The outcomes and safety of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) using testicular sperm have been controversial. We evaluated ICSI results, pregnancy outcomes, and neonatal health conditions using testicular sperm from patients with obstructive (OA) or nonobstructive (NOA) azoospermia. We further compared the ICSI outcomes after use of fresh versus cryopreserved testicular sperm from men with NOA. We included 314 men with NOA who underwent microdissection testicular sperm extraction (mTESE) and 303 with OA who underwent testicular sperm aspiration; both groups underwent ICSI. Therefore, 101 and 329 ICSI cycles were performed for mTESE and aspirated sperms, respectively. Furthermore, fresh and thawed embryos from both groups were transplanted to evaluate fertilization and pregnancy rates (NOA, 15 fresh and 123 thawed; OA, 59 fresh and 393 thawed). Finally, of the 101 ICSI cycles performed for NOA patients, 56 fresh-sperm cycles and 45 thawed-sperm cycles were performed to evaluate ICSI outcomes. Fertilization rates and two-pronuclear (2PN) fertilization rates were significantly lower in the NOA group than in the OA group. However, the 2PN cleavage rate, the high-quality embryo rate, the blastocyst formation rate, and the available blastocyst rate showed no significant intergroup differences. In addition, the pregnancy outcomes and neonatal health conditions were statistically similar. Finally, compared with thawed sperm, the fresh-sperm group had a higher 2PN fertilization rate and a higher high-quality embryo rate. However, blastocyst formation and available blastocyst rates were similar between the two groups. Patients with NOA achieved the same favorable results in embryo development, clinical pregnancy, and live birth capability as did OA patients. Neonatal conditions were not affected by type of azoospermia (NOA versus OA). For patients with NOA, fresh testicular sperm is superior to frozen-thawed testicular sperm in embryo development as evaluated at the cleavage stage, but we find no superiority evaluating at the stage of blastocyst formation.

Neuropathic pain is a disease that has become one of the major public health problems and a global burden. Nox4-induced oxidative stress can lead to ferroptosis and neuropathic pain. Methyl ferulic acid (MFA) can inhibit the Nox4-induced oxidative stress. This study aimed to estimate whether methyl ferulic acid alleviates neuropathic pain by inhibiting the expression of Nox4 and its induction of ferroptosis. Adult male Sprague‒Dawley rats were subjected to spared nerve injury (SNI) model to induce neuropathic pain. After the establishment of the model, methyl ferulic acid was given 14 days by gavage. Nox4 overexpression was induced by microinjection of the AAV-Nox4 RNAi vector. All groups measured paw mechanical withdrawal threshold (PMWT), paw thermal withdrawal latency (PTWL), and paw withdrawal cold duration (PWCD). The expression of Nox4, ACSL4, GPX4, and ROS was investigated by Western blot and immunofluorescence staining. The changes in iron content were detected by a tissue iron kit. The morphological changes in mitochondria were observed by transmission electron microscopy. In the SNI group, the paw mechanical withdrawal threshold, the paw withdrawal cold duration decreased, the paw thermal withdrawal latency did not change, the Nox4, ACSL4, ROS, and iron content increased, the GPX4 decreased, and the number of abnormal mitochondria increased. Methyl ferulic acid can increase PMWT and PWCD but does not affect PTWL. Methyl ferulic acid decreased Nox4, ACSL4, and ROS levels, and iron content increased GPX4 expression and decreased the number of abnormal mitochondria. By overexpressing Nox4, the PMWT, PWCD, and ferroptosis of rats were more severe than those of the SNI group, but they could be reversed after treatment with methyl ferulic acid. Methyl ferulic acid can alleviate neuropathic pain, which is related to Nox4-induced ferroptosis.

