Background: No evidence currently exists characterising global outcomes following major cancer surgery, including esophageal cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to characterise impact of high income countries (HIC) versus low and middle income countries (LMIC) on the outcomes following esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.Method: This international multi-center prospective study across 137 hospitals in 41 countries included patients who underwent an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, with 90-day follow-up. The main explanatory variable was country income, defined according to the World Bank Data classification. The primary outcome was 90-day postoperative mortality, and secondary outcomes were composite leaks (anastomotic leak or conduit necrosis) and major complications (Clavien-Dindo Grade III - V). Multivariable generalized estimating equation models were used to produce adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI95%).Results: Between April 2018 to December 2018, 2247 patients were included. Patients from HIC were more significantly older, with higher ASA grade, and more advanced tumors. Patients from LMIC had almost three-fold increase in 90-day mortality, compared to HIC (9.4% vs 3.7%, p < 0.001). On adjusted analysis, LMIC were independently associated with higher 90-day mortality (OR: 2.31, CI95%: 1.17-4.55, p = 0.015). However, LMIC were not independently associated with higher rates of anastomotic leaks (OR: 1.06, CI95%: 0.57-1.99, p = 0.9) or major complications (OR: 0.85, CI95%: 0.54-1.32, p = 0.5), compared to HIC.Conclusion: Resections in LMIC were independently associated with higher 90-day postoperative mortality, likely reflecting a failure to rescue of these patients following esophagectomy, despite similar composite anastomotic leaks and major complication rates to HIC. These findings warrant further research, to identify potential issues and solutions to improve global outcomes following esophagectomy for cancer.

This paper details the design and fabrication of a portable air conditioner device with a self-cleaning system which can be set by the user depending on the desired schedule. The self-cleaning system cleans the evaporator and condenser of the air conditioner. The processing unit (a microcontroller) will determine if the cleaning function will commence by extracting data from the water level sensor located on the device’s water repository used for cleaning and from the user-defined timer. The self-cleaning system will not initialize if the microcontroller determines that there’s no water on the tank. Temperature sensoris used to detect the room temperature and two red-green-blue (RGB) light emitting diodes(LEDs) as indicators. Optimum settings on the water volume and sprinkler’s hole diameter were determined in order to satisfactorily clean the evaporator and condenser in 102 seconds. On an ideal room size for a 1⁄2 horsepower AC system, the target temperature of 25°C was reached within 8-14 minutes.

In a magnetic multilayer, the spin transfer between localized magnetization dynamics and itinerant conduction spin arises from the interaction between a normal metal and an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. The spin-mixing conductance then governs the spin-transfer torques and spin pumping at the magnetic interface. Theoretical description of spin-mixing conductance at the magnetic interface often employs a single conduction-band model. However, there is orbital hybridization between conduction $s$ electron and localized $d$ electron of the heavy transition metal, in which the single conduction-band model is insufficient to describe the $s$-$d$ orbital hybridization. In this work, using the generalized Anderson model, we estimate the spin-mixing conductance that arises from the $s$-$d$ orbital hybridization. BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia is a common condition in patients with comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) or congestive heart failure. Moreover, severe hyperkalemia is a potentially life-threatening condition that is associated with a higher risk of adverse clinical events such as ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Currently, data regarding the prognostic implications of chronic hyperkalemia are available; however, the information about the long-term clinical consequences after an episode of severe hyperkalemia remains scarce. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between the trajectory of potassium measurements in patients with acute hyperkalemia and long-term all-cause mortality. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study that included patients with acute severe hyperkalemia (K>6 mEq/L) without hemolysis in the emergency room of Dr. Peset University Hospital in Valencia, Spain searching the lab database from January 2016 to March 2017. The multivariable-adjusted association of serum potassium with mortality was assessed by using comprehensive state-of-the-art regression methods that can accommodate time-dependent exposure modelling. RESULTS: We found 172 episodes of acute hyperkalemia in 160 patients in the emergency room. The mean age of the sample was 77±12years and 60.5% were males. The most frequent comorbidities were CKD (71.2%), heart failure (35%) and diabetes mellitus (56.9%). Only 11.9% of the patients were on chronic dialysis. A quarter of the patients did not have previous CKD making hyperkalemia as an unpredictable life-threatening complication. During the acute episode, mean potassium and eGFR were 6.6±0.6 (range: 6,1-9,2), and eGFR: 23±16 (r : 2-84). After a median follow-up of 17.3 (IQR: 2.2-23.7) months, 68 patients died (42.5%). Recurrences of hyperkalemia (K>5.5 mEq/L) were detected in 39.5%% of the patients who were monitored during follow-up. We found that previous potassium levels during an acute severe hyperkalemia episode were not predictors of mortality. Conversely, the post-discharge longitudinal trajectories of potassium were able to predict all-cause mortality (overall p-value=0.0015). The effect of transitioning from hyperkalemia to normokalaemia (K>5.5 to K=5.5 after the acute episode was significant and inversely associated with the risk of mortality. CONCLUSION: The potassium levels prior to a severe hyperkalemic event do not predict mortality. Conversely, following an episode of acute severe hyperkalemia, serial kinetic of potassium trajectories predicts the risk of death. Further evidence is needed to confirm these findings and clarify the optimal long-term management of these patients.

