Many applications rely on time-intensive matrix operations, such as factorization, which can be sped up significantly for large sparse matrices by interpreting the matrix as a sparse graph and computing a node ordering that minimizes the so-called fill-in. In this paper, we engineer new data reduction rules for the minimum fill-in problem, which significantly reduce the size of the graph while producing an equivalent (or near-equivalent) instance. By applying both new and existing data reduction rules exhaustively before nested dissection, we obtain improved quality and at the same time large improvements in running time on a variety of instances. Our overall algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art significantly: it not only yields better elimination orders, but it does so significantly faster than previously possible. For example, on road networks, where nested dissection algorithms are typically used as a preprocessing step for shortest path computations, our algorithms are on average six times faster than Metis while computing orderings with less fill-in.

Given a vertex-weighted graph, the maximum weight independent set problem asks for a pair-wise non-adjacent set of vertices such that the sum of their weights is maximum. The branch-and-reduce paradigm is the de facto standard approach to solve the problem to optimality in practice. In this paradigm, data reduction rules are applied to decrease the problem size. These data reduction rules ensure that given an optimum solution on the new (smaller) input, one can quickly construct an optimum solution on the original input. We introduce new generalized data reduction and transformation rules for the problem. A key feature of our work is that some transformation rules can increase the size of the input. Surprisingly, these so-called increasing transformations can simplify the problem and also open up the reduction space to yield even smaller irreducible graphs later throughout the algorithm. In experiments, our algorithm computes significantly smaller irreducible graphs on all except one instance, solves more instances to optimality than previously possible, is up to two orders of magnitude faster than the best state-of-the-art solver, and finds higher-quality solutions than heuristic solvers DynWVC and HILS on many instances. While the increasing transformations are only efficient enough for preprocessing at this time, we see this as a critical initial step towards a new branch-and-transform paradigm.

We perform a systematic study of the $��$-particle excitation from its ground state $0_1^+$ to the $0_2^+$ resonance. The so-called monopole transition form factor is investigated via an electron scattering experiment in a broad $Q^2$-range (from $0.5$ to $5.0$ fm$^{-2}$). The precision of the new data dramatically superseeds that of older sets of data, each covering only a portion of the $Q^2$-range. The new data allow the determination of two coefficients in a low-momentum expansion leading to a new puzzle. By confronting experiment to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations we observe that modern nuclear forces, including those derived within chiral effective field theory which are well tested on a variety of observables, fail to reproduce the excitation of the $��$-particle.

Little is known about the characteristics and treatments of patients with severe asthma across Europe, but both are likely to vary. This is the first study in the European Respiratory Society Severe Heterogeneous Asthma Research collaboration, Patient-centred (SHARP) Clinical Research Collaboration and it is designed to explore these variations. Therefore, we aimed to compare characteristics of patients in European severe asthma registries and treatments before starting biologicals.This was a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of aggregated data from 11 national severe asthma registries that joined SHARP with established patient databases.Analysis of data from 3236 patients showed many differences in characteristics and lifestyle factors. Current smokers ranged from 0% (Poland and Sweden) to 9.5% (Belgium), mean body mass index ranged from 26.2 (Italy) to 30.6 kg·m−2 (the UK) and the largest difference in mean pre-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s % predicted was 20.9% (the Netherlands versus Hungary). Before starting biologicals patients were treated differently between countries: mean inhaled corticosteroid dose ranged from 700 to 1335 µg·day−1 between those from Slovenia versus Poland when starting anti-interleukin (IL)-5 antibody and from 772 to 1344 µg·day−1 in those starting anti-IgE (Slovenia versus Spain). Maintenance oral corticosteroid use ranged from 21.0% (Belgium) to 63.0% (Sweden) and from 9.1% (Denmark) to 56.1% (the UK) in patients starting anti-IL-5 and anti-IgE, respectively.The severe asthmatic population in Europe is heterogeneous and differs in both clinical characteristics and treatment, often appearing not to comply with the current European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society guidelines definition of severe asthma. Treatment regimens before starting biologicals were different from inclusion criteria in clinical trials and varied between countries.

