A WSe2 monolayer of 1T' phase is a large band gap quantum spin Hall insulator, supporting dissipationless charge and spin transports through the topologically protected edge states. In this work, we explore the nanoribbon forms of 1T' phase WSe2 by first-principles density functional calculations and the many-body perturbation GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation method. We found that the 1T' WSe2 nanoribbon can show topological edge states with a ribbon width of ~4-6 nm. Those edge bands show crossing through the Fermi level an odd number of times, with one kind of spin-polarization connecting the valence band continuum and conduction band continuum. The topological features of the edge bands hold even under small and medium bending in the nanoribbon, while large bending induces large band splitting, resulting in a topological switch-off in the edge bands. The semiconducting 1T' WSe2 nanoribbon shows a large tunability with bending in optical absorption spectra and exciton states. The lowest-energy exciton is changed from optically dark in the flat nanoribbon to bright in the bent nanoribbons. These properties in the 1T' WSe2 nanoribbons suggest potential applications in controllable quantum electronics and exciton-based quantum information processes., Comment: 15pages

The large tunability of band gaps and optical absorptions of armchair MoS2 nanoribbons of different widths under bending is studied using density functional theory and many-body perturbation GW and Bethe–Salpeter equation approaches. We find that there are three critical bending curvatures, and the non-edge and edge band gaps generally show a non-monotonic trend with bending. The non-degenerate edge gap splits show an oscillating feature with ribbon width n, with a period $$\Delta n=3$$ Δ n = 3 , due to quantum confinement effects. The complex strain patterns on the bent nanoribbons control the varying features of band structures and band gaps that result in varying exciton formations and optical properties. The binding energy and the spin singlet–triplet split of the exciton forming the lowest absorption peak generally decrease with bending curvatures. The large tunability of optical properties of bent MoS2 nanoribbons is promising and will find applications in tunable optoelectronic nanodevices.

A monolayer of CrI3 has an amazing ferromagnetic ground-state. In this work, we calculate band structures and magnetic moments of tensile-strained and bent zigzag CrI3 nanoribbons with density functional theory. The edge iodine atoms form flat low-lying conduction bands and couple with chromium atoms ferromagnetically, while the non-edge iodine atoms weakly couple antiferromagnetically. CrI3 nanoribbons have a nearly equal preference for the out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic moment configurations, slightly favoring the in-plane one. We also calculate optical absorption with many-body perturbation GW-BSE (Bethe-Salpeter equation) and investigate magneto-optical properties, including magnetic dichroism, Faraday and magneto-optical Kerr effects. The low-energy dark excitons are mainly from transitions between electrons and holes with unlike spins and are non-Frenkel-like, while the bright excitons have mixed spin configurations. Tensile strains and bending manifestly modulate the absorption spectra and magneto-optical properties of CrI3 nanoribbons within a technologically important photon energy-range of ~1.0-2.0 eV, suggesting a potential application in tunable magnetic optoelectronics., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Semilocal (SL) density functional approximations (DFAs) are widely applied but have limitations due to their inability to incorporate long-range van der Waals (vdW) interaction. Non-local functionals (vdW-DF, VV10, rVV10) or empirical methods (DFT+D, DFT+vdW, DFT+MBD) are used with SL-DFAs to account for such missing interaction. The physisorption of a molecule on the surface of the coinage metals (Cu, Ag, and Au) is a typical example of systems where vdW interaction is significant. However, it is difficult to find a general method that reasonably describes both adsorption energy and geometry of even the simple prototypes of cyclic and heterocyclic aromatic molecules like benzene (C6H6) and thiophene (C4H4S) respectively, with reasonable accuracy. In this work, we present an alternative scheme based on Zaremba-Kohn's theory, called DFT+vdW-dZK. We show that, unlike other popular methods, DFT+vdW-dZK and particularly SCAN+vdW-dZK gives an accurate description of the physisorption of a rare-gas atom (Xe) and two small albeit diverse prototype organic molecules on the (111) surfaces of the coinage metals.

We review the theory and application of adiabatic exchange-correlation (xc-) kernels for ab initio calculations of ground state energies and quasiparticle excitations within the frameworks of the adiabatic connection fluctuation dissipation theorem and Hedin's equations, respectively. Various different xc-kernels, which are all rooted in the homogeneous electron gas, are introduced but hereafter we focus on the specific class of renormalized adiabatic kernels, in particular the rALDA and rAPBE. The kernels drastically improve the description of short-range correlations as compared to the random phase approximation (RPA), resulting in significantly better correlation energies. This effect greatly reduces the reliance on error cancellations, which is essential in RPA, and systematically improves covalent bond energies while preserving the good performance of the RPA for dispersive interactions. For quasiparticle energies, the xc-kernels account for vertex corrections that are missing in the GW self-energy. In this context, we show that the short-range correlations mainly correct the absolute band positions while the band gap is less affected in agreement with the known good performance of GW for the latter. The renormalized xc-kernels offer a rigorous extension of the RPA and GW methods with clear improvements in terms of accuracy at little extra computational cost., Comment: Review article. 53 pages

