammetry. The results have been compared to the ones obtained for a continuous film of the same polymer deposed by spin-coating. No appreciable differences were noted between the electrochemical behaviour of the two samples, indicating that the thermal printing of the polymer did not alter appreciably the material properties. Our findings indicate that the thermal printing route may be then a good alternative for the controlled deposition of thin films of conjugated polymers.

BACKGROUND: Wheat bran contains a large amount of ferulic acid, which can be released through enzymatic hydrolysis and bioconverted into vanillin. A previous study has shown that ferulic acid purification from bran carbohydrates with the Amberlite IRA 95 resin allowed an increased vanillin molar yield. In this work, alternative ferulic acid recovery methods were proposed and the possibility of exploiting the residual carbohydrate-rich water phase was explored. RESULTS: Ferulic acid was recovered from crude wheat bran hydrolyzate by: (i) a hydrophobic sorbent cartridge (ISOLUTE ENV+): (ii) ethyl acetate extraction; and (iii) the resin previously employed. The highest recovery percentage (95%) was obtained with ISOLUTE ENV+, which also allowed an interesting vanillin molar yield from ferulic acid bioconversion (75% from 0.5 mmol L−1 ferulic acid). The residual water phase was a good growth substrate for the microorganism operating the bioconversion. Cells grown on thismatrix could efficiently bioconvert the recovered ferulic acid to vanillin CONCLUSION: The possibility of efficiently recovering ferulic acid from wheat bran hydrolyzates, bioconverting it into vanillin, and valorizing the sugar-rich exhausted water fraction was demonstrated in this work.