Relational values have recently emerged as a novel concept for research on human-environment relationships, seeking to understand ethical principles that may foster environmental stewardship, coupled with a recognition of nature's contributions to people. At present, most empirical research on relational values uses qualitative methods. Here we review some of the reasons that may have contributed to the lack of quantitative research, besides noting that a lot of existing quantitative empirical research on human-environment relationships already deals with relational values, even if it does not use that terminology. We suggest that incorporating quantitative approaches into the methodological toolkit of relational values research has a number of benefits: First, it contributes to the empirical evidence base testing hypotheses and assumptions emerging from qualitative and conceptual work. Second, it may help identifying core relational values shared across cultures, and this way improve communication and cooperation across different cultures. Third, it may improve the political legitimacy of environmental decision-making via statistically representative measurements of public views. Complementing qualitative with quantitative approaches for relational values research is also in the spirit of integrated valuation and value pluralism.

While many studies have investigated governance‐related values such as sustainability, economic efficiency, or social justice as dimensions of good water governance, the concept of governance‐related values as a separate category of values has received considerably less attention. The present study reviews existing, mostly normative work on governance‐related values and water governance from various disciplines, including policy‐oriented and water ethics literature. The review points towards a lack of studies that seek to understand empirically how governance‐related values are perceived and related in the mind of the public as well as among relevant stakeholders. The study proceeds with an illustration of how quantitative research methods can be used to study these linkages in practice. It uses data from a large household survey on public preferences for governance‐related values conducted in the Upper Paraguay River Basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil, and examines these with exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis techniques. The results suggest that there may be three relevant broad categories of governance‐related values, namely democratic governance‐related values, economic governance‐related values, and scientific governance‐related values. The article concludes by pointing out the need for further empirical research and academic debate on the fundamental ways in which governance‐related values are interrelated as dimensions of good water governance, and environmental governance more broadly.

The Sd(a)/Cad antigen reported on glycoconjugates of human tissues has an increasingly recognized wide impact on the physio-pathology of different biological systems. The last step of its biosynthesis relies on the enzymatic activity of the 1,4-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase-II (B4GALNT2), which shows the highest expression level in healthy colon. Previous studies reported the occurrence in human colonic cells of two B4GALNT2 protein isoforms that differ in the length of their cytoplasmic tail, the long isoform showing an extended 66-amino acid tail. We examined here, the subcellular distribution of the two B4GALNT2 protein isoforms in stably transfected colonic LS174T cells and in transiently transfected HeLa cells using fluorescence microscopy. While a similar subcellular distribution at the trans-Golgi cisternae level was observed for the two isoforms, our study pointed to an atypical subcellular localization of the long B4GALNT2 isoform into dynamic vesicles. We demonstrated a critical role of its extended cytoplasmic tail for its Golgi targeting and post-Golgi sorting and highlighted the existence of a newly described post-Golgi sorting signal as well as a previously undescribed fate of a Golgi glycosyltransferase.DatabaseThe proteins 1,4GalNAcT II, 1,4-GalT1, FucT I, FucT VI and ST3Gal IV are noted B4GALNT2, B4GALT1, FUT1, FUT6 and ST3GAL4, whereas the corresponding human genes are noted B4GALNT2, B4GALT1, FUT1, FUT6 and ST3GAL4 according to the HUGO nomenclature.

The present study investigates the prospects for a large-scale implementation of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes in the Brazilian Pantanal wetland. Despite increasing environmental threats associated with development pressures and the growing interest of public and private organizations, no PES schemes are currently in place in the Pantanal. Through an exploratory scenario analysis, this article determines the prospects for PES in the area. The findings suggest that a large-scale implementation is unlikely, as this would require much higher levels of environmental awareness among local decision makers and low substitution rates of ecosystem services by technology. Furthermore, strong socioeconomic inequality between inhabitants of the Pantanal lowlands and wealthy farmers of the neighboring uplands means that potential suppliers of ecosystem services would face very high opportunity costs to participate in PES schemes. The research findings are also relevant to other environmentally sensitive regions experiencing rapid economic growth and weak environmental regulation.

