Search

Measurements of the angular momentum (spin) of astrophysical black holes are extremely important, as they provide information on the black hole formation and evolution. We present simulated observations of a X-ray binary system with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), with the aim to study the robustness of black hole spin and geometry measurements using X-ray polarimetry. As a representative example, we used the parameters of GRS 1915+105 in its former unobscured, soft state. In order to simulate the polarization properties, we modeled the source emission with a multicolor blackbody accounting for thermal radiation from the accretion disk, including returning radiation. Our analysis shows that the polarimetric observations in the X-ray waveband will be able to estimate both spin and inclination of the system with a good precision (without returning radiation we obtained for the lowest spin $\Delta a \leq 0.4$ (0.4/0.998 $\sim$ 40%) for spin and $\Delta i \leq 30^\circ$ (30$^\circ$/70$^\circ$ $\sim$ 43%) for inclination, while for the higher spin values we obtained $\Delta a \leq 0.12$ ($\sim$ 12%) for spin and $\Delta i \leq 20^\circ$ ($ \sim $ 29%) for inclination, within 1$ \sigma $ errors). When focusing on the case of returning radiation and treating inclination as a known parameter, we were able to successfully reconstruct spin and disk albedo in $\Delta a \leq 0.15$ ($\sim$ 15%) interval and $\Delta$ albedo $\leq 0.45$ (45%) intervals within 1$ \sigma $ errors. We conclude that X-ray polarimetry will be a useful tool to constrain black hole spins, in addition to timing and spectral-fitting methods., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

In an X-ray pulsar, a neutron star accretes matter from a stellar companion through an accretion disk. The high magnetic field of the rotating neutron star disrupts the inner edge of the disc, funneling the gas to flow onto the magnetic poles on its surface. Hercules X-1 is in many ways the prototypical X-ray pulsar; it shows persistent X-ray emission and it resides with its companion HZ Her, a two-solar-mass star, at about 7~kpc from Earth1. Its emission varies on three distinct timescales2 the neutron star rotates every 1.2~seconds, it is eclipsed by its companion each 1.7~days, and the system exhibits a superorbital period of 35~days which has remained remarkably stable since its discovery3. Several lines of evidence point to the source of this variation as the precession of the accretion disc4,5, the precession of the neutron star6,7 or both8. Despite the many hints over the past fifty years, the precession of the neutron star itself has yet not been confirmed or refuted. We here present X-ray polarization measurements with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer9 (IXPE) which probe the spin geometry of the neutron star. These observations provide direct evidence that the 35-day-period is set by the free precession of the neutron star crust, which has the important implication that its moment of inertia eigenvalues differ fractionally by a few parts per ten million10. Furthermore, we find indications that the basic spin geometry of the neutron star is altered by torques on timescale of a few hundred days.

We report the results of new XMM-Newton observations of the middle-aged ($\sim$10$^5$ yr) radio pulsar PSR J1740+1000 carried out in 2017-2018. These long pointings ($\sim$530 ks) show that the non-thermal emission, well described by a power-law spectrum with photon index $\Gamma=1.80\pm0.17$, is pulsed with a $\sim$30% pulsed fraction above 2 keV. The thermal emission can be well fit with the sum of two blackbodies of temperatures $kT_1=70\pm4$ eV, $kT_2=137\pm7$ eV, $R_1=5.4_{-0.9}^{+1.3}$ km and $R_2=0.70_{-0.13}^{+0.15}$ km (for a distance of 1.2 kpc). We found no evidence for absorption lines as those observed in the shorter XMM-Newton observations ($\sim$67 ks) of this pulsar carried out in 2006. The X-ray thermal and non-thermal components peak in anti-phase and none of them is seen to coincide in phase with the radio pulse. This, coupled with the small difference in the emission radii of the two thermal components, disfavors an interpretation in which the dipolar polar cap is heated by magnetospheric backward-accelerated particles. Comparison with the other thermally-emitting isolated neutron stars with spectra well described by the sum of two components shows that the ratios $T_2$/$T_1$ and $R_2$/$R_1$ are similar for objects of different classes. We report the first $> 99\%$ confidence detection of X-ray polarization in BL Lacertae. During a recent X-ray/$\gamma$-ray outburst, a 287 ksec observation (2022 November 27-30) was taken using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer ({\it IXPE}), together with contemporaneous multiwavelength observations from the Neil Gehrels {\it Swift} observatory and {\it XMM-Newton} in soft X-rays (0.3--10~keV), {\it NuSTAR} in hard X-rays (3--70~keV), and optical polarization from the Calar Alto, and Perkins Telescope observatories. Our contemporaneous X-ray data suggest that the {\it IXPE} energy band is at the crossover between the low- and high-frequency blazar emission humps. The source displays significant variability during the observation, and we measure polarization in three separate time bins. Contemporaneous X-ray spectra allow us to determine the relative contribution from each emission hump. We find $>99\%$ confidence X-ray polarization $\Pi_{2-4{\rm keV}} = 21.7^{+5.6}_{-7.9}\%$ and electric vector polarization angle $\psi_{2-4{\rm keV}} = -28.7 \pm 8.7^{\circ}$ in the time bin with highest estimated synchrotron flux contribution. We discuss possible implications of our observations, including previous {\it IXPE} BL Lacertae pointings, tentatively concluding that synchrotron self-Compton emission dominates over hadronic emission processes during the observed epochs., Comment: Accepted to ApJL. 16 pages, 8 figures

