Social belonging interventions are designed to improve positive student outcomes like engagement, academic outcomes, social capital, and well-being. Despite many of the existing studies that have assessed the effectiveness of these interventions in higher education, there is a need for statistical synthesis to determine their effectiveness across different university student populations. The purpose of this planned systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the impact of social belonging interventions on university students’ outcomes and establish factors that govern the relationship between social belonging and student outcomes using random effects meta-regression. Electronic databases will be searched using keywords related to higher education, wise interventions and social belonging. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the primary outcome measure will be changes in learning/academic performance and the secondary outcome measure will be changes in well-being. Each study will be assessed for quality using a validated tool such as the Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, version 3, will also be used for the random-effects meta-analyses. The results will provide important information about the effects of social belonging interventions on university students and will facilitate the identification of factors that may enhance or hinder their efficacy. This will help university staff make informed choices about whether or not to use the social belonging intervention and contribute to the development of evidence-based practices in higher education