Some scholars promote water governance as a normative concept to improve water resources management globally, while others conceive of it as an analytical term to describe the processes, systems and institutions around the management of water resources and water supply. Critics often highlight how specific water governance scenarios fail to deliver socially desirable outcomes, such as social justice or environmental sustainability. While water governance is often perceived as a technical matter, its conceptual and practical components are in fact based on multiple values that, nonetheless, often remain implicit. The present paper seeks to uncover this value base and discusses existing research on values from multiple perspectives, using material from economics, philosophy, psychology, and other social sciences. In different disciplines, values can be understood as fundamental guiding principles, governance-related values or as values assigned to water resources. Together, they shape complex relationships with water governance, which from an analytical perspective is understood as a combination of policy, politics, and polity. Introducing a new conceptual framework, this study seeks to provide a theoretical foundation for empirical research on water governance processes and conflicts.

While much effort has gone into studying the causes and consequences of water scarcity, the concept of water abundance has received considerably less attention in academic literature. Here, we aim to address this gap by providing a case study on the perceptions and political implications of water abundance in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. Combining a political ecology perspective on contemporary water governance (empirically based on stakeholder interviews with members of the state's water sector) with an overview of the environmental history of this hydrosocial territory, we argue, first, that water abundance has become a foundational element of Mato Grosso's identity, situated in the wider context of natural resource abundance more generally and second, that water abundance today is a contested concept witnessing discursive struggles around its political implications and meaning. More specifically, there is a clash between the dominant conceptualisation of water abundance as a foundation for rich economic, ecological, social, and cultural values and benefits, often espoused by members of the political and economic elite, e.g., for marketing purposes, and a more critical but less widespread conceptualisation of water abundance as a source of carelessness, lack of awareness, and poor water governance, typically put forth by more informed technical staff of the public sector and civil society activists. By providing a distinct treatment and discussion of the concept of water abundance, our research has relevance for other water-rich regions beyond the immediate regional context.

A feeding experiment was conducted to test the attractant potential of a processed protein concentrate of the blue mussel (BMPC) as replacer for fish meal (FM) protein in rapeseed protein concentrate (RPC)-based diets for turbot. Triplicate fish groups received isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets with a 50% or 75% replacement of FM protein by a RPC (RPC 50, RPC 75), and further FM protein substitution with 0, 2, 4 or 8% of BMPC. The application of RPC 50/0 provided no significant impact on fish performance compared to FM-reference diet, while daily feed intake (DFI), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion were significantly impaired when fish fed with RPC 75/0 (P 0.05). Protein efficiency ratio and protein productive values remained unaffected among all treatments (P>0.05). Excepting crude ash content, no changes in crude protein, crude lipid, dry matter and energy content were obtained. Hepatosomatic index tended to increased (P>0.05) in accordance with slightly hypertrophic hepatocytes of fish fed diets with a BMPC incorporation of 40-80 g kg-1. Neither inflammatory nor degenerative alterations were detected in the intestine. In summary, we demonstrated that BMPC failed to stimulate the feed intake of turbot when dietary FM protein was substituted consecutively, but it was found to maintain performance level of turbot within the test diet groups. This indicates nutritional properties of BMPC comparable to prime FM protein, functional to further reduce the FM protein content in aquafeeds for carnivorous fish.