Accurate modeling of electronic and structural properties of organic molecule-metal interfaces are challenging problems because of the complicated electronic distribution of molecule and screening of charges at the metallic surface. This is also the reason why the organic/inorganic system can be engineered for several applications by fine-tuning the metallic work function. Here, we use density-functional theory (DFT) calculations with different level of functional approximations for a systematic study of thiophene interacting with Copper surfaces. In particular, we considered adsorbed structures with the thiophene molecule seated on the top site, with the S atom of the molecule located on the top of a Cu atom. In this work, we find that the weak chemisorption hypothesis of thiophene binding on the copper surface is well justified by the two meta-GGAs-based approximations, SCAN and SCAN+rVV10. PBE-GGA and TM meta-GGA describe it as a physisorption phenomenon by significantly underestimating the adsorption energies. Calculated adsorption energy curves reveal that non-local dispersion interaction between the molecule and metallic surface predominantly controls the bonding mechanism and thus, modifies the copper's work function. Our results imply that semi-local functionals without any kind of van der Waals (vdW) correction can often misinterpret this as physisorption, while, a fortuitous error cancellation can give a right description of this adsorption picture for a wrong reason as in the case of SCAN. The calculated density of states of the adsorbed molecule shows that the long-range vdW correction of SCAN+rVV10 causes more than enough hybridization between the \textit{p} orbitals of S atom and the copper \textit{d}-bands and therefore overestimates the adsorption energies by an average of 16\%.

The random phase approximation (RPA) is exact for the exchange energy of a many-electron ground state, but RPA makes the correlation energy too negative by about 0.5 eV/electron. That large short-range error, which tends to cancel out of iso-electronic energy differences, is largely corrected by an exchange-correlation kernel, or (as in RPA+) by an additive local or semilocal correction. RPA+ is by construction exact for the homogeneous electron gas, and it is also accurate for the jellium surface. RPA+ often gives realistic total energies for atoms or solids in which spin-polarization corrections are absent or small. RPA and RPA+ also yield realistic singlet binding energy curves for H2 and N2, and thus RPA+ yields correct total energies even for spin-unpolarized atoms with fractional spins and strong correlation, as in stretched H2 or N2. However, RPA and RPA+ can be very wrong for spin-polarized one-electron systems (especially for stretched H2+), and also for the spin-polarization energies of atoms. The spin-polarization energy is often a small part of the total energy of an atom, but important for ionization energies, electron affinities, and the atomization energies of molecules. Here we propose a computationally efficient generalized RPA+ (gRPA+) that changes RPA+ only for spin-polarized systems by making gRPA+ exact for all one-electron densities, in the same simple semilocal way that the correlation energy densities of many meta-generalized gradent approximations are made self-correlation free. By construction, gRPA+ does not degrade the exact RPA+ description of jellium. gRPA+ is found to greatly improve upon RPA and RPA+ for the ionization energies and electron affinities of light atoms. Many versions of RPA with an approximate exchange-correlation kernel fail to be exact for all one-electron densities, and they can also be self-interaction corrected in this way.

Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) is a widely-used electronic structure theory for materials as well as molecules. DFT is needed especially for large systems, ab initio molecular dynamics, and high-throughput searches for functional materials. DFT's accuracy and computational efficiency are limited by the approximation to its exchange-correlation energy. Currently, the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) dominate materials computation mainly due to their efficiency. We show here that the recently developed non-empirical strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA improves significantly over LDA and the standard Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof GGA for geometries and energies of diversely-bonded materials (including covalent, metallic, ionic, hydrogen, and van der Waals bonds) at comparable efficiency. Thus SCAN may be useful even for soft matter. Often SCAN matches or improves upon the accuracy of a computationally expensive hybrid functional, at almost-GGA cost. SCAN is therefore expected to have a broad impact on materials science.

Standard spin-density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy of a many-electron ground state make serious self-interaction errors which can be corrected by the Perdew-Zunger self-interaction correction (SIC). We propose a size-extensive construction of SIC orbitals which, unlike earlier constructions, makes SIC computationally efficient, and a true spin-density functional. The SIC orbitals are constructed from a unitary transformation that is explicitly dependent on the non-interacting one-particle density matrix. When this SIC is applied to the local spin-density approximation, improvements are found for the atomization energies of molecules.

The semilocal meta generalized gradient approximation (MGGA) for the exchange-correlation functional of Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory can yield accurate ground-state energies simultaneously for atoms, molecules, surfaces, and solids, due to the inclusion of kinetic energy density as an input. We study for the first time the effect and importance of the dependence of MGGA on the kinetic energy density through the dimensionless inhomogeneity parameter, $\alpha$, that characterizes the extent of orbital overlap. This leads to a simple and wholly new MGGA exchange functional, which interpolates between the single-orbital regime, where $\alpha=0$, and the slowly varying density regime, where $\alpha \approx 1$, and then extrapolates to $\alpha \to \infty$. When combined with a variant of the Perdew-Burke-Erzerhof (PBE) GGA correlation, the resulting MGGA performs equally well for atoms, molecules, surfaces, and solids.

Successful modern generalized gradient approximations (GGA) are biased toward atomic energies. Restoration of the first-principles gradient expansion for the exchange energy over a wide range of density gradients eliminates this bias.
