Microplastic fibers have been found to be a dominant form of microplastics in water matrixes, and textile industry and domestic washing of synthetic textiles as one of its main sources. Additionally, there is a lack of knowlidge about microplastic fiber release during mechanically drying clothes and textiles due to differences in the isolation of microplastic fiber methods. Limited information available in the literature in terms of the isolation of microplastic fibers from organic-rich samples after using different household equipment represents one of the main challenges leading us to our main goal, to optimise an effective, simple, and low-cost method for the isolation of microplastic fibers from textile fibers of different origins without damaging their structure. This is achieved by primarily removing mineral matter by using density separation with a saturated solution of ZnCl2 followed by removal of organic matter by using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and FeCl3 as a catalyst. Identification of microplastic fibers was obtained by optical microscope, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric analysis. Clear microscope (both optical and SEM) images, high percentage of obtained FTIR spectra overlap with Polymer Sample laboratory, clear TGA of isolated samples confirmed that this method can be used as a simple and effective method for isolation of microplastic fibers from organic components rich samples of different origin. published

Objective: To investigate women's perspectives on the quality of maternal and new-born care (QMNC) around the time of childbirth during the COVID-19 pandemic in Latvia, comparing the years 2020 and 2021, among women who went into labor or had a prelabor cesarean. Methods: Women giving birth in healthcare facilities in Latvia from March 1, 2020, to October 28, 2021, answered an online questionnaire including 40 WHO standards- based quality measures. Descriptive and multivariate quantile regression analyses were performed to compare QMNC in 2020 and 2021. Results: 2079 women were included in the analysis: 1860 women who went into labor (group 1) and 219 with prelabor cesarean (group 2). Among group 1, 66.4% (n = 99/149) of women received fundal pressure in an instrumental vaginal birth, 43.5% (n = 810) lacked involvement in choices, 17.4% (n = 317) reported suffering abuse, 32.7% (n = 609) reported inadequate breastfeeding support while 5.2% (n = 96) lack of early breastfeeding. A significant reduction in QMNC due to the COVID-19 pandemic was reported by 29.5% (n = 219) and 25.0% (n = 270) of respondents in 2020 and 2021, respectively (P = 0.045). Multivariate analyses highlighted a signifi-cantly lower QMNC index for 2020 compared with 2021 (P < 0.001).Conclusion: This first study investigating QMNC in Latvia showed significant gaps in QMNC perceived by respondents, with slightly better results in 2021. Appropriate health-care strategies to improve health care for women and newborns in Latvia are required.

