580 Plants (Botany) - Abstract
This contribution aims to provide an updated and concise overview of the main events and developments characterising the interaction between human communities and their environment in Lombardy (Northern Italy) between the Middle Paleolithic and the Late Iron Age (60,000 to 2,100 years cal BP). Within the above defined geographic and chronological context, our main goal is to highlight and summarise the role of natural factors in the development of human history, both over the long durée and within defined periods. We provide a short history of the ecosystems and socio-ecological systems in Lombardy, for which – thanks to the contribution of several research groups and scholars active in the region – we analyse specific key issues. These analyses are facilitated by chronostratigraphic tables and GIS-based cartography, and introduced by an overview of the climatic changes that affected Alpine and Po Plain landscapes across the Last Glaciation and subsequent Late Glacial times, up to the shortlasting events which influenced the development of Holocene civilisations. The structure and significance of the issues introduced in the overview will be discussed by individual research groups working within this study area

Centro Oceanográfico de Vigo ,Medio Marino - Abstract
The pigment composition of 18 species (51 strains) of the pennate diatom Pseudo-nitzschia was examined using HPLC. The carotenoid composition was typical for diatoms, with fucoxanthin (the major xanthophyll), diadinoxanthin, diatoxanthin, and β,β-carotene. However, a diverse array of chl c pigments was observed in the studied strains. All Pseudo-nitzschia strains contained chl a and chl c2, traces of Mg-2,4-divinyl phaeoporphyrin a5 monomethyl ester (MgDVP), and traces of a chl c2–like pigment originally found in the haptophyte Pavlova gyrans. The distribution of chl c1 and chl c3 was variable among species (present in seven and 14 species, respectively). Based on chl c distribution, three major pigment types were defined: type 1 (chl c1 + c2, four species: P. australis, P. brasiliana, P. multiseries, and P. seriata), type 2 (chl c1 + c2 + c3, three species: P. fraudulenta, P. multistriata, and P. pungens), and type 3 (chl c2 + c3, 11 species: P. arenysensis, P. calliantha, P. cuspidata, P. decipiens, P. delicatissima, P. galaxiae, P. mannii, P. pseudodelicatissima, P. subcurvata, P. cf. subpacifica, and a novel Pseudo-nitzschia species). Type 1 and 2 species also shared the absence of a particular morphological character, the central nodule in the raphe, with the only exception of P. fraudulenta. The implications of such pigment diversity in chemotaxonomy, HAB monitoring, ecology, and phylogeny of Pseudo-nitzschia species are discussed., Sí

- Abstract
In the present thesis, the factors influencing population’s genetic structure in the clonal marine angiosperm Cymodocea nodosa have been investigated. C. nodosa is a dioecious seagrass, exhibiting both vegetative propagation and sexual reproduction. Seed dispersal is expected to be extremely restricted. I selected seven microsatellite loci through genomic library screening to investigate the relative effects of sexual and clonal reproduction on the genetic diversity and structure in a Cymodocea nodosa population from the Gulf of Naples (Italy). High clonal diversity and genet density were found. Autocorrelation analyses confirmed the expectations of very restricted seed dispersal (observed dispersal range 1-21m) in this species. The effect of mating system on genetic structure were investigated comparing the clonal architectures of the dioecious Cymodocea nodosa and monoecious Zostera noltii. An intermingled configuration of genets has been found in the dioecious Cymodocea nodosa while a clumped distribution of clones in the hermaphroditic Zostera noltii has been observed. I hypothesise that the possibility of reduction in the seed-set would drive genet distribution. On a phylogeographic spatial scale, the existence of population differentiation and of genetic disjunction within the Mediterranean Sea was investigated in Cymodocea nodosa. Populations displayed a wide variability in clonal diversity. A Bayesian analysis revealed that “supra-population” panmictic units are present in the Mediterranean basin. Genetic substructure from a phylogeographic tree coincided with major geographical boundaries within the Mediterranean basin. In general, in Cymodocea nodosa, seed dispersal is poor at the within-population level, but long-range dispersal events can occur, allowing high levels of gene flow at a phylogeographic scale. The observed “guerrilla” clonal architecture allows to reduce the effect of genetic identity on the genetic structure of the population, but it is also advantageous by allowing pollen availability and therefore a sufficient seed-set in this dioecious species.

Physiological processes, as aerobic metabolism and inflammatory response, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that may induce cellular injury when their amount is increased and antioxidant defense mechanisms are overwhelmed. Also, ROS are generated following UV skin irradiation able to deplete the natural antioxidant defenses in the skin. The increase in exposure to UV may lead to photoaging and precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis). New antioxidant strategies in the prevention and therapy of skin lesions are urgently needed. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant efficacy of a recombinant form of human manganese superoxide dismutase able to inhibit reactive oxygen species pro- duction in some patients affected by severe photoaging and actinic keratosis
