The Final Bronze Age (ca. 1080–725 BC) in the Western Carpathians is characterized by increased cross-cultural militarization, which culminated in the collapse horizon era in Ha C1a. Here, the Lusatian culture introduced a series of investments in defensive infrastructure in the Ha A2–B1 period, many of which were maintained and reinforced over the following centuries. Spectacular finds of deposited weapons, including bronze swords (Komjatná, Martinček, Liptovské Sliače), which are rarely found in graves of that time, are known from the Váh river valley. The Final Bronze Age hoard of Súľov-Hradná II, Bytča dist. (Ha B1; 1080–960 BC), newly represents a multi-typic find of 9 bronze swords (reine Schwerthort) and magnificently illustrates the recurring codified behaviour of votive weapon deposition in the aquatic and mountain environment of the Western Carpathians. As the Old Germanic toponym of Žibrid hill (867 m; germ. Sivrit/Sieg-fried = victorious peace) suggests, the knowledge of the deposition event may have survived to the present day, and it recalls the old Celto-Germanic rule of sacrificing the weapons of the defeated party, and provides a powerful addition to the understanding some characteristic and strikingly recurring patterns in the bronze archaeological record in Central Europe.A késő bronzkort (kb. Kr.) je v Západných Karpatoch charakteristická zvýšenou medzikultúrnou militarizáciou, ktorá vyvrcholila érou zánikového horizontu v Ha C1a. Lužická kultúra tu v období Ha A2–B1 zaviedla sériu investícií do obrannej infraštruktúry, z ktorých mnohé boli udržiavané a zosilnené počas nasledujúcich storočí. Práve z tohto obdobia sú z údolia rieky Váh známe veľkolepé nálezy deponovaných zbraní vrátane bronzových mečov (Komjatná, Martinček, Liptovské Sliače), ktoré sa v hroboch tej doby vyskytujú zriedkavo. Neskorobronzové depozitum Súľov-Hradná II, okr. Bytča (1080–960 pr. Kr.) novo reprezentuje homogénny nález 9 bronzových mečov (reine Schwerthort) a ilustruje opakujúce sa kodifikované správanie votívneho ukladania zbraní vo vodnom a vysokohorskom prostredí Západných Karpát. Ako uvádza aj starogermánske toponymum vrchu Žibrid (867 m; germ. Sivrit/Sieg-fried = víťazný mier), znalosť udalosti deponovania mohla pretrvať až do súčasnosti, a pripomína staré keltsko-germánske pravidlo obetovania zbraní porazenej strany, a poskytuje silný doplnok v pochopení niektorých charakteristických a nápadne sa opakujúcich vzorcov v archeologickom zázname bronzu v strednej Európe.

The claim that the historical Jesus was a violent revolutionary has seen a revival in recent years with the work of Dale Martin and Fernando Bermejo-Rubio. Central to their case is the datum that Jesus’s disciples were armed at the time of his arrest in anticipation of their active participation in an end-time battle. However, whilst it can be established that it is likely that the disciples did carry bladed implements that could be used as weapons, when the literary and material-cultural evidence is scrutinised more closely, it is unreasonable to infer that these were intended to be used for apocalyptic ends or that the disciples or anyone else would see them as evidence of military intent.

This paper presents the study of a sword found in Talayot del Serral de ses Abelles (Puigpunyent, Mallorca). The remarkable state of conservation of this sword and the fact that it is the only item of its kind documented in the 21st century in an archaeological excavation make it an exceptional find. The main purpose of this research is to characterise its technological and archaeological significance. The analytical information presented (14C, XRF, ICP-MS, radiography, metallography, micro-hardness and LIA) makes possible the dating of one of these objects for the first time, and provides important information to understand the manufacturing process of this sword, its functionality, its social significance, as well as aspects related to the provenance of the copper ores used. This paper traces the portrayal of violence in cinema through the ages taking into consideration two films from two disparate countries and cultures - the Japanese Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa and its remake, the Indian blockbuster Sholay by Ramesh Sippy which was set in two different eras. This paper critiques the representation of violence in the two films and the reasons that led the films to become blockbuster hits. It takes into account the technical innovations used during the making and the resultant effect it had on the spectators. It also discusses the aspects which show that they are similar yet different from each other. Although Sholay has taken inspiration from Seven Samurai, its aggressive, dominant villain Gabbar is a well-rounded character and light has been thrown on his sadistic means. The samurai’s Bushido code of combat has been discussed concerning Kambei and the other samurai and how they remain loyal to it until the very end.

