The Central Solenoid (CS) is at the core of the EU DEMO tokamak, and has a strong impact on the tokamak design and the overall machine size. By ramping its current, the CS generates a change of magnetic flux, which initiates the plasma, and induces and controls the plasma current. In the context of the conceptual design studies for DEMO coordinated by EUROfusion, the Swiss Plasma Center has developed a simple pre-dimensioning methodology, assuming uniform current density in the solenoid winding pack, and considering the use of Nb3Sn and REBCO. The effects of grading of the superconductor and structural steel are also discussed. Since the CS for the EU DEMO will experience tens of thousands of charge/discharge cycles during its lifetime, mechanical fatigue considerations are taken into account. The proposed methodology has been used for the preliminary design of the CS winding pack, and for a number of parametric analyses in the context of the integrated physics and engineering studies for the EU DEMO machine (identifying the relationship between key performance parameters of the solenoid, such as the generated magnetic flux and the fatigue lifetime).

People who have undergone total laryngectomy typically have difficulties speaking and coughing. Coughing, the protective reflex action where air is rapidly expelled from the lungs to clear the airway, is crucial in everyday life. Insufficiency in coughing can lead to serious chest infections. In this research we present a bionic assistive coughing device (RoboCough) to improve coughing efficacy among laryngectomy patients by increasing pressure and flow rate. RoboCough was designed to mimic the function of the glottis and trachea in the upper respiratory system. Experimental results show a significant increase (t(64) = 4.9, p < 0.0001) in peak cough flow rate and peak cough pressure (t(64) = 12.6, p < 0.0001) among 33 control participants using RoboCough. A pilot study with a smaller cohort of laryngectomy patients shows improvement in peak cough pressure (p = 0.0159) using RoboCough. Preliminary results also show that post-laryngectomy coughs achieved similar peak cough flow (Z = -0.9933, p = 0.32) to the control group’s natural cough. Coughing capabilities could be improved through using RoboCough. Applications of RoboCough include simulation of vocal folds and respiratory conditions, rehabilitation of ineffective coughs from laryngeal and respiratory diseases and as a test-bed for the development of medical devices for respiratory support.

Superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRISs) using NbTi coils and optimized for 28 GHz resonant heating have been successfully operated for almost two decades. Moving to higher heating frequencies requires increased magnetic fields, but traditional racetrack-and-solenoid ECRIS structures are at their limit using NbTi. Rather than moving to a superconductor untested in this field, the Mixed Axial and Radial field System (MARS) being developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory employs a novel closed-loop-coil design that more efficiently utilizes conductor fields and will allow the use of NbTi in a next-generation, 45 GHz ECRIS. This article presents the design of the shell-based support structure central to the MARS-D magnet design, as well as structural analysis of its components and optimization of pre-load parameters that will guarantee its successful operation.

To improve the linearisation of the variable flow-regulate system under the open-loop control, a proportional solenoid valve with high-linearity performance was developed to meet that requirement of the high-precision and open-loop control. The design of the proportional solenoid valve evolves the optimisation of a magnetic circuit structure, the construction of a balanced pressure structure and the compensation of a feedforward control device. As for the solenoid, it is very challenging to meet the requirement of 95% linearity. A feedforward control device with the Bouc–Wen model and a quadratic inverse function model is a good solution to address the hysteresis problem and achieve better performance. The optimisation of a simple magnetic circuit with low sensitivity to the moving armature and a balance chamber for removing the pressure difference are both preconditions to make the compensation. The feedforward control device is the next step to eliminate the hysteresis problem and non-linear characteristics of the solenoid by solving model coefficients measured in the test. After the improvement in these aspects, the proportional solenoid valve can meet the demand of digital proportional flow control with >98% linearity and excellent repeatability, through the validation of both no-load and high-load performance tests.

In this paper, we give new formulas for calculating the self-inductance for circular coils of the rectangular cross-sections with the radial and the azimuthal current densities. These formulas are given by the single integration of the elementary functions which are integrable on the interval of the integration. From these new expressions, we can obtain the special cases for the self-inductance of the thin-disk pancake and the thin-wall solenoids that confirm the validity of this approach. For the asymptotic cases, the new formula for the self-inductance of the thin-wall solenoid is obtained for the first time in the literature. In this paper, we do not use special functions such as the elliptical integrals of the first, second and third kind, nor Struve and Bessel functions because that is very tedious work. The results of this work are compared with already different known methods and all results are in excellent agreement. We consider this approach novel because of its simplicity in the self-inductance calculation of the previously-mentioned configurations.

