This chapter proposes to mobilize translation as an exploratory tool to investigate and transform both a specific site (namely, a golf course located in the immediate suburbs of Dakar, in the forests and wetlands called Niayes) and the authors’ very practice while writing this text. ‘We’ in the chapter does not stand for an abstracted ‘I’ but for two de-authorized partners/authors, convinced that no communication is transparent—and ‘knowledge transfer’ even less so. The aim of the chapter can be called ‘counter-mapping’, which consists in a spatio-temporal and relational experience: starting from what already exists in terms of uses in a space and intensifying the sense of the possible in the present time. The first step consists of considering the Niayes as paradoxical space and the translation as filter. Then the project dives into the complex stratification of colonial time and textual layers and, finally, observes a movie in its making. This journey will progressively lead to establishing any ‘other’ dimension right here, and translating, a re-opening of actual possibilities.