However, many questions regarding the physical conditions at shock fronts, such as the magnetic-field morphology close to the particle acceleration sites, remain open. Here we report the detection of a localized polarization signal from some synchrotron X-ray emitting regions of Tycho's supernova remnant made by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. The derived degree of polarization of the X-ray synchrotron emission is 9% ± 2% averaged over the whole remnant, and 12% ± 2% at the rim, higher than the value of polarization of 7%–8% observed in the radio band. In the west region, the degree of polarization is 23% ± 4%. The degree of X-ray polarization in Tycho is higher than for Cassiopeia A, suggesting a more ordered magnetic field or a larger maximum turbulence scale. The measured tangential direction of polarization corresponds to the radial magnetic field, and is consistent with that observed in the radio band. These results are compatible with the expectation of turbulence produced by an anisotropic cascade of a radial magnetic field near the shock, where we derive a magnetic-field amplification factor of 3.4 ± 0.3. The fact that this value is significantly smaller than those expected from acceleration models is indicative of highly anisotropic magnetic-field turbulence, or that the emitting electrons either favor regions of lower turbulence, or accumulate close to where the orientation of the magnetic field is preferentially radially oriented due to hydrodynamical instabilities. © 2023. The Galactic Center harbors diffuse X-ray emission co-spatial with giant molecular clouds and featuring hard X-ray spectra with a prominent fluorescent iron line at 6.4 keV [1–3]. These spectral properties are characteristic of the reflected emission from a neutral gas illuminated by X-rays. However, there are no persistent X-ray sources in that region that are bright enough to provide the required illumination level. Moreover, the observed diffuse emission is variable on time scales of years [4, 5], implying that the primary source of X-rays must be variable, too. The most exciting and far-reaching scenario is that a very powerful flare from the central supermassive black hole of the Milky Way, Sgr A*, provided the required flux of X-ray photons, when for a period shorter than a few years it became at least five orders of magnitude brighter than is typically observed today. Even if the primary emission was unpolarized, the reflected emission should be polarized in the direction perpendicular to the scattering plane with the degree of polarization being set by the scattering angle. Therefore, by measuring X-ray polarization one can infer the direction towards the primary source and, simultaneously, the mutual positions in space of the source and the cloud [6]. Here, we report the detection of X-ray polarization from the Galactic Center region obtained by the recently launched Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) mission. For a large region where Chandra and XMM-Newton identify spectral signatures of the reflection, IXPE measures a polarization degree of 31% ± 11% with a polarization angle -48° ± 11° for the scattered continuum. The latter corroborates the conjecture that Sgr A* is the primary source of illuminating photons, while the former implies that some 200 years ago our Galactic Center hosted an extremely bright active galactic nucleus, on par with the ones found in Seyfert galaxies, though only for a short time.