Previous single-pulse extreme ultraviolet and X-ray coherent diffraction studies revealed that superfluid 4He droplets obtained in free jet expansion acquire sizable angular momentum, resulting in significant centrifugal distortion. Similar experiments with normal fluid 3He droplets may help elucidating the origin of the of the large degree of rotational excitation and highlight similarities and differences of dynamics in normal and superfluid droplets. Here, we present the first comparison of the shapes of isolated 3He and 4He droplets following expansion of the corresponding fluids in vacuum at temperatures as low as ~ 2 K. Large 3He and 4He droplets with average radii of ~160 nm and ~350 nm, respectively, were produced. We find that the majority of the 3He droplets in the beam correspond to rotating oblate spheroids with reduced average angular momentum ($\Lambda$) and reduced angular velocities ($\Omega$) similar to that of 4He droplets. Given the different physical nature of 3He and 4He, this similarity in $\Lambda$ and $\Omega$ may be surprising and suggest that similar mechanisms induce rotation regardless of the isotope. We hypothesized that the observed distribution of droplet sizes and angular momenta stem from processes in the dense region close to the nozzle. In this region, the significant velocity spread and collisions between the droplets induce excessive rotation followed by droplet fission. BackgroundEarly microbial colonization is a relevant aspect in human health. Altered microbial colonization patterns have been linked to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Advances in understanding host-microbe interactions highlight the pivotal role of maternal microbiota on infant health programming. This birth cohort is aimed to characterize the maternal microbes transferred to neonates during the first 1000days of life, as well as to identify the potential host and environmental factors, such as gestational age, mode of delivery, maternal/infant diet, and exposure to antibiotics, which affect early microbial colonization.MethodsMAMI is a prospective mother-infant birth cohort in the Spanish-Mediterranean area. Mothers were enrolled at the end of pregnancy and families were follow-up during the first years of life. Maternal-infant biological samples were collected at several time points from birth to 24months of life. Clinical and anthropometric characteristics and dietary information is available. Specific qPCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing as well as short chain fatty acid (SCFAs) profile would be obtained. Multivariable models will be used to identy associations between microbiota and clinical and anthropometric data controlling for confounders.MAMI would contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between diet, microbiota and host response in early life health programming, enabling new applications in the field of personalized nutrition and medicine.Trial registrationThe study is registered on the ClinicalTrial.gov platform NCT03552939. [Aim] We describe the effectiveness and safety of the interferon-free regimen ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir plus dasabuvir with or without ribavirin (OBV/PTV/r ± DSV ± RBV) in a nationwide representative sample of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) monoinfected and human immunodeficiency virus-1/hepatitis C virus (HIV/HCV) coinfected population in Spain., [Material and methods] Data were collected from patients infected with HCV genotypes 1 or 4, with or without HIV-1 coinfection, treated with OBV/PTV/r ± DSV ± RBV at 61 Spanish sites within the initial implementation year of the first government-driven “National HCV plan.” Effectiveness was assessed by sustained virologic response at post-treatment week 12 (SVR12) and compared between monoinfected and coinfected patients using a non-inferiority margin of 5% and a 90% confidence interval (CI). Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics or patients and adverse events (AEs) were also recorded., [Results] Overall, 2,408 patients were included in the intention-to-treat analysis: 386 (16%) were patients with HIV/HCV. Patient selection reflected the real distribution of patients treated in each participating region in Spain. From the total population, 96.6% (95% CI, 95.8–97.3%) achieved SVR12. Noninferiority of SVR12 in coinfected patients was met, with a difference between monoinfected and coinfected patients of −2.2% (90% CI, −4.5% - 0.2%). Background and AimMinimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) predicts poor prognosis and could reflect an advanced liver disease. We aimed to assess whether MHE could be a surrogate marker of a further liver disease. MethodsProspective multicenter study including 320 cirrhotic patients, followed for up to 5years, which were classified at baseline in compensated cirrhosis without (stage 1) and with varices (stage 2), one decompensating event (stage 3), and any second decompensating event (stage 4). Cirrhosis progression was defined by a transition towards a different stage (competing events: liver transplant due to hepatocellular carcinoma and non-liver-related death). MHE was detected by critical flicker frequency and psychometric tests. ResultsMinimal hepatic encephalopathy was diagnosed in 18.2% (57/314) of patients. Cirrhosis progression occurred in 38.1% (122/320) of patients, while liver transplant was required in 10.9% (35/320), and 19.1% (61/320) died. In competing risk regression, MHE was associated with disease progression: model 1 {subhazard ratio [sHR] 2.34 [95%confidence interval (CI) 1.58-3.46]; P=0.0001}; model 2 [sHR 2.18 (95%CI 1.43-3.33); P=0.0001]; model 3 [sHR 2.48 (95%CI 1.63-3.76); P=0.0001]. The annual incidence rate of progression was higher in MHE patients: stage 1 (19.4 vs 5.6cases per 100person-years); stage 2 (26.8 vs 15.6); stage 3 (45.7 vs 16.5); and stage 4 (40.7 vs 12.8). MHE showed a higher cumulative incidence of disease progression from the first year in decompensated and the third year in compensated cirrhosis. ConclusionMinimal hepatic encephalopathy was associated with cirrhosis progression and showed a higher cumulative and annual incidence rate of disease progression. MHE could be a surrogate marker of disease progression, irrespective of cirrhosis status, identifying patients at risk of suffering a more aggressive cirrhosis form.