Objective: Liposomal transfection in gene therapeutic application against gynecological malignoma does not reach satisfying efficacy. A desirable goal would be the specific intensification of transfection in these kind ofcells. Steroids have successfully been used in other systems to increase liposomal transfection and hopefully there might be a specific impact of sexual steroids in cells from high sex steroid receptor expressing malignoma, like some mamma- and endometrium cancer. Material and Methods: The mamma carcinoma cell line T-47D was transfected with the transfection agent DOTAP and cyclodextrin solubilized steroids and cholesterol were co-applied. The efficiency of transfection was followed by luciferase activity resulting from the transfected reporter gene. Results: Like cholesterol, which is already established as transfection co-agent, also the steroids progesterone, estrogen, testosterone and hydrocortisone provoked a clear increase in transfection efficiency shown in a dose dependent manner. Conclusions: These results indicate the usefulness of steroids as additives for liposomal transfection procedures in gene therapeutic application. As sexual steroid receptors migrate into the nucleus of a cell after binding its specific ligand a targeted enhancement of transfection is supposable in malignoma overex-pressing steroid receptors. There is evidence that plasmid DNA can be co-transported with nuclear proteins into the nucleus.

The German Environmental Survey (GerES) is a representative population study conducted in Germany since the mid-1980s. GerES IV is the first survey for children only; it will be conducted in close connection with the Health Survey for Children and Adolescents on a random sample of 1,800 children (3 to 14 years of age) taken from the study population of the Health Survey for Children and Adolescents. Various parameters will be analysed in blood, urine, house dust, indoor air and tap water. They include neurotoxins (PCBs, Pb, Hg), carcinogenic/cocarcinogenic substances (PAHs, benzene, halocarbons, Cd, As), substances that may cause irritation of the respiratory tract, allergies and asthma (VOC, formaldehyde, house dust mite, mould fungi, pet allergens) and substances that may have an effect on metabolism with potentially long-term consequences (such as DEHP). An additional part was devoted to the link between hearing ability, noise and stress. A one-year pilot study on 550 children and adolescents was conducted in 2001 to 2002 to collect information on parameters influencing the response rate and to test the suitability of the different instruments intended to be used for the main study.

Background and Study Aims: Endosonographic staging of esophageal carcinoma may be limited by non-traversable tumor stenoses. Dilation of malignant esophageal strictures carries a significant risk of esophageal perforation. We therefore evaluated the use of ultrasonic miniprobes in the staging of stenotic esophageal carcinoma compared with conventional endoscopic ultrasound. Patients and Methods: In a blinded, prospective study, which included histopathological evaluation, 53 consecutive patients (43 male, 10 female, mean age 61 years) with stenosing esophageal carcinomas were examined preoperatively. Endosonography was done using the optical GF-UM3 echo endoscope. If tumor strictures were not traversable with this instrument, a blind esophagoprobe, the MH-908 was used for endosonography. Miniprobe sonography (MPS) was done during esophagoscopy in all patients. The various imaging modalities were assessed in terms of complete tumor traversability and correct tumor staging. Every patient underwent surgical tumor resection. Results: MPS of the esophagus and proximal parts of the stomach was possible in all 53 patients without prior dilation of tumor stenoses. Endosonography with the GF-UM3 instrument was precluded in 23 patients (43.4%) while in 20 of the latter patients the MH 908 esophagoprobe could be passed through tumor stenoses. The overall accuracy rates for depth of tumor infiltration (T) staging were: 62 % (31/50) for endosonography (GF-UM3 plus esophagoprobe) and 86.8% (46/53) for MPS. The accuracy rates for T staging in tumors traversable both with the GF-UM3 echo endoscope and with miniprobes were 56.7% (17/30) for GF-UM3 and 80% (24/30) for MPS. The accuracy rates for T staging in tumors traversable only with the MH-908 esophagoprobe and with miniprobes were 70% (14/20) for the MH-908 and 95% (19/20) for MPS. With regard to the presence or absence of peri-esophageal metastatic lymph nodes (N staging), the accuracy rates were 83% (25/30) for MPS and 70% (21/30) for the GF-UM3, and 80 % (16/20) for MPS and 70 % (14/20) for the MH-908. Conclusion: Compared with conventional endosonography using 7.5-MHz large diameter instruments, MPS enables: a) safe passage through high-grade malignant esophageal strictures, achieving b) higher accuracy rates for T staging, and c) similar rates for N staging. The use of MPS can also represent an improvement in the comfort and safety of patients. Moreover, miniprobe sonography is highly cost-effective compared with conventional endosonography. Thus, MPS appears to be a valuable addition to the armamentarium for staging esophageal carcinoma.