Polarization measurements could provide information on their magnetic fields and surface properties. We observed polarized x-rays from the magnetar 4U 0142+61 using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and found a linear polarization degree of 13.5 ± 0.8% averaged over the 2– to 8–kilo–electron volt band. The polarization changes with energy: The degree is 15.0 ± 1.0% at 2 to 4 kilo–electron volts, drops below the instrumental sensitivity ~4 to 5 kilo–electron volts, and rises to 35.2 ± 7.1% at 5.5 to 8 kilo–electron volts. The polarization angle also changes by 90° at ~4 to 5 kilo–electron volts. Using observations of X-ray pulsar Her X-1 by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, we report on a highly significant detection of the polarization signal from an accreting neutron star. The observed degree of the linear polarization of ∼ 10% is found to be far below theoretical expectations for this object, and stays low throughout the spin cycle of the pulsar. Both the polarization degree and the angle exhibit variability with pulse phase, which allowed us to measure the pulsar spin position angle and magnetic obliquity of the neutron star, which is an essential step towards detailed modeling of the intrinsic emission of X-ray pulsars. Combining our results with the optical polarimetric data, we find that the spin axis of the neutron star and the angular momentum of the binary orbit are misaligned by at least ∼20 deg, which is a strong argument in support of the models explaining stability of the observed super-orbital variability with the precession of the neutron star.

Pulsating Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (PULXs) are thought to be X-ray bright, accreting, magnetized neutron stars, and could be the first and only evidence for the existence of magnetars in binary systems. Their apparent soft (< 20 keV) X-ray luminosity can exceed the Eddington luminosity for a neutron star (NS) by a few orders of magnitude. Although several scenarios have been proposed to explain the different components observed in the X-ray spectra and the characteristics of the X-ray lightcurve of these system, detailed quantitative calculations are still missing. In particular, the observed soft X-ray lightcurves are almost sinuosidal and show an increase in the pulsed fraction (from 8% up to even 30%) with increasing energy. Here, we present how emission originating from an optically thick envelope, expected to be formed during super-Eddington accretion, can result in pulsed fractions similar to observations.

The observational properties of isolated NSs are shaped by their magnetic field and surface temperature. They evolve in a strongly coupled fashion, and modelling them is key in understanding the emission properties of NSs. Much effort was put in tackling this problem in the past but only recently a suitable 3D numerical framework was developed. We present a set of 3D simulations addressing both the long-term evolution (≈ 104–106 yrs) and short-lived outbursts (≲ 1 yr). Not only a 3D approach allows one to test complex field geometries, but it is absolutely key to model magnetar outbursts, which observations associate to the appearance of small, inherently asymmetric hot regions. Even though the mechanism that triggers these phenomena is not completely understood, following the evolution of a localised heat injection in the crust serves as a model to study the unfolding of the event.

Anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) form together a single class of astrophysical sources, commonly associated to magnetars. New-generation X-ray polarimeters will play a key role in assessing the nature of these sources by directly probing the star magnetic field. In the highly magnetized environment radiation is expected to be strongly polarized and such a measure will be easily within reach of IXPE and eXTP. Polarization measurements will eventually confirm the presence of ultra-strong magnetic fields, probing the magnetar scenario. In this work we will discuss theoretical expectations for the polarization signature of AXPs and SGRs and present numerical simulations for the detector response of the polarimeters currently under construction. We will also show how these sources can be used to test vacuum birefringence, a QED effect predicted by Heisemberg and Euler in the Thirties and not experimentally verified as yet.

We report here the results of the first IXPE observation of a weakly magnetized neutron star, GS 1826−238, performed on 2022 March 29–31 when the source was in a high soft state. An upper limit (99.73% confidence level) of 1.3% for the linear polarization degree is obtained over the IXPE 2–8 keV energy range. Coordinated INTEGRAL and NICER observations were carried out simultaneously with IXPE. The spectral parameters obtained from the fits to the broadband spectrum were used as inputs for Monte Carlo simulations considering different possible geometries of the X-ray emitting region. Comparing the IXPE upper limit with these simulations, we can put constraints on the geometry and inclination angle of GS 1826–238. © 2023. The Author(s). Photon-axion mixing can create observable signatures in thermal spectra of isolated, cooling neutron stars. Their shape depends on the polarization properties of the radiation, which, in turn, are determined by the structure of stellar outermost layers. Here we investigate the effect of mixing on the spectrum and polarimetric observables, polarization fraction and polarization angle, using realistic models of surface emission. We focus on RX J1856.5-3754, the only source among the X-ray dim isolated neutron stars for which polarimetric measurements in the optical band were performed. Our results show that in the case of a condensed surface in both fixed and free-ion limits, the mixing can significantly limit the geometric configurations which reproduce the observed linear polarization fraction of 16.43%. In the case of an atmosphere, the mixing does not create any noticeable signatures. The "Magnificent Seven" (M7) are a group of radio-quiet Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) discovered in the soft X-rays through their purely thermal surface emission. Owing to the large inferred magnetic fields ($B\approx 10^{13}$ G), radiation from these sources is expected to be substantially polarised, independently on the mechanism actually responsible for the thermal emission. A large observed polarisation degree is, however, expected only if quantum-electrodynamics (QED) polarisation effects are present in the magnetised vacuum around the star. The detection of a strongly linearly polarised signal would therefore provide the first observational evidence of QED effects in the strong-field regime. While polarisation measurements in the soft X-rays are not feasible yet, optical polarisation measurements are within reach also for quite faint targets, like the M7 which have optical counterparts with magnitudes $\approx 26$--$28$. Here, we report on the measurement of optical linear polarisation for the prototype, and brightest member, of the class, RX\, J1856.5$-$3754 ($V\sim 25.5$), the first ever for one of the M7, obtained with the Very Large Telescope. We measured a polarisation degree $\mathrm{P.D.} =16.43\% \pm5.26\%$ and a polarisation position angle $\mathrm{P.A.}=145\fdg39\pm9\fdg44$, computed east of the North Celestial Meridian. The $\mathrm{P.D.}$ that we derive is large enough to support the presence of vacuum birefringence, as predicted by QED., 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