The objective of this study is to quantify how much water is utilized by oak trees in an oak-hickory forest in Glenville, WV from the onset of leaf budding to peak growing season. Water use directly correlates with transpiration among plants, which is the water lost through stomata as a consequence of photosynthesis. Stomatal activity is also affected by environmental and atmospheric variables. A CR-1000 data logger equipped with Thermal Dissipation Probes (TDP) will be used to collect sap flow data every 30 minutes. The TDP will be placed in holes drilled through the cambium and into the xylem layer of each tree. An electrical charge of 3.02 volts is sent from the data logger to the topmost probe causing it to heat up, and the second probe measures the temperature difference every 30 minutes. The site selected for this project is a relatively dry site with west facing slope, 30-37% average slope and approximately 300 m in elevation. Three species of oaks that differ in their level of tolerance to water conditions will be used in the study, namely black oak, chestnut oak, and white oak. An Onset HOBO Weather Station will also be used to record local atmospheric variables such as precipitation, barometric pressure, wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and soil moisture. The relationship of tree water use and atmospheric variables will be determined using correlation analysis.

Marcellus shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock that is part of the formation of a rock unit from the Devonian age. The Devonian age is roughly 390 million years old. This which shows a significant age for the Marcellus shale as well. The Marcellus shale was formed millions of years ago when the mud from the Devonian age sea hardened as it was deposited on the oxygen deprived sea floor. Because much of the United States was covered by oceans 390 million years ago, what is now West Virginia has a significant amount of Marcellus shale underneath its surface. Marcellus shale is very rich in organic materials and has been considered the major source of natural gas produced in the Appalachian Basin to this date. The shale formation in West Virginia is around 6,000 feet deep and the various gas fields are believed to contain more than 50 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas. The oil and gas business has boomed in this state over the years due to this excellent source of natural gas. Using spatial analysis in Geographic Information System, the location and extent of Marcellus wells will be determined. This study will use spatial data from WV Geological and Economic Survey, WV Department of Environmental Protection and WV GIS Technical Center. Maps of the entire state will be created to show the range of productive wells and the environmental factors that could possibly be affected as a result of constructing and maintaining the wells.