In this study, cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet was adopted to glass fibers surface modification with tetraethyl orthosilicate as a precursor. To enhance the interfacial bonding forces of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (GFRP) composites, SiOx nanoparticles were polymerized on the fiber surfaces. The effect of two factors (the distance between nozzle and fiber (D) and the treatment time (T)) on the interfacial bonding behavior of GFRP composites was studied. The modified fibers and composites properties, including surface topography, chemical composition, wettability and interfacial mechanical properties, were studied comprehensively. The optimal parameters were obtained at D = 17 mm and T = 12 s. Our results indicated that the interlaminar shear strength of GFRP composites was increased by 30.79% compared to control group. Further studies found that plasma treatment introduced larger surface roughness, surface energy and more oxygen-containing functional groups, which was responsible for the interlaminar shear strength improvement.

Purpose In recent years, personalized recommendations have facilitated easy access to users' personal information and historical interactions, thereby improving recommendation effectiveness. However, due to privacy risk concerns, it is essential to balance the accuracy of personalized recommendations with privacy protection. Accordingly, this paper aims to propose a neural graph collaborative filtering personalized recommendation framework based on federated transfer learning (FTL-NGCF), which achieves high-quality personalized recommendations with privacy protection. Design/methodology/approach FTL-NGCF uses a third-party server to coordinate local users to train the graph neural networks (GNN) model. Each user client integrates user–item interactions into the embedding and uploads the model parameters to a server. To prevent attacks during communication and thus promote privacy preservation, the authors introduce homomorphic encryption to ensure secure model aggregation between clients and the server. Findings Experiments on three real data sets (Gowalla, Yelp2018, Amazon-Book) show that FTL-NGCF improves the recommendation performance in terms of recall and NDCG, based on the increased consideration of privacy protection relative to original federated learning methods. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous research has considered federated transfer learning framework for GNN-based recommendation. It can be extended to other recommended applications while maintaining privacy protection.

Traditional acid-base leching technology is the primary technology to recycle silver from crystal silicon solar panels, which is fussy and often employs poisonous/harmful chemicals. In the present study, silver was easily recycled from photovoltaic panels in self-synthesized. Deep-Eutectic Solvents System (DESs) without pretreatments and the reaction system could be cyclically utilized. The leaching and precipitation rate can reach 99% under the optimized conditions. In addition, the kinetic results showed that the leaching of silver followed the classical shrinkage core model, in which chemical reaction was the rate-controlling step and the apparent activation energy for leaching process is 172.36 kJ·mol

The objective of this study was to investigate protective effects of tree peony seed protein hydrolysate by Alcalase (AL-TPSPH) on oxidative damage, inflammation and apoptosis using Cd-induced zebrafish embryos. Zebrafish embryos were treated with either Cd (2 μg/L) or AL-TPSPH (25, 50 and 75 μg/mL) alone or in combination of both from 4 to 144 h post fertilization (hpf). The effects of these treatments on developments, antioxidant parameters and mRNA expression of genes related to oxidative damage, inflammation and apoptosis were examined. The results showed that co-treatment with Cd and AL-TPSPH significantly increased hatching and survival rates and decreased malformation rates of zebrafish embryos compared with Cd treatment alone group (P 0.05). Cd-induced increase of MDA content, decreases of T-AOC content, GSH/GSSG ratio and activities of SOD, CAT and GPx in zebrafish embryos were modified upon treatment with AL-TPSPH. AL-TPSPH treatment significantly suppressed Cd-induced down-regulations of the antioxidant gene expressions (Mn-sod, Cat and GPx1a) in zebrafish embryos (P 0.05). AL-TPSPH also prevented Cd-induced up-regulations of pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α, IL-1β and IFN-γ) expressions. Moreover, AL-TPSPH inhibited Cd-induced up-regulations of pro-apoptotic genes (C-jun, Caspase-3 and Caspase-9) in zebrafish embryos. Collectively, these results indicated that AL-TPSPH could reduce Cd-induced oxidative damage, inflammation and apoptosis in zebrafish embryos, suggesting its future applications as functional food or pharmaceutical ingredient.