This study first analyses the problems that the solenoid valve generates during operation. Then the electromagnetic valve was modelled and ANSYS finite element analysis simulation software was used to simulate the electromagnetic field and transient magnetic field of the solenoid valve. The magnetic induction intensity distribution diagram and magnetic field distribution diagram of the electromagnet were obtained. According to the simulation results of the solenoid valve, the magnetic flux leakage line is blocked after the magnetic isolation cover is added, the magnetic induction strength of the iron core and the valve head is increased, the leakage magnetic flux is reduced, and the structure is optimised.

Wear is one of the common faults in the mechanical transmission system. Detection of wear particles in lubricating oil can detect and evaluate the wear degree of mechanical equipment. The electromagnetic sensor for metal wear particle detection can be connected in series with the oil circuit, which has the advantages of full liquid flow, simple structure, distinguishing metal properties, and not being influenced by bubbles and vibration. In view of the shortcomings of the existing electromagnetic sensor for wear particle detection, the detection principle and the induction electromotive force model were studied, and the magnetic field change of the metal particles through three coil differential solenoids was analysed. The optimisation design method was proposed here, which was about the related parameters, such as the wire diameter, the coil turns, the coil widths and so on. The experimental analysis of the sensor was carried out based on detection hardware system that could provide the phase-locked amplification function. The 10-mm inner diameter sensor could detect the minimum 100-μm ferromagnetic metal abrasive particles after optimisation. The developed sensor could provide data information for the abrasive particle detection, fault diagnosis and early warning of wear degree of mechanical equipment.

Middle-size robot soccer is one of the divisions that competed in national events such as the National Indonesia Robotics Competition and international competitions such as the middle size league (MSL). One of the main components in soccer robots is the kicker system. The kicker system is expected to be high torque, robust, and safe. In this work, a high voltage kicker system is designed and evaluated to substitute ROSTU's previous kicker system. This high voltage solenoid-based kicker system works at 380V and uses the electromagnetic force principle to move a ball. The performance criteria of the kicker system are it can move a ball with a mass of around 1 kg for a minimum range of 3 m and control the charging and discharging process in high voltage conditions. The experiment results show that the kicker system can move a ball with a mass of 1.06 kg, a difference kick distance from 100cm to 350cm, and a monitoring system that can show information about the capacitor voltage and system status.

This paper examines different models for calculating the magnetic field of solenoids. Accuracy and computation time are compared for a range of different simplified models: a current loop and a thin shell solenoid, and solenoids with finite length and thickness. There is no definitive answer to “what model is the best”, as it depends on the specific use case, but there are certain models that excel in speed or accuracy, and there are models that have very limited use. This paper serves as an overview and will help the reader make an informed choice of a model.

If the magnetic resonance coupling-based wireless power transmission system has multiple receivers, cross-coupling will occur between the transmitter and the receiver, resulting in the variation of transmission characteristics when compared with the case of a single receiver. To solve this problem, a mutual inductance coupling circuit model for double-relay and multi-load transmission system and a calculation model for mutual inductance between solenoid coils in the same plane have been built to study the transmission characteristics of the system through simulation and testing. The study results show that: the cross-coupling effect between the transmitter and the receiver will cause resonance frequency shift, or even lead to the variation of resonance frequency splitting characteristic; when compared with a single-load system, the multi-load system may increase in total transmission power and efficiency; generally, with the introduction of additional receivers, the receiving power and efficiency of the original loads will decrease; along with the increase in circuit spacing and the decrease in cross-coupling, the transmission characteristics will gradually regress to the state of a single-load system. In this article, the calculation model for mutual inductance is correct and the maximum relative error in these calculating examples is 5.28%.