The ‘global warming’ effect has been found to influence vegetation phenological processes. Heat island phenomenon associated with urbanized area presents a unique place to investigate its local warming effects. This study compares the date of budburst (DOBB) of street London plane trees (Platanus × acerifolia) between highly urbanized New York City (NYC) and relatively less urbanized Ithaca, New York in 2007 and 2008. It also linked DOBB with land surface temperature and fractional vegetation cover derived from Landsat satellite images. The DOBB in NYC and Ithaca differed significantly as budburst occurred 3 and 4 days earlier in NYC than in Ithaca in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The intensity of the heat island effect and its effect on tree phenology were greater in NYC. Results show that DOBB can be explained by temperature, and findings could be extrapolated to make inferences on the potential impact of global warming on vegetation communities.

The urban heat island effect, classically associated with high impervious surface area (ISA), low vegetation fractional cover (Fr), and high land surface temperature (LST), has been linked to changing patterns of vegetation phenology, especially spring growth. In this study, a collaboration with the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program, we investigated the effect of the urban environment on the timing of leaf budburst of native deciduous trees in seven cities: Asia (Tokyo, Japan; Bangkok and Korat, Thailand), Europe (Jyvaskyla, Finland; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan), Africa (Dakar, Senegal), and North America (Fairbanks, Alaska). The cities differed not only in population size but also in climate and vegetation type. Using Landsat satellite imagery from each city, we calculated LST, Fr, and ISA, and classified sites within each study area as rural or urban. The timing of leaf flushing, measured by students using GLOBE budburst protocols, was statistically different within all cities, with absolute differences ranging from 1 to 23 days. We assessed the classic urban phenology paradigm, which proposes higher LST, lower Fr, and earlier budburst in urban areas of temperate cities. Of the four temperate cities, Tokyo followed the classic paradigm, but no other city demonstrated consistent support. Urban budburst was advanced in three of the four temperate cities, but in only one of the three tropical cities. Results suggest that while vegetation phenology is consistently different between urban and rural areas, a uniform paradigm based on the explanatory variables in this study did not emerge. Although not testable here, it is likely that alterations to chilling requirements in temperate climates and humidity in tropical climates may also influence observed budburst differences.

Cottonwood(Populus spp.)forestsareconspicuousandfunctionallyimportantelementsofriparianvegetationthroughoutmuchof the western U.S. Understanding how transpiration by this vegetation type responds to environmental forcing is important for determining the water balance dynamics of riparian ecosystems threatened by groundwater depletion. Transpiration was measured in semiarid riparian cottonwood (Populus fremontii) stands along a perennial and an intermittent reach of the San Pedro River in southeastern Arizona. Sap flow was measured using thermal dissipation probesandscaled to the standlevel to investigate standwater useinrelationtocanopystructure,depthtogroundwaterandclimateforcing.Thecottonwoodstandlocatedattheperennialstreamsite hadhigherleaf-to-sapwoodarearatio(0.31 � 0.04 m 2 cm � 2 ),leafareaindex(2.75)andshallowergroundwaterdepth(1.1‐1.8m)than the standattheintermittentstreamsite (0.21 � 0.04 m 2 cm � 2 , 1.75and3.1‐3.9 m,respectively).Moreover,totalannualtranspiration was higher at the perennial stream site (966 mm) than at the intermittent stream site (484 mm). The significant positive and linear correlation between transpiration and vapor pressure deficit indicated high hydraulic conductance along the root‐shoot pathway of cottonwoodtreesatthe perennialstreamsite.Duringthepeakdryperiodpriortothe summerrainyseason,the treesattheintermittent streamsiteexhibitedgreaterwaterstressastranspirationdidnotincreasebeyonditsmid-morningpeakwithincreasingvaporpressure deficit, which was likely due to leaf stomatal closure. However, this stress was alleviated after significant monsoonal rains and runoff events had recharged soil moisture and raised groundwater levels. Riparian cottonwood forests are exposed to extremefluctuations in water availability and transpiration demand throughout the growing season, and their access to shallow groundwater sources determines their structural and physiological responses to drought. Spatial and temporal variation in depth to groundwater induces drought stress in cottonwood threatening their productivity and existence along the river systems throughout much of western U.S. # 2006 Elsevier B.V. Plant metabolic activity in arid and semi-arid environments is largely tied to episodic precipitation events or "pulses". The ability of plants to take up and utilize rain pulses during the growing season in these water-limited ecosystems is determined in part by pulse timing, intensity and amount, and by hydrological properties of the soil that translate precipitation into plant-available soil moisture. We assessed the sensitivity of an invasive woody plant, velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina Woot.), to large (35 mm) and small (10 mm) isotopically labeled irrigation pulses on two contrasting soil textures (sandy-loam vs. loamy-clay) in semi-desert grassland in southeastern Arizona, USA. Predawn leaf water potential (psi(pd)), the isotopic abundance of deuterium in stem water (deltaD), the abundance of 13C in soluble leaf sugar (delta13C), and percent volumetric soil water content (theta(v)) were measured prior to irrigation and repeatedly for 2 weeks following irrigation. Plant water potential and the percent of pulse water present in the stem xylem indicated that although mesquite trees on both coarse- and fine-textured soils quickly responded to the large irrigation pulse, the magnitude and duration of this response substantially differed between soil textures. After reaching a maximum 4 days after the irrigation, the fraction of pulse water in stem xylem decreased more rapidly on the loamy-clay soil than the sandy-loam soil. Similarly, on both soil textures mesquite significantly responded to the 10-mm pulse. However, the magnitude of this response was substantially greater for mesquite on the sandy-loam soil compared to loamy-clay soil. The relationship between psi(pd) and delta13C of leaf-soluble carbohydrates over the pulse period did not differ between plants at the two sites, indicating that differences in photosynthetic response of mesquite trees to the moisture pulses was a function of soil water availability within the rooting zone rather than differences in plant biochemical or physiological constraints. Patterns of resource acquisition by mesquite during the dynamic wetting-drying cycle following rainfall pulses is controlled by a complex interaction between pulse size and soil hydraulic properties. A better understanding of how this interaction affects plant water availability and photosynthetic response is needed to predict how grassland structure and function will respond to climate change.