In the KEYNOTE-158 study (NCT02628067), pembrolizumab showed a high objective response rate and durable clinical benefit for patients with previously treated, unresectable/metastatic microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H)/mismatch repair‒deficient (dMMR) non-colorectal solid tumours. We present health-related quality of life (HRQoL) results from the MSI-H/dMMR population (cohort K).Eligible patients had previously treated MSI-H/dMMR advanced non-colorectal solid tumours, measurable disease per RECIST v1.1, and ECOG performance status ≤1. Patients received pembrolizumab 200 mg Q3W for 35 cycles (2 years). The EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and EQ-5D-3L were administered at baseline, at regular intervals throughout treatment, and 30 days after treatment discontinuation. Prespecified analyses (exploratory endpoints) included the magnitude of change from baseline to post-baseline timepoints in all patients and by the best overall response for QLQ-C30 global health status (GHS)/QoL, QLQ-C30 functional/symptom scales/items, and EQ-5D-3L visual analogue scale (VAS) score.At data cutoff (October 5, 2020), 351 patients were enrolled, of whom 311 and 315 completed baseline QLQ-C30 and EQ-5D-3L questionnaires, respectively. QLQ-C30 GHS/QoL scores improved from baseline to week 9 (mean [95% CI] change, 3.07 [0.19-5.94]), then remained stable or improved by week 111, with greater improvements observed in patients with a best response of complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) (10.85 [6.36-15.35]). Patients with CR/PR showed improvements in physical (5.58 [1.91-9.25]), role (9.88 [3.80-15.97]), emotional (5.62 [1.56-9.68]), and social (8.33 [2.70-13.97]) functioning, and stable cognitive functioning (1.74 [-1.45 to 4.94]).Pembrolizumab generally improved or preserved HRQoL in patients with previously treated MSI-H/dMMR advanced non-colorectal solid tumours.

Neodymium (Nd) isotopes have been utilized as a tracer of water mass source in the modern ocean and in palaeoceanographic studies, though the oceanic cycling of Nd is not yet fully constrained. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of processes that occur near the seawater – sediment interface in altering the Nd isotopic composition of bottom waters. The two major observed processes “boundary exchange” and “benthic flux” have been suggested as playing an important role in setting water mass compositions, however, more studies are needed to constrain their chemical mechanism and the extent to which these processes set the composition of deep waters. The Antarctic continental margin is an important place to study these processes because Antarctic-sourced waters dominate the Southern Ocean and ventilate the global deep ocean. This study is the first to measure and compare seawater, porewater and sediment data from along the margin of Antarctica to examine the nature of potential boundary processes. We show that a process similar to boundary exchange seems to be occurring within porewaters, modifying porewater chemistry by shifting its Nd isotopic ratios to more radiogenic values without significantly increasing the concentration of dissolved Nd. We hypothesize that this shift results from partial dissolution of radiogenic detrital particles, such as smectite, amphibole and/or volcanic glass, while re-scavenging maintains low Nd concentrations. We infer the existence of benthic flux of porewaters to deep waters by examining chemical gradients in porewaters and show that it is much lower on the Antarctic Margin compared to other studies. Benthic flux appears to be slightly enhanced along the Antarctic Peninsula than in the Bellingshausen Sea due to partial degradation of organic matter and associated dissolution of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides. Taken together, boundary processes do not significantly change the Nd isotopic composition of Antarctic margin seawater because while the porewaters have an altered Nd isotopic composition the Nd concentration of these porewaters is low compared to other settings.