RESUMEN: En el presente trabajo se analizan los datos proporcionados por los diversos tratados de esgrima conservados hasta nuestros días. Se sigue un recorrido cronológico partiendo del primero de los manuales históricos conservados para apreciar su evolución. Se hace hincapié en su valor instrumental de cara a la formación en la esgrima del individuo en relación al contexto del oficio de las armas, la connotación social del buen uso de la espada, las estructuras que instruyen en el uso de las armas y su uso práctico, ya sea para la guerra, la defensa personal o el duelo. ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the data provided by the many fencing manuals that remained to this day. It follows a chronological structure starting with the very first of all preserved fencing manuals to notice its evolution. It will pivot around its instrumental value in teaching the individual according to the context of warfare, the social connotations of the correct use of the sword, the structures which trains in the way of arms and its practical ussage, either for war, self defense or duel. This paper aims to study the swords discovered in the necropolis of El Castillo (Castejón, Navarra). They come from tombs dated in the Second Iron Age, between the 2nd ó of 4th c. and 3rd c. BC. A period marked by a process of generalization of armament and by the existence of burials with complex panoplies, with both offensive and defensive weapons. The uniqueness of the site is reflected in the analyzed set, in which three very different models of swords are documented. Este artículo tiene por objeto estudiar las espadas halladas en la necrópolis de El Castillo (Castejón, Navarra). Proceden de tumbas fechadas en la Segunda Edad del Hierro, entre la 2ª ó del s. IV y el s. III a. C. Un período marcado por un proceso de generalización del armamento y por la existencia de enterramientos con panoplias complejas, con armas tanto ofensivas como defensivas. La singularidad del yacimiento se ve reflejada en el conjunto analizado, en el que se documentan tres modelos muy diferentes de espadas.

Walory oręża podnosić miało m.in. sygnowanie, przy czym zabieg ten znajdował rozmaite realizacje: od umieszczenia pojedynczego piktogramu do złożonych układów w postaci napisów, ciągów literowo-znakowych lub bardziej złożonych motywów ornamentacyjnych, niekiedy o charakterze narracyjnym. W artykule zwrócono uwagę na możliwości interpretacji umieszczanego na głowniach mieczowych symbolu w kształcie “W”, niekiedy określanego w literaturze przedmiotu także jako “omega” “haftka”, “podkowa” czy “kabłączek skroniowy”. Zebrano informację na temat 32 mieczy, na których zidentyfikowano w sposób mniej lub bardziej pewny znak “W” (Polska – 7 egz., Finlandia – 5 egz., Niemcy – 4 egz., Rosja, Holandia – po 3 egz., Estonia, Anglia – po 2 egz., Białoruś, Czechy, Francja, Irlandia, Norwegia, Słowacja – po 1 egz.). Nie wykazują one tendencji do koncentrowania się w jakimś wybranym rejonie Europy, aczkolwiek większość z nich używana była w pasie północnoeuropejskim, grupując się przede wszystkim wokół wybrzeży Morza Bałtyckiego i Północnego. Analiza typologiczna wykazała znaczne zróżnicowanie formalne omawianego zbioru. Zwracają również uwagę szerokie ramy czasowe, zamykające się w przedziale VIII–XI w., przy czym większość okazów pochodzi z X–1. poł. XI w. Znak “W” znajduje się z jednej strony głowni, przy czym występuje on tam jako samodzielny (pojedynczy lub podwojony) motyw, ewentualnie w zestawie z innymi symbolami, bądź też w większej liczbie. Najczęściej mamy do czynienia z układem horyzontalnym dwóch zwróconych ku sobie zakończeniami “W”, pomiędzy którymi znajdować się mógł inny symbol, na ogół krzyż. Zdarzają się też konfiguracje bardziej złożone. Omega posiada dużą wymowę symboliczną w sferze religijnej, zwłaszcza w kręgu kultury chrześcijańskiej. Wyobrażenie jej na mieczu, zwłaszcza w połączeniu z krzyżem, wolno z dużym prawdopodobieństwem uznać za odnoszącą się do Boga symboliczną formę inwokacji, mającą sprowadzić na walczącego tak sygnowanym mieczem łaskę i ochronę Pańską. Intencją uwidocznienia tej sygnatury na głowni mogła być także chęć zamanifestowania przynależności religijnej posiadacza oręża. Z drugiej jednak strony należy liczyć się z magiczną wymową omawianej sygnatury, niezależną od pierwotnej intencji jej zastosowania. Niewątpliwie więc kwestia interpretacji “W” wymaga dalszych pogłębionych studiów, zmierzających do ustalenia, co stało się impulsem do sygnowania głowni mieczowych właśnie w ten sposób oraz jakie były uwarunkowania historyczno-kulturowe pojawienia się rozpatrywanego znaku na mieczach i dalsza jego recepcja.