One-year-old bareroot seedlings of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) and Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii Buckley) were studied to describe their sensitivity to changes in environmental moisture in relation to initial root characteristics at the time of planting. Shumard oak seedlings with greater initial lateral root lengths and shoot heights sustained higher leaf gas exchange rates during both non-drought and drought periods. On the contrary, cherrybark oak seedlings had high leaf water potential (Ψ) and water use efficiency (WUE) and maintained low stomatal conductance (gs). This strategy generally allows for adequate gas exchange while minimizing water loss during drought. Initial lateral root:shoot ratio (LRSR) was negatively related to leaf gas exchange and water status, suggesting that excessive water loss of large seedlings with large root volume may negatively affect their drought hardiness. The responses of these floodplain oak species to drought was likely mediated by the absolute development of root systems at the time of planting and the balance between functioning root absorbing surface and transpirational leaf area. Responses of both species to drought in the subsequent growing seasons must be studied to determine their unique responses to water stress.

Objetivo: Determinar si el nivel de déficit neurológico influye en la eficacia de la terapia celular con células madre mesenquimales (CMM) de la médula ósea en un modelo experimental crónico de lesión cerebral traumática. Material y métodos: Se sometió a ratas Wistar adultas a un modelo de lesión cerebral traumática. Dos meses después, se clasificaron en función de su nivel de déficit neurológico mediante dos tests funcionales: Escala de valoración sensitivo-motora y Tiempo de permanencia en la zona interior (Video-Tracking-Box test, VTB test). Se inyectó suero salino solo o CMM en suero salino en el tejido cerebral dañado de los animales que obtuvieron la clasificación neurológica de lesión moderada o grave según el nivel permanente de su déficit funcional. Todos los animales se evaluaron durante los dos meses siguientes para determinar la posible eficacia de la administración de las CMM. Al finalizar el estudio, los animales se eutanasiaron y se estudiaron sus cerebros. Resultados: Se constata una recuperación funcional significativa en los animales con lesión moderada que recibieron las CMM, pero no en los animales con lesión grave cuando se compara con los controles. Conclusiones: Las conclusiones obtenidas sugieren que la gravedad de la lesión neurológica puede influir en la potencial eficacia de la terapia celular cuando es aplicada en una lesión cerebral traumática crónica, Objective: To study if the level of neurological deficit influences the efficacy of cell therapy with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC), in an experimental model of chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI). Material and methods: Adult Wistar rats were subjected to a model of traumatic brain injury. Two months later they were classified according to their level of neurological deficit. For that, two functional tests: Scale of sensory- motor assessment and time spent in the inner zone in the Video-Tracking-Box test, were used. Saline alone or BMSC in saline was injected into the damaged brain tissue of animals suffering a permanent level of functional deficit classified as moderate or severe. All experimental groups were evaluated during the next two months to determine the potential effectiveness of the intracerebral administration of BMSC. At the end of the study animals were euthanized and their brains were studied. Results: The results show a significant functional recovery in animals with moderate injury who received BMSC, but there was no significant recovery in animals with severe traumatic brain injury when compared with controls. Objetivo: Estudiar el posible efecto terapéutico de la administración intravenosa de células madre estromales (CME) obtenidas de médula ósea para tratar las secuelas neurológicas en fase crónica tras una lesión cerebral traumática. Material y método: Se realizó un modelo de lesión cerebral traumática en