Low-temperature plasma is a green and high efficiency technology for chemical warfare agents (CWAs) decontamination. However, traditional plasma devices suffer from the problems of high power composition and large power supply size, which limit their practical applications. In this paper, a self-driven microplasma decontamination system induced by dielectric-dielectric rotary triboelectric nanogenerator (dd-rTENG) was innovatively proposed for the decontamination of CWAs simulants. Microplasma was characterized by electrical measurements, optical emission spectrum and ozone concentration detection. With output voltage of -3460 V, the dd-rTENG can successfully excite microplasma in air. The reactive species such as OH, O(1D), Hα, and O3 were detected. The decontamination rate of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES) reached 100 % within 3 min plasma treatment. While the decontamination rate of malathion and dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) reached 65.92 % and 60.88 % after 7 min plasma treatment, respectively. In addition, the decontamination rates gradually decreased with the increasing of simulants concentration. The typical products were identified and analyzed. This study demonstrates the broad-spectrum and feasibility of the dd-rTENG-microplasma for CWAs elimination, which provides significant guidance for their practical applications in the future.

The development of surface modification technology for temperature sensitive fibers has been a huge challenge. In this work, a novel technique based on cold plasma treatment was developed for anti-bacterial Polypropylene (PP) fibers preparation. The results showed that plasma treatment introduced rough surface and polar groups, which acted as the anchor point and initiators for DADMAC graft-polymerization. The fabricated PP membranes presented a high bacterial sterilization rate, as well as excellent adhesion force and washing durability. After ultrasonic for 30 min, the physical coating sample has lost anti-bacterial effect, while plasma grafted sample still showed a sterilization rate of 91.67%. This work provided a clean and novel DADMAC grafting method and it is also applicable for anti-bacterial material fabrication.

The latest research shows that calcium signals can provide a new signal source for brain-machine interfaces (BMI). However, it remains a question whether the calcium signals from layer 2/3 motor cortex can be used for continuous neural decoding. And how they are involved in movement coding is also worth investigating. Here we collect the somatic signals in M1 layer 2/3 while mice performed a lever-press task under the one-photon imaging. We first present the potential of somatic calcium signals from layer 2/3 in continuous neural decoding through an improved recurrent neural network. Layer 2/3 neurons exhibit three types of calcium dynamics with distinct spatiotemporal coding patterns involved in the movement. Pre-pressing and pressing neurons enable sparse coding of movement through complementary spatiotemporal information. While post-pressing neurons predict the lever movement most accurately through the calcium dynamics with higher fidelity. These results demonstrate the capability of calcium signals from layer 2/3 neurons as a motor BMI driver and underscore their diversity in motor coding, opening a new avenue for studying the motor cortex and designing optical BMIs.

Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease with a dismal 5-year survival rate of 50 values. In a Panc-1 xenograft model, phospho-aspirin, at a dose of 100 mg/kg/d 5 times per week for 30 days, reduced tumor growth by 78% (P < 0.01 vs. vehicle control). Furthermore, phospho-aspirin prevented pancreatitis-accelerated acinar-to-ductal metaplasia in mice with activated Kras. In p48-Cre;KrasG12D mice, cerulein treatment (6 hourly injections two times per week for 3 weeks) led to a significant increase in ductal metaplasia, replacing the majority of the exocrine compartment. Administration of phospho-aspirin 100 mg/kg/day five times per week for 21 days (starting on the first day of cerulein injection) inhibited the acinar-to-ductal metaplasia, reducing it by 87% (P < 0.01, vs. cerulein-treated control). Phospho-aspirin appeared to be safe, with the animals showing no signs of toxicity during treatment. Mechanistically, phospho-aspirin inhibited EGFR activation in pancreatic cancer, an effect consistently observed in pancreatic cancer cells, primary acinar explants and in vivo. In conclusion, our findings indicate that phospho-aspirin has strong anticancer efficacy in preclinical models of pancreatic cancer, warranting its further evaluation. Purpose: The PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway is aberrantly activated in many cancers. Combining ridaforolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, with MK-2206, an Akt inhibitor, may more completely block the PI3K pathway and inhibit tumor growth.Experimental Design: This phase I study assessed dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) and maximum tolerated dose (MTD) for the combination of oral ridaforolimus plus oral MK-2206 in patients with advanced solid tumors. Efficacy was evaluated in patients with biomarker-identified estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer (low RAS gene signature and high Ki67 index) or castration-resistant prostate cancer (PTEN deficiency) with PI3K pathway addiction.Results: Thirty-five patients were enrolled: 11 patients in part A (three breast cancer) and 24 biomarker-eligible patients in part B (16 breast cancer, eight prostate cancer). One patient with breast cancer from part A was also found to be biomarker-eligible when tested after she had clinical response. The MTD was 10 mg/d ridaforolimus 5 d/wk + 90 mg/wk MK-2206; 1 of 17 patients experienced DLT (grade 3 rash) at this dose. The most common adverse events at MTD were rash (44.4%), stomatitis (38.9%), diarrhea (27.8%), and decreased appetite (27.8%). By investigator assessment, 2 of 16 (12.5%) evaluable patients with breast cancer had partial response; by central assessment, 2 of 14 (14.3%) evaluable patients had complete response. Two patients had durable stable disease (SD) for 416 and 285 days, respectively. No patients with prostate cancer responded; one patient had SD for ≥6 months.Conclusions: Combination ridaforolimus and MK-2206 showed promising activity and good tolerability in heavily pretreated patients with hormone-positive and -negative breast cancer exhibiting PI3K pathway dependence. Supplemental Results. Using a custom designed Affymetrix microarray, we describe a RAS pathway activation signature consisting of 147 gene transcripts identified by combining data from fresh-frozen tissue samples, cell lines, and the literature.