The author analyzes two medieval swords (one found near Kalenic monastery and one near the Cuprija town) from the funds of the Department of Archaeology in the Regional Museum in Jagodina. He presents arguments in opposition to the typological classification existent in scholarly literature of the first one, and concludes that the both specimens most probably originate from the same workshop, as were being stamped with identical maker-marks. In the end the author draws one?s attention to circumstances of the site find of the first sword, and also points towards possible directions of research of the sacred topography of the Kalenic monastery environs.

This article examines the compilation and transcription of the eighteenth century source commonly known as the 'Dublin Annals of Inisfallen'. It reviews, in particular, the work's most substantial entries, i.e. those which concern the O'Briens and the history of Thomond in the medieval period, and briefly highlights the historical value of other longer entries relating to the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The 'Dublin Annals' attests to the readiness with which scribes indulged in editorial intrusion, while it also offers insights into the factors which impinged upon textual trans mission in the Modern Irish period.

[ES] Se presenta el estudio tecnológico de un nuevo depósito del Bronce Final aparecido en Puertollano (Ciudad Real). Compuesto exclusivamente por armas (14 espadas y puñales y un fragmento de regatón) constituye un deposito singular entre los conocidos en la Península ibérica. Se incluyen los análisis de composición mediante técnica PIXE que indican que todas las piezas son bronces binarios Cu-Sn con bajo nivel de impurezas. Se discute sobre la funcionalidad y uso práctico de estas producciones armamentísticas., [EN] This paper deals with the technological study of a new Late Bronce Age hoard found in Puertollano (Ciudad Real). This hoard is a singular found in the context of Iberian Peninsula due to the number of items (14 swords and daggers and 1 fragment of ferrule) and all of them are weapons. Elemental analysis by PIXE shows a Copper- Tin alloy with very low impurity pattern. A general comment about the real use of this weapons is included.

In 1751 the king Fernando VI ordered to the Real Academia de la Historia a report on the fortuitous finding of a renaissance sword in Peñafiel (Valladolid). This report allows an approach to arms studies in the eighteenth century, when legendary arguments coexisted with a modern reasoning personalized by Ignacio de Luzán. It is also important an enclosed drawing as its accurate record.En 1751 el rey Fernando VI solicitó a la Real Academia de la Historia un informe sobre el hallazgo fortuito de una espada renacentista en Peñafiel (Valladolid). Este informe permite aproximarnos al estudio de las armas durante el siglo XVIII, en el que las explicaciones legendarias conviven con planteamientos modernos personalizados por Ignacio de Luzán. Destaca igualmente por la incorporación de una detallada documentación gráfica de dicha espada.

The present report provides a short description of a conference titled “Second International Research Conference on the History of Arms and Armor in Kyiv, Ukraine”. It was the second scientific conference dedicated to the study of historical weapons in Ukraine. A number of international experts in the field of historical arms and armor were invited to the conference. Each researcher had been asked to provide a short and a long article on a specific research subject. The short articles had already been published in a peer-review booklet that was handed out before the start of the conference. The long articles will be published together as a large collection of paper in future.

