This repository contains the data and R codes used in the study "Functional diversity patterns of reef fish, corals and algae in the Brazilian biogeographical province" (Journal of Biogeography). We are attaching to this repository the results of functional diversity analyses, model selection analysis and output. We set an embargo to the whole project because a dataset (coral traits) cannot be released up to February 2024.

Brazil is the seventh largest producer of mangoes in the world, and the São Francisco Valley is the main producing region, with ‘Kent’ as one of the main cultivars. Considering that irrigation management affects physiological events, production and fruit quality, the objective of this work was to evaluate the gas exchange in the leaves and fruit quality of ‘Kent’ mango subjected to controlled water deficit in the semi-arid region. The experiment was carried out in Petrolina-PE, semi-arid region of the São Francisco Valley. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in a triple factorial scheme, with four irrigation depths (40, 60, 80 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc), three phenological stages (F1 - flowering, F2 - fruit growth, F3 - fruit maturation) and two production cycles (2018 and 2019), with four replicates. During the phenological stages, the physiological parameters of gas exchange were evaluated. After harvesting, the following parameters were evaluated: soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, firmness and peel color. Irrigation with a depth between 79.5 and 83.6% ETc during the evaluated stages promoted greater gas exchange in the leaves, greater firmness and acidity in the fruits. The reduction in irrigation depth in F1 and F3 reduced the soluble solids content, while in F2 the highest soluble solids content was obtained with irrigation between 68.24 and 74.5% ETc. The most suitable irrigation depth for ‘Kent’ mango cultivation depends on the purpose of the producer and on the phenological stage of the crop.

Myofibroblastoma of the breast is a benign tumor originated from mesenquimal cells with a very low incidence in breast pathology. Only 80 cases were reported until 2018. Eight histological patterns were described and may mimic a number of other breast diseases. A 55-years old male was diagnosed with an incidental left breast nodule. An ultrasonography with biopsy showed a 27 mm nodule compatible with myofibroblastoma. We performed a lumpectomy via modified Benelli technique. Surgery was curative and the only necessary treatment. Myofibroblastoma could be misdiagnosed and clinical differential diagnosis includes other benign and malignant breast lesions. In the setting of a diagnosis, histology may be confusing as myofibroblastoma may exhibit a wide spectrum of histological features that defines 8 variants. These subgroups can mimic malignant lesions in their histological pattern. Definitive diagnosis depends on histopathological and immunochemical results. Physicians must be aware about heterogeneity in morphological and immunochemical aspects of myofibroblastoma and his variants, as they can lead to erroneous management of the lesion. Surgery is important for a definitive and accurate diagnosis, excluding malignancy and relieving the burden of a close image-based surveillance.