Current technologies for removal of Cr(VI) are generally fit for acidic wastewater. In this study, a new ferrite process for removal and recycling of Cr(VI) from alkaline wastewater to produce the valuable chromium ferrite has been developed. The results show that this new ferrite method is a one-step process which can be divided into two successive reactions including Cr(VI) reduction to form coprecipitation (Cr0.25Fe0.75(OH)3) and subsequently magnetic conversion of Cr0.25Fe0.75(OH)3 induced by Fe2+ under the same alkaline condition. The total Fe/Cr mole ratio of 5:1 is at least required for the chromium ferrite transformation. Increasing temperature and pH can enhance the interaction of Fe2+ with Cr0.25Fe0.75(OH)3 and further promote the formation of chromium ferrite, while suppressing the generation of nonmagnetic by-product goethite. Almost pure chromium ferrite is formed under proposed optimum conditions (Fe/Cr = 7:1, 65 °C and pH of 9) with Cr(VI) removal ratio around 100%. The Cr(VI) remained in the filtrate can be reduced to 0.01 mg/L which is much lower than the limits concentration for surface water (≤0.05 mg/L). Here, a novel synthetic route of ceria-based nanocatalysts with high catalytic activity and excellent stability was constructed by utilizing function groups from surface ligands. The surface of ceria nanorods were functionalized with 3, 4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid (3,4-DHCA) to form self-assembled monolayer on their surfaces. Owing to the COO- group on the tail of ligands, the ceria nanorods are negatively charged with good colloidal stability in water. Then Cu2+ were added to coordinate with the COO- group on the tail of ligands to form stable chelating complexes. After calcination, the Cu atoms are firmly anchored onto the surface of ceria nanorods with high dispersibility. Moreover, the Cu2+ coordinated ceria nanorods could adsorb PdCl42- anion by electrostatic forces onto coordinated copper sites. After calcination, Pd-Cu/CeO2 nanocatalysts with enhanced CO oxidation catalytic performance were obtained. This coordination strategy is further applied to other metal species such as Fe, Co, Ni, which provides great strategy for catalysts preparation.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major bacterial pathogen causing nosocomial infections and accounts for morbidity and mortality among patients with cystic fibrosis. An accurate, sensitive, and rapid method to detect P. aeruginosa is critical for the early control of infection and patient management. In this study, we established a P. aeruginosa clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats testing in one pot (CRISPR-top) assay which detected P. aeruginosa with one fluid-handling step in one tube. The reaction was performed isothermally within 1 h; thus, specific instruments were not required. The optimal reaction conditions of this assay were determined to be a temperature of 55°C; working concentrations of 1 μM for the forward inner primer and backward inner primer, 0.5 μM for the loop forward primer and loop backward primer, and 0.25 μM for the forward outer primer and backward outer primer; as well as a 2 μM concentration single-stranded DNA reporter molecules. In terms of specificity, our assay showed 100% inclusivity and exclusivity among 48 strains, including 15 P. aeruginosa clinical isolates and 33 non-P. aeruginosa strains. The limit of detection of our method was 10 copies per reaction mixture. Forty-six human sputum specimens from patients with respiratory symptoms were tested. Using the results of quantitative real-time PCR as the gold standard, our method showed 85.3% (29/34) sensitivity, 100% (12/12) specificity, a positive predictive value of 100% (29/29), and a negative predictive value of 70.6% (12/17). In summary, the P. aeruginosa CRISPR-top assay developed in the present study is a high-efficiency alternative tool for the accurate and rapid detection of P. aeruginosa, especially in resource-limited settings.