Crouzon syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)-2 gene. Recent findings from animal studies imply a critical role for FGFs in the regulation of cardiac development including cardiac cushion proliferation and valvulogenesis. We report on a 36-year-old woman, who required surgical closure for an atrial septal defect, a clinical feature that has not been previously reported in other patients with Crouzon syndrome. The findings suggest that cardiac investigations are warranted in patients with a diagnosis of Crouzon syndrome.

Using a unique two-arm detector system for heavy ions (the BRS, binary reaction spectrometer) coincident fission events have been measured from the decay of $^{60}$Zn compound nuclei formed at 88MeV excitation energy in the reactions with $^{36}$Ar beams on a $^{24}$Mg target at $E_{lab}(^{36}$Ar) = 195 MeV. The detectors consisted of two large area position sensitive (x,y) gas telescopes with Bragg-ionization chambers. From the binary coincidences in the two detectors inclusive and exclusive cross sections for fission channels with differing losses of charge were obtained. Narrow out-of-plane correlations corresponding to coplanar decay are observed for two fragments emitted in binary events, and in the data for ternary decay with missing charges from 4 up to 8. After subtraction of broad components these narrow correlations are interpreted as a ternary fission process at high angular momentum through an elongated shape. The lighter mass in the neck region consists dominantly of two or three-particles. Differential cross sections for the different mass splits for binary and ternary fission are presented. The relative yields of the binary and ternary events are explained using the statistical model based on the extended Hauser-Feshbach formalism for compound nucleus decay. The Fe vibrational density of states (VDOS) has been determined for the heme proteins deoxymyoglobin, metmyoglobin, and cytochrome f in the oxidized and reduced states, using nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS). For cytochrome f in particular, the NRVS spectrum is compared with multiwavelength resonance Raman spectra to identify those Raman modes with significant Fe displacement. Modes not seen by Raman due to optical selection rules appear in the NRVS spectrum. The mean Fe force constant extracted from the VDOS illustrates how Fe dynamics varies among these four monoheme proteins, and is correlated with oxidation and spin state trends seen in model heme compounds. The protein's contribution to Fe motion is dominant at low frequencies, where coupling to the backbone tightly constrains Fe displacements in cytochrome f, in contrast to enhanced heme flexibility in myoglobin.

The dynamics of vibrational wave packets excited in K$_2$ dimers attached to superfluid helium nanodroplets is investigated by means of femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The employed resonant three-photon-ionization scheme is studied in a wide wavelength range and different pathways leading to K$^+_2$-formation are identified. While the wave packet dynamics of the electronic ground state is not influenced by the helium environment, perturbations of the electronically excited states are observed. The latter reveal a strong time dependence on the timescale 3-8 ps which directly reflects the dynamics of desorption of K$_2$ off the helium droplets.

Multidirectional communicative interactions in social networks can have a profound effect on mate choice behavior. Male Atlantic molly Poecilia mexicana exhibit weaker mating preferences when an audience male is presented. This could be a male strategy to reduce sperm competition risk: interacting more equally with different females may be advantageous because rivals might copy mate choice decisions. In line with this hypothesis, a previous study found males to show a strong audience effect when being observed while exercising mate choice, but not when the rival was presented only before the choice tests. Audience effects on mate choice decisions have been quantified in poeciliid fishes using association preference designs, but it remains unknown if patterns found from measuring association times translate into actual mating behavior. Thus, we created five audience treatments simulating different forms of perceived sperm competition risk and determined focal males' mating preferences by scoring pre-mating (nipping) and mating behavior (gonopodial thrusting). Nipping did not reflect the pattern that was found when association preferences were measured, while a very similar pattern was uncovered in thrusting behavior. The strongest response was observed when the audience could eavesdrop on the focal male's behavior. A reduction in the strength of focal males' preferences was also seen after the rival male had an opportunity to mate with the focal male's preferred mate. In comparison, the reduction of mating preferences in response to an audience was greater when measuring association times than actual mating behavior. While measuring direct sexual interactions between the focal male and both stimulus females not only the male's motivational state is reflected but also females' behavior such as avoidance of male sexual harassment.