Lactation diets dependent on rumen undegradable protein (RUP) sources derived from soybean meal (SBM) products are generally high in Lys and poor in Met. We conducted an experiment to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary RUP and altering digestible AA supply by inclusion of heat-treated soybean meal (HTSBM) or high-protein corn dried distillers grains with soluble (DDGS) on performance in mid-lactation dairy cows. Twenty-four Holstein cows (200 ± 40 d in milk and 30.0 ± 3.92 kg/d of milk yield) blocked according to parity, milk yield, and days in milk were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design experiment with 21-d periods. Treatments were (1) control (CON), a diet with 6.0% RUP containing 15.9% SBM as the main protein source; (2) HTSBM, a diet with 6.7% RUP containing 4.4% HTSBM partially replacing SBM; and (3) high-protein DDGS (FP; FlexyPro, SJC Bioenergia), a diet with 6.9% RUP containing 5.34% FP partially replacing SBM and ground corn. Diets had similar crude protein (16.9%) and net energy of lactation. Data were submitted to ANOVA using the mixed procedure of SAS software (SAS Institute Inc.). Treatment differences were evaluated using orthogonal contrasts: (1) increasing RUP (SBM vs. HTSBM + FP) and (2) altering digestible AA supply (HTSBM vs. FP). Cows fed HTSBM and FP had greater intake (values in parentheses represent treatment means of CON, HTSBM, and FP, respectively) of neutral detergent fiber (7.14, 7.35, and 7.69 kg/d), crude protein (4.27, 4.37, and 4.51 kg/d), and ether extract (0.942, 0.968, and 1.04 kg/d) compared with cows fed CON. Feeding FP resulted in greater intake of neutral detergent fiber and ether extract compared with HTSBM. Cows fed HTSBM and FP had lower sorting index for feed particles4 mm than cows fed CON (1.029, 1.008, and 1.022). Feeding FP resulted in greater intake of feed particles4 mm compared with HTSBM. Treatments containing HTSBM or FP tended to decrease organic matter digestibility (72.4, 71.2, and 71.1%), but no other effects were detected in digestibility of neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, or ether extract. No evidence for differences among treatments was detected in excretion of purine derivatives in milk and urine. Milk yield was greater in cows fed HTSBM or FP than in cows fed CON (28.0, 28.9, and 28.8 kg/d, respectively). Cows fed HTSBM or FP tended to have greater energy-corrected milk and protein yield compared with those fed CON. Milk protein concentration was greater in DDGS cows than those in the HTSBM group (3.45 and 3.40%, respectively). No differences were detected in milk fat yield and concentration, milk urea nitrogen, feed efficiency, or serum concentrations of urea and glucose. Overall, increasing dietary RUP by feeding HTSBM or FP improved intake of nutrients and milk yield without affecting feed efficiency. Altering digestible AA supply while maintaining similar dietary RUP had negligible effects on performance of cows.

Although the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil is a major producer of yellow passion fruit, the problems of salts in the soil and water sources, in many areas have limited the growth and production of this crop, which highlights the importance of studies aimed at reducing such effects. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of pyruvate, as a mitigator of salt stress, on the morphophysiology of yellow passion fruit, in seedling phase. The treatments consisted of three electrical conductivities of irrigation water (ECw: 0.8, 2.4, and 4.0 dS m-1) and three concentrations of pyruvate (0, 25, and 50 mM), distributed in a randomized block experimental design in a 3 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications and two plants per plot. Irrigation with ECw of 4.0 dS m-1 reduces growth variables, phytomass, Dickson quality index, and increases electrolyte leakage in passion fruit seedlings cv. Redondo Amarelo. Exogenous application of calcium pyruvate (25 and 50 mM) increased growth, phytomass, Dickson quality index, relative water content and leaf succulence and reduced electrolyte leakage in the leaf blade in passion fruit. Exogenous application of pyruvate attenuates salt stress, with beneficial effects on CO2 assimilation rate, transpiration, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, intrinsic water use efficiency, and root dry mass.

With the expansion of sugarcane cultivation in the semiarid region of Brazil, there is a constant risk of soil salinization because of the edaphoclimatic peculiarities of the region, requiring studies to identify genotypes tolerant to salt stress. This study evaluated the agrotechnological characteristics of sugarcane cultivars irrigated with salinized water. This study was performed in the experimental area of the Academic Unit of Agricultural Engineering of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil. The treatments consisted of a combination of two sugarcane cultivars (SP 81 3250 and RB 92 579) and five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.6, 1.6, 2.6, 3.6, and 4.6 dS m-1). A randomized block design was used in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme with four replicates, totaling 40 experimental units. The sugarcane cultivar SP 81 3250 under irrigation with saline water of 0.6, 1.6, and 2.6 dS m-1 promoted a greater number of leaves in relation to RB 92 579, 125 days after planting. The salinity of the irrigation water varying from 0.6 to 4.6 dS m-1 reduces the culm height and culm mass per clump of the sugarcane, regardless of the cultivar. The sugarcane cultivar RB 92 579 had the highest culm height, number of tillers, culm mass per clump, percentage of apparent sugars, soluble solids, polarized sucrose, and total recoverable sugars, whereas SP 81 3250 had the highest percentage of water-insoluble matter contained in the cane, regardless of water salinity.

