1. Optimizing warehouse operations for environmental sustainability: A simulation study for reducing carbon emissions and maximizing space utilization

Abstract

Loading and unloading operations for Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) in warehouses are critical to logistics management systems. However, these operations also have a significant impact on the environment, particularly in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. As such, warehouse management must consider not only operational efficiency but also environmental impact. The reduction of CO2 emissions in warehouses is becoming increasingly important, both for legal compliance and to meet sustainability targets. In this article, we will emphasize the environmental impact of warehouse operations, particularly on CO2 emissions, and explore ways to minimize them while still maximizing warehouse performance. We will review various optimization models proposed to address this issue and highlight the importance of considering environmental objectives when designing warehouse operations. We will also describe a simulation study conducted to determine the Pareto optimal frontier for a warehouse design, considering transportation, space utilization, and CO2 emissions. The outcomes of implementing this simulation's results include reduced CO2 emissions and increased space utilization, which demonstrate the potential benefits of considering environmental objectives in warehouse design and management.

4. Chemical composition, anti-fungal and cytotoxic effects of Ferula macrecolea essential oil against Candida albicans resistant and sensitive strains

Abstract

Introduction: Candidiasis therapy is a complicated concern because of the occurrence of resistance to antifungal agents. We studied the anti-fungal effects of Ferula macrecolea essential oil (FME) against Candida albicans resistant and sensitive strains, as well as its cytotoxic effects against normal and cancer cell lines. Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of F. macrecolea essential oil against C. albicans ATCC 5027 and C. albicans ATCC 76616 were studied by broth-microdilution approach. The cytotoxicities of FME on HGF1-PI (normal gingival cell line) and HepG2 (liver cancer cell line) cells were also studied. Results: The main components of essential oil were terpinolene (71.25%), n-nonanal (6.32%), and linalool (3.95%), respectively. The MIC and MFC of FME on C. albicans sensitive to nystatin were 1.6 and 2.0 μg/mL, respectively. The MIC and MFC of FME on nystatin-resistant strains were 3.3 and 4 μg/mL, respectively. The MIC and MFC of terpinolene on C. albicans sensitive to nystatin were 0.8 and 1.0 μg/mL, respectively. The MIC and MFC of terpinolene on nystatin-resistant strains were 2 and 2.4 μg/mL, respectively. The essential oil and terpinolene had no significant cytotoxic effects against normal cells. Conclusion: We revealed the promising antifungal effect of F. macrecolea essential oil and its main component, terpinolene, against C. albicans sensitive and resistant to nystatin with no significant toxicity on normal cells.

Abstract

Background: Updated data on chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are vital in their prevention, control, and treatment in the path to achieving the third UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a one-third reduction in premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 2030. We provided global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of CRDs and their attributable risks from 1990 to 2019.Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, we estimated mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), prevalence, and incidence of CRDs, i.e. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pneumoconiosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis, and other CRDs, from 1990 to 2019 by sex, age, region, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI) in 204 countries and territories. Deaths and DALYs from CRDs attributable to each risk factor were estimated according to relative risks, risk exposure, and the theoretical minimum risk exposure level input. Findings: In 2019, CRDs were the third leading cause of death responsible for 4.0 million deaths (95% uncertainty interval 3.6–4.3) with a prevalence of 454.6 million cases (417.4–499.1) globally. While the total deaths and prevalence of CRDs have increased by 28.5% and 39.8%, the age-standardised rates have dropped by 41.7% and 16.9% from 1990 to 2019, respectively. COPD, with 212.3 million (200.4–225.1) prevalent cases, was the primary cause of deaths from CRDs, accounting for 3.3 million (2.9–3.6) deaths. With 262.4 million (224.1–309.5) prevalent cases, asthma had the highest prevalence among CRDs. The age-standardised rates of all burden measures of COPD, asthma, and pneumoconiosis have reduced globally from 1990 to 2019. Nevertheless, the age-standardised rates of incidence and prevalence of interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis have increased throughout this period. Low- and low-middle SDI countries had the highest age-standardised death and DALYs rates while the high SDI quintile had the highest prevalence rate of CRDs. The highest deaths and DALYs from CRDs were attributed to smoking globally, followed by air pollution and occupational risks. Non-optimal temperature and high body-mass index were additional risk factors for COPD and asthma, respectively.Interpretation: Albeit the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALYs rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The high death and DALYs rates in low and low-middle SDI countries highlights the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures. Global strategies for tobacco control, enhancing air quality, reducing occupational hazards, and fostering clean cooking fuels are crucial steps in reducing the burden of CRDs, especially in low- and lower-middle income countries. 7. Protective Effect of Artemisia absinthium Extract Against Glutamate- Induced Toxicity in PC12 Cells