PSR B0943+10 is a mode-switching radio pulsar characterized by two emission modes with different radio and X-ray properties. Previous studies, based on simple combinations of blackbody and power law models, showed that its X-ray flux can be decomposed in a pulsed thermal plus an unpulsed non-thermal components. However, if PSR B0943+10 is a nearly aligned rotator seen pole-on, as suggested by the radio data, it is difficult to reproduce the high observed pulsed fraction unless magnetic beaming is included. In this work we reanalyze all the available X-ray observations of PSR B0943+10 with simultaneous radio coverage, modeling its thermal emission with polar caps covered by a magnetized hydrogen atmosphere or with a condensed iron surface. The condensed surface model provides good fits to the spectra of both pulsar modes, but, similarly to the blackbody, it can not reproduce the observed pulse profiles, unless an additional power law with an ad hoc modulation is added. Instead, the pulse profiles and phase-resolved spectra are well described using the hydrogen atmosphere model to describe the polar cap emission, plus an unpulsed power law. For the X-ray brighter state (Q-mode) we obtain a best fit with a temperature kT~0.09 keV, an emitting radius R~260 m, a magnetic field consistent with the value of the dipole field of 4x10^12 G inferred from the timing parameters, and a small angle between the magnetic and spin axis, $\xi$=5. The corresponding parameters for the X-ray fainter state (B-mode) are kT~0.08 keV and R~170 m., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recently, numerical calculations of the magnetic field evolution in neutron stars demonstrated the possible existence of a Hall attractor, a stage at which the evolution of the field driven by the Hall cascade ends. The existence of such a stage in neutron star magnetic evolution is very important, and can be potentially probed by observations. Here we discuss three types of objects which could have reached this stage. First, we briefly describe the evolution of normal radio pulsars with ages about a few hundred thousand years. Then we analyse in more detail observations of RX J1856.5-3754, one of the Magnificent Seven, focusing on the surface temperature distribution and comparing model predictions with the temperature map inferred from X-ray observations. Finally, we discuss the necessity of the Hall attractor stage to explain the hypothetical existence of accreting magnetars. We conclude that at the moment there is no direct confirmation of the Hall attractor stage in known sources. The study of magnetars is of particular relevance since these objects are the only laboratories where the physics in ultra-strong magnetic fields can be directly tested. Until now, spectroscopic and timing measurements at X-ray energies in soft gamma-repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXPs) have been the main source of information about the physical properties of a magnetar and of its magnetosphere. Spectral fitting in the ~ 0.5-10 keV range allowed to validate the "twisted magnetosphere" model, probing the structure of the external field and estimating the density and velocity of the magnetospheric currents. Spectroscopy alone, however, may fail in disambiguating the two key parameters governing magnetospheric scattering (the charge velocity and the twist angle) and is quite insensitive to the source geometry. X-ray polarimetry, on the other hand, can provide a quantum leap in the field by adding two extra observables, the linear polarization degree and the polarization angle. Using the bright AXP 1RXS J170849.0-400910 as a template, we show that phase-resolved polarimetric measurements can unambiguously determine the model parameters, even with a small X-ray polarimetry mission carrying modern photoelectric detectors and existing X-ray optics. We also show that polarimetric measurements can pinpoint vacuum polarization effects and thus provide an indirect evidence for ultra-strong magnetic fields., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