Pneumatically-actuated soft robots have advantages over traditional rigid robots in many applications. In particular, their flexible bodies and gentle air-powered movements make them more suitable for use around humans and other objects that could be injured or damaged by traditional robots. However, existing systems for controlling soft robots currently require dedicated electromechanical hardware (usually solenoid valves) to maintain the actuation state (expanded or contracted) of each independent actuator. When combined with power, computation, and sensing components, this control hardware adds considerable cost, size, and power demands to the robot, thereby limiting the feasibility of soft robots in many important application areas. In this work, we introduce a pneumatic memory that uses air (not electricity) to set and maintain the states of large numbers of soft robotic actuators without dedicated electromechanical hardware. These pneumatic logic circuits use normally-closed microfluidic valves as transistor-like elements; this enables our circuits to support more complex computational functions than those built from normally-open valves. We demonstrate an eight-bit nonvolatile random-access pneumatic memory (RAM) that can maintain the states of multiple actuators, control both individual actuators and multiple actuators simultaneously using a pneumatic version of time division multiplexing (TDM), and set actuators to any intermediate position using a pneumatic version of analog-to-digital conversion. We perform proof-of-concept experimental testing of our pneumatic RAM by using it to control soft robotic hands playing individual notes, chords, and songs on a piano keyboard. By dramatically reducing the amount of hardware required to control multiple independent actuators in pneumatic soft robots, our pneumatic RAM can accelerate the spread of soft robotic technologies to a wide range of important application areas.

In the past few decades, the multifunctional magnetic drug carrier based on the magnetic nanoparticles and high magnetic field has been intensively researched. The magnetic drug carrier can be targeted to the tumour area not only by the chemical protocol but also by the physical one (external field). In this review, the authors first briefly discuss the fabrication process of magnetic drug carriers, which includes the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles, fabrication of magnetic drug carriers and conjugation of anti-tumour agents. Then different targeted protocols have been summarised, including passive targeting, biochemical active targeting and biophysical active targeting namely magnetic targeting (MT). Multiple MT results both in vitro and in vivo are introduced, in which two unconventional cases are emphasised and described. The first MT clinical research with 14 peoples was performed in the last century. A 0.5–0.8 T permanent magnet was attached to the tumour area when magnetic particles conjugated with epirubicin were injected. The side effect of epirubicin had been decreased, and the four patients showed the decreasing of a tumour which proved the feasibility of MT. Different from other targeting protocols, MT needs an extra external magnetic field. So various types of MT instruments have been shown in the final part of this review, including a single strong magnetic field, homemade electronic solenoid coil assay and commercial magnetic resonance imaging.

The dosage sprayed upon per unit area is an important index to measure the effects of pesticide application. Owing to the fact that parameters such as flight height, flight speed, and spray swath can change at any given time, it is impossible to ensure a consistent amount of pesticide application per unit area during the course of aerial variable spray. In order to ensure a consistent amount of pesticide application per unit area, a set of control models of aerial variable spray using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was proposed, and the corresponding control system was developed based on the technology of aerial variable spray. According to the change of flight parameters, this system was able to adjust the opening degree of solenoid valve through the control model of aerial variable spray. After that, the amount per unit time would change to ensure a consistent amount of pesticide application per unit area, which effectively avoided the phenomenon of uneven pesticide application and improved the accuracy. According to the actual demand for the area in need of pesticide application, the operator can manually control the amount of pesticide applied and change the dosage sprayed upon per unit area to achieve a better effect. Through field tests, it was verified that the system has high accuracy of variable control. The deviation range was between 0.11% and 9.79%, which met the demands of agricultural aviation pesticide application. Furthermore, the system had strong stability for working continuously for more than 6 h at 30°C to meet the environmental requirements of pesticide application via UAV. All the data related to the pesticide application were stored in this system, which provided a reference for the further study of the precision technology in pesticide application. The model proposed in this paper also provided a theoretical basis for the technology development of aerial variable spray.