microplastics ,ecotoxicity ,Agricultural biofilms ,stress biomarkers - Abstract
Every year, new biobased biodegradable plastics are released into the market, but little is understood about the risks these materials may pose to various ecosystems, especially freshwaters where they appear to remain longer. In this study, chironomid Chironomus riparius (in the 4th larval stage), was used as a model species to address the potential short-term ecotoxicity of microplastics (bio-MPs) derived from a commercially available biobased biodegradable agricultural mulch film, under ecologically relevant scenarios (field concentration and UV-aging). The results demonstrate that after 48 hours of exposure, C. riparius larvae presented bio-MPs, UV-aged or not, in their gut, which content increased with increased concentrations (with a range of 1 to 2 particles per organism). The presence and ingestion of bio-MPs also resulted in variations in aerobic metabolism (via electron transfer system activity) and the activation of antioxidant defenses (catalase and glutathione-S-transferase) and neurotransmission (acetylcholinesterase). Such modifications did not result in oxidative damage, suggesting that this organism might counteract oxidative stress induced by the tested biobased biodegradable polymer (whether it is pristine or UV-aged). Other antioxidant defenses must be addressed, for a deeper knowledge of the possible physiological and biochemical effects of bio-MPs on this model species. Future research must take a life cycle assessment into account to link these responses to the possible impacts at higher levels of biological organization (such as larval growth and imagoes emergence). microplastics ,polyurethane ,regeneration ,behaviour ,freshwater ecosystem - Abstract
Microplastics (size ¡ 5 mm) represent a global threat to freshwaters, as they are among the major sinks of these contaminants sourced on inland anthropogenic activities. The number of studies in these environments remains scarce compared to marine environments, and little is known about the potential trophic transfer and the consequent effects on freshwater predators, particularly those with extracorporeal digestion. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the behavioural and physiological responses of the planarian Girardia tigrina after consuming contaminated prey - Chironomus riparius 4th instar larvae previously exposed to microplastics of Polyurethane (PU-MPs; 7-9 μm in size; polymer applied in building & construction and transportation sectors). Firstly, larvae (¡ 48 h) were exposed to 0 (control condition) and 375 mg PU-MPs/kg for 10 days (a concentration that did not affect larvae growth, despite the hyperactivity observed in contaminated prey). After 10 days, larvae (n=15) from PU-MP and control conditions were collected, rinsed, and fed to planarians for (3h). After the feeding period, planarians' locomotion and regeneration were evaluated. Planarians consumed 20% more contaminated prey than uncontaminated prey, probably related to larvae' higher locomotion behaviour (also more appellative to the predator). After feeding activity, no significant changes in planarians' locomotion were observed, but a slight delay in the regeneration of the auricula (up to 1.5 days) was recorded for planarians that fed on contaminated prey. Histological analysis revealed the planarians' uptake of a limited number of PU-MPs. Although results reveal sub-lethal effects on planarians after consuming contaminated prey with PU-MPs, it does not rule out eventual long-term effects (i.e., reproduction/fitness). Penicillium brevicompactum ,Eisenia andrei ,Biofilms ,Plastics biodegradation ,Soil ecotoxicology - Abstract
Biobased and biodegradable plastic mulch films are an increasingly attractive alternative to their conventional counterparts, with the promise of safeguarding the health of agricultural soils and their inhabitants through the complete biodegradation of the material (and consequent elimination of removal costs) contributing to the value of these mostly petrochemical-independent materials. However, these plastics' current certification processes prove themselves lacklustre in predicting biodegradation performance and ecotoxicological effects in natural settings, the relatively few studies done on the topic disputing this perceived environmental-friendliness. This study assessed the biodegradation of a commercially-available biobased and biodegradable mulch film by the soil-dwelling fungal species Penicillium brevicompactum, in solid culture media and locally sourced agricultural soil, for the duration of 15 and 28 days, as well as the ecotoxicological effects of microplastics from the same material on the key earthworm species Eisenia andrei, at environmentally-relevant concentrations ranging from 0.125 to 0.500 grams per kilogram of soil, both in their pristine state and after UV-C radiation weathering. The results obtained in the biodegradation assays – mass variation, microscopic analysis and FTIR analysis – suggest P. brevicompactum's capability to accelerate the mulch film's natural biodegradation process. In the ecotoxicological assays, exposure to any concentration of pristine microplastics seemed to increase E. andrei's sensitivity to touch, had apparent adverse effects on energy reserves, and resulted in significant decreases in offspring numbers (upwards of 30%); conversely, weathered microplastics seemed to show no such negative effects, bar specimen sensitivity. Since the mulch film's weathering is expected to happen if properly used, the studied material seems to be an environmentally-friendly alternative, given its potential for faster biodegradation by normal soil dwellers and low toxicity to a key-species in the ecosystem. Notwithstanding, these findings highlight the shortcomings of currently applied standards, that can ignore the role of chronic ecotoxicological effects on naturally-occurring organisms. The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) on seafood has sparked scientific and popular concern since it may endanger human health. Clams are particularly dangerous for human exposure since they are swallowed whole. The purpose of this study was to create a simple methodology for extracting MPs from a widely exploited clam, Ruditapes decussatus, such that they could be detected using the fluorescent dye Nile Red (NR) and subsequently characterized with micro-Raman spectroscopy. Several digestion procedures (e.g., Fenton, alkalis, bleach, among others) were tested in fresh or lyophilized (further crushed) biological samples. The alkalis digestion with 10% KOH for 24 hours followed by an oxidizing agent (10% H2O2) for 24 hours and extraction with ZnCl2 (1.6 kg/L) on lyophilized (pulverized) samples was the best approach for tissue digestion. The use of this approach indicated a high digesting efficacy with increased weight loss of biological tissues, reduced filtering time consumption, reduced interference of leftover organic matter with Nile Red staining and provided high-quality pictures for the quantification of suspected MPs. Using NR for detecting MPs, such particles might be spotted and characterized more readily when using micro-Raman spectroscopy.