Significant gaps in our understanding of the oceanic cycling of neodymium (Nd) and the other rare earth elements (REEs) remain despite decades of research. One important observation which has not been adequately explained is that the concentration of dissolved Nd typically increases with depth, similar to nutrient profiles, while Nd isotopes appear to reflect conservative water mass mixing in the intermediate and deep ocean; this has been termed the “Nd paradox”. Here we present a detailed study of the dissolved Nd isotopic composition across a section at 40°S in the South Atlantic, collected by UK GEOTRACES cruise (section GA10). The South Atlantic represents a natural laboratory for our understanding of spatial controls on ocean geochemistry, because of the large variability of inputs, spatial differences in particulate cycling, and horizontal advection and mixing at depth between major northern- and southern-sourced water masses. This variability has also made the South Atlantic a critical region subject to intense investigations that aim at reconstructing past changes in ocean processes, such as changes in biological productivity and deep ocean circulation. Our Nd isotope results from the GA10 section provide observational data show the signal of water mass mixing and reversible scavenging. In the surface ocean (0–600 m), Nd isotopic compositions are distinct between different surface ocean currents and spatially can be tied to various continental sources. In the intermediate ocean (600–2500 m), the vertical Nd isotope distribution exhibits distinct signals of different water masses by horizontal advection, including upper North Atlantic Deep Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water formed in the Atlantic Ocean or the Indian Ocean. The Nd isotope distribution also reflects influence of reversible scavenging that smears the signals downwards in the water column (i.e., offset to more radiogenic values). In the deep ocean below 2500 m, Nd isotope distribution largely follows conservative water mass mixing model. Nd concentration in the deep ocean, however, deviates from conservative mixing and increases constantly with depth. We also observe that Nd isotopes appear to be shifted towards the composition of overlying water masses. These observations suggest that reversible scavenging of Nd onto organic and other types of particles is a major vertical process throughout the water column. We also suggest that this process can resolve the “Nd paradox” of decoupling of Nd concentration and isotopic composition due to mixing dynamics. Because abyssal water masses already have a high Nd concentration, a given amount of Nd added from the vertical process has less of an effect on Nd isotopic compositions in deep water masses than it does for intermediate water masses which have comparatively low Nd concentration.