They are few notices published about swords manufacture in Spain during the 16th century. One of the most unknown productions centers is the city of Bilbao, wich developed an important production of arms in part destined to its export to the British Islands. This article studies some documents, it is specialy interesting an unpublished document about the litigation hold up in 1569 between Bilbao swordsmiths and the «Corregidor» from Bilbao. Thanks of them it has been posible to compile names, marks and information about the activity of this craftsmen.Son escasas las noticias que poseemos sobre las zonas donde se fabricaban espadas en España. Uno de los centros más desconocidos es el de la ciudad de Bilbao, que desarrolló durante todo el siglo XVI, una importante producción de armas en parte destinadas a su exportación a las Islas Británicas. Gracias a una serie de documentos, entre los que figura uno inédito que recoge el pleito que los espaderos de Bilbao mantuvieron en 1569 con el Corregidor de Vizcaya, se han podido recoger algunos nombres y datos que permiten conocer más sobre la actividad de estos artesanos.

The study of the Bronze-Age sword from La Perla (Madrid, Spain) shows the development of a unique hilt design in the shape of a double-arch during the Early and Middle Bronze Ages. After the well-known paper by Almagro-Gorbea in 1972 on the Guadalajara sword, new archaeological finds during the last thirty years have shown the singularity of this system as against those employed in other parts of Europe, a singularity confirmed by numerous metallurgical analyses of Bronze Age swords. El estudio de la espada madrileña de La Perla viene a constatar un modelo único de enmangar espadas en España durante el Bronce Antiguo y Medio, mediante empuñaduras de doble arco. Desde el trabajo clásico de Almagro Gorbea en 1972 sobre la espada de Guadalajara, se han venido sucediendo en estas casi tres décadas, nuevos hallazgos arqueológicos que refuerzan la singularidad del ejemplo español con respecto a otras áreas europeas y que se completa con la investigación de los análisis metalúrgicos realizados a numerosas espadas de la Edad del Bronce.