The salinity of irrigation water or soil is the abiotic factor that most negatively impacts the yield of crops, including green maize, so it is necessary to find alternatives to ensure production. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments, and growth of maize under salinity of irrigation water and application of hydrogen peroxide. The experiment was conducted at the Center of Sciences and Agrifood Technology, Pombal, PB, belonging to the Federal University of Campina Grande, in the period from January to February 2015, using the maize hybrid ‘AG 1051’. The treatments consisted of two salinity levels of irrigation water (0.3 and 2.0 dS m-1) and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0, 40, 80, 160, and 320 µmol L-1) applied via irrigation water. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme, with four replicates. ECw of 2.0 dS m-1 reduces transpiration, stomatal conductance, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, and initial growth, but does not affect the dry mass accumulation of maize plants. Application of H2O2 via soil varying from 0 to 320 µmol L-1 causes reductions in the CO2 assimilation rate and transpiration, as well as at concentrations from 0 to 160 µmol L-1 for stomatal conductance of plants irrigated with ECw of 2.0 dS m-1. Application of H2O2 via soil up to a concentration of 320 µmol L-1 increases the plant height, but reduces culm diameter of maize.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has spread worldwide, leading governments to implement mitigation measures. Understanding the reluctance to adhere to non-pharmacological interventions might help promote adherence to these measures. This study aimed to identify factors associated with non-adherence to the first lockdown in Portugal.Cross-sectional study.This study used data from a Portuguese community-based survey entitled 'COVID-19 Barometer: Social Opinion'. Data were collected on risk perception, health status and social experiences using a snowball sampling technique. The event of interest corresponded to participants who reported not staying home during the lockdown period, serving as a proxy for non-adherence to lockdown. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with non-adherence to the first lockdown.Responses from 133,601 individual questionnaires that were completed during the first week of the first lockdown in 2020 were analysed. A minority of participants (5.6%) reported non-adherence to lockdown (i.e. leaving home for reasons other than essential situations). Working in the workplace was the factor with the strongest association of non-adherence to the lockdown. Several other factors were also associated with non-adherence to the first lockdown; namely, being a man, being a student, having a low level of education, having a low income, living alone or with a high-infection-risk professional (e.g. doctor, nurse, pharmaceutical, health technician, firefighter, police officer, military, essential services worker), perceiving the risk of getting COVID-19 to be high, not having social support in case of infection, feeling agitated, sad or anxious every day, and considering the preventive measures to be unimportant or inadequate.Non-adherence to lockdown was associated with socio-economic, trust and perception factors. Future research should investigate the mechanisms underlying these associations to help identify the population groups who are most at risk of non-adherence.

To update a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association of breastfeeding with overweight or obesity that had been commissioned by the World Health Organization. We also assessed the likelihood of residual confounding.Two independent reviewers searched MEDLINE, LILACS and Web of Science for manuscripts published between August 2014 and May 2021. Studies that only evaluated infants were excluded. Random-effects models were used to pool the estimates.The review comprised 159 studies with 169 estimates on the association of breastfeeding with overweight or obesity, and most of the studies were carried out among individuals aged 1-9 years (n = 130). Breastfeeding protected against overweight or obesity (pooled odds ratio:0.73, 95% confidence interval:0.71; 0.76). And, even among the 19 studies that were less susceptible to publication bias, residual confounding and misclassification, a benefit was observed (pooled odds ratio:0.85, 95% confidence interval:0.77; 0.93). Among those studies that were clearly susceptible to positive confounding by socioeconomic status, a benefit of breastfeeding was observed even after adjusting for socioeconomic status (pooled odds ratio:0.76, 95% confidence interval: 0.69; 0.83).Breastfeeding reduced the odds of overweight or obesity, and this association was unlikely to be due to publication bias and residual confounding.