PurposeToday, male and female adult and pediatric cancer patients, individuals transitioning between gender identities, and other individuals facing health extending but fertility limiting treatments can look forward to a fertile future. This is, in part, due to the work of members associated with the Oncofertility Consortium.MethodsThe Oncofertility Consortium is an international, interdisciplinary initiative originally designed to explore the urgent unmet need associated with the reproductive future of cancer survivors. As the strategies for fertility management were invented, developed or applied, the individuals for who the program offered hope, similarly expanded. As a community of practice, Consortium participants share information in an open and rapid manner to addresses the complex health care and quality-of-life issues of cancer, transgender and other patients. To ensure that the organization remains contemporary to the needs of the community, the field designed a fully inclusive mechanism for strategic planning and here present the findings of this process.ResultsThis interprofessional network of medical specialists, scientists, and scholars in the law, medical ethics, religious studies and other disciplines associated with human interventions, explore the relationships between health, disease, survivorship, treatment, gender and reproductive longevity.ConclusionThe goals are to continually integrate the best science in the service of the needs of patients and build a community of care that is ready for the challenges of the field in the future.

This Article is distributed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License., Objectives: Positive Youth Development - PYD perspective has highlighted the need to strengthen internal/external developmental assets in youth’s contexts. Literature suggests the importance for several psychosocial variables for the improvement of positive outcomes in youths, crucial for later in adulthood. The present study examined the associations of PYD and its dimensions with psychosocial variables. Methods: Through an online survey, 2700 Portuguese youths (73.3% females), with a mean age of 21.3±2.79 years old were included. Results: The results showed that, generally, there is a tendency for psychosocial variables, such as Resilience, Selfregulation, Anxiety, Perceived School Performance, Goals and Aspirations, and Life Events Scale, to have a significant impact on PYD Total score and its five dimensions: Confidence, Competence, Connection, Caring and Character (with exceptions in specific sub-dimension of scales). Conclusion: Such findings reinforce the relevance of studying positive indicators for youth development and draws addition to potential protective factors, such as the dynamic interdependence between psychosocial variables. More knowledge in this area can help health/education professionals and policy-makers to better plan interventions/policies, aiming an integral healthy perspective for youths, based on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work. Thus, different contexts are suggested to be taken into account and services would benefit from reinforcements in the environments where youths spend their time, namely family, school and community settings., The research leading to this publication was co-funded by different partial supports such as the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (Grants - Margarida Gaspar de Matos: SFRH/ BSAB/135160/2017; Marta Reis: SFRH/BPD/110905/2015; Teresa Santos: SFRH/BD/82066/2011/J51280474607), WJCR/ISPA, Instituto Universitário; ISAMB, FML/University of Lisbon; FMH/ University of Lisbon. Six representative edible seaweeds from the Central West Portuguese Coast, including the less studied Osmundea pinnatifida, were harvested from Buarcos bay, Portugal and their chemical characterization determined. Protein content, total sugar and fat contents ranged between 14.4% and 23.8%, 32.4% and 49.3% and 0.6-3.6%. Highest total phenolic content was observed in Codium tomentosum followed by Sargassum muticum and O. pinnatifida. Fatty acid (FA) composition covered the branched chain C13ai to C22:5 n3 with variable content in n6 and n3 FA; low n6:n3 ratios were observed in O. pinnatifida, Grateloupia turuturu and C. tomentosum. Some seaweed species may be seen as good sources of Ca, K, Mg and Fe, corroborating their good nutritional value. According to FTIR-ATR spectra, G. turuturu was associated with carrageenan seaweed producers whereas Gracilaria gracilis and O. pinnatifida were mostly agar producers. In the brown algae, S. muticum and Saccorhiza polyschides, alginates and fucoidans were the main polysaccharides found.

