Purpose This paper aims to study the factors influencing online social network (OSN) information diffusion under different themes helps to understand information diffusion in general. Design/methodology/approach This study collects data from the Web of Science, use the strategic consulting intelligent support system for word frequency analysis and use keyword clustering to classify themes, then research information themes as influencing factors of OSN information diffusion. Findings Five themes of “natural disaster”, “political event”, “product marketing”, “sport and entertainment” and “health-disease” have been identified. It is found that the research objects, research methods and research theories used by scholars under different themes have different focuses, and the factors affecting information diffusion are different. Research limitations/implications The limitation of this paper is that it only focuses on five typical themes, and there may be more themes. Practical implications The research helps other scholars to conduct in-depth research on the diffusion of OSN information under different topics and focus on the content of the research on OSN information diffusion under different topics. Social implications The research helps other scholars to conduct in-depth research on the diffusion of social network information under different topics, so as to better understand and predict the law of information diffusion. Originality/value The research summarizes the research on information diffusion in OSNs from the theme level and analyses the key points and theories and further enriches the research system on information diffusion in OSNs.

Purpose Microblogging is an important channel used to disseminate online public opinion during an emergency. Analyzing the features and evolution mechanism of online public opinion during an emergency plays a significant role in crisis management. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses the event of Hurricane Irma and combines it with the life cycle of online public opinion evolution to understand the effect of different types of emotional (joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust) microblogs (tweets) on information dissemination. The research was performed in the context of Hurricane Irma by using tweets associated with that event. Findings This paper demonstrates that negative emotional information has a greater communication effect, and further, the target audience that receives more exposure to negative emotional microblogs has a stronger tendency to retweet. Meanwhile, emotions expressed in tweets and the life cycle of public opinion evolution exert interactive effects on the retweeting behavior of the target audience. Research limitations/implications For future research, a professional dictionary and the context should be taken into consideration to make the modeling in the text more normative and analyzable. Practical implications This paper aims to reveal how the emotions of a tweet affect its virality in terms of diffusion volume in the context of an emergency event. Social implications The conclusion made in this paper can shed light on the real-time regulation and public opinion transmission, as well as for efficient intelligence service and emergency management. Originality/value In this study, Hurricane Irma is taken as an example to explore the factors influencing the information dissemination during emergencies on the social media environment. The relationship between the sentiment of a tweet and the life cycle of public opinion and its effect on tweet volume were investigated.

There is a need to understand how to: spread product information to maximum range, identifying influential users, and analyze how they are intrinsically connected in a social network. In this paper, we collected tweets of Huawei Mate 9 to analyze users’ information behavior such as tweeting, forwarding, and commenting on tweets. We applied independent cascade model to this empirical Twitter diffusion network, and found it is proper to fit to the product information diffusion process. Using its network structure and PageRank measurement, we can identify influential nodes, and interpret the intrinsic connection between these influential nodes. Further, it is significant to consider the node’s background, such as interest, occupation, and country when identifying influential nodes. And it is discussed that the tweet content related to novel technology may attract more participation in ordinary users.

In this paper, the sociotechnical theoretical lens was taken to identify the human and the technology factors that affect the accuracy of the Active Medication List (AML). A multi-method multi-study approach was used. In Study 1, a case study was conducted and research hypotheses were developed based on the results. In Study 2, nurses, physicians, and pharmacists in three hospitals were surveyed to empirically test the research model developed in Study 1. In Study 3, a qualitative analysis on the comments from the survey was performed. The research results suggest the two human factors, list taker and list source, have significant effects on the accuracy of the AML. Of the two information technology factors, user interface design is significant but system connectivity is not. In scenarios like AML accuracy, human factors play a more important role than technology factors.

In an e-commerce transaction both the user and the provider of the service have expectations regarding the security of the transaction. These are authentication of those involved in the communication; confidentiality of the information exchanged in the communication; and integrity of the information exchanged in the communication. A secure communication channel will meet these expectations. This chapter provides an understanding of how the Secure Sockets Layer Protocol (SSL) and its variation Transport Layer Security Protocol (TLS) can be used to set up, maintain, and use a secure channel. This secure channel may be used for e-commerce as well as secure communication. In addition, a discussion of SSL's strengths and weakness is presented and alternatives are suggested. Competitive intelligence (CI) is the selection, collection, interpretation and distribution of publicly held information that is strategically important to a firm. A substantial amount of this public information is accessible via the World Wide Web. This paper describes some of the difficulties in using this information resource for CI purposes, some of the solutions to these difficulties, and areas in need of research if the Web is to be used in CI.

The physical transport methods used in wireless communication differ from wired communication. These differences affect how a secure channel can be established in a wireless environment. The purpose of this tutorial is to provide an overview of how a secure channel is set up in a wireless environment that uses the 802.11 or WAP standards.

This paper is a summary of the tutorial on Internet privacy. The objective of the tutorial is to inform users of the Internet how and why their use of the Internet can be monitored. The focus of the tutorial will be Internet privacy at home and in the work place. The tutorial has three major sections: Technical Background, At Home and At Work. The At Home section is concerned with personal privacy infringement. This section will detail who would be interested in personal privacy infringement, how they would accomplish it, and for what purpose. This portion presents topics such as cookies and their uses and log files. In addition the At Home section discusses techniques to avoid privacy infringement (e.g. anonymizers, cookie cutter). The At Work section is concerned with employee surveillance. The topics discussed include who would be interested in this surveillance, how this surveillance would be done and for what purpose. The At Work section also discusses the concept of Acceptable Use Policies (AUP). Questions address: What purpose do AUP serve? How do AUP support or detract from employee surveillance? Both sections require a bit of technical expertise to understand how Internet activity can be monitored. The Technical Background section reviews the client/server paradigm of web computing, the important details of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and presents an overview of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). These concepts are necessary to understand how Internet activity con be monitored.

This tutorial presents an overview of the major categories of Web site attacks, their effects, and possible countermeasures. The focus is the Web security necessary for a reasonable guarantee of secure e-commerce. The tutorial is intended for those who have little or no knowledge of Web security and its importance to e-commerce. It provides a basic understanding of the issues, the techniques, and the nomenclature used. An annotated bibliography points the reader to additional sources on specific topics.

This study seeks to examine the relationship between innovation and knowledge in family versus non-family businesses with regard to performance. Data from 430 small and medium-sized enterprises were analyzed through hierarchical regression analysis, and innovation was found to be a significant factor in both family and non-family samples. However, knowledge in family firms was also found to be significant with innovation. Implications for theory and practice are discussed that may provide possible competitive advantage for small family firms.