Abstract

Objectives: Glutamatergic dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous central nervous system disorders. Artemisia absinthium (A. absinthium), has been reported to have neuroprotective and antioxidant activities. The current study examined the effect of A. absinthium extract on glutamate-induced cytotoxicity using PC12 cells. Methods: PC12 cells were pretreated with A. absinthium extract (70% ethanol) at concentration ranges of 6.25-25 µg/ml for 2 h, followed by exposure to glutamate (8 mM) for 24 hr. The cells viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and lipid peroxidation were measured. Moreover, a propidium iodide flow cytometry assay was performed for the assessment of apoptosis. Results: Pretreatment with A. absinthium extract markedly attenuated the loss of cell viability, ROS gen-eration, lipid peroxidation, and cell apoptosis in glutamate-injured PC-12 cells. Conclusion: Our results indicate that A. absinthium extract protects PC12 cells against glutamate-induced injury, possibly by reducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Abstract

Abstract: The effects of a sufficient amount of vitamins and nutrients on the proper function of the nervous system have always been regarded by scientists. In recent years, many studies have been done on controlling or improving the symptoms of neurological and behavioral disorders created by changes in the level of vitamins and other nutrition, such as omega-3 and iron supplements. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that disrupts individual communication, especially in social interactions. Its symptoms include anxiety, violence, depression, self-injury, trouble with social contact and pervasive, stereotyped, and repetitive behavior. ASD is most noticeable in early childhood. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a lasting pattern of inattention with or without hyperactivity that causes functional disruption in daily life. ADHD symptoms included; impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention, restlessness, talkativeness, excessive fidgeting in situations such as sitting, meetings, lectures, or at the movies, boredom, inability to make decisions, and procrastination. The exact etiology of ADHD has not yet been found, but several observations have assumed the reduced function of the brain leads to deficits in motor planning and cognitive processing. It has been shown that Pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress biomarkers could be increased in both ASD and ADHD. Several studies have been done to illustrate if vitamins and other dietary supplements are effective in treating and preventing ASD and ADHD. In this review, we aim to evaluate the effects of vitamins and other dietary supplements (e.g., melatonin, zinc supplements, magnesium supplements) on ASD and ADHD.

BackgroundReinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) is proposed as a neurobiological system that eventually led to emotion and motivation-based constructs of personality. Traditionally segmented into the behavioral activation system (BAS) and the behavioral inhibition system (BIS), RST is commonly used to describe personality and behavior. Although there have been studies linking gray matter alterations with BIS/BAS subscales, the role of white matter (WM) integrity is yet controversial. We aimed to investigate the specific WM tracts associated with BIS/BAS scores.Methods224 healthy participants (mean age=39.14 ± 20.23, 80 (35.7%) females) were evaluated using the BIS/BAS questionnaire from the LEMON database. Diffusion MRI connectometry (dMRI) was used to investigate the WM correlates of BIS/BAS subscales. Multiple regression models with the covariates of age and gender were fitted to address the correlation of local connectomes with BIS/BAS components.ResultsdMRI connectometry revealed that the QA value of the splenium of the corpus callosum, right cerebellum, middle cerebellar peduncle, and superior cerebellar peduncle, had a significant negative correlation with ‌each BIS/BAS subscale. In contrast, the QA value in the body of the corpus callosum, left cingulum, and right cingulum showed a positive correlation with BIS/BAS subscales.ConclusionThe integrity of WM in certain tracts may contribute to behavioral activation and inhibition. This finding expands the findings on the neural networks associated with risk-taking and reward-seeking behaviors.