Background: Mediterranean Europe is witnessing an increase in extreme wildfire events, which has led to increasing socioeconomic and ecological impacts. Postfire restoration emerges as an important tool for impact mitigation and ecosystem recovery. However, there is a large knowledge gap on the ecological effects of such interventions. We used remote sensing to assess the impacts of postfire restoration on the recovery of deciduous oak forests in Portugal, based on a total of 3013 sampling points in areas with and without postfire intervention. We quantified the vegetation index NDVI as a proxy of oak forest recovery for a period of 4 years after the fire, for fire events that occurred in 2016 and 2017. Temporal changes in NDVI were modelled with a Generalized Additive Mixed Model (GAMM), as a function of postfire restoration, fire characteristics (burn severity, number of fires, and time since fire), topography (aspect, elevation, and slope) and postfire drought events (PDSI).Results: The fitted model accounted for 26.4% of NDVI variance. The model showed a significant positive effect of postfire restoration on NDVI recovery over time, although with a minor effect; it also showed a negative effect of severe drought and a positive effect of severe wetness on NDVI recovery. Regarding fire characteristics, low and high burn severities showed a positive effect on recovery, while moderate burn severity levels showed a null effect. Number of fires showed an increasingly negative effect on recovery, until a maximum of 6 fires.Conclusions: Oak forest recovery was positively affected by postfire restoration, although this effect was small and likely limited by lack of available data. On the contrary, oak forest recovery was negatively affected by increased drought severity but its relation with fire characteristics varied with thresholds of burn severity levels and number of fires. Our study highlights the importance of monitoring the effects of postfire restoration on forest recovery, in order to improve knowledge on postfire forest management and species adaptation. This becomes even more relevant under forecasted scenarios of increased wildfire frequency and severity interacting with other climate-driven disturbances, which will further impact the capacity of forest recovery in the future.

In this work, a synchronverter-based D-STATCOM with self-synchronization and voltage imbalance compensation capability with operation independent of the power operating modes is proposed. The S-STATCOM's synchronverter base model is firstly presented in space-vector representation together with its control strategy with standard D-STATCOM control structure. Then, the Voltage Imbalance Compensation Loop (VICL) is proposed, which uses two well known resonant control structures, the Double Second-Order Generalized Integrator (DSOGI) and a Proportional plus Resonant controller (PR), in an innovative way to effectively turn the S-STATCOM into a specialized active filter for negative sequence voltage, compensating the voltage imbalance at the PCC by supplying the corresponding oscillating power locally. Simulation and experimental results on a small scale prototype are presented to validate the control strategy, which successfully reduced voltage imbalances from up to 10% to bellow the 2% acceptable levels.

We present the results of the investigation of 58 open clusters using UBVRI CCD photometry (Johnsons-Cousins system) and Gaia eDR3 data. The membership probability of the stars in the cluster’s field was determined from a maximum-likelihood method using Gaia eDR3 astrometric data. The fundamental parameters of the clusters were determined using a robust global optimization method to fit theoretical model isochrones to UBVRI ground-based and Gaia eDR3 photometric data, respectively. We estimated mean proper motion, mean parallax, and fundamental parameters considering the member stars for 25 clusters. Based on the high quality Gaia eDR3 data, the remaining objects of the sample were found to be likely not real. The real clusters are situated from 900 to 3000 pc with ages from about 6 Myr to 2.5 Gyr. The results of the distances and ages obtained for both independent sets of data are in agreement indicating that our method to determine distances and ages using GBP and GRPGaia eDR3 data is reliable.