Electromechanical solenoid actuators are widely used in industrial applications that require fast and linear motion. High velocities can be achieved in small stroke lengths; in turn the motion results with high-velocity impacts, which may cause excessive noise and create mechanical damage to the parts. In this paper, three distinct position reference profiles are tested using Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control and Sliding Mode Control (SMC) in a closed loop to achieve the soft landing of the actuators plunger. The experimental results reveal that the SMC is robust and can be used to reduce the impact of the fast motion. TÜBİTAK

During High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR-BT) the spatial position of the radiation source inside catheters implanted into a female breast is determined via electromagnetic tracking (EMT). Dwell positions and dwell times of the radiation source are established, relative to the patient's anatomy, from an initial X-ray-CT-image. During the irradiation treatment, catheter displacements can occur due to patient movements. The current study develops an automatic analysis tool of EMT data sets recorded with a solenoid sensor to assure concordance of the source movement with the treatment plan. The tool combines machine learning techniques such as multi-dimensional scaling (MDS), ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and particle filter (PF) to precisely detect and quantify any mismatch between the treatment plan and actual EMT measurements. We demonstrate that movement artifacts as well as technical signal distortions can be removed automatically and reliably, resulting in artifact-free reconstructed signals. This is a prerequisite for a highly accurate determination of any deviations of dwell positions from the treatment plan.

A physical model of electromagnetic induction is developed which relates directly the forces between electrons in the transmitter and receiver windings of concentric coaxial finite coils in the near-field region. By applying the principle of superposition, the contributions from accelerating electrons in successive current loops are summed, allowing the peak-induced voltage in the receiver to be accurately predicted. Results show good agreement between theory and experiment for various receivers of different radii up to five times that of the transmitter. The limitations of the linear theory of electromagnetic induction are discussed in terms of the non-uniform current distribution caused by the skin effect. In particular, the explanation in terms of electromagnetic energy and Poynting’s theorem is contrasted with a more direct explanation based on variable filament induction across the conductor cross section. As the direct physical model developed herein deals only with forces between discrete current elements, it can be readily adapted to suit different coil geometries and is widely applicable in various fields of research such as near-field communications, antenna design, wireless power transfer, sensor applications and beyond.

The Fermilab Mu2e experiment has been developed to search for evidence of charged lepton flavor violation through the direct conversion of muons into electrons. The transport solenoid is an s-shaped magnet that guides the muons from the source to the stopping target. It consists of 52 superconducting coils arranged in 27 coil modules. A full-size prototype coil module, with all the features of a typical module of the full assembly, was successfully manufactured by a collaboration between INFN-Genoa and Fermilab. The prototype contains two coils that can be powered independently. To validate the design, the magnet went through an extensive test campaign. Warm tests included magnetic measurements with a vibrating stretched wire and electrical and dimensional checks. The cold performance was evaluated by a series of power tests and temperature dependence and minimum quench energy studies.

Despite offering many advantages over traditional rigid actuators, soft pneumatic actuators suffer from a lack of comprehensive, computationally efficient models and precise embedded control schemes without bulky flow-control valves and extensive computer hardware. In this article, we consider an inexpensive and reliable soft linear actuator, called the reverse pneumatic artificial muscle (rPAM), which consists of silicone rubber that is radially constrained by symmetrical double-helix threading. We describe analytical and numerical static models of this actuator, and compare their performance against experimental results. To study the application of rPAMs to operate underlying kinematic linkage skeletons, we consider a single degree-of-freedom revolute joint that is driven antagonistically by two of these actuators. An analytical model is then derived, and its accuracy in predicting the static joint angle as a function of input pressures is presented. Using this analytical model, we perform dynamic characterization of this system. Finally, we propose a sliding-mode controller, and a sliding mode controller augmented by a feed-forward term to modulate miniature solenoid valves that control air flow to each actuator. Experiments show that both controllers function well, while the feed-forward term improves the performance of the controller following dynamic trajectories.

Magneto-inductive (MI) communication is a viable technology for wireless communications in underwater and underground environments. In this paper, a new design for an MI transmitter is presented. Unlike conventional MI transmitters that utilize coiled loops or solenoids to generate magnetic fields, we demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of using a rotating permanent magnet. We also present and experimentally verify a modulation technique that does not involve changing the rotational speed of the magnet. By electrically changing the permeability of a surrounding shield, the fields from the rotating magnet are amplitude modulated. Our findings suggest that increased efficiency and bandwidth can be realized compared to conventional MI transmitters.