Abstract

Background: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Given the recent increasing trends in colorectal cancer incidence globally, up-to-date information on the colorectal cancer burden could guide screening, early detection, and treatment strategies, and help effectively allocate resources. We examined the temporal patterns of the global, regional, and national burden of colorectal cancer and its risk factors in 204 countries and territories across the past three decades. Methods: Estimates of incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for colorectal cancer were generated as a part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 by age, sex, and geographical location for the period 1990-2019. Mortality estimates were produced using the cause of death ensemble model. We also calculated DALYs attributable to risk factors that had evidence of causation with colorectal cancer. Findings: Globally, between 1990 and 2019, colorectal cancer incident cases more than doubled, from 842 098 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 810 408-868 574) to 2·17 million (2·00-2·34), and deaths increased from 518 126 (493 682-537 877) to 1·09 million (1·02-1·15). The global age-standardised incidence rate increased from 22·2 (95% UI 21·3-23·0) per 100 000 to 26·7 (24·6-28·9) per 100 000, whereas the age-standardised mortality rate decreased from 14·3 (13·5-14·9) per 100 000 to 13·7 (12·6-14·5) per 100 000 and the age-standardised DALY rate decreased from 308·5 (294·7-320·7) per 100 000 to 295·5 (275·2-313·0) per 100 000 from 1990 through 2019. Taiwan (province of China; 62·0 [48·9-80·0] per 100 000), Monaco (60·7 [48·5-73·6] per 100 000), and Andorra (56·6 [42·8-71·9] per 100 000) had the highest age-standardised incidence rates, while Greenland (31·4 [26·0-37·1] per 100 000), Brunei (30·3 [26·6-34·1] per 100 000), and Hungary (28·6 [23·6-34·0] per 100 000) had the highest age-standardised mortality rates. 21. Association of meal-specific protein intake and cardiometabolic risk factors: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

We aimed to investigate the association of main meals' specific protein intake with cardiometabolic risk factors including general and abdominal obesity, serum lipid profile, and blood pressure. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 850 subjects aged 20–59 years. Dietary intakes were assessed by completing three 24-hour recalls and the protein intake of each meal was extracted. Anthropometric measures, lipid profile, fasting blood sugar, and blood pressure was measured. Multivariate logistic regression controlling for age, physical activity, sex, marital status, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), and energy intake was applied to obtain odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (CIs). The mean age was 42 years and the mean BMI of the participants was 27.2. The mean protein intake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was 12.5, 22.2, and 18.7 grams/day, respectively. After adjustment for confounders, higher protein intake was not associated with any of the cardiometabolic risk factors including low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), body weight, blood pressure (BP), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), in any of the three main meals consumed within a day. Adherence to a higher protein intake at each meal was not associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in Iranian adults. Further prospective studies are needed to justify our findings.

22. Pathophysiological and Clinical Aspects of Hearing Loss Among 85-Year-Olds

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of conductive/mixed and sensorineural hearing loss, with an attempt to differentiate between sensory and neural components in 85-year-olds. Method: A comprehensive auditory test protocol, including pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, auditory brainstem response (ABR), and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), was used to identify different types of hearing loss in 85-year-olds. This study comprised a subsample ( n = 125) selected from an unscreened cohort of 85-year-olds born in 1930, within the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies in Sweden. Results: Test results were reported descriptively. Sensorineural hearing loss was present in one or both ears in almost all participants (98%), and the majority had absent DPOAEs. Only approximately 6% had additional conductive hearing loss, that is, mixed hearing loss. Approximately 20% of the participants with a pure-tone average at 0.5–4 kHz < 60 dB HL had worse word recognition scores compared with predicted scores by the Speech Intelligibility Index (SII), whereas only two participants were classified with neural dysfunction with the use of ABR. Conclusions: Sensorineural hearing loss, likely related to outer hair cell loss, was present in the vast majority of 85-year-olds. Conductive/mixed hearing loss appears to be relatively rare in advanced age. Poor word recognition scores in relation to SII-predicted scores were relatively common (20%) in 85-year-olds, whereas auditory neuropathy was only rarely identified (1.6%) by the use of ABR latencies. To explain abnormal word recognition and to identify the neural component of hearing loss among the older-old population, future research should consider factors such as listening effort and cognition among the older-old population.

25. An algorithm to determine the most suitable location to construct new commercial harbours

Abstract

The planning of a new harbour should be performed by applying high attention to minimise the transportation time and cost during its lifetime. An algorithm is proposed to determine the most suitable location to construct new commercial harbours and ports. To determine the most suitable location for new harbours locally, a simplified simulation method is prepared to compute the characteristics of sea waves. In the proposed global model, the distribution of population, the transportation price, capacities of existing harbours, and the demands for export/import cargos are employed as the main factors. In this model, an index called the total transportation price index (TTPI) is introduced. TTPI is calculated and examined for any potential location where the new harbour or port might be constructed. The proposed model has been validated by applying it to a case study for the conditions of several big commercial harbours of the Persian Gulf on Iran’s coastlines. The case study indicates that the position of the Port of Imam Khomeini is the most suitable technically. This study shows that the Chahbahar Port has the worst location to serve the entire country and should be limited to serving locally to the nearby provinces.