Tropical peatlands play an important role in the global carbon cycle by acting as significant carbon stores. South America's largest peatland complex is located in the Loreto Region of the Peruvian Amazon. Here we present the first study of human relations with these peatlands, including their uses, cultural significance and current management, as well as implications for conservation, based on qualitative research with people living in two riverine rural communities. Our results indicate that peatlands are culturally ambiguous spaces, used mainly for hunting, palm fruit harvesting, and timber, but feared due to the dangers of getting lost, sinking into the ‘sucking’ ground, and being attacked by anacondas and/or mythical creatures. While the difficult terrain and remoteness of peatlands have thus far acted as natural barriers to their destruction through conversion to different land uses, overuse of natural resources is nevertheless a significant concern for people living in the peat-dominated landscape of the Peruvian Amazon, mixed with frustration about the lack of outside support to foster environmental conservation and economic opportunities. We explore how evaluations of the present situation differ across one indigenous and one mestizo community. We identify a range of nascent peatland conservation strategies, including seedling planting to regrow valuable (palm) trees, and the climbing of palm trees for harvesting fruit as opposed to felling them. We argue that peatland conservation could be combined with the development of sustainable management strategies, but that this would require sustained engagement by outside organisations with rapidly growing local communities in these areas. Funder: Hydro Nation Scholars Programme, Large numbers of dams for hydroelectric power production are currently planned or under construction in many areas around the world. While positive and negative social and environmental impacts of dams are increasingly well understood, little is known about attitudes of the general public towards dams, even though benefits to wider society are often cited to legitimise their construction. In Brazil’s Upper Paraguay River Basin, more than 100 mostly small-scale hydropower dams are planned or under construction in what can be considered a regional dam construction boom. Here we analyse public preferences for strategies to manage dam impacts in the area by investigating the value base that underpins such preferences, drawing on the recently proposed Value Landscapes Approach as our theoretical framework and data from a large representative household survey (N = 1067). We find that contrasting attitudes towards dams, expressed in preferences for economically or ecologically oriented water policies are informed by opposing underlying value landscapes, that is, groups of closely related fundamental, governance-related, and assigned (water) values. While such tensions between opposing values can never be fully eliminated, our research nevertheless gives insights to policy-makers seeking to minimise value conflict and to improve the political legitimacy of public decision-making on dam construction. Moreover, we find that a majority of members of the general public would prefer concentrating dam construction on some rivers while keeping others free-flowing, with direct implications for ecosystems and inland fisheries. This finding may guide policy-makers wishing to develop publicly supported water resources management strategies.

The World Commission on Dams (WCD) was a global environmental governance forum that worked between 1998 and 2000 to try to resolve long-standing controversies between supporters and opponents of large dams. Its objectives were to assess the development effectiveness of large dams and to develop best practice guidelines for large dam construction and management, based on an extensive review of scientific evidence and wide-ranging stakeholder consultation. This paper reviews literature discussing the WCD, to understand its influence on the debate on large dams and beyond. We find that its influence is debated within four main contexts: (i) interpretations of stakeholder responses to the WCD report and recommendations; (ii) the persistence of the kinds of impacts of large dams that gave rise to the Commission’s work; (iii) the different visions for appropriate follow-up strategies; (iv) insights from the WCD experience in the context of global environmental governance. Within these four contexts, we identify diverse opinions and directions of post-WCD development and sources of disagreement on its merits and legacy, ranging from calls for its full implementation to dismissal and opposition. Commentators also differ in their assessment of whether the WCD sparked truly novel insights and propositions for dam decision-making or whether it simply represented one among many other elements in the broader debate on dams. Most commonly, the WCD’s work is cited in the context of persistent negative social and environmental impacts of dams: neither the impacts nor the controversy over large dams have ended.