A noninvasive current sensor for rail installation is presented, starting from the requirement definition and preliminary finite-element method (FEM) analysis. The sensor is complemented with a low-noise large-dynamic-range amplifier; the results of a thorough experimental characterization are presented and commented upon, together with a series of considerations on the suitability of an open-type sensor with respect to external disturbance. The dynamic range and frequency range are quite extended (from 1 mA to 10 kA and 10 Hz to 20 kHz, respectively) so that it may be defined as a high-performance sensor.

Even though this assumption is mathematically valid, a physical consideration of the problem does not allow such an assumption. In the present study, perhaps for the first time, a finite element formulation, physically consistent with the problem, has been developed. Vibration reduction in the plate by positioning the magnetostrictive layer and its current carrying actuating coil pair along the plate is investigated. Issues associated with control for different boundary condition are highlighted.

This work focuses on the design of transmitting coils in weakly coupled magnetic induction communication systems. We propose several optimization methods that reduce the active, reactive and apparent power consumption of the coil. These problems are formulated as minimization problems, in which the power consumed by the transmitting coil is minimized, under the constraint of providing a required magnetic field at the receiver location. We develop efficient numeric and analytic methods to solve the resulting problems, which are of high dimension, and in certain cases non-convex. For the objective of minimal reactive power an analytic solution for the optimal current distribution in flat disc transmitting coils is provided. This problem is extended to general three-dimensional coils, for which we develop an expression for the optimal current distribution. Considering the objective of minimal apparent power, a method is developed to reduce the computational complexity of the problem by transforming it to an equivalent problem of lower dimension, allowing a quick and accurate numeric solution. These results are verified experimentally by testing a number of coil geometries. The results obtained allow reduced power consumption and increased performances in magnetic induction communication systems. Specifically, for wideband systems, an optimal design of the transmitter coil reduces the peak instantaneous power provided by the transmitter circuitry, and thus reduces its size, complexity and cost.

Se describe brevemente el sistema y se discuten los desplazamientos y rotaciones observados en las estructuras, comparando las observaciones hechas en superfi cie y en el punto P5 (UX5), 100 m bajo tierra.

Magnetic Levitation has found tremendous utility in fields like transport and tribology. It is also one of the classic experiments used in introductory courses in controls. This paper discusses a two-dimensional extension to this classic experiment. In this proposed setup, a diamagnetic object is to be levitated using the magnetic field strength of two solenoids with an iron core each located in two separate locations with their axes in the same vertical plane. The key feature of this new setup is the ability to levitate the object in any position within a portion of a plane as compared to a single line in the classical experiment. Using two currents in the coils as two inputs, the objective is to have a position and velocity control of the object. In order to do so, first, the analytical form of the magnetic field strength outside the two solenoids is determined. Then, the magnetic force acting on the sphere is evaluated. Using these expressions, equilibrium points are established based on the required position and the stability of these points is analysed. Matchbox manifolds are foliated spaces with totally disconnected transversals. Two matchbox manifolds which are homeomorphic have return equivalent dynamics, so that invariants of return equivalence can be applied to distinguish non-homeomorphic matchbox manifolds. In this work we study the problem of showing the converse implication: when does return equivalence imply homeomorphism? For the class of weak solenoidal matchbox manifolds, we show that if the base manifolds satisfy a strong form of the Borel Conjecture, then return equivalence for the dynamics of their foliations implies the total spaces are homeomorphic. In particular, we show that two equicontinuous $\mT^n$--like matchbox manifolds of the same dimension are homeomorphic if and only if their corresponding restricted pseudogroups are return equivalent. At the same time, we show that these results cannot be extended to include the "\emph{adic}-surfaces", which are a class of weak solenoids fibering over a closed surface of genus 2., Comment: This work is an extensive revision of the previous version on the arXiv

We propose an approach for magnetic microbead transport in microfluidic channels over long-range distances using an array of simple planar coils. The latter are placed in a uniform static magnetic field, the role of which is to impose a permanent magnetic moment to the microbeads. The very small magnetic field gradient of a simple planar coil is then sufficient to displace the microbeads. The long-range displacement is assured by arranging adjacent coils in the array with spatial overlap in a three-phase actuation scheme.