The inventory of places and artefacts dating from the Bronze Age in the three countries of Limousin shows a multitude of metal artefacts in comparison with pottery, particularly in Creuse. The investigation of products shows a balance ofatlantic and eastern influences during the period of early Bronze and at the beginning of middle Bronze. The end of middle Bronze seems to be under atlantic influence in its type and metallurgy, pottery approaching "Duffaits". Places are scarce for late Bronze where pottery are known only on late Bronze IIIb. Investigations achieved on metal things show a stong influence of metal work from atlantic zone. However, the discovery of matrix and crucibles leeds supposed a local production that could be justified by the existence of metal deposits in the country., L'inventaire des sites et du mobilier de l'Age du Bronze dans les trois départements du Limousin permet de constater une surreprésentation des objets de métal par rapport à la céramique avec une prédominance des sites creusois. L'analyse chronologique et typologique du mobilier montre un équilibre des influences atlantique et orientale au Bronze ancien et au début du Bronze moyen. La fin de cette période semble s'inscrire largement dans une métallurgie et une typologie atlantique, la céramique se rapprochant de celle des " Duffaits ". Les sites sont plus rares pour le Bronze final où la céramique n'est connue que pour le Bronze final IIIb. Les analyses effectuées sur les objets de métal montrent une forte influence des techniques métallurgiques de la zone atlantique. Cependant, la découverte de moules et de creusets permet d'envisager une production locale qui pourrait se justifier par l'existence de gisements métallifères dans la région., Hernandez Oscar, Léger Patrick, Vuaillat Dominique. International audience; 355 Hallstatt C swords are recorded in Gaul. With the exception of about 41 specimens found in rivers, these swords, for which the context of discovery is known, come from graves in barrows. These sword graves fall into two main geographically distinct groups of unequal size. The smallest group corresponds to about 34 cremation burials found in the northeast of Gaul, possibly extending towards the northwest. It spreads from Champagne in France to south Gelderland in the Netherlands and was called Mosan group by E. Warmenbol. This group presents cultural characteristics of Atlantic and Nordic affinities. The second group, numerically larger, corresponds to 170 inhumation burials distributed from the Upper Rhine to the southwest of the Massif Central. It is this group, belonging to Hallstatt cultures, that we will primarily address.In each of these two groups of sword graves, the deposited and preserved artifacts are sparse. In the inhumation burials the sword is placed with a scabbard or a textile cover next to the deceased, often on the right side of the body, alone or accompanied by one to three vessels. A razor and bracelet regularly are associated with the body. Other categories of objects are rare. The deceased and the accompanying artifacts are arranged under a barrow, whose architecture varies by region, but whose size remains modest. The layouts associated with the barrow, including enclosures, are simple.In the past, archaeologists connected these sword graves with an emerging elite, of either foreign (before the 1980s, the dominant theory being invasions by eastern horsemen) or local origin. Some even considered that they were the beginning of an ongoing and increasingly complex socioeconomic process that would culminate with the princely wagon burials at the end of the first Iron Age.The perspective, given by taking into account more global data not only from the beginning of the first Iron Age but also the end of the Late Bronze Age, today suggests a very different interpretation of this phenomenon. Aside from five graves generally attributable to the late Ha C (Chavéria, Magny-Lambert, Marainville-sur-Madon, Ohnenheim, Poiseul-la-Ville), the Ha C sword inhumations finally appear rather poor; and, register in a context of profound break with the Late Bronze Age, apparently even inside a context of a crisis with multiple causes (the crisis of the 8th century BC). These sword tombs therefore do not demonstrate the development of a more powerful elite than in preceding period; quite the contrary, but, a new self-representation system through the adoption of a renewed material culture and the recomposition of funeral practices with standardized rules.; Sur l'ancien territoire de la Gaule, 355 épées du Hallstatt C sont répertoriées. Ce groupe mosan présente principalement des caractéristiques culturelles d'affinités atlantiques et nordiques. Le second groupe, plus important numériquement, correspond à 170 sépultures à inhumation distribuées du Rhin supérieur au sud-ouest du Massif central. C'est de ce groupe, appartenant aux cultures hallstattiennes, que nous parlerons. Dans chacun de ces deux groupes de tombes à épée, le mobilier déposé et conservé est peu abondant. Dans les tombes à inhumation, l'épée est placée auprès du défunt, généralement dans un fourreau et au côté droit, seule ou plus souvent accompagnée de vases (entre un et trois vases). Un rasoir et un bracelet sont régulièrement associés. Les autres catégories d'objets sont rarement déposés. Le défunt et le mobilier de ces sépultures sont disposés sous un tumulus, dont l'architecture varie selon les régions, mais dont la taille reste modeste. Les aménagements associés au tumulus, enclos notamment, sont simples. Par le passé, les archéologues ont souvent mis ces sépultures à épée en relation avec l'émergence d'une élite, qu'elle soit supposée d'origine étrangère (théorie dominante des invasions de peuples cavaliers orientaux avant les années 1980), ou locale. Certains ont même considéré qu'elles marquaient le début d'un processus continu de complexification socio-économique qui culminerait avec les tombes à char princières de la fin du premier âge du Fer.Le recul donné par une prise en compte plus globale des données pour le début de l'âge du Fer, mais aussi la fin de l'âge du Bronze final, permettent aujourd'hui de proposer une interprétation très différente du phénomène. A part cinq sépultures dont quatre attribuables à l'extrême fin de la période (Chavéria, Magny-Lambert, Marainville-sur-Madon, Ohnenheim, Poiseul-la-Ville), les tombes à épée du Ha C apparaissent finalement assez pauvres et s'inscrivent dans un contexte de profonde rupture avec l'âge du Bronze final, apparemment même dans un contexte de crise aux causes multiples, la crise du VIIIe s. av. J.-C. Elles ne manifestent donc pas le développement d'une élite plus puissante qu'aux époques précédentes, bien au contraire, mais un nouveau système de représentation de soi, à travers l'adoption d'une culture matérielle renouvelée et la recomposition des pratiques funéraires selon des normes strictes et interrégionales.

Swords have been regarded as emblems of power and honour, symbols of status and authority belonging to several gods and heroes of many mythologies and cultures, but also as the main weapons of knights. Oaths were made upon swords and they were the companions of the most fearsome warriors and heroes. They were, sometimes, magical and had wills of their own, but above all swords were personal objects intimately connected to their owners. This article will first clarify the connection between fantasy literature and the Middle Ages in the creation of George R. R. Martin’s world in A Song of Ice and Fire, since that historical period influences the way that swords are portrayed in his work. It will then focus on exploring how swords are connected to their owner’s identity, an aspect that is present in the following swords: Eddard Stark's Ice, Jon Snow's Longclaw, Stannis Baratheon's Lightbringer, and Arya Stark's Needle.