Species of Liriomyza Mik (Diptera: Agromyzidae) occur worldwide and are economically important leafminers. However, populations of some pest species, although very similar morphologically, show highly divergent mtDNA sequences, suggesting that nominal species are in fact complexes of cryptic species. This study focuses on two globally invasive pests, L. huidobrensis (Blanchard) and L. sativae Blanchard, already known to be highly destructive in Brazilian crops, although only a few studies on morphological and genetic divergences of them have been made. A total of 63 sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and cytochrome oxidase II (COII) from Brazilian populations of L. huidobrensis and L. sativae collected from six crops (gypsophila, chrysanthemum, melon, watermelon, tomato, and onion) in Northeastern Brazil were generated to investigate their genetic structure together with available sequences from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Genetic structure was not found to be correlated to neither host plant nor geographical locality. Liriomyza huidobrensis showed an overall low intraspecific global genetic divergence in both genes. On the other hand, high intraspecific divergences for L. sativae and its phylogenetic position confirm a divergent clade currently found only in Brazil and suggest it may be a global complex of cryptic species. Considering the possibility of cryptic species (in the latter case), we provided detailed redescriptions of these Brazilian populations for future studies and local management of these global pests. Finally, our results also revealed a new synonym herein proposed, L. strigosa Spencer as a junior synonym of L. huidobrensis.

Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) has an astonishingly societal impact in which healthcare services stand out. Amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, challenges include the development of authenticatable smart IoT devices with the ability to simultaneously track people and sense in realtime human body temperature aiming to infer a health condition in a contactless and remote way through user-friendly equipment such as a smartphone. Univocal smart labels based on quick response (QR) codes were designed and printed on medical substrates (protective masks and adhesive) using flexible organicinorganic luminescent inks. Luminescence thermometry and physical unclonable functions (PUFs) are simultaneously combined allowing non-contact temperature detection, identification, and connection with the IoT environment through a smartphone. This is an intriguing example where luminescent inks based on organic-inorganic hybrids modified by lanthanide ions are used to fabricate a smart label that can sense temperature with remarkable figures of merit, including maximum thermal sensitivity of Sr = 1.46 %K−1 and temperature uncertainty of δT = 0.2 K, and an authentication methodology accuracy, precision, and recall of 96.2%, 98.9%, and 85.7%, respectively. The methodology proposed is feasibly applied for the univocal identification and mobile optical temperature monitoring of individuals, allowing the control of the access to restricted areas and the information transfer to medical entities for post medical evaluation towards a new generation of mobile-assisted eHealth (mHealth). published

The knowledge of the main features of the bulk flow in the Local Universe is important for a better determination of the relative motions there, an information that would contribute to a precise calculation of the Hubble-Lema\^{\i}tre law at very low redshifts. We study how to obtain the Hubble-Lema\^{\i}tre law in two sky regions using the catalog of HI sources of the ALFALFA survey, with data $cz_{\odot} < 6000$ km/s. Our methodology aims to compute $H_0$ in two regions -- located in opposite galactic hemispheres -- mapped by the ALFALFA survey, and look for dependence with distance, direction, and also test for reference frame changes. We calculate the Hubble constant, in the Cosmic Microwave Background reference frame, in opposite galactic hemispheres: $H_0^N = 70.87 \pm 2.38$ and $H_0^S = 66.07 \pm 3.02$, which allows us to measure the bulk flow velocity $V_{BF} = 401.06 \pm 150.55$ km/s at the effective distance $31.3 \pm 6.26$ Mpc, a novel result found analysing the ALFALFA data at low redshift. We confirm the influence of the bulk flow on the structures of the Local Universe which manifests through a dipolar behavior of the Hubble constant in opposite hemispheres.

There are challenges associated with recruiting children to take part in randomised clinical trials and as a result, compared to adults, in many disease areas we are less certain about which treatments are most safe and effective. This can lead to weaker recommendations about which treatments to prescribe in practice. However, it may be possible to ‘borrow strength’ from adult evidence to improve our understanding of which treatments work best in children, and many different statistical methods are available to conduct these analyses. In this paper we discuss Bayesian methods for extrapolating adult clinical trial evidence to children. Using an exemplar dataset, we compare the effect of modelling assumptions on the estimated treatment effect and associated heterogeneity. We finally discuss the appropriateness of different modelling assumptions in the context of estimating treatment effect in children.