This article is a follow-up on the recent publication introducing the concept of “Voluntary Selection” which allows for engineering the phenotypic profile of a population by adopting the reproductive cells of donors rather than couples themselves. Foreseeing a genetically converging world through Voluntary Selection, and looking from a Middle Eastern and North African perspective, the article focuses on five major themes where improvements are necessary to allow for maintaining stability and achieving a minimum level of living standards despite matters such as different levels of access to environmental resources, global warming and depleting fossil fuel resources. These themes are namely the provision of evolutionary explanation for religions, women’s rights, generating wealth in the form of living atmospheres, distributed workload across society and distributed food production. The following discussions illustrate how by changing the way we look at the world, utilizing our available but neglected resources, dreaming, believing, and acting, we can solve some of the most fundamental global problems. The provided solutions are protective of individual freedoms, facilitate the convergence of lifestyles to a pleasant, practical, elegant, sustainable and modern model and protect the fabric of society as the foundation for higher-level achievements necessary for the maintenance and improvement of our living standards.

Abstract

Based on available literature sources, we have listed the genera and species of springtails (Collembola) of Iran located in Southwest Asia. In total, 301 named species of Collembola are listed in catalogue. This includes 286 described species in 109 genera from 20 families recorded from Iran. Of them, 15 species are also considered as dubious species. It also includes 15 genera whose species are still unknown. Information about biology, geographical distribution, ecology, authorship records for different provinces, and bibliographical data of Iranian Collembola are included.

35. Efecto del tiempo de lixiviación y posición de las semillas en la germinación y características vegetativas de Moringa peregrina (Forssk.) Fiori

Abstract

Introducción: Las semillas de Moringa peregrina (Forssk.) Fiori tienen propiedades beneficiosas para la salud y potencial considerable como biocombustible. No obstante, el cultivo está limitado por la calidad variable de las semillas. Objetivo: Investigar el efecto de la posición de la semilla en la vaina y el tratamiento de lixiviación sobre la germinación y características vegetativas de las plántulas. Materiales y métodos: Las semillas se numeraron del 1 al 6 (la posición cercana a la parte unida al tallo fue la número 1). Para investigar el efecto de lixiviación en la germinación y las características vegetativas, las semillas se expusieron a agua corriente durante 0, 24 y 48 h. El experimento consistió en un diseño completamente aleatorizado con arreglo factorial. Resultados y discusión: La posición de la semilla tuvo efecto significativo (P ≤ 0.05) en las variables, excepto en el peso fresco de las raíces y número de hojas; la germinación fue mayor en las semillas de las posiciones medias de la vaina, que fueron también las más pesadas (0.73 g). La lixiviación durante 48 h aumentó la germinación al 88 %. Este tratamiento produjo el mayor número de hojas (16.82) y los valores más altos de diámetro del cuello (3.50 mm), peso seco de hojas (0.11 g), tallo (0.08 g) y raíz (0.50 g), y longitud de raíz (10.10 cm). La interacción de la posición y la lixiviación fue significativa. Conclusiones: El rendimiento general de la germinación y el crecimiento de las plántulas pueden mejorarse mediante la inmersión de semillas de la posición media de la vaina en agua corriente durante 48 h.

Abstract

Humans are adept at a wide variety of motor skills, including the handling of complex objects and using tools. Advances to understand the control of voluntary goal-directed movements have focused on simple behaviors such as reaching, uncoupled to any additional object dynamics. Under these simplified conditions, basic elements of motor control, such as the roles of body mechanics, objective functions, and sensory feedback, have been characterized. However, these elements have mostly been examined in isolation, and the interactions between these elements have received less attention. This study examined a task with internal dynamics, inspired by the daily skill of transporting a cup of coffee, with additional expected or unexpected perturbations to probe the structure of the controller. Using optimal feedback control (OFC) as the basis, it proved necessary to endow the model of the body with mechanical impedance to generate the kinematic features observed in the human experimental data. The addition of mechanical impedance revealed that simulated movements were no longer sensitively dependent on the objective function, a highly debated cornerstone of optimal control. Further, feedforward replay of the control inputs was similarly successful in coping with perturbations as when feedback, or sensory information, was included. These findings suggest that when the control model incorporates a representation of the mechanical properties of the limb, that is, embodies its dynamics, the specific objective function and sensory feedback become less critical, and complex interactions with dynamic objects can be successfully managed.