Background Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) is an important factor affecting the prognosis of patients with ischemic stroke. This study aimed to observe whether isoflurane posttreatment enhances autophagy after focal CIRI in rats by activating the AMPK/ULK1 signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting NLRP3 inflammation. The body releases inflammatory factors to reduce inflammation, thereby reducing neurological damage and improving cognitive and memory functions. Background Pregnancy is a dynamic process associated with significant physiological changes in the cardiovascular system. It is well known that during pregnancy, the placenta secretes a variety of molecular signals, including of exosomes into the maternal circulation to adapt to increased blood volume and maintain blood pressure at normotensive levels. Results In the present study, we compared the effects of exosomes derived from peripheral blood serum of nonpregnant women (NP-Exo) and normal pregnant women (P-Exo) on endothelial cell function. We also analyzed the proteomic profiles of these two groups of exosomes and the molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of exosome cargoes on maternal vascular function. We found that P-Exo was positively involved in regulating the function of maternal vascular endothelial cells, promoting nitric oxide (NO) release and maintaining maternal blood pressure at normal levels. Furtherly, we revealed that trophoblast-derived pregnancy-specific beta-1-glycoprotein 1 (PSG1)-enriched exosomes treatment induced promotion of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) proliferation and migration, as well as the release of NO. Moreover, we observed that treating mice with P-Exo induced the activation of renin-angiotensin system, although there was no significant change in blood pressure in mice. Conclusions These results strongly suggested that PSG1-enriched exosomes derived from maternal peripheral blood regulate the function of vascular endothelial cells and plays an important role in regulating maternal blood pressure during pregnancy.

Thermal treatment has been proved as an efficient and promising method for LCD panel scraps pre-treatment and resource recycling. However, undesirable pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals tend to occur during the thermal treatment. To better understand the metals migration behavior and to illustrate the interaction effect between organics and metals, effect of the polarizer on the metals (Cr, In, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe) migration and transformation behaviors was analyzed in this study. Results showed that polarizer, the main organic component in LCD panel, could enhance the metals migration behavior during the thermal treatment and also affect the metals speciation distribution in solid residue. The enhancement effect on metals migration rate was mainly deduced by the gas/volatile compounds from polarizer decomposition, while the metals speciation distribution in solid residue was mainly affected by the solid product from polarizer decomposition. The polarizer also showed increase effect on the potential risk of In, Cu and decrease effect on Fe in solid residue. The results suggest that reducing the organics content or adding solid carbon in treatment system would helpful to decrease the metals migration during thermal treatment process of discarded LCD panels.

Previous literature have shown that warming temperatures due to climate change are likely to decrease mean crop yields and increase crop yield risk. However, there is limited understanding of how crop insurance participation can potentially affect the adverse crop yield impacts of warming (or extreme heat). This study specifically examines whether crop insurance participation influences the impact of extreme heat on yield risk (i.e. yield variance, skewness and kurtosis). We utilise a parametric moment-based method and county-level panel data to evaluate how crop insurance participation affects the relationship between warming temperatures and the moments of crop yield distributions. Our results indicate that the yield risk increasing effect of warming is further magnified under high levels of crop insurance participation. This result still holds even when allowing for long-run adaptation (although the crop insurance effect tends to be weaker in this case). In general, our results indicate that not only does crop insurance participation adversely impact mean yields under climate change, it also influences the extent by which warming affects yield variability over time. This supports the notion that crop insurance can serve as a disincentive for climate change adaptation in agriculture.

This study explores how higher temperatures influence corn yield response to planting density. Using 1990–2010 field trial data from Wisconsin and econometric models with a variety of specifications, we find that higher temperatures reduce the yield benefits of increasing planting density. However, these adverse high-temperature effects are smaller for genetically modified corn varieties, especially those with rootworm-resistant traits. Consistent with previous studies, these results support the notion that varietal improvements through genetic modification may have paved the way for higher planting densities in US corn production. Moreover, our results imply that expected in-season temperatures are important considerations when making planting density decisions.

A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in atmospheric pressure air was excited by a high-voltage pulse power supply. Capacitors with different capacitance were connected in the discharge circuit and their effects on discharge power calculation were evaluated. The average power deposited into the discharge were calculated by three different methods: 1) Lissajous figure; 2) product of voltage and current; and 3) watt-hour meter. Further studies showed that the capacitor with 10 nF was suitable for power calculation. At applied voltage of 9 kV, discharge power calculated by three methods were similar (around 25–27 W). However, with the increase of applied voltage, the discharge power obtained by product of voltage and current was far beyond the real value. Lissajous method has proven more appreciable for discharge power calculation in a pulsed plasma at high voltage. This study provides a practical guide for power calculation in a pulsed-driven DBD system.