A rather complete mathematical model for a common-rail injection-system dynamics numerical simulation was developed to support experimentation, layout, and control design, as well as performance optimization. The thermofluid dynamics of the hydraulic-system components, including rail, connecting pipes, and injectors was modeled in conjunction with the solenoid-circuit electromagnetics and the mechanics of mobile elements. One-dimensional flow equations in conservation form were used to simulate wave propagation phenomena throughout the high-pressure connecting pipes, including the feeding pipe of the injector nozzle. In order to simulate the temperature variations due to the fuel compressibility, the energy equation was used in addition to mass conservation and momentum balance equations. Besides, the possible cavitation phenomenon effects on the mass flow rate through the injector bleed orifice and the nozzle holes were taken into account. A simple model of the electromagnetic driving circuit was used to predict the temporal distribution of the force acting on the pilot-valve anchor. It was based on the experimental time histories of the current through the solenoid and of the associated voltage that is provided by the electronic control unit to the solenoid. The numerical code was validated through the comparison of the prediction results with experimental data, that is, pressure, injected flow rate, and needle lift time histories, taken on a high performance test bench Moehwald-Bosch MEP2000-CA4000. The novel injection-system mathematical model was applied to the analysis of transient flows through the hydraulic circuit of a commercial multijet second-generation common-rail system, paying specific attention to the wave propagation phenomena, to their dependence on solenoid energizing time and rail pressure, as well as to their effects on system performance. In particular, an insight was also given into the model capability of accurately predicting the wave dynamics effects on the rate and mass of fuel injected when the dwell time between two consecutive injections is varied.

In Multijet Common Rail (C.R.) systems, the capability to manage multiple injections with full flexibility in the choice of the dwell time (DT) between consecutive solenoid current pulses is one of the most relevant design targets. Pressure oscillations triggered by the nozzle closure after each injection event induce disturbances in the amount of fuel injected during subsequent injections. This causes a remarkable dispersion in the mass of fuel delivered by each injection shot when DT is varied. The present works aims at investigating hydraulic circuit design keys to improve multiple injection performance of C.R. systems, by virtually removing the dependence of the injected fuel amount on DT. A Multi-Jet C.R. of the latest solenoid-type generation was experimentally tested at engine-like operating conditions on a high performance test bench. The considerable influence that the injector supplying pipe can exert on induced pressure oscillation frequency and amplitude was widely investigated and a physical explanation of cause-effect relationships was found by energetics considerations, starting from experimental tests. An optimization study was carried out to identify the best geometrical configurations of the injector supplying pipes so as to minimize pressure oscillations. The analysis was carried out with the aid of a previously developed simple zero-dimensional model, allowing the evaluation of pressure wave frequencies as functions of main system geometric data. Purposely designed orifices were introduced into the rail-pipe connectors or at the injector inlet, so as to damp pressure oscillations. Their effects on injection system performance were experimentally analyzed. Hydraulic circuit solutions that apply both optimized injector inlet-pipe sizes and oscillation damping orifices at the rail outlet were thoroughly investigated. Finally, the influence of the rail volume on pressure wave dynamics was studied to evaluate the possibility of severely reducing the rail capacitance. This would lead to a system, not only with reduced overall dimensions, but also with a prompter dynamic response during engine transients.Copyright © 2006 by ASME

Inductors, transmission lines, and Tesla transformers have been modeled with lumped-element equivalent circuits for over a century. In a well-known paper from 1904, Paul Drude predicts that the mutual inductance for an unloaded Tesla transformer should be nonreciprocal. This historical curiosity is mostly forgotten today, perhaps because it appears incorrect. However, Drude's prediction is shown to be correct for the conditions treated, demonstrating the importance of constraints in deriving equivalent circuits for distributed systems. The predicted nonreciprocity is not fundamental, but instead is an artifact of the misrepresentation of energy by an equivalent circuit. The application to modern equivalent circuits is discussed.