barriers to rights ,EU citizenship ,Cross-task anaylsis - Abstract
As noted in the official ‘Description of Work’ in the original proposal for establishing the bEUcitizen project, the objective of Work Package 7 is to study, from the perspective of European Union citizenship, specific problems individuals face in exercising their civil rights and liberties in areas which fall within, but also in areas that lie beyond the scope of EU law. In the legal EU context, fundamental rights, including civil rights, have recently not only gained visibility, but also acquired an increasing significance. This is particularly so since the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon (2009), which turned the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights into a legally binding document. However, well before the Treaty of Lisbon, the civil rights of EU citizens, in particular those of free movement and non-discrimination, had already gained legal recognition in EU law through the case law of the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The civil rights that have been studied in WP7 concern the set of rights necessary for the exercise of individual freedoms, whose exercise encounters significant legal, practical or policy difficulties. These include inter alia the right to free movement and the right to equal treatment (non-discrimination), the right to family life, the freedom of expression, the right to privacy, the freedom of religion, the right to property, the right to an effective judicial remedy and the protection against loss of citizenship. The right to gain access to travel documents, essential to the freedom of movement and of residence, was included as well. The foregoing were studied from the perspective of EU citizens, but also from that of third-country nationals, who enjoy certain rights on the basis of EU law (either derived rights as family member of EU citizens or under EU legislation concerning third-country nationals). The scope of civil rights EU citizens enjoy on the basis of EU law is limited, as they can only be invoked against EU institutions and against Member States when implementing EU law (which should seemingly be understood as all situations that fall within the scope of EU law). A nagging uncertainty persists however as to when EU civil rights can be relied upon to challenge domestic restrictive measures or practices. Moreover, the scope of the residence rights that come with EU citizenship has traditionally been limited to transnational situations. The latter has produced unpalatable differences in the protection afforded by EU citizenship and the EU ‘Bill of Rights’ to mobile EU citizens who exercised their rights of free movement on the one hand, and to ‘sedentary’ EU citizens who have not on the other. Some case law of the ECJ suggests that there is a core body of citizenship rights which may be enjoyed without having to prove a transnational dimension, but the contours have remained unclear, and so far a further elaboration has not been forthcoming.

The main aim of this work was the development of new chemical optical fibre (OF) sensors for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial environments. The detection component of the developed sensors consisted on a small section of an optical fibre coated with a polymeric film. The polymeric film morphology was analysed and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the thickness of the film determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). The analytical performance of the OF sensors was evaluated regarding some operational parameters, such as, concentration of the coating solution, deposition technique of the polymeric film, temperature of the injection cell, temperature of cure of the polymeric film, working wavelength and frequency of the laser, design of the injection cell and analytical tube, and flow rate of the carrier gas. Two OF sensors operating in the infrared spectral region were developed for determination of different classes of VOCs, namely aromatic, chlorinated and aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. The developed sensors showed high analytical sensitivity, linearity, repeatability, reproducibility of the analytical signal and a response time of about 30 seconds. An OF sensor was developed for benzene, toluene and o-xylene speciation operating in the visible region (635 - 650 nm) and applied to the analysis of actual samples of air from a solvent industry. Regarding VOCs monitoring in industrial environments, an OF sensor was developed for in situ and remotely monitoring (at a maximum of 60 metres away from the sampling place) of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, mxylene and o-xylene (BTEX) using a laser diode at 1550 nm. The analytical performance of the developed sensor was comparable to the determination of BTEX by gas chromatography - flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Two analytical methods were also developed for speciation of alcohols and aromatic hydrocarbons. The developed methods were based on separation by gas chromatography and detection by an optical fibre detector (GC-OF) and they were applied to the analysis of actual air samples from a solvent industry. Their results were tested and compared to those obtained by GC-FID. Finally, a general model was proposed for describing the analytical response of the developed optical fibre sensors.

Estrogen regulate follicular growth and oocytes maturation hence their receptors are very important elements in ovarian function and, consequently, in ovulation. The estrogen receptor alpha (ER α) is encoded by ESR1 gene. Many polymorphisms have been identified in the ESR1 gene may account for differences in reproductive efficiency. Pvu II and Xba I polymorphisms frequently appear associated with different ovarian response in patients undergoing ovarian stimulation for fertility treatments. This study aims to associate Pvu II and Xba I polymorphisms to ovarian response in patients undergoing ovarain stimulation for assisted reproductive techniques (ART) in the Department of Human Reproduction of University Hospitals of Coimbra. We analyzed two groups: the sample, 93 women diagnosed with infertility, and controls, 12 healthy women whose sexual partner is sterile. Both women groups were subjected to protocols of ovulation stimulation. For DNA extraction was used QIAamp ® DNA Blood MiniKit with some changes in the QIAGEN protocol. The Pvu II polymorphism (-397 T> C) and Xba I (-351 A> G) were analyzed by using the polymerase chain reaction and analysis by restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) according to Yaich et al (1992). Pvu II polymorphism showed to be associated with some of ovarian response to stimulation parameters. The C allele confers a predisposition to produce a high follicle number mean and seems to be associated with increased of estradiol production. However, we could not infer anything about the Xba I polymorphism. Likewise, we could not confirm the association between the different causes of infertility and genetic variability of polymorphisms Pvu II and Xba I. However, the genotypes that include the Xba I A allele (GA and AA) show a trend of association with first infertility and the allele Xba I G with secondary infertility.