As green solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) are quite suitable for the absorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and its homologues. However, solvent selection is the key to the VOC absorption process. In the present study, a rapid solvent screening tool, Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS), was used to predict the solubility of toluene in 816 ILs. The effects of four structure characters, namely, the type and alkyl chain length of the cations and anions on the solubility of toluene were discussed. The following conclusions were drawn from the results: (1) ILs with pyrrolidinium-based cations showed better solubility than pyridinium- and imidazolium-based ones. (2) The solubility of toluene in PF6-based ILs increased with the increasing alkyl chain length, while its solubility in Ac-based ILs exhibited the opposite trend. (3) Toluene showed greater solubility in Cl-based ILs than those based on other anions. (4) The solubility of toluene increased with the anion alkyl chain length. Ac-based ILs were chosen as the most promising potential solvents, and further studied to determine the relationship between various interaction energy parameters and toluene solubility. The results showed that the misfit energy played a dominant role during the absorption process. Furthermore, several ILs were selected for experimental verification of the predicted solubility behavior using liquid and gaseous toluene. The results demonstrated that COSMO-RS could be used to semi-quantitatively and qualitatively predict the solubility of toluene, and this model had promising prospects in screening ILs for VOCs absorption. In summary, this study provided a fundamental basis and practical data for the control and treatment of VOCs.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the influences of supplemental lysophospholipids (LPL) on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and fecal bacterial profile, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) of beef cattle. Thirty-six Angus beef cattle [565 ± 10.25 kg body weight (BW)] were grouped by BW and age, and randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatment groups: (1) control (CON, basal diet); (2) LLPL [CON supplemented with 0.5 g/kg LPL, dry matter (DM) basis]; and (3) HLPL (CON supplemented with 0.75 g/kg, DM basis). The Angus cattle were fed a total mixed ration that consisted of 25% roughage and 75% concentrate (dry matter [DM] basis). The results reveal that LPL inclusion linearly increased the average daily gain (P = 0.02) and the feed efficiency (ADG/feed intake, P = 0.02), while quadratically increasing the final weight (P = 0.02) of the beef cattle. Compared with CON, the total tract digestibilities of DM (P < 0.01), ether extract (P = 0.04) and crude protein (P < 0.01) were increased with LPL supplementation. At the phylum-level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes (P = 0.05) and ratio of Firmicutes: Bacteroidetes (P = 0.04) were linearly increased, while the relative abundances of Bacteroidetes (P = 0.04) and Proteobacteria (P < 0.01) were linearly decreased with increasing LPL inclusion. At the genus-level, the relative abundances of Clostridium (P < 0.01) and Roseburia (P < 0.01) were quadratically increased, and the relative abundances of Ruminococcus was linearly increased (P < 0.01) with LPL supplementation. Additionally, increasing the dose of LPL in diets linearly increased the molar proportion of butyrate (P < 0.01) and total SCFAs (P = 0.01) concentrations. A conclusion was drawn that, as a promising feed additive, LPL promoted growth performance and nutrient digestibility, which may be associated with the change of fecal microbiome and SCFAs.

Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) is one of the most common pathogens causing nosocomial infection. A rapid, accurate, and convenient detection method is required for early diagnosis and directed therapy of K. pneumoniae infection. CRISPR-top (CRISPR-mediated testing in one pot) is a LAMP-CRISPR-based nucleic acid detection platform, which integrates target preamplification with CRISPR/Cas12b-based detection into a one-pot reaction mixture, performed at a constant temperature. In this study, we established the K. pneumoniae CRISPR-top assay to precisely identify K. pneumoniae at 56°C within 60 min. The reaction mixture with 0.53 μM (each) FIP and BIP, 0.27 μM LF, 0.13 μM (each) F3 and B3, and 2 μM ssDNA fluorescence probe was determined as the optimal reaction system of our assay.
