Slitless spectrometers can provide simultaneous imaging and spectral data over an extended field of view, thereby allowing rapid data acquisition for extended sources. In some instances, when the object is greatly extended or the spectral dispersion is too small, there may be locations in the focal plane where contributions from emission lines at different wavelengths contribute. It is then desirable to unfold the overlapped regions in order to isolate the contributions from the individual wavelengths. In this paper, we describe a method for such an unfolding, using an inversion technique developed for an extreme ultraviolet imaging spectrometer and coronagraph named the COronal Spectroscopic Imager in the EUV (COSIE). The COSIE spectrometer wavelength range (18.6 - 20.5 nm) contains a number of strong coronal emission lines and several density sensitive lines. We focus on optimizing the unfolding process to retrieve emission measure maps at constant temperature, maps of spectrally pure intensity in the Fe XII and Fe XIII lines and density maps based on both Fe XII and Fe XIII diagnostics., Comment: 22 pages

We report observations of bright dots (BDs) in a sunspot penumbra using High Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) data in 193 \AA\ and examine their sizes, lifetimes, speeds, and intensities. The sizes of the BDs are on the order of 1\arcsec\ and are therefore hard to identify in the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) 193 \AA\ images, which have 1.2\arcsec\ spatial resolution, but become readily apparent with Hi-C's five times better spatial resolution. We supplement Hi-C data with data from AIA's 193 \AA\ passband to see the complete lifetime of the BDs that appeared before and/or lasted longer than Hi-C's 3-minute observation period. Most Hi-C BDs show clear lateral movement along penumbral striations, toward or away from the sunspot umbra. Single BDs often interact with other BDs, combining to fade away or brighten. The BDs that do not interact with other BDs tend to have smaller displacements. These BDs are about as numerous but move slower on average than Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) BDs, recently reported by \cite{tian14}, and the sizes and lifetimes are on the higher end of the distribution of IRIS BDs. Using additional AIA passbands, we compare the lightcurves of the BDs to test whether the Hi-C BDs have transition region (TR) temperature like that of the IRIS BDs. Supra-arcade downflows (SADs) have been observed with Yohkoh/SXT (soft X-rays (SXR)), TRACE (extreme ultra-violet (EUV)), SoHO/LASCO (white light), SoHO/SUMER (EUV spectra), and Hinode/XRT (SXR). Characteristics such as low emissivity and trajectories which slow as they reach the top of the arcade are consistent with post-reconnection magnetic flux tubes retracting from a reconnection site high in the corona until they reach a lower-energy magnetic configuration. Viewed from a perpendicular angle, SADs should appear as shrinking loops rather than downflowing voids. We present XRT observations of supra-arcade downflowing loops (SADLs) following a coronal mass ejection (CME) on 2008 April 9 and show that their speeds and decelerations are consistent with those determined for SADs. We also present evidence for a possible current sheet observed during this flare that extends between the flare arcade and the CME. Downward motions above post-coronal mass ejection flare?arcades are an unanticipated discovery of the Yohkoh mission, and have subsequently been detected with TRACE, SOHO/LASCO, SOHO/SUMER, and Hinode/XRT. These supra-arcade downflows are interpreted as outflows from magnetic reconnection, consistent with a three-dimensional generalization of the standard reconnection model of solar flares. We present results from our observational analyses of downflows, which include a semiautomated scheme for detection and measurement of speeds, sizes, and?for the first time?estimates of the magnetic flux associated with each shrinking flux tube. Though model dependent, these findings provide an empirical estimate of the magnetic flux participating in individual episodes of patchy magnetic reconnection, and the energy associated with the shrinkage of magnetic flux tubes.

The frequency distributions of sizes and fluxes of supra-arcade downflows (SADs) provide information about the process of their creation. For example, a fractal creation process may be expected to yield a power-law distribution of sizes and/or fluxes. We examine 120 cross-sectional areas and magnetic flux estimates found by Savage & McKenzie for SADs, and find that (1) the areas are consistent with a log-normal distribution and (2) the fluxes are consistent with both a log-normal and an exponential distribution. Neither set of measurements is compatible with a power-law distribution nor a normal distribution. As a demonstration of the applicability of these findings to improved understanding of reconnection, we consider a simple SAD growth scenario with minimal assumptions, capable of producing a log-normal distribution., Published in ApJL

[1] We examine phenomena associated with eruptions in the two different regimes of the solar corona and the terrestrial magnetosphere. We find striking similarities between the speeds of shrinking magnetic field lines in the corona and dipolarization fronts traversing the magnetosphere. We also examine the similarities between supra-arcade downflows observed during solar flares and bursty bulk flows seen in the magnetotail and find that these phenomena have remarkably similar speeds, velocity profiles, and size scales. Thus we show manifest similarities in the magnetic reconfiguration in response to the ejection of coronal mass ejections in the corona and the ejection of plasmoids in the magnetotail. The subsequent return of loops to a quasi-potential state in the corona and field dipolarization in the magnetotail are physical analogs and trigger similar phenomena such as downflows, which provides key insights into the underlying drivers of the plasma dynamics.

As the Swift era approaches, the University of Wyoming in Laramie has been preparing its two observatories for a robust GRB afterglow follow‐up program. The 2.3‐m Wyoming Infrared Observatory (WIRO) — first of its kind in collecting power and mid‐infrared optimization — is located on Jelm Mt. (2944‐m elevation) in a semi‐arid atmosphere, 40 km southwest of Laramie. On dry, cold winter nights, our estimates show that WIRO’s sensitivity in the K‐band is comparable to that of a 4‐m telescope at Mauna Kea observatory in Hawaii. Three instruments are currently in use at the observatory: WIRO‐Prime, WIRO‐Spec, and the Goddard IR camera. WIRO‐Prime is a 20482 prime‐focus camera with a 20 arcmin diameter FOV (f/2.1). Its sensitivity for a 300‐s exposure will reach as faint as 24th (23rd) magnitude in V (R). WIRO‐Spec is an integral field, holographic spectrometer which utilizes Volume‐Phase‐Holographic gratings with a 20482 detector.