45. Occupational safety risk analysis in construction sites based on fuzzy analytic hierarchy process: A case study in a large construction project

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Construction projects are one of the most critical occupational sectors that experienced many challenges in occupational accidents and safety performance. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess safety risk in construction projects based on fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. METHODS: This study was conducted with 12 construction and occupational safety experts in one of the largest construction projects in Tehran-Iran in 2020. The process of this study included (1) risk identification, (2) measurement of risk parameters and sub-parameters, and (3) risk assessment based on a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Risk-forming parameters in this study included the probability and severity of the event. The probability of occurrence was estimated based on four sub-parameters of technical inspection, accident experience, detection probability, and human reliability. Sub-parameters of severity included human injury, cost imposition, tarnishing the organization’s esteem, and impact on project timing and work stoppage. RESULTS: Twenty-eight identified hazards were examined in the studied construction project, including falling from a height (9-hazard), falling objects (2-hazard), electric shock (6-hazard), falling crane or load (6-hazard), elevator crashes (2-hazard), and soil fall (3-hazard). Safety risk assessment revealed that 27 risk sources were at the tolerable level and one risk source was unacceptable. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the risk levels in the studied construction project were tolerable and unacceptable. The obtained model in this study demonstrated that using parameters that determine the probability and severity of risk according to the nature of the working environments can be a practical step in risk evaluating and implementing control measures.

49. Removal of Natural Organic Matter (NOM) from Aqueous Solutions by Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Modification with Magnetic Fe3O4 Nanoparticles

Abstract

Backgroundand Aim. Natural organic matter (NOM) has become one of the most serious environmental problems due to its persistence in aqueous solutions and the risk of carcinogenesis. In this study, the removal efficiencies of real and synthetic humic acid (HA) by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated with iron oxide were evaluated. Materials and Methods. The MWCNs were synthesized and coated with iron oxide. In addition, the effects of pH, contact time, mixing speed, and adsorbent dose on the removal efficiency of NOM by MWCNTs-Fe3O4 were studied. Then, the removal efficiency of NOM from real samples was investigated at optimal conditions. The MWCNT-Fe3O4 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Data analysis was performed using Minitab software based on the Taguchi method. Results. The results showed that MWCNTs were coated with Fe3O4. The SEM test shows particle (MWCNTs-Fe3O4) size in the range of 48–143 nm, and the particles have uniform spherical shapes. Enix software was used to identify the phase in this sample. The conditions including p H = 3 , mixing speed = 120 rpm, adsorbent dosage = 1.5 g·L−1, and contact time = 90 minutes were selected as optimal for NOM adsorption. The mean removal efficiencies of NOM in synthetic samples at 5, 10, and 20 mg·L−1 concentrations were 86.6%, 84.87%, and 95.41%, respectively. In addition, the mean removal efficiency of NOM in Choghakhor Wetland was 77%. Conclusion. Our findings demonstrated that the MWCNTs-Fe3O4 can be potentially used as an adsorbent for removing natural organic matter (HA) from aqueous solutions.

50. Leveraging Natural Language Processing for Automated Information Inquiry from Building Information Models

Abstract

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a trending technology in the building industry that can increase efficiency throughout construction. Various practical information can be obtained from BIM models during the project life cycle. However, accessing this information could be tedious and time-consuming for non-technical users, who might have limited or no knowledge of working with BIM software. Automating the information inquiry process can potentially address this need. This research proposes an Artificial Intelligence-based framework to facilitate accessing information in BIM models. First, the framework uses a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to determine the user's question type. Simultaneously, it employs natural language processing (NLP) for syntactic analysis to find the main keywords of the user's question. Then it utilizes an ontology database such as IfcOWL and an NLP method (latent semantic analysis (LSA)) for a semantic understanding of the question. The keywords are expanded through the semantic relationship in the ontologies, and eventually, a final query is formed based on keywords and their expanded concepts. A Navisworks API is developed that employs the identified question type and its parameters to extract the results from BIM and display them to the users. The proposed platform also includes a speech recognition module for a more user-friendly interface. The results show that the speed of answering the questions on the platform is up to 5 times faster than the manual use by experts while maintaining high accuracy.