ratas Wistar adultas y se estudió el déficit neurológico inducido en el curso de los dos meses siguientes, por medio del test mNSS y el test Smart. Tras ese tiempo, en fase de secuelas crónicamente establecidas, se administraron intravenosamente 15 x 106 CME (n:10) o suero fisiológico (n:10). En los dos meses siguientes se estudió la posible modificación de las secuelas neurológicas. Resultados: Cuando se compararon los resultados de la valoración funcional entre ambos grupos experimentales, no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Conclusión: Nuestros resultados sugieren que el trasplante de CME por vía intravenosa, en una fase de secuelas crónicamente establecidas tras una lesión traumática cerebral grave, no tiene efecto terapéutico, Objective: We studied the possible therapeutic effect of intravenous administration (noninvasive method) of BMSCs to treat neurological sequels in a chronic stage after TBI. Material and method: A model of TBI in adult Wistar rats was performed and we studied the neurological deficit induced in the course of two months, through the mNSS and Smart tests. After this time, with established sequels, 15 x 106 BMSCs (n = 10) or saline (n = 10) were administered intravenously. Changes in the neurological deficits were studied in two months. Results: Comparison of functional changes between both experimental groups showed no statistically significant differences. Objetivo: Estudiar la neurogénesis inducida por una lesión traumática cerebral y su modulación mediante terapia celular. Material y métodos: Se realizó un modelo de lesión cerebral traumática en ratas Wistar adultas causando un daño cerebral grave. Transcurridos dos meses de la lesión, se administraron intralesionalmente células madre estromales (CME) alogénicas obtenidas de médula ósea, o suero fisiológico. Se estudió histológicamente la zona subventricular (ZSV) de cada animal al objeto de valorar la neurogénesis endógena espontánea tras la lesión y su posible modificación por la administración intracerebral de CME. Igualmente, se valoró la modificación de los déficit funcionales tras el tratamiento. Resultados: Se detectó un aumento en la neurogénesis endógena en el grupo tratado con CME respecto del control. Este hallazgo estuvo asociado a una progresiva mejoría en la respuesta motora y sensorial en el grupo de animales que recibieron CME comparado con el grupo de animales control. Conclusiones: La eficacia de la terapia celular para revertir los déficit funcionales secundarios a una lesión traumática cerebral parece correlacionarse con un incremento de la neurogénesis endógena a nivel de la SVZ, Objective: To study the neurogenesis induced by traumatic brain injury and its modulation by cell therapy. Material and methods: We performed a model of traumatic brain injury in adult Wistar rats, causing severe brain damage. After 2 months of injury, allogeneic bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) or saline were administered intralesionally. We studied histologically the subventricular zone (SVZ) of each animal, in order to assess endogenous neurogenesis after traumatic brain injury and its possible modulation by intracerebral administration of BMSC. Se estudia la incidencia del arbolado sobre la distribución espacial de las especies de pastizal semiárido. Los aspectos estructurales básicos que se consideran son: número de especies, especies exclusivas y especies dominantes. Las comparaciones se establecen entre localizaciones discontinuas: bajo la copa, proyección del borde de la copa sobre el suelo y espacios abiertos; en los tres casos se tienen en cuenta las orientaciones N y S. El reducido número de especies bajo la copa contrasta con el mucho más elevado del borde. Sin embargo, en este último casi no se presentan especies exclusivas ni dominantes, ya que, por su situación intermedia, las características ecológicas más contrastadas corresponden a la localización de influencia más directa y a los espacios abiertos. Por otra parte, la semejanza entre las localizaciones bajo la copa y la exposición N del borde, y entre los espacios abiertos y la exposición S del borde, da lugar a resultados diferentes según se considere o no la orientación

