Aural plaques are associated with and thought to be caused by one or more Equus caballus papillomaviruses (EcPV). Aural plaques have not previously been reported to be associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).To describe a horse with aural plaques and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on the right pinna.A 28-year-old thoroughbred gelding presented for multiple plaques and a mass on the right pinna.Pinnal resection, histopathological investigation, multiple conventional PCRs for papillomavirus DNA and Sanger sequencing were performed.Multiple, raised, pale tan, fronded plaques covered 60% of the concave surface of the right pinna. Focally these plaques coalesced into an exophytic ulcerated mass near the base of the pinna. Multiple aural plaques and a SCC were diagnosed histopathologically. EcPV4 was detected via PCR in a sample of the SCC.This report demonstrates the possibility of malignant transformation from aural plaques to SCC on the pinna of a horse. Elles n’ont pas encore été décrites en association à un carcinome épidermoïde (SCC). HYPOTHÈSES/OBJECTIFS: Décrire un cheval avec plaques aurales et carcinome épidermoïde (SCC) sur le pavillon droit.Un pur sang hongre de 28 ans est présenté pour plaques multiples et une masse au niveau du pavillon auriculaire droit. MATÉRIELS ET MÉTHODES: Une exérèse du pavillon, un examen histopathologique, plusieurs PCR pour recherche d’ADN de papillomavirus et séquençage Sanger ont été réalisés. RÉSULTATS: De multiples plaques surélevées, papillomateuses, blanchâtres, couvraient 60% de la surface concave du pavillon droit. Focalement ces plaques coalesçaient en une masse ulcérée exophytique près de la base du pavillon. De multiples plaques aurales et un SCC ont été diagnostiqués à l’examen histopathologique. L’EcPV4 a été détecté par PCR dans un échantillon du SCC.Cet article démontre la possibilité d’une transformation maligne de plaque aurale à SCC du pavillon d’un cheval. Es wurde bisher nicht davon berichtet, dass aurale Plaques mit einem Plattenepithelkarzinom (SCC) im Zusammenhang stehen könnten.Die Beschreibung eines Pferdes mit auralen Plaques und einem Plattenepithelkarzinom (SCC) an der rechten Pinna.Ein 28 Jahre alter Vollblutwallach, die wegen multipler Plaques und einer Masse an der rechten Pinna vorgestellt wurde.Eine Resektion der Pinna, eine histopathologische Untersuchung, multiple konventionelle PCR Untersuchungen auf Papillomavirus DNA, sowie Sanger Sequenzierung wurden durchgeführt.Multiple, erhabene blassbraune, wedelartige Plaques bedeckten 60% der konkaven Oberfläche der rechten Pinna. Fokal koaleszierten diese Plaques zu exophytisch ulzerierten Massen nahe der Basis der Pinna. Histopathologisch wurden multiple aurale Plaques und ein SCC diagnostiziert. EcPV4 wurde mittels PCR in einer SCC Probe entdeckt.Dieser Bericht demonstriert die Möglichkeit einer malignen Transformation von einem auralen Plaques zu einem SCC an der Pinna eines Pferdes. Não há relatos ainda de placas aurais associadas ao carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE). HIPÓTESE / OBJETIVOS: Descrever o caso de um cavalo com placas aurais e carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE) no pavilhão auricular direito.Um cavalo castrado puro‐sangue inglês de 28 anos de idade apresentado diversas placas e uma massa na orelha direita. MÉTODOS E MATERIAIS: Foram realizados: ressecção do pavilhão auricular, investigação histopatológica, múltiplas PCRs convencionais para DNA de papilomavírus e sequenciamento de Sanger.Múltiplas placas elevadas, amarronzadas a pálidas e vegetantes cobriam 60% da superfície côncava do pavilhão auricular direito. Focalmente, essas placas coalesceram em uma massa ulcerada exofítica perto da base do pavilhão auricular. Múltiplas placas aurais e um CCE foram diagnosticados histopatologicamente. O EcPV4 foi detectado por PCR em uma amostra do CCE. CONCLUSÕES E IMPORTÂNCIA CLÍNICA: Este relato demonstra a possibilidade da transformação maligna de placas aurais em CCE na orelha de um cavalo. De acordo com o conhecimento dos autores, este é o primeiro relato de EcPV4 associado a CCE.INTRODUCCIÓN: las placas aurales están asociadas y se cree que son causadas por uno o más virus papiloma de Equus caballus (EcPV). ANIMALES: un caballo castrado pura sangre de 28 años se presentó con múltiples placas y una masa en pabellón auricular derecho. MÉTODOS Y MATERIALES: se realizaron resección de la oreja, investigación histopatológica, múltiples PCR convencionales para DNA del virus del papiloma y secuenciación de Sanger. RESULTADOS: múltiples placas elevadas, de color pardo pálido y papilares cubrían el 60% de la superficie cóncava del pabellón auricular derecho. Focalmente, estas placas se unían en una masa ulcerada y exofítica cerca de la base de la oreja. Múltiples placas auditivas y un SCC fueron diagnosticados histopatológicamente. EcPV4 se detectó mediante PCR en una muestra de SCC. CONCLUSIONES E IMPORTANCIA CLÍNICA: este caso demuestra la posibilidad de transformación maligna de las placas auditivas a SCC en la oreja de un caballo. A entender de los autores, este es el primer informe de EcPV4 asociado con SCC.

