Long-lasting eruptions are of complex characterization and are typically associated with challenging risk assessment and crisis management due to the usual occurrence of multiple interacting hazards evolving at different temporal and spatial scales (e.g., lava, tephra, and gas). The 2021 Tajogaite eruption of Cumbre Vieja (La Palma) demonstrated how even hybrid events that are mostly effusive can be associated with widespread and impacting tephra deposits as a result of a complex interplay among gas flux, conduit geometry, and magma feeding rate. In this novel study, direct observations, syn-eruptive and post-eruptive sampling, and statistical analysis of pulsatory activity have been combined to provide new insights into eruption dynamics. They show how rapid gas segregation and high magma ascent rate modulated the gas flux at multiple vents, resulting in short-time fluctuations among the different explosive styles (ash-poor gas puffing, Strombolian, violent Strombolian, and lava fountaining) and unsteady tephra ground accumulation. Various size-selective sedimentation processes were also observed, including particle aggregation and ash fingers, which have impacted the overall tephra dispersal. In fact, even though both local and total grainsize distributions of selected layers, units, and of the whole tephra blanket are unimodal with a low fine-ash content, grainsize analysis of 154 samples suggests no correlation of particles

Rapid rise of population migration is a defining feature of the 21st century due to the impact of climate change, political instability, and socioeconomic downturn. Over the last decade, an increasing number of migrant peoples travel across the Americas to reach the United States seeking asylum or cross the border undocumented in search of economic opportunities. In this journey, migrant people experience violations of their human rights, hunger, illness, violence and have limited access to medical care. In the ‘Divine Comedy’, the Italian poet Dante Alighieri depicts his allegorical pilgrimage across Hell and Purgatory to reach Paradise. More than 700 years after its publication, Dante's poem speaks to the present time and the perilious journey of migrant peoples to reach safehavens. By exploring the depths and heights of the human condition, Dante's struggles resonate with the multiple barriers and the unfathomable experiences faced by migrant peoples in transit across South, Central, and North America to reach the United States. Ensuring the safety of migrant peoples across the Americas and elsewhere, and attending to their health needs during their migratory paths represent modern priorities to reduce social injustices and achieving health equity. Background Currently, there is limited research on the prognostic value of NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) as a biomarker in COVID-19. We proposed the a priori hypothesis that an elevated NT-proBNP concentration at admission is associated with increased in-hospital mortality. Methods and Results In this prospective, observational cohort study of the American Heart Association's COVID-19 Cardiovascular Disease Registry, 4675 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 were divided into normal and elevated NT-proBNP cohorts by standard age-adjusted heart failure thresholds, as well as separated by quintiles. Background Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States, and little is known about how Hispanic ethnic population density impacts cardiovascular disease ( CVD ) mortality. Methods and Results We examined county-level deaths for Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites from 2003 to 2012 using data from the National Center for Health Statistics' Multiple Cause of Death mortality files. Counties with more than 20 Hispanic deaths (n=715) were included in the analyses. CVD deaths were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), I00 to I78, and population estimates were calculated using linear interpolation from 2000 and 2010 census data. Multivariate linear regression was used to examine the association of Hispanic ethnic density with Hispanic and non-Hispanic white age-adjusted CVD mortality rates. County-level age-adjusted CVD mortality rates were adjusted for county-level demographic, socioeconomic, and healthcare factors. There were a total of 4 769 040 deaths among Hispanics (n=382 416) and non-Hispanic whites (n=4 386 624). Overall, cardiovascular age-adjusted mortality rates were higher among non-Hispanic whites compared with Hispanics (244.8 versus 189.0 per 100 000). Hispanic density ranged from 1% to 96% in each county. Counties in the highest compared with lowest category of Hispanic density had 60% higher Hispanic mortality (215.3 versus 134.2 per 100 000 population). In linear regression models, after adjusting for county-level demographic, socioeconomic, and healthcare factors, increasing Hispanic ethnic density remained strongly associated with mortality for Hispanics but not for non-Hispanic whites. Conclusions CVD mortality is higher in counties with higher Hispanic ethnic density. County-level characteristics do not fully explain the higher CVD mortality among Hispanics in ethnically concentrated counties.

Resumen: En este trabajo se ha analizado la situacion actual y las persepctivas futuras de diferentes lineas de ayudas agroambientales incluidas dentro dentro del "segundo pilar" de la Politica Agraria Comun. Por medio de las ayudas agroambientales se persingue influir de manera significativa sobre la conservacion del patrimonio natural y paisajistico de las zonas rurales de la Union Europea. La conservacion de dichos habitats y paisajes precisa de la presencia y actividad humana en las zonas rurales, y muy especialmente de la continuidad de una actividad ganadera extensiva que aproveche los recursos forrajeros (praderas de propiedad privada y pastos comunales) disponibles. para la elaboracion de este estudio se han utilizado datos procedentes de encuestas personales realizadas a ganaderos beneficiarios de las lineas de ayudas agroambientales mas relevantes para Catabria durantes el periodo 2007-2013. En la fase de diseno de los cuestionarios y en la de analisis de los resultados obtenidos se ha combinado el metodo Delphi con la Valoracion Contingente. En base a los resultados obtenidos, podemos afirmar que existe margen todavia para plantear modicaciones en los requisitos, cuantias y formas de implementacion de las ayudas acutales que contribuyan a incrementar su eficiencia potenciales. In this paper we analyse the current situation and the future perspectives of alternative agrienvironmental schemes included in the "second pillar" of the Common Agricultural Policy. Agri-environmental schemes aim at fostering the preservation of natural heritage and traditional landscapes in the rural areas of the European Union. Conservation of such habitats and landscapes is directly dependent on the presence of human activity in the rural areas and, more precisely, on the continuity of extensive farming practices on grasslands and the common-pool grazing spots in the rural territory. In this study, in-person interviews with cattle breeders who benefit from the two main agri-environmental schemes from the period 2008-2013 in Cantabria were undertaken. Throughout the design and implementation stages of the study, Delphi and Contingent Valuation methods have been combined. According to the results, there is still margin to undertake modifications on the requisites, payments and design of the current schemes so as to improve their potential efficacy and efficiency.

There is a well-established link between dyslipidemia and cardiovascular events, although this risk is modified by age. Little is known about how treatment of dyslipidemia and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol goal attainment differ between older and younger patients. We obtained clinical data from 9,926 dyslipidemic patients across 9 countries in North and Latin America, Europe, and Asia from 2006 through 2007.