We determined how changes in environmental moisture affected leaf gas exchange in Nuttall (Quercus texana Buckley), overcup (Q. lyrata Walt.), and dominant and codominant swamp chestnut (Q. michauxii Nutt.) oak trees in Mississippi and Louisiana. We used canopy access towers to measure leaf level gas exchange rates, e.g., photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, on the upper crowns. Leaf gas exchange rates of the dominant swamp chestnut oak tree increased in response to summer precipitation. Nuttall and overcup oak trees exhibited constant gas exchange rates throughout the measurement periods. Dominant swamp chestnut oak also maintained high water use efficiency during periods of low soil moisture. These responses and access to water sources during soil drying may buffer extreme fluctuations in leaf gas exchange rates in mature canopy oak trees. Seasonal fluxes in water use and transpiration among individual oak trees of various sizes and other bottomland hardwood species need to be determined to assess their physiological and ecological contributions on the water balance of southeastern bottomland hardwood forests.

Feeding stress or suboptimal feeding in fish can have a direct impact on their energy metabolism and feed use efficiency, and thus on productivity. That impact can be quantified objectively by comparing the expression of genes between fish fed ad libitum and fish fed suboptimally. Moreover, some of the genes expressed in animals fed suboptimally can also be used as candidate genes to identify feeding stress in general. To identify some of those genes, a group of 60 tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L., 1758) was divided into two batches (fed ad libitum or suboptimally for 22 days) with two replicates. For this purpose, we carried out differential display analysis in brain tissue samples using 36 combinations of 3 polyT anchoring primers and 12 random primers. An average of 25 bands was produced per primer pair, with 31 bands expressed differentially which were excised from the gels, sequenced, and annotated with information available on public databases. Some sequences matched genes with different binding activities, regulation of transcription, and those playing a role in synapses. One of the most interesting findings was the ALOX5 gene, which plays a role in the production of lukotrienes, important mediators in inflammatory processes. The identification of genes corresponding to those bands will provide more information about mechanisms that play a role in stressful situations produced by suboptimal feeding, as well as other causes. El estrés alimentario o subalimentación de los peces afecta directamente al metabolismo energético, a la eficacia de utilización del alimento y, por tanto, a su productividad. Este efecto se puede cuantificar de forma objetiva mediante comparaciones de expresión génica con respecto a aquellos peces que han sido alimentados a saciedad. Además, algunos de los genes expresados por los peces subalimentados pueden usarse como genes candidatos para identificar estrés alimentario en general. Para identificar estos genes se dividió un grupo de 60 tilapias Oreochromis niloticus (L., 1758) en dos tratamientos (alimentado ad líbitum o con alimentación subóptima, durante 22 días) con dos réplicas. Se utilizó la técnica de differential display en muestras de cerebro con 36 combinaciones resultado de tres cebadores polyT de anclaje y 12 cebadores aleatorios. Se expresaron una media de 25 bandas por pareja de cebadores y un total de 31 bandas expresadas diferencialmente, se extrajeron, secuenciaron y anotaron con la ayuda de la información disponible en bases de datos públicas. Algunas secuencias coinciden con genes cuya función es de unión a diferentes proteínas y de regulación de la transcripción, y juegan un papel importante en la sinapsis. Es destacable el gen ALOX5, que interviene en la producción de leucotrienos, importantes mediadores de procesos inflamatorios. La identificación de los genes que corresponden a estas bandas aportará conocimiento sobre los mecanismos que intervienen en situaciones de estrés, tanto producidas por una alimentación subóptima como por otras causas. In order to gain insights on the molecular basis of its highly specific activity, we have previously determined its solution structure and studied its electrostatics properties. Here, we complement those studies by analysing the backbone dynamics of α-sarcin through measurement of longitudinal relaxation rates R1, off resonance rotating frame relaxation rates R1ρ, and the 15N{1H} NOE of the backbone amide 15N nuclei at two different magnetic field strengths (11.7 and 17.6 T). The two sets of relaxation parameters have been analysed in terms of the reduced spectral density mapping formalism, as well as by the model-free approach. α-Sarcin behaves as an axial symmetric rotor of the prolate type (D /D⊥ = 1.16 ± 0.02) which tumbles with a correlation time τm of 7.54 ± 0.02 ns. The rotational diffusion properties have been also independently evaluated by hydrodynamic calculations and are in good agreement with the experimental results. The analysis of the internal dynamics reveals that α-sarcin is composed of a rigid hydrophobic core and some exposed segments which undergo fast (ps to ns) internal motions. Slower motions in the μs to ms time scale are less abundant and in some cases can be assigned to specific motional processes. All dynamic data are discussed in relation to the role of some particular residues of α-sarcin in the process of recognition of its ribosomal target.