We present a measurement of the direct CP violating asymmetry in the decay B-0-->K(+)pi(-) using a data sample of 227x10(6) Y(4S)-->B (B) over bar decays ollected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider at SLAC. We observe a total signal yield of n(K)(-)pi(+)+n(K)(+)pi(-)=1606+/-51 decays and measure the asymmetry (n(K)(-)pi(+)-n(K)(+)pi(-))/(n(K)(-)pi(+)+n(K)(+)pi(-))=-0.133+/-0.030(s tat)+/-0.009(syst). The probability of observing such an asymmetry in the absence of direct CP violation is 1.3x10(-5), corresponding to 4.2 standard deviations.

We explore the connections between automata, groups, limit spaces of self-similar actions, and tilings. In particular, we show how a group acting ``nicely'' on a tree gives rise to a self-covering of a topological groupoid, and how the group can be reconstructed from the groupoid and its covering. The connection is via finite-state automata. These define decomposition rules, or self-similar tilings, on leaves of the solenoid associated with the covering., Comment: to appear in J. Algebra

For mappings ƒ : S1 x ℝn → S1 x ℝn (n≥2) of the form ƒ ( t,x ) = (Θt,λx+v(t)), where Θ ∈ ℤ, Θ ≥ 2, λ ∈ (0, 1), v ∈ C1(S1,ℝn) we consider the open subset Sn,Θ,λ of C1(S1,ℝn) which consist of all v for which the restriction of ƒ to its attractor is injective. It is shown that for λ < min(½,Θ-2/(n-1)) this set Sn,Θ,λ is dense in C1(S1,ℝn) and that for each odd n it is not dense provided λ ≥ 64Θ-2/(n-1).

The aim was to focus on the individual needs of students while learning programming. Creating a social online environment for solving exercises and sharing solutions seemed to be effective to support instructors as well as students.

Ion acceleration is achieved in a low-pressure solenoid-free plasma expanded by permanent magnet arrays. Although a permanent magnet normally forms cusp magnetic fields which prevents plasma diffusion and double layer formation, by employing double concentric arrays of permanent magnets, a constant field area, and a diverging magnetic field can be generated near the outlet of the plasma source. In the source, a rapid potential drop with 4 cm thickness from 50 V to 20 V is generated at the diverging field area for 0.35 mTorr and a supersonic ion beam accelerated through the potential drop is observed in the diffusion chamber. The beam energy can be increased up to over 40 eV with a decrease in gas pressure.

The high-frequency impedance of a planar solenoid with a thin magnetic core is theoretically investigated using the magnetostatic Green’s function formalism. It is shown that the electrical behavior of the solenoid depends on how the magnetic field induced by the current-carrying coil is coupled to the different magnetostatic modes of the core. The magnetic response of the core in each mode is determined by an effective susceptibility matrix which depends on exact, but mode-dependent demagnetization factors. Those factors determine the frequency of the magnetostatic excitations of the core, manifested as resonances in the impedance of the solenoid. Using the formalism developed, the effect of the core width and magnetic loss on the impedance of the device is studied.

The search for pair production of scalar top quarks in an R-parity violating supersymmetry scenario in 106 pb-f of pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab was discussed. It was found that in this mode each t1̃ decayed into a τ lepton and a b quark. The events with two τ's, one decaying leptonically and one decaying hadronically and two jets were searched. It was observed that a 95% confidence level lower limit was set on the t 1̄ mass at 122 GeV/c2 for Br(t1̃ → τb). 92 5 518031 518037 Cited By :16

State-of-the-art high field solenoids make use of hybrid designs exploiting the superior high field performance of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) in the innermost region. The benefits of a hybrid Central Solenoid in a pulsed tokamak like the EU DEMO can he two-fold: either to reduce its outer radius (which would result in a reduced overall size and cost of the tokamak), or to increase the generated magnetic flux (which could extend the plasma burn time and possibly increase the power plant efficiency). In the framework of the pre-conceptual design studies for DEMO coordinated by EUROfusion, a hybrid Central Solenoid is proposed based on ten layer-wound sub-coils using HTS, Nb3Sn, and Nb-Ti conductors respectively for the high, medium, and low field sections. The design exploits the flexibility of layer winding by grading both the superconductor and the stainless steel cross sections in each sub-coil, which has the potential for space and cost savings. Mechanical analyses have identified fatigue as the main design driver for the EU DEMO Central Solenoid. Possible alternatives to reduce the sensitivity of the proposed design to fatigue are currently under investigation.