We investigate the outbreak of anomalous quantum wavefunction amplitudes in a one-dimensional tight-binding lattice featuring correlated diagonal disorder. Such rogue-wave-like behavior is fostered by a competition between localization and mobility. The effective correlation length of the disorder is ultimately responsible for bringing the local disorder strength to a minimum, fuelling the occurrence of extreme events of much higher amplitudes, specially when compared to the case of uncorrelated disorder. Our findings are valid for a class of discrete one-dimensional systems and reveal profound aspects of the role of randomness in rogue-wave generation., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Landscape dynamics are widely thought to govern the tempo and mode of continental radiations, yet the effects of river network rearrangements on dispersal and lineage diversification remain poorly understood. We integrated an unprecedented occurrence dataset of 4,967 species with a newly compiled, time-calibrated phylogeny of South American freshwater fishes—the most species-rich continental vertebrate fauna on Earth—to track the evolutionary processes associated with hydrogeographic events over 100 Ma. Net lineage diversification was heterogeneous through time, across space, and among clades. Five abrupt shifts in net diversification rates occurred during the Paleogene and Miocene (between 30 and 7 Ma) in association with major landscape evolution events. Net diversification accelerated from the Miocene to the Recent (c. 20 to 0 Ma), with Western Amazonia having the highest rates of in situ diversification, which led to it being an important source of species dispersing to other regions. All regional biotic interchanges were associated with documented hydrogeographic events and the formation of biogeographic corridors, including the Early Miocene (c. 23 to 16 Ma) uplift of the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira and the Late Miocene (c. 10 Ma) uplift of the Northern Andes and associated formation of the modern transcontinental Amazon River. The combination of high diversification rates and extensive biotic interchange associated with Western Amazonia yielded its extraordinary contemporary richness and phylogenetic endemism. Our results support the hypothesis that landscape dynamics, which shaped the history of drainage basin connections, strongly affected the assembly and diversification of basin-wide fish faunas.

The riverine population of the Amazon Basin are among the largest consumers of fish in the world, but the consumption patterns could be regionally distinct. Moreover, their total fish catches are not fully known. The objective of this work was to estimate the per capita fish consumption of the riverine people that inhabit the Paciência Island (Iranduba, Amazonas), where there is a fishing agreement in force. A total of 273 questionnaires were applied during the first two weeks of each month between April 2021 and March 2022. The sample unit was the residences. The questionnaire contained questions about the species captured and their quantities. Consumption was calculated by dividing the average monthly capture with the average number of residents per household interviewed, which was multiplied by the number of questionnaires applied. Thirty groups of consumed fish species belonging to 17 families and 5 orders were recorded. The total catch was 3,388.35 kg and the highest monthly catch was 602.60 kg during the falling-water season in October. Daily per capita fish consumption averaged 66.13 ± 29.21 g/day, with a peak of 116.45 g/day during the falling-water season in August. The high fish consumption rate highlighted the importance of fisheries management to food security and the maintenance of the community’s lifestyle. Resumo As populações amazônicas são uma das maiores consumidoras de pescado do mundo, contudo os padrões de consumo podem ser regionalmente distintos. Além disso, as capturas totais não são totalmente conhecidas. O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o consumo per capita e as capturas de pescado por ribeirinhos residentes na Ilha da Paciência (Iranduba, Amazonas), onde há um acordo de pesca vigente. Foram aplicados no total 273 questionários durante as duas primeiras semanas de cada mês entre abril de 2021 e março de 2022. A unidade amostral foram as residências. O questionário continha perguntas sobre as espécies capturadas e respectivas quantidades. O consumo foi calculado pela divisão entre a média de captura mensal com a média de moradores por residência entrevistada que foi multiplicada pelo número de questionários aplicados. Foram registrados 30 grupos de espécies de peixes consumidos pertencentes a 17 famílias e 5 ordens. A captura total foi de 3.388,35 kg e a maior captura mensal foi de 602,60 kg durante a vazante no mês de outubro. O consumo de pescado per capita diário foi em média 66,13 ± 29,21 g/dia, com pico de 116,45 g/dia durante a vazante no mês de agosto. A alta taxa de consumo de pescado mostra a importância do manejo pesqueiro para a segurança alimentar e a manutenção do estilo de vida da comunidade.