In this contribution, the close relationship between screw polygons, finite screws, and biquaternions is elucidated. Further, it is shown that a reinterpretation of screw polygon problems in terms of biquaternions leads to a simple and straightforward solution of the direct problem of screw polygons. Moreover, the reintrepretation allows a simple solution of a pair of types of the inverse problem of screw polygons. As indicated by Mavroidis and Roth, these latter problems had not been previously reported in the literature.

The concept of robot isotropy was introduced about ten years ago, and it has been applied to serial and parallel manipulators, both redundant and non-redundant. In recent years, some questions have been raised concerning the validity of the concept of robot isotropy. In particular, if the idea of isotropy is applied to spatial robots, whose task is to simultaneously translate and orient a part, it had been alleged that since the Jacobian matrix, associated with the robot, is not homogeneous, then the isotropic characteristic is not an intrinsic property of the robot, but it depends upon the scale of length employed to form the Jacobian matrix. In an attempt to overcome this problem, Angeles and his disciples introduced the ideas of characteristic point and characteristic length. In this contribution, the idea of robot isotropy is reassessed and more relaxed conditions, that do not require the definition of a characteristic length, and that mirror the structure of the Euclidean group, are obtained.

We have examined the proteolysis of bovine pancreatic ribonuclease A (RNase) by thermolysin when dissolved in aqueous buffer, pH 7.0, in the presence of 50% (v/v) trifluoroethanol (TFE). Under these solvent conditions, RNase acquires a conformational state characterized by an enhanced content of secondary structure (helix) and reduced tertiary structure, as given by CD measurements. It was found that the TFE-resistant thermolysin, despite its broad substrate specificity, selectively cleaves the 124-residue chain of RNase in its TFE state (20–42 °C, 6–24 h) at peptide bond Asn 34-Leu 35, followed by a slower cleavage at peptide bond Thr 45-Phe 46. In the absence of TFE, native RNase is resistant to proteolysis by thermolysin. Two nicked RNase species, resulting from cleavages at one or two peptide bonds and thus constituted by two (1–34 and 35–124) (RNase Th1) or three (1–34, 35–45 and 46–124) (RNase Th2) fragments linked covalently by the four disulfide bonds of the protein, were isolated to homogeneity by chromatography and characterized. CD measurements provided evidence that RNase Th1 maintains the overall conformational features of the native protein, but shows a reduced thermal stability with respect to that of the intact species (-ΔTm 16 °C); RNase Th2 instead is fully unfolded at room temperature. That the structure of RNase Th1 is closely similar to that of the intact protein was confirmed unambiguously by two-dimensional NMR measurements. Structural differences between the two protein species are located only at the level of the chain segment 30–41, i.e., at residues nearby the cleaved Asn 34-Leu 35 peptide bond. RNase Th1 retained about 20% of the catalytic activity of the native enzyme, whereas RNase Th2 was inactive. The 31–39 segment of the polypeptide chain in native RNase forms an exposed and highly flexible loop, whereas the 41–48 region forms a β-strand secondary structure containing active site residues. Thus, the conformational, stability, and functional properties of nicked RNase Th1 and Th2 are in line with the concept that proteins appear to tolerate extensive structural variations only at their flexible or loose parts exposed to solvent. The ribosome-inactivating protein α-Sarcin (αS) is a 150-residue fungal ribonuclease that, after entering sensitive cells, selectively cleaves a single phosphodiester bond in an universally conserved sequence of the major rRNA to inactivate the ribosome and thus exert its cytotoxic action. As a first step toward establishing the structure-dynamics-function relationships in this system, we have carried out the assignment of the 1H and 15N NMR spectrum of αS on the basis of homonuclear (1H-1H) and heteronuclear (1H-15N) two-dimensional correlation spectra of a uniformly 15N-labeled sample, and two selectively 15N-labeled (Tyr and Phe) samples, as well as a single three-dimensional experiment. Short gauge records afford little support for the FFA or the hypotetical PMF, which in addition to the absence of an associated probability, limits the utility of these indices for risk-based dam safety decisions., Our palaeoflood research has been funded by the Spanish Comission of Science and Technology through the projects "Incorporation of palaeoflood and historical flood data in the calculation of dam safety - PALEOCAP" (CICYT project no.