A 7-year-old, white, domestic short hair, female cat was presented with an aural hematoma of the right pinna, which had been partially resected a year previously. A 3 × 4 cm mass, macroscopically similar to an auricular hematoma, was visible on the convex surface and a smaller vascular lesion was present on the ear margin. Cytological examination of the smaller mass was suggestive of hemangiosarcoma, and a diagnosis confirmed by histopathologic and immunohistochemical tests. Complete pinnectomy with a wide margin was performed and during the 3-year follow-up, the cat had no local recurrence or metastasis. We conclude that hemangiosarcoma should be considered as a potential differential diagnosis in white-coated cats with an unusual clinical presentation of aural hematoma.

Background The aetiology and appropriate treatment for auricular chondritis in the dog are currently unclear. This report describes a unique presentation and successful treatment of a dog with auricular chondritis. Clinical summary A 12-year-old, female spayed, Labrador retriever dog was presented for severe pain thought to be neurological in origin. The pain was located to the right pinna and two punch biopsies were acquired and evaluated, revealing lymphoplasmacytic to pyogranulomatous inflammation involving the auricular cartilage with no infectious agents. Treatment with systemic oral prednisone resulted in resolution of clinical signs within four weeks of initiation of treatment. The dog remained free of clinical signs for six months following discontinuation of treatment before being euthanized for an unrelated reason. Conclusions Further evaluation of canine auricular chondritis is needed, yet pain may be a prominent finding; monotherapy with systemic prednisone may provide quick and complete resolution of clinical sysmptoms.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a rare complication of herpes zoster in which reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus infection in the geniculate ganglion causes otalgia, auricular vesicles and lower motor neuron facial palsy. A 52-year-old man presented to us with complaints of vesicular eruptions over the right pinna, otalgia and facial weakness i.e. deviation of the angle of mouth to the left side and inability to close the right eye from last 3 days. A diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome with grade V facial palsy was made. Intravenous acyclovir and oral steroids were started. Patient showed marked improvement within 10 days. For facial palsy, rehabilitation therapy was also given.

The pinnae and external ear canals in ferrets are fairly small. Many breeders tattoo the ears of the ferrets. In the USA, one major breeder puts two dots in the right pinna signifying neuter/spay and demusking (Fig. 15.1). A breeder in Canada does a stripe in the right ear. Laboratory animal sources tend to putin small metal clip ear tags with individual numbers (Fig. 15.2). The pinna sometimes becomes infected or traumatised around these clips. Ferrets may tear them out; resulting in damage to the pinna.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the scalp are remarkably rare. We report a case of 20 years old female complaining of swelling over right pinna and scalp since 2 years with known history of trauma. This case report represents pathogenesis, clinical features and management of the disease.

Auricular perichondritis is a dangerous complication of the traumatized ear that can lead to residual deformity. The most common pathogen is Pseudomonas aeruginosa, followed by Staphylococcus aureus. A 14 year old female presented to the emergency department (ED) complaining of pain and swelling in her right pinna for two weeks after an ear piercing, she was treated with antibiotics and showed a complete resolution. Prompt and early diagnosis of perichondritis is primordial to avoid potential esthetic sequelae.

A 12-year-old girl presented to us with a swelling over the lateral surface of the right pinna of 4 years duration. Examination revealed an irregular mass arising from lateral surface of the pinna obscuring the external auditory canal. The lesion was not ulcerated. Wide excision of mass done and sent for Histopathological examination which revealed Tricho folliculoma. This case is being reported as it is a rare skin adnexal tumor arising from an unusual site.

This case report describes for the first time sarcoids in tapirs (Tapirus bairdii), namely, a 2-year-old male and a 3.6-year-old female born and housed at the same facility. The male presented with a 3-cm nodular, red, pedunculated, hairless, ulcerated mass on the inner surface of the left pinna. No recurrence or additional growths were present during the 3 years following surgical excision of the mass. The female presented with a similar 2-cm mass on the inner surface of the right pinna, which recurred 2 months following surgical excision, but was subsequently successfully treated locally with liquid nitrogen with no further recurrence during a 2-year follow-up period. Histologically, these two masses closely resembled equine sarcoids. Similarly, an association with bovine papillomavirus 1 was demonstrated using polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization.

We describe a case of basal cell carcinoma of right pinna in a 54 year old man. The patient underwent wide local excision of the lesion with lateral temporal bone resection. The defect created was reconstructed using Pectoralis major myocutaneous flap on same side in collaboration with plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Review after 6 months does not reveal any signs of recurrence.

Objective The aim of this study was to describe a rare intra-auricular sinus. An otherwise healthy 15-year-old girl presented with recurrent infections in her right pinna from early infancy. Physical examination revealed a draining sinus which opened to the descending helical limb, while its cystic component was entrapped within the cartilaginous antitragus. Comprehensive surgical excision was performed after the tract and the more distal cyst was delineated. Surgical pathology revealed a true sinus, measuring 2 cm. Follow-up was unremarkable. Discussion In addition to the two previously described variants of pre-auricular cyst: the classic variant (the pit is anterior to the external auditory canal) and the postauricular variant (the pit is behind the ascending limb of the helix), we suggest a third variant which opens to the descending helical rim.

A case of haemangioma with arterio-venous fistula involving the right pinna in a 25 year old female is being reported. The lesion including the pinna was excised surgically. Clinically it was labelled as an arterio-venous fistula and reported to be haemangioma histopathologically.
